Truth or Dare: Tell the One-Who-Got-Away that you're still madly in love with him OR spend the night trapped with him in a hunting lodge that's about to be swept downstream?
Ha! Trick Question. I get to do BOTH! Because when it rains, it pours.
First, I call Theo McGuire to tell him that I've always loved him and I always will--at least for the next few hours until Pippa Jane the Pig and I are swallowed by the floodwaters. Then, I open the second story window when Theo comes knocking in his kayak, in a likely doomed attempt to save us.
Soon, we're trapped in the cabin where we had our first time fifteen years ago and all I can think about is how much I wish I could turn back the clock. If I could, I'd never let this fiercely kind and sexy-as-hell man go.
Since this could be The End, we agree to make our last night a night to remember.
But what happens when morning dawns, we're both still breathing, and I can't bear to think of a life without my favorite McGuire?
Author of over forty novels, USA Today Bestseller Lili Valente writes everything from steamy suspense to laugh-out-loud romantic comedies. She can't resist a story where love wins big. Because love should always win. She lives in Vermont with her two big-hearted boy children and a dog named Pippa Jane.

When It Pours is a brand-new novella in Lili Valente's McGuire Brothers series, and this time around, it's a McGuire cousin who gets his shot at going after his happily-ever-after--one that's eluded him for a decade and a half. Yup, I'm talking about Theodore McGuire, aka Theo, who had a crush on Starling Baxter, who in turn had a crush on Theo's cousin, Christian (Boss Me Around, book three in The McGuire Brothers). His is a second-chance romance shared with his first love, Macy Mallard, and a miniature pig named Pippa Jane.
It's been fifteen years since Macy Mallard drove away from her hometown of Bad Dog, Minnesota at eighteen. The place hasn't been home in a long time, but it's a town that holds some good memories, most of which she shared with Theo McGuire. So naturally, now that she's trapped in her uncle's cabin that's rapidly taking in water due to a nasty storm and overflowing river and fearing she and her pet pig, Pippa Jane, are perilously close to being swept away, she decides to give him a call and profess her unfailing love for him. Of course, Theo comes to her rescue...until he ends up needing rescuing himself! What fate awaits these erstwhile lovers and the perfectly precocious pet pig that is Pippa?
Usually, I require a fair amount of groveling when it comes to a second-chance romance that has one main character leaving behind the other main character, but Macy and Theo's story didn't really need to come to that, what with being stuck in a flooded cabin with no help in sight feeling like a confessional of sorts. I'm a sucker for open and honest communication, and we get that in spades with these two. I loved Macy's independent spirit and her adoration of Pippa. And Theo? His understanding of Macy's needs made him even more swoon-worthy. Bonus points go to Pippa, and five stars for When It Pours!
How fitting that a book written for flood relief (remember that bad one in the NE US?) is set amidst…a flood. We're back in Bad Dog, MN, where everyone is a McGuire or related to one, and sweet Theo finally finds his forever. It's with the first girl he ever loved, and then she left Bad Dog fifteen years ago planning never to return.
But Macy Mallard is indeed back in Bad Dog, hiding out at her uncle's hunting cabin along with her pet pig, Pippa Jane. Before she can even think about making plans for the next phase of her life, the raging stom outside floods the river, which in turn floods the first floor of the cabin. Frantic over repeated busy signals when dialing 911 and thinking she may be swept downriver at any moment, Macy reaches out and leaves a voice mail for the one she left behind, Theo McGuire.
Before long, Theo is motoring up to the cabin in his boat but ends up getting stuck in the cabin with Macy, rather than rescuing her and Pippa Jane. Suddenly it's as if fifteen years never happened, and now he has the girl of his dreams, the only one who's ever held his heart, in his arms again.
These McGuire boys are swoony, Bad Dog is a small town I’d love to visit, and Lili's personified pets in these stories are everything. As much as I love the quick glimpse into Theo and Macy's romance in this novella, I think we get a bigger look into the devastation suffered by Lili and other at the hands of the raging flood.
The proceeds of this one will help Lili restore her home and clean up the parts of her life that have been destroyed by the flood, so for that reason alone, I hope you'll hit the 1-Click. In addition to your benevolence, this is a story that will make your romantic heart smile, and I have no doubt you'll love it!
