In this revision of his classic book Richard Whittington challenges the basic assumptions of management orthodoxy. By applying four basic theoretical approaches of strategy-making to a series of key strategic issues, Whittington demonstrates the practical implications of different theories with many examples. Students are then challenged to critically evaluate their own personal approach to strategy-making in practice. The new edition is fully updated to cover the latest issues in strategy including expanded coverage of the resource-based and knowledge-based views of the firm, and utilises new examples from the international, service and 'ebusiness' sectors.
Richard Whittington is a prominent academic in the area of Corporate Strategy. Currently at the Saïd Business School of the University of Oxford, Whittington has been influential in the Strategy-as-Practice approach, a more sociological and less managerial approach to the study of business strategy[citation needed]. Whittington has two children: Georgina and Richard.
This review is purely based on my own perception. First, I have not read the whole book, except for the first chapter and a glance through others. It's too theoretical. The style of writing is also not so impressive and interesting. Personally, I believe the opening must be catchy and draw the readers into the frame of discussion rather than just writing some theoretical stuff. Also the content is not formatted properly. Just because the book must be short, the content must not be dumped into a page. It appears as if the whole page is filled with so much information and it doesnt interest me to read further. Because of these few reasons I just dropped reading the book (Although there MIGHT be good content somewhere in the middle or at the end). I sincerely wish the author to make a better attempt next time!
