After surviving the death of my parents and being tortured at the hands of their murderers, I have no interest in living life as the omega Mafia princess I am. A future with anyone? Not interested. Mates and a fairytale pack life? Pffft. That’s only on the TV shows I’m addicted to. All I want is a home where my twin brother and I can live out our lives in peace. I’m pretty sure I have all of that after a successful morning of thieving on the New York City streets. It’s straightforward—sell the expensive watch at the pawnshop and grab a cheap apartment. But it all comes crashing down when the ex-Mafia prince turned billionaire businessman catches me stealing from him and blackmails me into being a thief for him. It’s only one job, one that I have no choice but to do. And then my brother and I are gone. My plans go from bad to worse when I scent-match his pack. The temptation of these dangerous men wreaks havoc on my biology. I don’t want them—okay, maybe I do, a little—but I don’t need them. So I’ll fight tooth and nail against the draw each of them has on me. My goal is to finish the job unattached. Who needs a pack? Not this girl . I’ll never give up my freedom. Because I know how that ends.
It hooked me in the beginning- the action, the bond of siblings and doing what they had to do to survive... but it seemed to loose the focus of the plot and become more of a romance between the FMC and her alphas.. which wasn't bad, but I couldn't really get into the middle of the book.
The bond between the siblings was said on paper, but I couldn't feel it because Sin wasn't really talked about. Their past is still somewhat of a mystery.
In the beginning I was entranced, the h and her brother doing what they need to just to survive after the horrors they've been through. Strong h I loved being in her head. Good plot , great flow but somewhere along the way things got dropped. There were moments it lagged and moments I was just tired if the great big secret 🙄and moments where I was like somebody TALK for craps sake. I'm a big fan of omega verse but this was the first time I've heard of a sigma. One if the men started off as a beta but the H as his true mate or whatever causes his designation to shift. This was pretty interesting The danger lurking in the background became a subplot when the MCs started boinking. For instance one of the bad guys admits that they've been closing in on her and her brother's location, that they even spotted her brother's a club. Does the h immediately fly to her brother's side to warn him.....ummmm nooooooo she doesn't! I was so confused by this point! The ppl who did such horrid shit to her brother have spotted him and you don't go immediately to warn him? Ugh Anyways for what it was it wasn't a bad read, I enjoyed the h
Meh sexy times, I actually skipped most which is a pure tragedy to me Non manwhore MCs M/M as the men were together before the h and loved each other
Not interested in book 2 at this time, not sure how I feel about 2 omegas in a pack 😔
***ETA it irked me endlessly that oftentimes a chapter began with the end of the previous chapter just from another one of the MCs pov 🙄🙄🙄 I literally just read through that ma'am why would I want to read it again
A fantastic read. This is the first book I've ever read that has used Sigma sure I've read book with a switch of Designation but never with this terminology. I cannot wait for Sins book both him and Audrey deserve so much happiness.
I would have really enjoyed to have a read what happened in the twins past and how they got to where they are now. Maybe we might in Sins book.
The one tiny problem I did have was how the last of the chapters were the first thing in the next chapter but from someone else's point of view it was alot of repeating the same thing I had just read just someone else's view. It didn't seem necessary
Overall a fantastic read and thoroughly enjoyed Thank you for the ARC
I'm always down for an omegaverse storyline and this drew me right in from the beginning!
I loved Audrey & Sin. Audrey is perfectly jaded as a character and I loved the building dynamic between her and her pack. Some darker themes, but I think the angst of it all was written great!
First time reading this author and will definitely check out their other work. Also can't wait for the second half of this duet and to see what happens next!
