Kanan is the best man at, Davis and, Abby’s wedding when Walker comes looking for him to tell him, Emerson is waiting for him up front. When asking Walker if she’s okay or if she’s hurt, he can hear the panic in his voice. Walker says he asked, but she said physically, yes. He had a doctor check her out, and he cleared her. But, something seemed off, she looked worried and asked for him. That's all it took and Kanan was off like a flash to his car driving back to the compound. He knows he shouldn’t have the feelings he does, for his best friend's daughter, but he does. Although he needs to lock those down before he sees her she can’t know.
When he gets to her she is just waking from a nap. She is more beautiful than the last time he saw her two years ago at her father’s funeral. But, she looks disheveled. And, she’s supposed to be in school, why is she here? He’s so worried he is gruff when asking, “Emerson Bug are you okay? Why are you in, Whiskey Run, and not in, Texas? Her thoughts of getting to, Kanan, and then everything will be, okay. That sounds less true, especially, when he starts with her name, Emerson, and then ends it with “bug” in it.
Once she gets into her plight of what occurred she knows, he is angry. However, not at her. Maybe a little, for traveling, via the bus. When she starts to second guess her decision, on whether she should have gone to him, he gets her moving towards his car. Once, Kanan has a handle on his emotions enough to drive, he takes her to his home. For two years, Kanan had been living with survivor's guilt. And he has felt like, he can't move forward until he can come clean, to her. But, with what she tells him that her mom has done to her to bring her to him is outlandish, but true. This is such a good story of a gap-age couple, whose hearts fell in love when he rescued her, at fifteen and he was twenty-seven. Nothing happened, and it was a platonic type, of love or more admiration. Then, at eighteen under the worst of conditions, a kiss is exchanged, between them. Hearts unite and still are not together, because of her dad’s passing, and his guilt.
