Fate Unraveled #1

Forcing Fate

Rate this book
Perfect for lovers of Fourth Wing and Eragon, this slow-burn, enemies-to-lovers fantasy romance will keep you on the edge of your seat! The angst and tension in this book may cause sleep deprivation.

“You never have to force anything that’s meant to be.” But some things are worth fighting for. Avyanna trained her whole life to be a Dragon Rider. A Rider who is needed to stop the invasion of Shadows. On Hatching Day, the worst happens. She is left with a choice. Will she manage to follow in her father’s footsteps—on the war front, or will she live her life in the shadow of what should have been? General Rafe ShadowSlayer is on an involuntary hiatus, sent back to the homelands to train troops. When Avyanna tries to force her Fate, he could be exactly what she needs… or be the one to send her packing. Will he help her reach her destiny or will they both find something more? Sometimes Fate doesn’t tell you, no. Sometimes Fate simply tells you, wait.
Forcing Fate is a book that tells the story of Avyanna as she grows to a young woman. There are dark and gritty themes and steamy scenes. Gender stereotypes are broken. Lines are crossed. Secrets are revealed. Buckle up, here there be dragons.

If you're into Fourth Wing/Iron Flame, you'd 100% be into this one. Overall, this was such a wild ride to read. The first 20% seemed a bit "wordy". However, once I pushed through, it truly became so interesting. I loved the two main characters. The FMC is so brave, wise and eager. I loved her determination. The MMC is meant to be unlikable but I truly ended up liking him after everything. The ending left me at a cliffhanger and now I am so excited to read the following book. I also loved the MMC's pov bonus chapters. Excited to see how book #2 plays out!!

It's not a perfect book. It had a slow start, and it took me some time to become fully invested. However, I really loved this fantasy romance. This was well-written. I thought the characters were also well developed even though we don't know everything about Rafe yet. I loved the slow-burn romance, the likable female main character who we actually see become slowly more badass on page, and the dragon aspect. I also love how possessive Rafe is despite his refusal for them to be together. Their sweet little solstice gift swap followed by them having to share the room at the inn had my heart going *pitter-patter*. I loved how Vy was the first female soldier ever after everything else she's been through. I also freaking loved Wilhelm as her friend.

I'm so excited for book 2 because it seems like dragons are about to be more involved in the story.

Note for readers - there are a ton of triggers in this book so be mindful before picking this up. There are multiple attempted rapes of the female main character throughout this book and the society in this world is not great for women. It's a bit of a medieval vibe where women are super oppressed.

Definitely had Fourth Wing vibes and I enjoyed every minute of it! Avyanna goes through so much, honestly felt like I was going through it with her. My first time reading this author but will not be my last!

I received this ARC for an honest review, all thoughts/opinions above are my own!

What a phenomenal fantasy! Vy and Rafe has such an interesting, incredible, and twisted. Vy has had one dream and when her dreams don’t come true she chooses another path that will change her life forever. The ending has me stunned and in shock, and wanting more!

(ARC REVIEW) This was a killer Debut novel. I’m looking forward to seeing where this goes. This is very deep fantasy and world building so I wouldn’t throw it at someone at this point who isn’t a heavy fantasy reader. Lots of details, Vivid word descriptions all normal things for entering a new world. But I feel like I could loose a non fantasy reader.

This book is very fade to black slow burn and not “romancy” I do foresee this picking up in later books!

This book has lots of character development as the female main character faces trials. With lots of mental and physical training which is what most of this book contains!

I will be looking forward to seeing where this world goes because THAT CLIFFHANGER!

(I received an arc for an honest review) Wow, what can I say, this book has given me a massive book hangover. It is indeed reminiscent of fourth wing, and if you loved fourth wing I’d strongly recommend this book. It was a breath of fresh air reading this, it’s been so long since a book made me feel this way. The FMC is allllllll about dragons it’s her lifeblood it’s what she lives and breathes. And when she has to venture to other ways of living she learns there’s more to life than just dragons. I love her, her growth over the book is amazing. Now on to the MMC ugh rafe I love him. He screams you touch her and you die (literally). It is enemies to lovers and slow burn. But the absolute best part of this book was the ending, a cliffhanger that made me question why do I read books before the entire series is done. It’s brutal to wait. I can’t say much more because of spoilers so all I’ll say is as a debut novel this book is stunning, it’s everything and so much more. I’m so grateful I got to read this book. I will be rereading again shortly, probably right away :)

These were the notes I wrote last night when I finished this book:

I don’t even have words to describe this book and what it’s done to me.