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
3.5 ⭐️ I received an ARC copy of this book, and this is my honest review. Decent enough OV. We have your typical traumatized Omega that wants nothing to do with Alphas since she and her twin were brutalized at the hands of Alphas they trusted. Queue your "golden retriever vibe" unassuming Beta to sorta, kinda pave the way, well, up until a tiny twist (not gonna ruin it, you'll see for yourself). Then there's the 2 Alphas in the pack: one is smitten off the hop, the other is the "we don't need an omega" type. But then you throw in the promise of an Oceans Eleven inspired art heist, and I was very interested to see how it would all unfold. Imagine my disappointment when the heist was a dud - I was expecting some mission impossible themed repelling down from a skylight into the middle of a room over run with tiny lasers etc (don't judge, I'm not a writer lol)... setting aside my dejection about the less than satisfactory art heist, the story itself was sweet. I liked how the relationship between Audrey, Saint, Austin and Felix developed, it seemed organic and realistic, unlike a lot of OV where it's instalove, that was a breath of fresh air. Overall, I'm quite interested in reading the follow-up book about the other twin Sin as his trauma and subsequent way of dealing make him a very appealing storyline.
I can't wait for the twin's storyline. He has as much darkness as Audrey, if not more. Twin Mafia twins that escaped being tortured after their parents death. A pack wanting to find the right Omega. And a thief that brings them all together. This book packed a punch full of feels and a different perspective on switches. Please sit back and enjoy a Mafia Omegaverse that is a small pack, but have huge hearts.
This had no right to be this adorable when it had so much torture in it. I found myself grinning through so many of the MFCs interactions with her alphas.
And I really, really, really hope that guy in the pink suit makes an appearance in Sin's story.
This was a - largely - enjoyable book. I would say it's 3.5 stars, overall. It had some flaws that could've easily been fixed to bring it up to a 5 star read, if it had an editor. And it definitely would've benefitted from an editor - it was clear it didn't have one. I took a half a star off for each flaw.
1) While it's not terrible grammar, there are a lot of mistakes that should've been caught. Most commonly words were switched (quite/quiet) or words were used that didn't have the meaning the author thought (using withdrawals instead of withdraws or roll for role, for example). But when I read a character's name misspelled, I knew that would lower my rating. I can be more forgiving for grammar that spellcheck overlooks, but I get borderline hostile when something so simple is spelled wrong. After all, if the author doesn't care enough about her characters to know how their names are spelled, why should we? Luckily, it was a secondary character, but irritating nonetheless, especially in combination with other noticeable grammar.
2) Other than that, an editor likely would've made corrections that left lingering questions. Why was the painting so important? Aside from previously belonging to Austin's family and - presumably - having been stolen before the book starts, why is that one so important? And the villain is extremely one-dimensional. Almost see-through. He barely has any time on the page and when he does, it's like he's a caricature, making choices that make no sense. And who is Melody? Why does she keep popping up and making snide comments and then disappearing? She's not important to the plot - I'm hoping she's not a future MC of her own book, but she had no purpose.
3) And lastly, it suffers from a big problem with 1st person POV books: repeating unnecessary scenes. It's really annoying, as a reader, to be in the moment and then have to backtrack, just to get the perspective of the second character. Write in 3rd person if you're going to do this, that way you can jump around to your hearts content. I'm biased, because I prefer 3rd person anyway, but it is something that takes away from the flow.
And an honorary mention to repetition: Using the word "orbs" too much. Eyes, gaze, glance, look - there are so many ways to describe someone studying someone else. Orbs just makes me think of marbles popping out. My own quirk - nothing I counted off for in my rating, but a search showed it was used six times and that was six times too many! And 24 mentions of Felix playing with his lip ring - tugging it between his teeth, pulling at it, etc. We get it. He has a piercing. Let it go. Also, that kind of worrying to it will leave a major scar. Granted, fictional character, yes, but I sat there wanting to tell him to quit it.
Other than that, I did enjoy the overall story. I don't think I've read a Mafia Omegaverse before. Granted, this one is on the periphery of the mafia, but it was still an interesting setting. All of the main characters were unique in their own ways - something I always enjoy in RH. Audrey definitely had some darkness within, so it's always a good thing when the title fits the book. And I love that each man had a unique relationship with her, building at different times and in different ways. Sadly, this is unique among most RH books, but I notice and appreciate when each relationship is treated as individual to the characters and not just a collective of all the men and the FMC.