Having read Ms.Valente's work many times before i always look so forward to her books! As soon as i found out about this novella i wanted to read it. I was so glad to head back to Bad Dog with the McGuires! I picked this up and immediately got right into it. I enjoyed this novella so much!
Macy and Theo's journey pulled me right in! Once upon a time these two were each other's everything, but life led them in different directions. Now Macy is back in Bad Dog with her pig Pippa Jane when a storm comes in and leads to the cabin flooding. All she can think is to reach out to Theo. Can they face it all together? And will they admit what their hearts haven't forgotten?
I really liked how quickly that i got into Macy and Theo's story and how these two characters tackled real stuff from the flooding to their feelings. The connection and chemistry between these two was so good! Both Macy and Theo had me feeling so much! I admired and related to Macy, especially when it came to things in her life and heart. I adored how caring Theo was when it came to Macy. I didn't know how certain things would go for them which got me even more into their story!
I was so glad to be back in Bad Dog! Also, Pippa Jane has my heart!
With When It Pours, Ms.Valente has created such a good read that brought the real and the feels! I can always count on this author's words to make me smile and to get me in the heart! I can't wait to read what she brings our way next!
*I volunteered to read and review a copy of this book from the author*
I’m not sure if it’s because this was a novella or just this particular book but I truly did NOT like it. I’ve read the other 3 Bad Dog books and enjoyed them enough to think this might be a good read. I will say part of it is I am not a big fan of second chance so that definitely plays a part in my review.
Also this is not a true HEA. This is basically a HFN.
I did not find either of these characters very likable. The writing between them was too perfect and too instalove. I’ve read novellas that didn’t feel that way before so I don’t think that’s the issue here. Macy’s dialogue was just awkward and too long winded at times.
I particularly did not care for Theo’s “secret”. Honestly wanted to dnf right then but since I paid for this book and unfortunately couldn’t get a refund I wasn’t wasting my money even more by not even finishing it. I thought maybe things would get better and the rest would redeem him. However that was not the case for me. I didn’t like Macy’s reasons for leaving and still wanting to stay gone. I honestly felt like she was selfish for coming back. Theo deserved better than her. Especially with what she reveals at the end when he clearly wanted a family. The end was honestly disappointing and not a real HEA. I will definitely be reading reviews on the next book in the series before reading it after this.

~*~ Audiobook Review ~*~ When it Pours is book 3.5 in the McQuire Brothers series. This novella give us Theo's story. As noted by another reviewer, Jen, "Theo, who had a crush on Starling Baxter, who in turn had a crush on Theo's cousin, Christian (Boss Me Around, book three in The McGuire Brothers). His is a second-chance romance shared with his first love, Macy Mallard, and a miniature pig named Pippa Jane." You don't have to read the series to enjoy this book, though.
This second-chance romance takes place 15 years after Macy left the little town to Bad Dog to save herself. Now she and Pippa are stranded in a flooded house and she makes the call to Theo to make sure he knows how she feels. He comes to the rescue, and I love it! Pippa is a wonderful character as well. How perfect that this book starts with a disastrous flood and benefits that very thing, which was experienced by the author - along with a whole host of other disasters recently. I really enjoyed this novella.
Robert Hatchet has a wonderful voice and really brings Theo to life. Lili is just perfect because she lives and breathes her characters. This is a short one, but well worth it!
“Being with you makes me happy. Even in the middle of the storm.”
I really enjoyed Macy and Theo’s second chance, first love, forced proximity, coming home novella with a side of natural disaster. Macy and Theo were HS sweethearts but separated after graduation 15 years ago when Macy could not stay in their small town and Theo could not leave. Macy, feeling unmoored in her social media influencer nomadic life, has returned to Bad Dog with her pet mini pig hoping for reconciliation or closure or something. Shortly after arriving in town, there’s a terrible rain storm and flooding. Trying to restart your HEA in the middle of a natural disaster and courting potential death may seem like an odd choice but life works like that sometimes - chaotic and messy, painful and wonderful all at the same time. Despite being short, the story was well written and included witty dialogue, three dimensional characters, and an engaging storyline as shown through sweet moments, steamy scenes, laugh out loud moments, messy families, painful pasts, big feels, and love.
