Oh my was this GOOD!!! LEven though this book featured different MC's, the characters are familiar from the previous book, Dragon Heir. This book follows Callan and Mina, both misguided into going against their natural instincts and supporting shady leaders for "the good of the people" Pfft! We all know there are few leaders that have anything other than their own importance and power in mind. Doing the wrong thing for the right reasons is NEVER a good option! After the disastrous events and a serious dose of guilt and regret, Callan wanders the realm, which is now a tinderbox ready to Ignite. With the wards down, everywhere accessible to everyone, old superstitions and prejudice rears its head among humans and Fae, and new powerful gangs are popping up.
Contrary to his actions in the events leading up to the decimation of the spheres, Callan IS a good guy, he wants to help wherever he can, which is why he jumps in, without much thought, to "save" a damsel in distress. Granted, the damsel is a thief, but still... I really was giggling at this "chronicles of unfortunate incidents" Callan had inadvertently set into motion with his...ummm...heroics. What a fine duo they make, he a traitor, she a jinxed Princess, at odds from the moment they laid eyes on each other and boy did the sparks fly! The bickering? Absolutely priceless! Reunited with Soleia once more, he, grudgingly, undertakes a false betrothal to expose an assassin. But he exposes so much more. Oh how I loved the conflicting thoughts and emotions running through him, trying to decipher fact from fiction. A talent this author possesses, to create a labyrinth so serpentine, the joy was in finding the way out. But she also surprises me along the journey, the maze she reveals, inch by inch, is never what I anticipate, allowing me a glimpse of what might possibly be around the bend and I'm inevitably wrong!
What I'm not wrong about is the likeability of the characters this author breathe's life into, sustainably and only growing on me with every page I read, I'm as much frustrated for them as I am with them. What Ms Breaker does sublimely is perceptions. She injects a realism to this, after all, what you see is NOT always what you get, and assumptions ARE the mother of all f**kups! Her entirely pragmatic approach is spot on, as is the way she gently shows her characters how much they err... seeing that untangle from a tightly wound bundle of wool is simply stupendous. These are among the few areas she excels at. Oh who am I kidding, Ms Breaker excels FULL STOP! With characters like Callan, the perfect hunk seeking redemption; Mina, the perfect. .ummm... snarky, mischievous, impetuous and a heck of a mouth on her, as well as firm favourites Soleia and Dathon, impressive is all I can say! Unfolding events in an awesome plot, yeah, excel is the only fitting word.
But the shocker of events in the last few chapters had my head pounding, my heart racing and I swear to the high heavens, I was shocked at HOW Ms Breaker duped me, over and over again, like seriously, my mouth gaping as the adrenaline raged through my veins, a true master of magically cloaking incidences, motives and the final reveal couldn't be more earthshattering! Brilliant! As is the very tumultuous romance between Mina and Callan, they are the epitome of cool denial, slowly backing up towards a wall with nowhere to go except to acknowledge "my home is you" Every inch of me was vibrating with pleasure at this utterance. The ending, fittingly explanatory for the series The Curse of the Arcadian Stone, which I've read, which you need post haste!
What I really enjoy when reading a SR Breaker book is the almost immediate action. There's no gentle easing into a story, it's adrenaline spiked from the onset. Aside from the weapons kind of action, there's action of the heart too. Her prose is so effortless yet her banter is one of the best I've read. Comical, quick witted, fully engaging. Her characters too are quick witted, flawed and thoroughly captivating, extremely relatable. The perfect balance between sass, humour, action, romance, drama and intrigue set this fast paced and frankly delightfully unique book apart from the norm. And THAT'S why I can with confidence recommend any of this author's books!