I’m sat here streaming with tears because it’s over. I’m not sure I’ve ever felt this way about a book.

I want to read this again and again, I want this to be adapted on tv, this book is potentially going to become my entire personality. This book is the hill I will die on and it you don’t like it I will not hear a bad word about it.
I cannot believe this isn’t a traditionally published book because the calibre is definitely there.

I highly highly recommend this as a fantasy read with an incredible slow burn. I’m honestly speechless. I literally slapped my own face and dragged my palm down my face in a tropey way when this ended. I fell right off that cliff into an abyss of pain only to wait for the next instalment.

Excuse me while I gather myself and consider how I can read another book.

Update: I’m ok! After literally lying awake trying to process this book, I have accepted my fate of waiting for the next one 😂

ARC REVIEW - I was given an arc of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Wonderful world building, great characters and I enjoyed the pace of the book.

Very much looking forward to book 2!

Oh man such a cool book! Should you read it- absolutely! If you are looking for a Fourth Wing vibe THIS IS YOUR BOOK!

Now lets dive in- FMC lord have mercy this girl is dragged through the mud and then dragged through it a little more. The author writes her as a strong female- determined, scrappy, and easy to immerse into. She NEVER falters in her character building of her. She never “forgets” she is strong.

The MMC is AMAZING. Brutal, intense, dangerous even…but has so many secrets and haunts to him. He always remains true to his purpose and conviction of being a soldier and protector in his own way.

Now on to the story plot. The book takes place in a medieval sort of mind set women and men are not equal. War, DRAGONS, magic. There is really only 2 paths: path of a dragon chosen or a soldier. Those who don’t bond- fight on the ground in the front lines against the sorta mysterious enemy.

The Dragons- this was a little be of a downer as the dragons don’t really play a huge roll in this book. They are there but kinda in the background. I think book 2 will likely be more dragon themed based off the cliffhanger!! So if you are wanting an immediate dragon connection - you won’t have that. The author is DEFINITELY setting us up for this to happen in the next books.

World Building- much of the book is world building. GREAT WORLD building. Characters, secrets, alliances are all being laid out in-front of us to propel into the next book. I felt like this book was prepping me for the real story to begin. So book 2 can’t come soon enough.

Spice: if you are looking for 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️ this is not the book. This is 100% a slow burn. So prepare yourself for that. Again the author is setting us up for the fall to come! She is definitely going to get there - when idk but I hope it’s book 2!!

I’m purposefully not giving spoilers away! It’s definitely worth the read - prep yourself for the impending hangover! Happy Reading!

** ARC review **

Wow, for a debut novel this book kept me on my toes and on the edge of my seat. I pushed aside all responsibilities for a day because I could not put it down. Absolutely phenomenal and I am hanging on for the next instalment.

The story is a beautifully written reflection on modern issues that many people have faced in their lives: dreams not panning out, challenging societal norms, proving one’s worth and sheer determination to make something of yourself. Obviously with a hint of magic, and dragons.
There is a rich fantasy world, one that is built bit by bit throughout the book, something new fantasy readers or romantasy readers may struggle with. Though this is very much needed for an epic fantasy series, so you know this knowledge is worth it in the end.
FMC is not the typical heroine that excels in everything she does and that is a sincere breath of fresh air. You go along the journey of self discovery and self discipline with her, feeling her fails and triumphs. MMC is a brute shrouded in mystery right to the very end, but you see the softer side of him that makes you want to know more. The suspense between MC’s is palpable throughout, you find yourself cheering them on then cringing away at the embarrassment or rejection. It’s fantastic.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is a fan of deep fantasy worlds, as it has something to appeal to most. Readers beware though, it ends on a mighty cliffhanger that, I personally, was not ready for. You will sit and stare into oblivion once you realise you must wait to find out the results, and the book hangover sets in.
Now go forth and enjoy!

• ARC REVIEW •

This is a debut novel and is the first of a trilogy. As with most fantasy books, especially series there is so much time devoted to world building and backstory. That being said, this book is definitely for avid fantasy readers. I would not recommend this book to someone who is just starting dipping their toes into the fantasy genre or for someone who doesn’t read fantasy. I think they would struggle to read this book given the amount of time spent on backstory.