“Some things, some people, you never get over. Those people are worth turning you life upside down for.”
When It Pours was cute, sweetly emotional, second chance novella set in the Bad Dog world. Theo McGuire and Macy were high school sweethearts, but they both needed different things from life so Macy left town and ghosted Theo. It’s been years, but both still have feelings for the other and when their lives are threatened, feelings can no longer be ignored. However, when real life intrudes, will they be able to make a relationship work?
“I’ve loved you every single day you were gone.”
Theo and Macy were adorable. I loved how open and honest they were with each other and how they fought to find to be together and make things work. Their banter and chemistry was easy and fun and full of emotions. Pippa made me laugh out loud more than once and was so weirdly delightful. When It Pours was full of heart and humor and was a fun, easy read that will have you rooting for Theo and Macy to find their HEA.
When It Pours returns us, once again, back to Bad Dog with the story of Theo and Macy. This is a fast-paced novela telling the sweet and heartfelt tale of a true and deep love that will always survive.
Macy returns to Bad Dog after 15 years of traveling on her own and ends up trapped in a cabin threatened by rising flood waters. When Theo unexpectedly shows up to rescue Macy and her pet pig, they are left stranded together not knowing whether they will survive. They hang on tight to each other throughout the night surrounded by the love they’ve always shared. But when the dawn breaks, will Macy and Theo’s deep connection and unwavering love remain strong enough to find a way to build a new life together? A life they have both always wanted to spend and share together in each other’s arms.
Lili Valente always has a way of creating vivid stories and memorable characters. And When It Pours is another perfect example. Ms. Valente has been on my must read list for years, and with the additions to her many series over the years, she continues to stay at the top.
When it Pours is a novella in The McGuire Brothers series by Lili Valente. Each book can be read as standalone but I highly recommend reading the series since it’s so much fun and sexy!
Macy hasn’t been to Bad Dog, MN in fifteen years. She grew up in the small town but it never felt like home to her. The open road has been her home since she left Bad Dog at eighteen. She walked away from her one and only that day and now she needed him more than ever.
Theo never expected to hear Macy’s voice again. In the last fifteen years, he thought about her. What state was she in? She is happy? Will he see her again? Well, he finally got the sign he needed and he was not letting her go again without a fight. But first, they need to survive the flood…
One night. One flood. One cute mini-pig with an attitude. I love that Theo got his own story!! He is such a sweet guy and so swoon-worthy! Then there is Macy. She is a total badass and such a good mama to little piggy, Pippa Jane.
A great novella to bring me back to the “Bad Dog” world and I loved Macy and Theo’s story.
Macy is back in Minnesota after traveling in a VW camper van while exploring and living on the road. With her trusting sidekick, Pippa Jane the Pig, the two are waiting out the rain storm that is hitting hard. Theo was her first of everything and she left all those years ago without saying goodbye. But when she calls Theo during the storm, he comes to her rescue and the two of them work things out after all these years.
This was a fun, sweet and steamy novella that is a great addition to the Bad Dog series. I loved how Macy wasn’t afraid to live her life out on the road. She might have left without a goodbye but I get why she did. Theo was a knight in shining armor with his noble canoe steed and he came to help her without hesitation. The two had a connection that I felt immediately as I read. The story is short but doesn’t skip on emotion and witty banter that had me cracking up.
4.5 Stars This is a novella in the Bad Dog/ McGuire Brothers world. It's a quick read, but one that packs a punch. Now if you have been following the tragic flooding aftermath Lili has been dealing you know this book hits close to home for her. I could feel the devastation Macy and the mini pig Pippa Jane were experiencing when mother nature brings terrible rains to Bad Dog. Events create moments that makes us all think and reassess ourselves, that's what happens for Macy. Get one last message out to Theo the one she let slip through her fingers 15 years ago. A chain reaction happens when Theo decides to go rescue Macy, but mother nature has other plans for these two. Go one this wild ride for Macy, Theo, and Pippa Jane. Pippa Jane had me chuckling through out this one. Lili delivered on her great sense of humor in this one that I've come to really enjoy. Trust me this book is going to go by so fast it makes you wish it was longer. A very enjoyable read!