One thing I'm finding is way too common in omega books: the heat is always at the end. By that time, I'm kind of over it. I wish some of these plots could have it when it actually pushes the plot forward, and not just a way to close out the book with sex. If anyone has suggestions on books that do that, I'm always looking for recs in this category (no cheating - that's my only line).
I did like this one, even with its flaws. I'm intrigued enough by this world to pick up Sin's book. Looking forward to finding out the layers of his character.
Audrey and her twin brother Sin (both Omegas) are on the run. After their father’s second-in-command (Audrey’s dad was head of the DeLuca Mafia family) murders him and those loyal to him and brutally tortures Audrey, they fake their deaths and run.
Audrey and Sin live on the streets or in lousy hostels, stealing to afford the barely able to live, life, they have. One day Audrey steals from an Alpha, Austin Zade, an ex mafia “prince.” He catches her and blackmails her into helping him with a heist - knowing no one would suspect an Omega of stealing something at this high end function. While waiting for the event, he houses her and her brother in one of the high rises he owns, and also lives in with his pack members, Saint and Felix.
Felix is the only Beta in the Zade Alpha pack…UNTIL HE SCENTS AUDREY!! Instantly her scent switches him to Sigma and then to an Alpha designation…this can only mean one thing, Audrey is Felix’s FATED MATE, which means she is also Saint and Austin’s fated mate as well. There are just a few major problems; one of them being the fact that lead Alpha Austin DOES NOT WANT AN OMEGA in his pack (he was burned once by an Omega he thought he loved) and Audrey is hellbent ON NOT MATING ANY ALPHAS after the sh*t show that occurred with the last Alpha she trusted who betrayed and tortured her!!
Both Audrey and Austin agree (well Audrey doesn’t have much choice since she’s being blackmailed- but she loves not living on the streets any longer, and being able to help her brother) on a PLATONIC partnership until the heist is over, what they didn’t plan for…Saint and Felix refusing to let their fated mate go.
The story - I think I said it’s not original because it’s so incredibly predictable, and there really isn’t much action. Being a mafia omegaverse novel IT HAD THE POTENTIAL to be original, but it fell short. It wasn’t an awful read, just not exceptional.
Most the action takes place OFF PAGE, and the mafia aspect (which could’ve been exciting and better utilized) is barely scratched upon! The “bad guy” gets his comeuppance, but only AT THE VERY END, and considering how Sin, Audrey and the gang tortured the evil guys lackeys, I had hoped for more, if not worse for the head honcho that orchestrated, and killed their mafia boss father. Maybe I’m bloodthirsty, lol, but I thought he died WAY TOO QUICKLY!!
The sex is pretty steamy, and you do have multiple person sex on page, but for some reason it feels as if it’s “lacking” something. I think one of the problems is that this is a mafia OMEGAVERSE novel and you don’t really FEEL that much of the A/B/O dynamics in this book. Audrey’s heat is all but glossed over…she doesn’t nest, doesn’t really have many preheat symptoms, and when she does go into heat it’s like, wham bam, thank you ma’m…they have sex and then boom, fast forward to the next chapter and four days have passed and her heats over.
In the end it just felt like either a VERY, VERY WATERED DOWN MAFIA ROMANCE NOVEL, or a VERY WATERED DOWN OMEGAVERSE NOVEL! The two didn’t seem to mesh together all that well.
In conclusion though, if you need an EASY Omegaverse novel (NOT HEAVY on the Omegaverse aspect) then pick up “The Darkness Within,” it’ll take you no time to get through it.