Yes, there are dragons in this book. However, they are a very minor part of this book. The bulk of this book is about the FMC and her coming to terms with her life plans not going accordingly. She has to adapt and accept that her life is on a different path. She had big life goals and wanted to change the world. Now she’s adapting to her new life. With this change comes new challenges and a lot of training. This is a strong start to a trilogy. This is a VERY slow burn, fade to black, enemies to lovers fantasy book. This book is classified at high fantasy, which I wouldn’t agree with based on this book alone. But I do anticipate that to change with how book 1 ended. This is a solid start to a series I’m excited to see where this it goes and anticipate a lot more action packed scenes and high stakes moments in book 2.

I honestly could not put this book down.

It’s the perfect fantasy romance if you like the slow burn trope…like…super slow burn, but that just makes you so much more excited to see how the relationship between the main characters plays out. The FMC was very well written and grew with the story. It seems like almost every female in a fantasy novel is ridiculously good at everything immediately but our Avyanna goes through struggles and fails quite often which makes her super relatable. I also enjoyed how the MMC was written. Rafe was the perfect amount of grumpy/possessive/supportive. The world building was amazing and I felt so pulled into the story that when our main characters were experiencing something, I could ‘experience’ it with them.

This book does end on a cliffhanger that will make you extremely impatient for book two!

This will be my first official DNF but I can tell I don't need to finish to know I don't like it.

I don't know where to start but I suppose we can begin with our FMC. Avyanna is a 17 year old girl who has no friends and studies a lot. Despite this, she fails at getting a dragon. I suspect this is because they would also want to throw her off a cliff for complaining constantly that she is not a child, or whining about how everyone around her is so immature (I guess that's how she ends up getting groomed by the MMC but I'll get to that later). Avy is then given a second chance by the masters of the school to spend another year as a "first chosen" (someone who can get picked as a dragon rider) who will also be helping out the masters as part of her agreement at a second chance. Despite her treating the masters with upmost respect, when forced into the army training camp, she treats the generals and captains with absolutely zero, mouthing off and ignoring them, or just plain arguing back.

Then we get to the army where world building makes absolutely no sense. The army is divided into the infantry and then the dragon riders. They both train for 4 years before being shipped off to the front where basically no one survives and essentially is a conveyer belt to slaughter. They all know this and yet are eager to join the army, and even though the school knows who will be going to war, they refuse to train any of them in anything until they graduate or something. Avy is the youngest in her class at 16 to be "first chosen" and is along side people at least 19 years old so the duration of school is confusing. Once they get their dragon, or they don't and end up in the army, they get on the certain death train and more students take their place to be killed next. The part I struggle with, is they all know at some point they will end up fighting and yet they do not have any weapons or combat training until they go through the process of being chosen or not. Obviously this is a shit strategy if they all keep dying but no one seems to care or maybe suggest that they start training at a younger age, but what do I know, I am not a general. I guess her being 17 and "never holding anything more dangerous than a butter knife" makes for great soldiers....except it doesn't cuz they all die.

Then we get to the gender roles which are more muddled with every sentence of this story. The general tells her that women don't know shit about battle, but there are dragon riders. They tell us all dragons are too valuable to leave behind and all of them go to the front, ergo, there are obviously women in battle, yet every single person is horrified to have her around the soldiers. Make it make sense!

We finally get to the main reason I am not interested in finishing the book and that is our MMC. I get age gaps even though it's never been my thing, but this book makes it extremely creepy seeing as she is a minor. Avy meets our MMC Rafe who is the grumpy general who hates having her around because she is a literal child. She recognizes his name as someone who was serving with her father in the army, but here's the thing, he died like 15 years ago. So by that math, Rafe would legit have to be twice her age. When she meets him the author describes him as a huge muscular man, where her head barely reaches his chest(how original) with a "muscular waist she couldn't even wrap her arms around". Like do you have any idea how seriously ridiculous he would have to be shaped for a grown human not to be able to put their arms around his waist? Outrageous, simply outrageous. Once I could see this was going to be the main love pairing I was out. It is so creepy and gross that Rafe would see her as a potential mate after constantly calling her a child. I am not into predators so I will be skipping this one for sure.

From illogical world building to sub par prose, this book is just not worth your time.