First off, this book will help the author recover from her own flood trauma, so that's an excellent reason to pick up this story.
Secondly, if you've enjoyed the Bad Dog series/McGuire brothers - you will enjoy their cousin, Theo's and Macy's, his long lost love story. Macy finds herself stranded in her uncle's cabin with her pet pig who is just a complete delight while floodwaters are rising. Let's just say luckily this cabin has three floors.
...and if you haven't read this series yet - dive in here. It will give you a good feel for this family and town!
She leaves a message for Theo thinking this might be the last message that she can send and he comes paddling to her rescue.
Lots of floodwater drama ensues, but these two lost loves are just so sweet together. I am a sucker for second chance stories and I really enjoyed this novella.
"I'd rather weather a storm with you than share a sunny day with anyone else." Awwwwww!!!
Great characters and a sweet second chance romance. Loved this addition to the series.
What happens when you never forget the one that got away? Or you left? For good reasons but still… And you’re back. And you may not survive what Mother Nature is packing. What do you do? You reach out to the only one that matters…
I loved this quick, sweet, sultry novella set in the Bad Dogs world. Macy and Theo just made sense. They were ying and yang. Salt and pepper. And with Pippa to join the crowd – a sweeter pig I’ve yet to meet – this was a trifecta that totally worked. Theo’s devotion to his long lost love never wavered and Macy knew she had to make amends. And maybe, just maybe, dream that it could work this time…
Over way too soon it was a full story in a compact package – a great addition to the Bad Dog world.
Macy and Theo have a past. They were in love when they were younger. But Macy didn't want to stay in Bad Dog and Theo couldn't leave, so they went their separate ways. Each still so in love with the other.
Fast forward years later, Macy is back in Bad Dog with Pippa Jane, her pig. They are staying in her Uncle's cabin and the rain starts and continues, to the point that the first floor is flooded, amongst other issues and Macy is panicked along with Pippa. She can't reach out to her parents for a rescue so she takes a chance and Calls Theo.
Theo gets a message from Macy and she needs help. Of course, because he's still in love with her, he goes to her.
This was such a sweet story!! Macy and Theo were perfect together and I'm so happy they found a solution to be together. Absolutely loved Pippa Jane!
Another great story by Lili Valente. When it Pours is another story straight out of Bad Dog. This is Macy and Theo's story and I loved it from the beginning to end. I am a sucker for second chance romance if it warrants. You get the lows and highs from this story. Pippa was an added plus to the duo. I smiled from ear to ear when Pippa was near.
When it Pours shows how to overcome from trials and damages from the past. How to look straight forward and never looking back. About forgiveness with not just others, but within yourself. Macy was my hero of this story. I lived through her and loved the HEA. We needed this story!
I love this story of Theo and Macy! They dated when they were young and they were madly in love. But Macy had to escape her parents and Theo couldn't leave because his grandmother needed him. Macy leaves town and blocks Theo's number. Now Macy's back in Bad Dog on a break and encounters a flood. Fearing for her life and her pet pig Pippa Jean, She leaves a message for Theo that she always has and still loves him, thinking he won't get it for a couple days. Fortunately, Theo gets the message and comes and saves her and Pippa Jean and to tell her that he always has and still loves her too. I love these two together! I love this book and series! I highly recommend! I can't wait to continue on with the series.
Theo is a cousin to the McGuire Brothers and has been in love with Macy since High School. Macy left Bad Dog right after High School and has been gone 15 years. She loved Theo then but she wanted adventures so instead of telling Theo goodbye she skips out of town and then blocks his number. Now she’s back with her pet mini pig Pippa Jean and stuck in a cabin in a flood. She calls Theo and leaves him a message where she is at and that she still loves him and apologizes for running off. Theo gets the message and boats out to save her. This is a very good, fast reading novella. I really liked Theo, he’s supportive, kind and honest. Macy is adventurous, a travel blogger and caring. I would definitely read more books by this author and this series.
**My thanks to the author for providing me with a free copy for an honest review**
This is a very quick novella that focuses on two people who have a history together and have never forgotten each other even if many years have gone past them when they next meet up.