It was quite intriguing at the beginning as there is this whole concept of hidden twins, deceitful plots and of course some rather alluring alphas on the horizon. Quite liked the idea of sigma as that is not something that appears often in this genre. I have to say that I was more interested in the FMC's twin, Sin, who I reckon will get his own story at some point. The main heroine started off as quite confident and deadly set on not trusting others, but then all of a sudden she is swept off her feet. I do understand that due to the nature of the genre this evolve rather fast, but still I needed more relationship development aside from the intimate moments.
Overall, pleasant book to read with some rather interesting side characters. I hope that I tap into Sin's story soon as something tells me that it might just be rather good.
I really liked it at first but then it goes downhill. The strong sibling relationship from the beginning disappears, Felix becomes sigma, he is supposed to have all three designations but it is never touched upon again (which would be very interesting) and he remains alpha throughout the book. There is no good group sex scene with the 3 of them, the heat is mentioned but there is not explicit rut scene… A very disappointing ending to such a promising start
This was an ARC and I am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
“The Darkness Within” by A.J. Moran is a why choose Omegaverse romance with a darker theme. While the majority of the book revolves around Audrey and her guys navigating their way through their relationship, there are some darker story lines that may be triggering to some. For my personal tastes, I would consider this dark lite.
Audrey is an Omega on the run and in hiding with her twin brother, Sin. Due to things that have happened to both of the twins, neither on trusts easily, only each other. She has a well-placed hatred to Alphas and does whatever she can to stay out of their crosshairs. She supports herself and Sin by being a pickpocket and she’s really good at it, until she picks the pocket of what she later learns is the wrong person. Or is it?
Austin is an Alpha and the leader of his pack. He’s guarded and only fully trusts his pack mates. He was born a Mafia prince but has left that life behind and is not a legit businessman, mostly. He was burned in the past by an Omega and has sworn to never fall into that trap again. He has his pack and that’s all he wants. Side-note, when Audrey called him Daddy Zade, I swooned. IYKYK 😉
Saint is also an Alpha. He’s the protector of the group. He is so in tune with Audrey from the beginning, it’s like he can read her mind and knows what she wants before she can get the words out.
Felix is the beta of the pack. He gives off golden retriever vibes. He’s like that old favorite sweatshirt that makes you feel comfortable as soon as you put it on. He’s sweet, kind and funny. He’s all in with Audrey almost from the start. And I loved the twist! I did not see that coming but so glad it did!
I was disappointed with Jason’s outcome. I had hoped to see Audrey and Sin both get their revenge. It was too quick and not painful enough.
I know this book was centered on Audrey and her guys but I was a little disappointed with her interactions with Sin. I was wanting more. But if the author’s goal was to leave the reader with yearning for more Sin, she hit her mark. Can’t wait for the next book in the duet!
I loved how this group came together. The guys were patient with Audrey, helping her overcome her fears and making her feel loved and protected. Once Audrey realized her guys were not like the Alphas she encountered in her past she was able to be all in with them. She was fierce and just as protective of them as they were of her. I loved how she stood up for Felix with his parents – it was well deserved. This group worked well together and I was happy for their HEA. I also appreciated the way Austin held out. Even though he had strong feelings for Audrey, I was glad to see he didn’t rush into it with her. He took the time he needed to make sure that what he felt was real and that Audrey wasn’t going to hurt him the way he had been in the past. It was perfect!
This story was very well written and the progression of the story was great! This was the first book I have read from this author and I can’t wait to binge more of her books.
This is an interesting spin on an Omegaverse mixing it with it some mafia themes and two of my favourite tropes, the heist and forced proximity. Audrey and her twin Sin are omegas who have been through a significant level of trauma prior to the events in the book and part one of this duet focuses on Audrey's story as she is roped into helping a former mark pull off an art heist.
I liked how the relationships within the pack developed organically throughout the book and it didn't fall straight into insta-love. All of the characters have baggage and watching them work through it together as well as on their own through the different POV's was much more satisfying. Audrey working through her trauma didn't happen immediately and there were moments when she took two steps forward and one step back but this made it feel more genuine to me. Austin was the standout character from the MMC's as he showed the most growth and his reasons for being reluctant to trust his heart were much more interesting that the usual alpha male stubborn hold out. Felix was an absolute sweetheart and Saint was somewhere in between.
