Can they put up a happy front for one more holiday? A compelling new novel of marriage and misgivings from the author of The Two-Week Promise.
Charlotte and Bryan have been separated for six months, disappointed that the fairy-tale future they imagined at their wedding didn’t quite come true. Bryan, a policeman, was constantly working, while Charlotte struggled with household finances and a baby. And their son’s recently diagnosed autism has caused further strain.
However, there’s one thing Bryan hasn’t managed to get around telling his parents about the separation. Now, as Christmas approaches, he asks Charlotte to play along and construct a festive façade during the holiday visit. But just like fairy tales, family gatherings never seem to go as planned—and the couple will finally have to figure out if the New Year will mark the end of their marriage or a resolution to begin again . . .
Regina Brownell resides on Long Island, New York, between the city lights of Manhattan, and the beautiful beaches of the Hampton’s. When her oldest child was born, she became a stay-at-home mom. With the support of her husband, three children, and three fur-babies, Regina spends her time balancing mom-life with her love for writing.
Her published works include: The Two Week Promise, One Lucky Christmas and Capturing His Heart.
What an emotional roller coaster. Regina didn't hold back with making you feel so many different emotions. Having read the two week promise I was already familiar with these characters and to see what had become of them broke me. Through out this book I felt everything Charlotte was feeling and I think I've now cried myself dry. If you want a quick emotional read with a little bit of spice I would recommended this holiday read.
After I read this book I discovered there is another book The Two Week Promise with these characters in.
Let me start by saying I am not a big fan of romance. However, I am a huge fan of Christmas stories all genres.
For me the story was a slow start. I was eager to get to Bryan’s family home and start all the Christmas stuff! Finally got there after nearly a quarter of the way through. While waiting for the Christmas bit to start I fell in love with Charlotte. I wanted to take her out of the book and give her a hug!
Charlotte is on an emotional roller coaster throughout the story. Who could blame her! Bryan is so tense and refuses to talk to her.
Charlotte and her husband, Bryan had a happy start to their relationship, then suddenly everything changed. He changed. That’s when the split came. They remained friendly for the sake of their son. But 6 months later Bryan needed a big favour from Char — pretend that they were still happily married and spend a week with his family for Christmas.
And here we have a typical Christmas Romcom. We know the story, so is it worth reading? Yes. There’s a little more thrown in the mix with this Romcom. There are signs of typical life struggles. For example; their son has just been diagnosed on the spectrum — the way the child reacts to different situations and people is heartbreaking. Seeing how his parents are struggling with the diagnoses is an eye opener. On top of that, Bryan is an officer, lately he’s been working long hours. This touches more real life issues. Then there’s the split, we see how Charlotte tries to cope as a single parent. All of these issues connect the reader to the story. The reader becomes part of the story.
The story is written well. The flashbacks bounce back and forth clearly. The characters are lovable, believable — a strong point to the story.
This has been a fun, emotional & spicy read. I have enjoyed this book, even though I knew what was coming at the end.
I do recommend it to all Romcom lovers.
Thank you to Bloodhound publishing for this ARC

This book had me hooked from start to finish, now normally I absolutely dislike romance novels but this book changed my views for sure , I laughed , I cried , I felt every emotion that Charlotte did , her marital problems I have felt myself , so I understand how she felt and it hit home . I’m so glad we all get a happy ending . And I just love how close she is with her brother and her best friend , I will definitely be buying another book from this author.

This book stands alone (it's my first from the author) but it is part of the same world and shares characters with "The Two Week Promise". You are totally fine if this is the first book you're picking up, but I will say I want to go back and read the other book to get more detail on the story we got tastes of from the side characters (her BFF and her Brother).
A beautiful story of a relationship in trouble. Girl meets boy, falls in love, they get married, have a child, then.... things start going sideways. This book starts there. It's supposed to be the happily ever after... but it doesn't stay that way.
You get shocked numb in the beginning of the book when Charlotte and Brian can't communicate with each other effectively (not that either of them would have been able to understand the issues themselves at that point) and it leads to separation. 6 months later Brian asks Char to follow through with the commitment to a Christmas/New Years vacation with his family because he never told them they were having issues.... umm yeah... Let's see how well that plays out (spoiler, there's swoony reminders of why they fell in love to begin with as well as angsty moments trying to deal with why they fell apart).
Then we travel along with Charlotte (single POV so we only ever know what she's thinking and feeling) as they reconnect, talk and find hope again... but when the holiday is over, can that translate back into their everyday lives or will all the problems come back up again in time?
The back 3rd of the story is where Regina broke my heart and made me cry all the tears at 4am. I couldn't put the book down until I could sigh with relief and smile at the conclusion. I needed it to get better...