Theo is positive that this time he is not going to let this opportunity miss him as the woman he cannot forget is back in town and needs his help. This time he is ready to do anything to stay in Macy life, even if it means going on the road with her this time with the support of his family.
Macy does not have family support and has been a little lonely even if she has her pet pig. Theo is the one who got away, however she too never got over him, but when he says he is coming with her she balks about taking him from his family. However with their support along with Thoe's she knows that this is for ever and a chance at happiness with the one she loves.
Entire series in audio. Good author and narrator! I recently reviewed something with a comment that it would have been better with more attention to the animals. Well, this series delivers that, plus. It's full of offbeat pets, support animals, and crazy wildlife antics.
Bad Dog, the name of the small town, is a clue to the craziness that ensues. There are so many cousins and in-laws in this community that people say they can't date without knowing who someone is connected to.
A fun Rom Com series I found in Hoopla. I'll be looking for more by this author. Same review added to each book in the series.
I always love visiting Bad Dog and this was no exception! And I mean Pippa? Who wouldn't love a pig as sweet as her? Macy and Theo were the best, their love timeless and I enjoyed every unpredictable moment of their story. Its a perfect novella with sweetness, spice and instalove just trying to make the right choices and realize what they can and can't live without. I very much love them, their connection was electric, jumping right off the page from the very start and I hope we see more of them.
I listened to the audiobook. Very much enjoyed this book! So many things going on. I continue to enjoy the added fun of the animals in all of these girls lives. My brothers and I grew up in a tiny midwestern town and on the farm. We had a variety of dogs, cats, crippled chickens, orphaned raccoons, orphaned rabbits, orphaned squirrels, pigs, etc. These MacGuire and their girls are a fun and challenging bunch! Lili, you do such a fantastic job narrating your great writing. Do pay attention to floor vs ground and you will be totally perfect! Robert Hatchett is also a fantastic narrator.
I enjoyed this quick trip to Bad Dog where Theo McGuire gets his HEA with his first and only love. This second chance novella takes place during a storm that is flooding the Bad Dog area. During Theo's attempt to rescue Macy and her pet pig, Pippa Jayne, from an isolated cabin in the woods, his boat gets swept away and they are stuck together for the night until they can get rescued.
Lili Valente delivers the perfect quick read with heart, heat, and an adorable and smart pig!
It also has an extra emotional punch knowing that Lili is personally going through the aftermath of flooding that damaged her home.
"I'd rather weather a storm with you than share a sunny day with anyone else."
Macy & Theo get a second chance at romance. How they get it is part of the charm of their story. It's like they were never apart in the first place. After some theatrics and rescuing they finally find their footing. Their reunion is filled with frantic spicy, sexiness. This is a super sexy novella that you won't be able to put down. Lili is the queen of small town, second chance romance. #rain #pippajane
This is a novella and I'm fully aware that there can't be as much character building as in novels, but this was especially lacking. These MCs had a whole history YEARS ago of which the reader has only brief references, are suddenly reunited, and within MINUTES (in an emergency situation where we humans are notorious for making very reliable decisions) are agreeing to be together forever. and pretty much after that everything is perfect, the pig is happy and the end.

Ahh this was such a cute novella! I loved the pig, and how this story was based somewhat from real life experiences! The suspense of the pig’s life had me finish this book in minutes!
Theo and Macy are clearly meant to be and I loved how this novella show how they reconnected years after being together way back in high school! I’m so glad we got another book in the Bad Dog universe!
Following the devastating loss of her home in an historic flood, Author Lili Valente, wrote this novella about Macy and Theo finding second chance love during a flood that took Macy's treasured memories. Funny and just enough spice to satisfy me. Add in an adorable pig named Pippa Jane, and I thoroughly enjoyed the story.
when it pours by lili valente. ok, this book had love, mystery, and basically, will they survive the night? lol. and what about the poor pig. both MCS were annoyed at each other and were still pining after each other for so long that. when they could have died of the rain storm that they needed to get their feelings out. it was delicious, and it left me living my fingers for more lol
I liked it! At times it felt a little rushed, I would have loved to see a longer story about these characters. I liked them and the story, especially thinking of the author right now going through a lot with flooding.