Although I enjoyed establishing the dynamics of the relationships within the pack I was a little disappointed with the pacing towards the end where everything ramped up all at once and the heist pretty much happened off page. After all the build up it did feel a little rush with the resolution of the Jason plotline at the same time however its a minor point; I just wanted to see Audrey in action! The HEA is very sweet though.
Audrey's other key relationship in the book is with her twin Sin. Sin himself was a bit of a mystery and he just wasn't there for quite a lot of the narrative but as he is the focus of book two I did find myself wondering where he was. The scenes nearer the end of the book definitely left me wanting to know more about their past which I hope we find out.
My interpretation of the star system; 3 stars - I enjoyed it; would read the author again 4 stars - I really liked it; I am invested and definitely want more from this author/series 5 stars - I loved it; I engaged with this book completely and I have added all the authors works to my TBR
SYNOPSIS (standalone): The FC, Audrey, and her twin brother, Sin, have been living in hiding on the streets after escaping from the men who murdered her mafia parents and tortured them. Audrey pickpockets for a living. After pickpocketing the wrong Alpha she finds herself having to agree to help steal a painting for them and pretend she is their pack‘s Omega. It turns out she is their scent match and she falls for the members of the pack although the prime alpha fights against his attraction after being betrayed by a previous Omega. There are two Alphas and a Beta. There is a background of the FC tracking down those that hurt her family and getting revenge while she and the pack fall for each other. There‘s a HEA
Heat Level: 🌶️🌶️🌶️/🍆🍆🍆 There are quite a few sex scenes throughout the book and these are hot with some being group as well as some MM action. Otherwise they are relatively vanilla. Whilst plentiful they don‘t entirely take over the book.
Unfortunately this is one of those books that needs a good edit and check for typos which are plentiful and annoying. Other than that the book started strongly buy unfortunately did not follow through. The author sets up the story of two orphans whose father was a mafia don and who was betrayed by those closest to him and he. He and his wife were killed whilst Audrey and Sin were tortured horrifically before they escaped.
I really thought this was going to be a good romance with strong MCs and a strong plot. Unfortunately whilst the MCs were likeable and strong with a good development of their relationship the rest of the story was non-existent. There was no explanation as to exactly who betrayed the FC‘s father or why, there was also not explanation as to exactly why they were tortured, what the torturers wanted or how the FC and her brother escaped. It was also beyond superficial and lazy. The so called revenge scenes seemed to be made up of random men who apparently had „tortured“ the FC or her brother being tortured and killed. In some cases you did not even find out what their names were or exactly how they fitted in to the back story. It was all very random and irritating.
The book is described as a duet which it‘s not. Book 2 is a separate although continuing story that deals with Sin‘s story. I would not recommend this book unless you are into books with no depth or background which make little sense.
Really good story with amazing freaking characters. The beginning of the book it was all about her helping them steal something and It felt like that plotline was basically forgotten along the way. BUT it didn't bother me at all especially bc the book focused a lot of on the romantic side of the story. Don't get me wrong the plot was mentioned here and there but i was barely paying attention to it ngl. I was more focused on the characters and all their back and forth.
I truly TRULY admire Audrey. Her and her twin brother went through literally hell and all they want to do is survive and protect each other. We got to see how close they were but I would have liked a bit more. The scenes that they were together showed how much they love each other and her stealing for a living basically shows she's willing to do anything for her siblings. Once she started dealing with her Alphas we didn't get to see Sin as much as I would have liked.
Now the guys were everything. I am absolutely in love with all 3 of them. Even though there was an instant attraction between her and them I felt like it the romance took its time to actually happen especially cause she didn't trust them. They were the perfect mix of dangerous, sweet, caring, respectful and romantic.