For anyone who has started to lose track of themselves in all of life's changes, who know that making the time, spending the effort, to stay connected to your partner (and yourself) is hard work. This story sees you! This book was all too real for me at times and I loved it. Regina did an amazing job at bringing that struggle of the day to day relationship battle to life and how it feels when it seems like you're the only one fighting. Thank you Regina!!!
I requested and received an advanced copy of the eBook. These are my honest opinions.
Though this is the second book in the series, The Ex-Agreement can be read as a standalone too. This book starts where a lot of books end: After the supposed "happily ever after". Charlotte and Bryan fell in love, got married, had a kid, and lived… well, not as happily as they thought their ever after might go. When things get rough, and the stress of life starts taking a toll, they agree that maybe this isn’t the best thing after all, and though it hurts, they decide to separate. However, since it’s the holidays, Charlotte agrees to go home with Bryan to have one last family Christmas. They’ll tell his family after, when it's not such bad timing.
Though it's told from Charlotte's POV, you can tell both she and Bryan are desperately wishing it could work, but neither one knows how to fix things. Struggling with getting their autistic child the help he needs, and Bryan's stressful job, they keep getting glimpses of the happiness and love they used to have. Before life got hard. Could they make it work again, or is it just too late?
What I liked about this book was that both characters were flawed but trying. It's not often we get a strong male character (a police officer) who also struggles and stutters when he’s upset. It also highlighted how HARD it is being a mom, and that motherhood is not all a woman is defined by after having kids. It’s ok to want a life and a job too! (Their son, Hunter, is adorable by the way.) This book also made me really wish I had a big brother. 😊
If you're looking for a story set during the holidays that will make you want to bake cookies, possibly cry a little along the way, and sit up on alert with only 5% left of the book, then this one's for you!
The Ex Agreement was my first book by Regina Brownell and I loved it! I don’t often seek out marriage-in-trouble romance, but I’m glad I dove into this sweet, holiday second chance. Regina’s characters are dynamic, relatable, and endearing. After a sweep-her-off-her-feet meet cute, Charlotte and Bryan had a whirlwind romance. As is life, their years of marriage were full of ups and downs. When the strain of parenthood, work, and lack of communication took a toll, the two separated. Teaching student-turned stay-at-home mom, Charlotte is taking her new independence by storm. Bryan is bound to be your new favorite swoony, book-boyfriend in uniform. He’s well-meaning, but his job tends to drive a wedge between Bryan and Charlotte. When he asks Charlotte to celebrate Christmas with his family, they have to put on a normal front. Sparks fly and remind them of the connection they once had. Can forced proximity, communication, and a whole lot of heart rekindle their love? Their son, Hunter often stole the scene and melted my heart. I enjoyed Regina’s storytelling style; the origin story flashbacks we charming and full of heartache as their relationship developed. Regina’s side characters are charismatic, funny, and winsome. I want her besties in my life! This love story is genuine, refreshing, and heartwarming. If you’re looking for a lovely holiday romance with heartfelt family moments, wonderful characters, and doses of reality that tug at the heartstrings, add The Ex Agreement to your TBR.
This book can be read as a stand-alone, but you will have more of a back story on all the characters if you read The Two Week Promise first!
Charlotte and Brian go through a lot in this story and seeing them come out of all of it whole, was beautiful. Some of the topics Regina writes about in this novel are informative to parents and couples. Spouses working long hours and children having medical needs is something I think needs to be brought up more in all books because it makes them more relatable for the readers. A few things had me thinking about what I could do for my own relationship that isn’t even on the rocks! Being an avid romance reader, I got excited when the invitation to Brians parents place for the holidays was brought up! Forced proximity is a favorite of mine!
There were so many emotions throughout the book in present-day and flashbacks. The tension at the in-law’s house will have you wanting to yell at the two MC’s. Both characters finding themselves again was a difficult journey, that I will take again come December. It was a super sweet, emotional story that brings all the love to the surface.
I’m hoping maybe we get a story on Lily sometime in the future, maybe? I 10/10 recommend this sweet holiday rom com! Just bring some tissues along for the ride.
Let me start off by saying that you don’t need to read The Two-Week Promise to enjoy The Ex Agreement. It’s perfectly fine as a standalone. But for fans of the first book, they’ll find this even more enjoyable, as they’ll get more glimpses of Ellie and Logan’s life together. So of course, you’ll want to read The Two Week Promise first! :)
In The Two-Week Promise, we didn’t see much of Charlotte and Bryan, due to them being on their honeymoon, so The Ex Agreement tells their story. And I’ve been waiting for their story! The book begins after they’ve been married for a couple of years and have a child, but they’re having problems. But don’t worry, you’ll still get to enjoy their first moments, as told in flashbacks, which make you want to root even more for them to get back together.