To say I loved the book would be an understatement. I COULD NOT PUT IT DOWN for the life of me. I adored it, flew right through all the pages. The plot was amazing and I adored the theme but the romance was IMPECCABLE, the angst, the steam, their cute stolen moments, everything about them screamed perfection, a truly well-done enemies to lovers trope. (if u can, show me one person that didn't fall for Rafe which I don't think exists and until then I don't believe anyone could not love him). I simply can't wait for the next one.
Ps. the cliffhanger KILLED me. Simple as that.

I absolutely flew though this book!! I felt all Avyanna's ups, downs, struggles, and disappointments💯 Everytime life knocked her down she got right back up more determined than ever & fought tooth and nail to find her place in the world. And Rafe?? There's definitely more to the General than meets the eye👁(no pun intended)🤣

The ending had me on the edge of my seat gasping completely Shook!!!! I NEED TO KNOW MORE I was NOT ready for it to be over AT ALL!!

Deserves every star! Give your indie authors a chance. I’m mad I waited so long to start this. Once I got through the first few chapters , it hooked me in. Gives me Fourth Wing/Mulan vibes! Love the characters. Need me some more Rafe. If your into slow burns, this one is going to do me me in. I almost can’t handle the tension. Can’t wait to start the second book!!!

If you liked Fourth Wing or Eragon, you will love this book!! I thought it was very eloquently written and there were so many twists and turns. Of course I love my books with some enemies to lovers and it delivered!
.
Another thing I love to see in books I read are strong character arcs and the ones in Forcing Fate were beautiful. Avyanna really came into her own and it made me so proud 🥹. I’m SO excited to jump into Following Fate. It’s an ARC read so you have to wait until Feb 29th to find out what happens after that HUMONGOUS cliff hanger! Don’t worry, I believe in you!! The wait will be worth it!!

Who doesn’t love enemies to loves and a slow burn? I really enjoyed Forcing Fate, especially as an author’s debut novel. Avyanna’s constant thinking of “I will have a dragon” or “when I get my dragon” bothered me a little at the beginning, just because it made her seem so close-minded. As the story unfolded and she had to shift her plans, I feel like she noted how close-minded she had been and I enjoyed seeing her growth. No matter how many times she failed or was attacked, she’d get back up and keep going, putting 100% into all tasks.

And I certainly can’t wait for the sequel, especially with the cliffhanger we’re left on!

If you’re in the mood for a slow burn, enemies to lovers (but with no spice, although I feel it may come in future books), and a world centered around dragons, I highly recommend giving this book a shot.

I am grateful to have been given an ARC copy and this is my honest review.

I had really high hopes for this but I absolutely cannot get past the fact the love interest is one of the FMCs teachers & that he also knew/worked with her father. He grooms her throughout the story, eventually recruiting her for his special squad, and also stands by for a bit before deciding to intervene when she is drugged and almost gang raped? What??

In addition to that, the events of the story were pretty slow to get going. The last chapter was the most exciting, everything in-between the first few chapters and that could have been drastically condensed or we could have gotten some more world building at least. I don't want to say it could have been an email, but..... We don't even know who/what we're fighting against, in this big great war that has been mentioned since the first chapter until we're 2/3 of the way through the book.

I will still read the 2nd book because I hate dnf'ing series, and I definitely didn't trudge through that first book for nothing.

I absolutely could not put this down and finished it in one day. The world is written well and the characters develop nicely in the story so it makes sense. I even asked the author when the next will be out is how much I loved this story.
I loved watching Avyanna grow into a young woman and cried for on her heartbreak.
Wilhelm makes my heart smile in the way he cares for Avyanna and how their friendship grows.
General Rafe is just well....he is General Rafe and I can't wait to see how he moves into the budding relationship and how he evolves.
Full disclosure: I was given this as an advance copy in exchange for my honest review.

This is my honest review for Forcing Fate by M.A Frick. I got the honor of receiving an ARC of this debut novel. This will be the first in a trilogy.

This book did have some trigger warnings to include attempted S*xual abuse , foul language, depression, mention of un-aliving and of course violence, death, blood and injury.

I could not put this book down, from the very start I was hooked into the story and needed to know what was going to happen next. The FMC (Avyanna) is pretty unique from other fantasy books, she doesn’t really care about finding love. So this was definitely not a romance novel but focused more on growth of characters and action. Not to say there is no romance but what there was, it was perfect. Stolen moments , angst and a super slow enemies to lovers? Maybe vibe. This wasn’t a book with spice but I could see further books becoming spicy.