Absolutely loved the character development they had especially Audrey and Austin. They went from being scared of opening up to learning how to accept love and also love with their entire heart.
There was a couple of stuff that happened in the book that was a bit different from any other OV book I've ever read. It was a really enjoyable book. There was great Chemistry and tension between all the characters. The plot even though it got somewhat lost it was still resolved at the end. Can't wait to read Sins book!
I've read many of AJ Moran's series and was excited to read this book. This is part of a duet but is a standalone story. The duet revolves around a pair of omega twins (Audrey and her brother Sin), the second part of the duet will feature Sin.
It was refreshing to see that the MMCs were not complete jerks. Two of the three males pretty much fall in love with her early on. This was a relatively low angst and primarily focus on the developing relationships between the characters. Of course we have one that holds out on mating.
I was a bit disappointed thinking this would have an exciting heist and when the job does occur, it happens off-page. In fact, not much planning of said heist happens either. It seemed like a convenient plot device to get the characters together.
Throw in the mix that Sin & Audrey are in hiding after someone eradicated their Mafia family. Sin shows up here and there in the story. He's protective of his sister and apparently enjoys torturing people too. Austin, one of the main leads, is also formerly part of the mafia. That part of the story just didn't mesh well and wasn't very well developed.
I think this story would have flowed better if it was a duet instead of cramming it into one book. Standalones are tricky especially when developing relationships between characters, however, this book did that well. The relationships didn't feel forced even though the angst\trouble was.
Okay first, this is a solid book. Pretty well written, solid characters, a unique storyline, and good omegaverse elements.
It’s just not for me and I didn’t finish. I don’t finish novels I don’t vibe with anymore, and that’s okay. It’s still a very good book and story, I genuinely like this author’s work. I adored her Knot Broken story!
I love omegaverse, but I DNF’d this novel because I really couldn’t grasp Audrey. I like her at times and completely am thrown for a loop at others. She’s smart, a bit cunning and manipulative, but she doesn’t use those aspects of herself in a way which make sense. Granted I only got 54% of the way through and I’m sure there was character development, I didn’t feel like skimming through. Maybe I’ll come back later and re-read again and finish, I don’t know yet. She’s a complex MC, and I would’ve possibly finished had I gotten a bit more into her mind that I saw presently. She comes off a bit cruel in her thoughts, especially towards herself and her men.
***Spoiler***
My main pet peeve is why she’d mentally tell herself “One week of being their omega completely” while acting in a self destructive manner when she could’ve directed that energy into manipulating those men (prolly wouldn’t even make them mad) into getting revenge, getting her security and safety back. Maybe she does do this later, idk, but the immediate throw towards self destruction threw me in a way. It was at odds with her maturity elsewhere,
ARC REVIEW ✨ (I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily) Rating: 4.25/5 My review: What happens when you and your twin escape from the clutches of the Mafia, only to be contracted back in because you get caught pickpocketing? You find the pack you never wanted in the first place. Audrey and her twin are finally safe and hidden after their past with the Mafia. They make do by cashing out on the items Audrey steals from unsuspecting people. Until them. When the pack decides to make a deal with her she can’t refuse, she finds herself not only falling back into the Mafia, but falling in love too.
We love a good omegaverse, RH romance. While I wouldn’t classify it too much as a dark romance, it definitely isn’t for my lighthearted book lovers. The mix of the domineering from Austin, safekeeping from Dean/Saint and the comfortability with Felix made me happy. I was so thankful none of them were crazy psychos and they all had their green flags (and red 🤭). The book has multi-POV’s that overlap so that you can see multiple sides of the same scene. I don’t remember ever reading a book that has this, and I really appreciated it! I found it to be unique and honestly a genius idea. I was only disappointed that Audrey didn’t have the fight in her that I thought she would have, this is a great fast paced, (lighter) dark romance with a why choose HEA. Give it a read babes!