Then comes the fun of Charlotte and Bryan pretending everything is fine in their relationship during the holidays. (Bryan hasn’t told his parents they’re separating.) But once they’re forced to spend some time together, it might just be too hard to deny they still love each other!
I definitely would recommend this book and the first. They go very well together. Looking forward to more from Regina Brownell!
ARC Review: Wow. If I could give this book a million stars I would. Not only for the realness of these characters but also personally because of all the Jonas Brothers references as a fellow jobro fanatic. This book was beyond incredible and so much better than I already knew it would be. Regina Brownell is such an amazing author and writes these amazing characters that feel like real people and not just characters in a romance book. They have true, raw emotions that I feel too with how brilliantly they are written.
I hope that this book finds someone who is going through what Charlotte and Brian experienced in this book, and show them that they can get through the rough times and come back to each other. I really enjoyed that they didn't try to force it and make it work like some other books do because it showed such true emotions and reactions and that it's ok to break down and struggle with those difficult life choices, it's not an easy thing to do and this book truly showed that. I'm so happy that by the end they were able to come back to each other as stronger people because of the help they got on their own and would continue to get together. There is never anything wrong with getting help from therapists and I love how that was presented in this book.
This is the second book I've read by Regina Brownell and this is a good, easy read that flows well. I didn't take to Bryan at first, although he did become more likeable as the book progressed. I liked Charlotte much more and had a lot of empathy for her. The Ex Agreement is a well written book where I liked most of the characters in it. Regina Brownell portrays her characters and their thoughts, emotions and feelings very well. At times though I felt the book was a little too long, a bit too descriptive and I found myself skimming pages and losing a bit of interest. And more than once I wanted to shout at the two main characters to just blooming talk to one another!! I liked the ending which gives fitting closure to the book. Overall - a good read although it didn't wow me. I'd still recommend this though and think others who are fans of romances will enjoy this.
Oh I'm so upset that I read this before seeing that it was actually a book 2!
To be fair, it absolutely read fine as a stand - alone read, but having since read other reviews, I need to now go back and read book 1 and then re-read this one - as I think that I missed out on a lot of character background and development.
In terms of this book though, what a really emotional read!
I found this one even more emotional as it was so relatable. Charlotte and Bryan, having found marriage and a new baby difficult, are separating. Bryan has been avoiding telling everyone, but when his parents invite them for Christmas, he asks Charlotte to help him out and pretend to still be a couple.
I loved how being forced into this close proximity and spending so much time together (as well as "fake" being in love still) made them both really soul search and think about their relationship away from the strains and stresses of their recent pressures.
The flashbacks were great as they filled in some of the missing detail for us and I really felt as though I got to know how the couple had been starting out.
I really enjoyed this book - but am definitely keen to go back to the start and read book 1 - then will probably re-read this and amend my review in the future.
Am also really looking forward to seeing who might be in the spotlight next.
Charlotte and Bryan’s marriage is on the rocks, and parenting a special needs son creates unexpected pressure on their relationship. They decide the fighting has become too much, and they separate. But separately they each have their doubts about what the right thing to do is. As they each navigate their new normal, more questions arise as they wonder, could it possibly work again? As Christmas approaches, Bryan confesses to Char that he never informed his parents that they were separated, and begs Char to keep up the charade as they spend the Christmas holiday with his parents. Sparks are rekindled, there are some steamy romance scenes, and only time will tell if they can find their way back to each other. This was a fun read! I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review. My review was not influenced by receiving an ARC.
I found this so relatable at the moment, this is the situation my brother is facing with his wife this Christmas, although in their case there's definitely no chance of a reconciliation, it's purely for the kids.
The Ex Agreement is the second in a series, of which I had no idea. This didn't distract from my enjoyment of the book in any way. In fact, it's actually turned out to be one of my festive favourites for the year!
I'm assuming the author is a closet Jonas Brother fan, as there were so many references to them throughout - I'm not a lover myself.
It was so easy to become emotionally invested into the plot and the lives of the characters. They felt real, they were relatable and I felt every one of their emotions with them.
I've already added The Two Week Promise to my TBR and look to reading more from Brownell in the future
The beginning and the flow were so good up until the last few chapters. The ending seemed abrupt, and some drama that unfloded in the middle seemed totally unnecessary. So if the ending came up somewhat earlier, it would have been 4 stars for me for sure. Otherwise, it was a totally enjoyable read.
Something i loved about this is how they didn't jump up to the sex part right away even though there was an undeniable attraction. I hate it when they have sex and disclose it as a mistake, but still doing it again and regretting it .
This was a book where adults were trying to work out their problems in a mature way and giving their priority to their kid ....
Sorry, this feels mean, but I just really did not like Brian. He was awful and a jerk. Every time he was in the story he made me mad. He treated Charlotte horribly and somehow she spent almost the entire book blaming herself for the downfall of their marriage. Brian did NOT deserve her and 95% of the book reinforced the mindset that women belong at home raising babies and doing anything to make their husband happy and never questioning them - no matter how childish and immature they are. And he got mad at her for getting therapy? What? Yes, he saw the light at the end. For me it was too little, too late.

