Murder Comes Home

Rate this book
From author Rosalie Spielman comes a quiet hometown suddenly invaded by TV celebrities... and a killer!

Army retiree Tessa Treslow is as excited as the other residents of New Oslo, Idaho, when the cast and crew of the TV show Picks with Ricks comes to town! Tessa and her Aunt Edna put their car restoration business on hold to let the celebrity antique hunters pick through their old garage, hoping the trash contains a treasure that will help fund their new business. But it turns out that the pickers come with TV cameras, likeable stars, a stressed-out producer—and a murderer!

The show’s lead makes an insistent offer on one of Aunt Edna’s renovation projects and won’t take no for an answer. And when Tessa finds the show's cameraman dead in the restored 1965 Mustang, Tessa knows murder has come home yet again. And the mystery takes a very personal turn when the dead man is found with an antique inscribed pocket watch connected to the former owners of Aunt Edna's farmhouse.

Another really good read in Rosalie Spielman's Hometown series set in New Oslo, Idaho. Tessa, an Army vet, is trying to get her and her Aunt Edna's dream of a car restoration business up and running. To help with funds, they agree to let the crew from the show Picks with Rick's go through their old barn looking for old treasures they can sell. What happens next is one of their restorations ready to sell is stolen, when recovered, there is a crew member dead from carbon monoxide poisoning and another one found in the truck, clinging to life. The more Tessa helps Freddie look into things, the more they find unknown connections among the crew and even more shocking to a murder that took place in the homestead over a hundred years before. What is the history, how does it play into today's drama, and who's the killer. It's definitely an intriguing series of mysteries!

Tessa Treslow and her Aunt Edna are strong and ambitious military veterans who now own BOSS, a car restoration business. BOSS is the focus of the Picks for Ricks reality-TV show. Chick and Ricki, hosts of the show, are interested in vintage and antique parts found in the BOSS garage where Tessa and Edna perform their restorations. They find an antique pocket watch in a barn loft which provide clues to the Jennings family who originally lived on the property during the turn of the 20th century. Could there have been a possible murder of one of the Jennings and disappearance of other family members?

The Picks for Ricks cameraman is later found murdered in a 1966 red Mustang that Tessa and Edna finally finished restoring and was ready for sale. The antique pocket watch was found on the cameraman.

Tessa and Edna try to put puzzle pieces together on who would want to kill the cameraman, why put the antique pocket watch was in his possession, and figuring out the history behind the Jennings family.

With lots going on in this book, there wasn't a dull moment! Even so, the multi-story lines were easy to follow and leave you longing to find out what happens next. I like how the author pays tribute to our military veterans and bringing these strong women to the forefront.

I received an ARC from the publisher for purposes of an unbiased review.

Tessa finds trouble again in this well written cozy mystery. I really enjoyed reading this book, turning pages well past when I should do other things. Tessa finds trouble again in her small town of New Oslo, Idaho. This time, TV antique "pickers" come out to see what there is to find at the shop and homestead Tessa and Edna love. Lot's of history is revealed, investigated, and ultimately tied in with a recent murder. The TV crew cameraman is found dead in strange fashion and clues point every which way. Tessa, along with Edna, niece Summer, sheriff deputy Freddie and a few town characters put it all together. Very entertaining read, I look forward to more in this series.
This reads fine as a stand alone if you missed the first books in the series, but I for one plan to go back and read the ones I missed.

I voluntarily read an ARC of this book for an honest review.

Now that was a fun book!!!

This is the third book in the Hometown Mystery series by Ms. Rosalie Spielman, and it certainly is an intriguing mystery with twists and turns plus secrets, intrigue and revelations which kept me engaged and anxious until the end.

Tess, the protagonist is a retired Army veteran who came home to work in her curmudgeonly aunt Edna's car repair and restoration shop. The plot involves the arrival of an antique hunter's TV show called "Picks with Ricks ", plus the murder of an indigenous lady, and Tess can't help but investigate this third murder in the small town of New Oslo, Idaho, despite the objections of her boyfriend who is getting a divorce.

The book is also funny, and I enjoyed several LOL moments. There is even a moose who makes another appearance!

The ending was very tense and well thought out and written.

I very much enjoyed sleuthing along with Tess, her aunt and friends. I think the series gets better and better as the reader gets to know the characters more. I found it delightful.

There are 5 books in the series, and I look forward to the next two.

Tessa Treslow and her aunt have agreed to be featured on the TV show Picks with Ricks, hoping that the hosts will find some treasure in the old garage they need to clear out. But one of the hosts has his eye on the car that Tessa has almost finished restoring. That is until the car becomes a crime scene with the dead body of the show’s camera man inside. Who killed him? And why was the car involved?

While a TV crew being the subject of a murder isn’t new, the set up for this one still caught my attention. The more I read, the more I got hooked, with a mystery from the past also drawing me in. Everything made sense by the time we hit the climax. Meanwhile, the characters get better with each book. I’m loving the series regulars, and the suspects kept me guessing. I’m finding each book in the series gets stronger, and I’m looking forward to reading the next soon.

Tessa and Aunt Edna have decided to allow a TV film crew on site, and while they're digging through history and treasures in the old house & barn, one of the crew is murdered and an old bloody scene is found/ Of course this sets Tessa right in the thick of it again, and her mom is none too pleased to see Summer involved as well, even if it is just digitally.

For me, this book started off slow, but started picking up half way through. Once it did, it was a phenomenal read!

MWSA Review

Murder Comes Home by Rosalie Spielman is a cozy mystery with all the elements required to fit the subgenre of crime fiction. Spielman’s story is characterized by a focus on suspense, misdirection, and an intriguing plot. She avoids graphic violence and profanity while setting the stage with two amateur sleuths, Aunt Edna and her niece, Army retiree Tessa Treslow.