I found myself really liking this one and each of the characters. I don't think there's any one main character I didn't end up liking. I did wish we had some more twin bonding time between Audrey and Sin as Sin isn't all that present in this book, but they did get to torture together and get a little vengence so there's that haha The storyline is interesting and halfway through it slows down and focuses on the relationship building between the main characters. Which lightened the feel of this book from the darker themes (not a bad thing). This book introduced the concept of a new designation (sigma) which is the culmination of all three designations and are awakened only when they meet their fated mate. That being said, once Felix was triggered into a sigma, the only way he's described, and referred to, from then on is as an alpha. Which leaves me a little confused on the sigma designation, it would make more sense to be a switch and switch between beta/alpha or a very late blooming alpha. He didn't have any omega characteristics (i'd have loved to see maybe her heat and it triggering a semi heat for him, or even nesting). I was also left with one more question in that when Austin sets Audrey up to steal his watch and catch her, he uses an alpha bark to tell her to stop. Every omega around obeyed but she didn't. How? Low key, I'm hoping book two has some more Audrey/Sin time.
I liked the story and the premise. Each character had its own intrigue. It's alluded to in the author's note, but to me, it wasn't 100% clear, so just to clearly put it out there, there is mm content in the book. Super light in the beginning, barely anything, then nothing a good portion of the book,(I actually liked and thought their relationships with and without her worked well without them being involved with each other)...then like around 70% of the book, the mfc brings it up and OKs it and although not extremely heavy, it's definitely present from then on. So if you like it, it's there, for those like me that's not particularly into that, it's tolerable and you don't miss much by skipping past if need to. The ending with Jason felt a bit rushed and anticlimactic, and I was a bit bummed that the heat didn't lead to a baby or any mention of one. I would have liked if there was a second or extended epilogue after a time jump where we saw them having or had 1 or more and see the new dynamic. Since I'm not into mm and the next book is Sins, It's unlikely that I'll see if that occurs so it would have been nice to wrap up and have in theirs. Overall it was a good book and I enjoyed the read. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
This was my introduction to an omegaverse. I will admit I had to Google a few phrases! It was an interesting dynamic for me as any RH I’ve read weren’t MM (or MMM) prior to adding the FMC to the mix so it was a learning experience all around. I appreciated the different POV especially with the overlap on pivotal scenes. It really provides some depth into how this group functions as a whole rather than just one character’s take on these big moments.
I liked all the MCs a lot. I liked that though Audrey is an omega she still has a spine and she’s got a good sense of what’s hormonal behaviour and when she’s the one in the driver’s seat. She sort of gets the best of all the worlds in her mates. If I had to pick a favourite though it would have been Felix!
The group dynamics and relationships were the best part of the book. I think I might have gotten a little more into the story had it been a little more action packed. The heist and mafia elements are what drew me in, but I think they played second fiddle to this mate/scent match storyline.
I received a complimentary ARC; thoughts are my own.
Wow. I did not expect to love these characters as much as I do. I was lucky enough to revive a free copy through book sirens, and as a new reader of A.J Moran I'm happy I took the leap. Trauma is hard to express in novels for some authors, but I truly enjoyed the interactions and effects it had throughout the novel. It truly made it feel like Audrey was a human, even if you wanted to shake her sometimes haha. It was the same with the men, they each had their own levels of trauma and different coping mechanisms and outlook. I truly wish we had more time or had it stretched out to two books to really get into the relationships, but I know this format is what's popular at the moment.
The only thing I wish that was different was the relationship between her and her brother, I don't know if I just was expecting something different but given their past I would have thought they'd be together more often. I do understand he has his own issues, but I wish we could have seen their relationship build. Maybe in the next book!
Audrey has being burnt in the past from an aggressive Alpha and along with her twin has fled from him. Using her skills as a pickpocket to survive she unwittingly gathers the attention of another powerful alpha.