This is not my first book by this author but it is one of my favorites yet. This is a cute holiday story that will keep you turning pages to the end. A story that is full of spirt, family and trying to piece together a relationship. I enjoyed how the characters pulled me into their world with ease. They are engaging, connectable and really just add so much to the story. I enjoyed watching their growth throughout as well as their chemistry that made the story easy to read. I really enjoyed this book. I highly recommend it.
I loved this book of losing the love of Charlotte’s life. Will Charlotte and Bryan find their way back to each other. When I got this book, I hadn’t realised it was a follow up to the author’s first book The Two Week Promise (which I loved also). It doesn’t matter if you’ve not read it, as this book can be read as a standalone because it is focusing on two different characters. This is as good as that one. Very emotional, and I couldn’t help crying!! I am now looking forward to this author’s next book.
I was given an ARC of this book, and this is my honest review.
Another quick read, emotional Regina book. Although the atory is not new or unique, Regina makes you feel the characters emotions and brings them to life as if you know them in real life. Unfortunately, also in Regina fashion, there is more background and build up for the ending to come fast and rushed as it was an afterthought. Good read, not safe for teens and quite a bit of adult themes but still worth the few hours.
After the birth of their first son Charlotte and Bryan hit a rough patch in their marriage and he walks out. When Bryan’s family expect them to visit for the Xmas holidays he neglects to tell them about the separation and has to persuade Charlotte to go along and pretend everything is fine. The consequences of this deceit could not be predicted. A great read which evokes lots of emotions, a lovely story.
Charlotte and Bryan have separated but he hasn't told his parents so he asks Charlotte to pretend that they are still together at his parents place for Christmas. I found this to be a fun read and learning a little more about autism was a bonus. The characters are developed well and you can feel there emotions. The story while not all that festive is told around Christmas time. The romance and getting to know Charlotte and Hunter is what I loved about the book.
Thank you for the opportunity to read and review this book 📖
This is the second book I've read by this author and yet again it did not disappoint l, I literally could not put this down.
This book is all about the challenges that marriage faces, work, children, intimacy and the love between 2 people who want to be together but have to face their own problems first before they can truly mend their marriage.
Follow Bryan and Charlotte on their quest of self discovery and mending their marriage
This was a romantic story that follows Charlotte and Bryan, who have been separated for six months due to disagreements. However, Brian asks Charlotte to act as a normal couple for Christmas when they visit Brian's family. The story is heart-warming and starts off really well. I found the latter third of the book to drag along a bit and found it less engaging. Overall, a good read. I received a free copy of the book and this is my voluntary and honest review.
The Ex Agreement is a great book but I wasn't pre-pared for the amount of sex in it. Don't get me wrong it was in all the right places but for me was too much the central part of the book rather than the Christmas season that it was suppose to be. Yes Christmas was very much part of the book but for me the sex scenes took over. I like a seasonal book to be just that a seasonal book centred around the season not just a part of it.
Another very easy 5 star read for me ❤️ Very easy to read, and as a mummy of a son with suspected autism, I found lots of this story very relatable, and I well and truly got sucked in, and had a few tears too. I enjoyed Regina Brownell's the Two Week Wait that introduced us to the characters, and I thoroughly enjoyed it, but enjoyed this one just as much. I think this book could easily be read as a standalone too. Great read.
Much like Charlotte Holmes, I too love the Jonas Brothers 😂
Ugh, I’m a sucker for a good second chance romance story! This book had me feeling ALL of the emotions. I cried and I laughed. Both Bryan and Charlotte had amazing character development through the book and the way they were written was absolutely perfect!
This is a super cute Christmas time read, however, it could be read at anytime!
A “second” book but totally fine and enjoyable read even as a “first”! A interesting take on probably a more than you know “situation” that was well-written, believable and realistic. The characters and their conundrum were very relatable and the story unfolded with just the right build to bring an emotional attachment to the story and the characters!
Thanks Bloodhound Books for my EARC and and entertaining read branching out from my usual genre!
This was such a sweet story. And honestly I usually avoid books that deal with marriages falling apart, even if it’s a HEA, but I pushed through this one and I’m glad I did. I thought more emphasis was placed on the bad feelings as opposed to them trying to make the marriage work and communicate, but overall this was worth the read and very much makes me want to hug my hubby.
I loved The Two Week Promise and was so excited to read this book! I am a sucker for happy endings and like to believe that is how book couples will be forever but it doesn’t always end that way and I loved the story here between Bryan and Charlotte and how important communication is in a relationship. I couldn’t put it down and finished it in a day!