The story takes place in the small, close-knit community of New Oslo, Idaho complete with quirky characters, including two elderly sisters, Ginny and Olive Prunn, who are good at local historical genealogies as well as noticing everything that goes on in New Oslo from their storefront windows.

As with most cozy mysteries, this one also has an underlying humorous tone that made me chuckle occasionally. The victim of the crime is not particularly likable, and many have a motive to want him out of the picture. Tessa and Edna focus on the complicated puzzle of solving the mystery and begin to uncover a tortured family history of the previous occupants of their home.

As the story unravels, author Spielman deftly intersperses believable red herrings to keep the reader guessing who the real culprit is. As with most cozy mysteries, this one is solved by Tessa and Edna in a satisfying and happy ending, restoring order and peace to New Oslo, Idaho. I enjoyed following the amateur sleuths on their journey to solve this crime.

Murder Comes Home is the 3rd book in Rosalie Spielman's Hometown Mysteries and it is a good addition to the series. Tessa Treslow, a retired Army veteran, and her Aunt Edna are restoring old cars. Their barn has been around for a long time and had stuff stored in it from the previous owners. They agreed to have the TV show Picks With Ricks do a segment and they would hopefully buy some stuff. The stars of the show were Ricki and Chick along with their assistant Irma, cameraman Lucas and producer Arthur. A podcaster Deeda is in town and the reason is suspicious The cameraman Lucas is found dead in Aunt Edna's restored car and secrets are plentiful. The TV crew, Deeda, and a couple of locals are the suspects. Tessa, neice Summer, and Aunt Edna worked together to help best friend Freddie, a police deputy, catch the culprit. Tessa is dating Nick but they are keeping it platonic until his divorce is finalized. It is nice that they meet for coffee or meals occasionally. I guessed some of the mystery but wasn't sure until near the end. This is an enjoyable cozy mystery and I am looking forward to the next.book. I enjoyed the audiobook narrated by Eleanor McCormick. #MurderComesHome #HometownMysteries #GemmaHallidayPublishing

What an exciting installment in the Hometown Mysteries series! And if you like TV shows about pickers discovering treasures amongst the junk, this one will especially appeal to you! Or what about local history and missing people? Oh, want a smidge of romance? Red herrings galore? All this and more await you in this terrific book.

Small town Idaho sounds like it should be calm and a little on the boring side...but no! Bursting with mysteries, interesting citizens, wildlife and more, the author has created a setting that has more surprises than one could anticipate. Great characters that keep revealing life details to the very end make it difficult to predict the exciting conclusion. Then there's Magnus!

A wonderful series, great setting, interesting characters, mysteries, mayhem, and more! I loved it!

Tessa and her Aunt Edna are very excited, as is the rest of the town. A tv show has come to town and they will be looking though their old barn for antique treasures. The tv show brings the entire cast and crew. The show lead is interested in the Mustang that Tessa & Edna have been restoring, but they don’t want to sell it to him. The cast & crew seem to have come with their own personal issues, so there is no shortage of suspects when the cameraman is found dead in the Mustang with his hands zip-tied to the steering wheel. He also had an antique pocket watch with him that is tied to the family who originally owned the family farm. Now that there is a tie to her family, Tessa feels obligated to investigate before anything else can happen! I enjoy the characters in this book, especially the parts that address veterans and some of the issues they face.

Murder Comes Home is the third book in the Hometown Mysteries series by Rosalie Spielman, but it can be read as a standalone. It follows Tessa, a retired army officer who returns to her small town of New Oslo, Idaho, to help her Aunt Edna with her car restoration business. When a TV show called Picks with Ricks arrives in town to hunt for antiques, Tessa and her aunt allow them to rummage through their old garage. But things turn bad when someone ends up dead in one of their restored cars.

Murder Comes Home is a cozy mystery that combines interesting family dynamics and a good mystery. It is a fun and enjoyable read that will appeal to anyone who enjoys cozy mysteries.

Murder Comes Home is an awesome mystery with both an old and a new murder, many red herrings, and the treasure pickers. Tessa and her Aunt Edna are such wonderful characters - vets, master mechanics and amateur sleuths! Having a reality TV show in town just adds another layer of insanity to the small town’s daily dramas. I love these characters and this series. Each book just gets better. I knew to start reading early in the day because there was no way I would put it down before reaching the end!

Murder Comes Home, the 3rd book in Rosalie Spielman's Hometown Mysteries, is at least as good at the first book that totally hooked me. When a TV show featuring two antique pickers come to the farm, they bring lots of intriguing information and an unexpected murder. The investigation is complex but Aunt Edna, Tessa and the local police use intelligence and technology to work their way through the confusing suspects. Tessa and Edna also discover a sad history of their home through diligent research and a bit of luck.

Tessa and Aunt Edna host a reality TV pickers show to find treasures among their things. They didn't figure on murder being one of the things they find.

It's always fun to visit with Tessa and Aunt Edna, two strong women, veterans, and master car mechanics. Murder Comes Home is a well-crafted mystery with layers, like coats of paint on Tessa's beloved truck. So many suspects, so many twists. A new murder and an old one. Fast-paced story that will leave you breathless.

Another great visit to New Oslo, Idaho! There's antique pickers in town and they're picking and filming in Tess and Aunt Edna's barn. When a one hundred year old murder is discovered, and a fresh new body is found, Tess works to find the thread that ties the history to the present.

As always, I loved immersing myself in Tess and Aunt Edna's world. They've started to feel like old friends. Looking forward to their next adventure!