Audrey is cornered into using her skills to help a pack. And her past trauma has her resenting her position.
This is more light banter, witty come backs and playful romps as Audrey falls for all 3 and they in turn realise they can’t live without her.
This is heavy on the spicy times with occasional sword crossing (MM) and I kept waiting for the drama. Expecting a kidnapping or perilous situation to arise. Instead, there was character bonding and lots of “happy” scenarios before we get to the climatic life threatening ending. I felt the past trauma was glossed over and the author focused on bringing a lighter story.
I received an advance review copy for free, and this is my honest review, all opinions are my own and are given without prejudice.
Gritty, with some dark undertones but balanced really well with the sweetness and protectiveness between an Omega and her Alphas.
Audrey and her twin are living on the streets, as heirs to a mafia fortune, the last place you would think they'd be. The events that have led them there are torturous, literally. Audrey is keeping them afloat with her knack for thieving, until she steals from the wrong Alpha.
Austin, Saint and Felix need a thief and Audrey meets their criteria, they totally weren't prepared for her smart mouth, hatred of Alpha's or her tantalising scent.
What follows is a fab story full of revenge, letting go, learning to trust and plenty of heat and spice.
I can't wait for the second book now, about Audrey's twin, Sin.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
The Darkness Within is book one in the Sins Of Darkness Duet by A.J. Moran.
💜 omegaverse 💜 found family 💜 forced proximity 💜 mysteries 💜 🌶🌶🌶🌶 spicy spice
Audrey just had to muddle through snatching a few things off of these stinky pedestrians so they can find a safe place to lay their heads and food for their bellies. When she spots an expensive looking watch, she just can’t resist. But how does that saying go? Sometimes things are too good to be true? One pawned watch later and an alpha is asking her to help steal something valuable for him? Will she do it? Will everything work out? Will she and her brother stay safe?
This was a fun take on an omegaverse. It wasn’t completely about an omega finding her pack. There were so many other threads of storyline happening as well. It lead to a nice depth of story and world building.I can’t wait to read the next book in the duet and see what happens next.
I've read paranormal books by this author, and can I just say she's new to writing omegaverse, but she did a fantastic job! This story had absolutely everything I love.
Audrey, our fmc, is a thief she steals to support herself and her twin brother. There's definitely past trauma in both their lives. When Audrey steals from the wrong alpha, she now must agree to their terms to stay out of jail.
The men are powerful and a bit psycho. They are dangerous alphas with some mafia ties. They are trying to be legitimate businessmen. I liked the designations in this one, and I've usually read betas turning into omegas. Never have I read a book with the designation switches to alpha.
I'm really looking forward to Sin's story. If anyone deserves a HEA, it's him. I'm wondering if one of the characters in this book ends up being mated to him.
I loved this read! The fast pace of it, the why choose of course, the Omegaverse with a darker theme. So that is what really kicked it off for me. I enjoy the darker themed recently.
So our main character is Audrey who is an Omega and on the run with her twin Sin. So somethings happened to them that involves their family which is why they are on the run and not trusting anyone. For good reason they do not like Alphas.
Enter Austin, Saint, and Felix who try their hardest to stay away from the pickpocket but need her for a job. What they end up finding out is that you cannot always keep away from the other half of your soul.
So I did really enjoy this story line, the characters and pace. What I would have liked to see more of was of interactions with her brother Sin. I love a good family unit story. Overall a pretty good read.
Long ago two mafia fathers got together to join their houses, but death intervened. Austin wants revenge for his father’s death by stealing a painting back that was his father’s. Sunny and Sin are trying to fly under the radar of the mafia goons that killed their parents. Austin catches Audrey when she picks his pocket for a second time.He wants to hire Sunny to steal the painting. Austin, Saint and Felix loved their pack the way it was. When Audrey is “added” to their pack all sorts of things happen. I LOVED this book! I can’t wait for the next one. This book does have some triggers so be fore warned.