Was there dragons? Yes. Was I expecting more dragons? Yes. Was I disappointed? Not at all. This story threw me through so many loops. Every time something happened and Avyanna was kicked to the ground she got up and changed her tactics, every time I didn’t see her next plan coming. Her life goal did not come through so she decided to become something that’s never been before! This book has so much character growth , mentally, emotionally and physically. Avyanna might be my favorite female fantasy character to date.

The ‘love’ interest also threw me through a flaming hoop, I really thought it was going to be one person but it wasn’t. The person who she admires was not what I expected!

The side character’s were so fun! Avyanna is a loner but she makes friends that become family. I love the found family trope 💜

This book ended in the most frustrating way with the biggest cliff hanger! How can Frick just drop an ending like that and make us wait?! This might be the author’s first book but she’s playing dirty! Frick you, Frick 😂

Loved the premise - vibes were GI Jane meets Fourth Wing. Overall I thought it was really good but my excitement got tamped down a touch.

It started off a little slow and info dumpy, then got VERY good, then got slow again, then ended on a very quick scene I didn’t know what to make of.

Fair warning that most of the book is her training. I wish they moved on from it a bit earlier so we got more of the Tennen - because it felt kind of rushed and not as connected to those characters.

It’s odd that most of the characters that are well developed in the beginning you start to really like, but then are not really in the book at the end, so that was a little confusing as well.

Most notable for me about our FMC, Avyanna, is the dramatic changing of her personality in the second half. This girl was so asexual at the beginning and concern for impropriety was through the roof. Then when she admits she has feelings for General, she all the sudden is all over him every scene. It felt almost too much, especially when the man was threatening to rip your tongue out and throw you off cliffs at the start!

The slow burn is slow, but was also giving me whiplash. I still loved the tension between them.

The second book seems like it delves more into the dragon aspects as they were almost missing entirely from the middle of the book.

I’m cautiously optimistic for the next one here.

- Edit: unfortunately couldn’t even make it to half way point of book two so lowering my rating and wouldn’t recommend continuing.

When I was given an ARC of Forcing Fate by indie author M.A. Frick - Writer, I really didn’t expect to find myself a new auto-buy author. But oh my goodness, have I ever! This NA fantasy romance is exactly what I’ve been searching for, with my favourite trope of enemies to lovers at the heart of the story. So let’s give you an overview!

Avyanna has longed to be a Dragon Rider ever since she could remember, forgoing any other bond in her quest to forge one with a dragon on Hatching Day. But when this dream turns to dust, Avyanna’s must change tactics as she seeks to become a warrior on the war front. Forced to interact with the returned General Rafe Shadow Slayer, Avyanna is determined to prove herself amongst the troops he’s training. But what happens when Rafe pushes her beyond her limits? What secrets are they both hiding, from each other & the world? And can Avyanna force fate to change its path?

I don’t ask for much, just morally grey men… And a fiery heroine who doesn’t know when to quit. Does Forcing Fate deliver? You bet it does! Hold onto something when you read this fantasy romance, dear bookworms. Because these characters are going to take you on one of the most frantic & heart-pounding adventures you’ve ever been on! With Avyanna believing she’s broken & Rafe hiding a secret which could change *everything*, this duo’s fight for a better world is truly epic.

Forcing Fate by indie author M. A. Frick is a fantasy romance brimming with dragons, darkness & a love which could burn the whole world down…

This book is truly magical! I hate that it’s ending is a cliff hanger however it was done in a way that’s not making me super upset but still definitely ready for the next book! I loved Willhelms - and the Masters relationship with her though the book protecting her and the found family at the end. The author will have you so invested I was actually feeling things as if I was there. (Sad-angry-nervous-excited- just all the feels!) it’s definitely an agonizingly slow burn between the MMC & FMC had me all giddy like a school girl by the end to some of there banter. And honestly it was a refreshing fantasy romance in the sense of the love interest not to be a instant connection or attraction from both sides that was obvious. It was borderline bully to romance in the best way. I love the way the FMC has really grown and became a BA in her own right in the “man’s world”

I’m blown away with how this story was written and it would really make for a fantastic movie (as I was reading I could visualize it in my head so easily as if I was watching one!) I loved the bonus pov at the end only making me wish more from him through out the book! There was a perfect amount of action through this story that keeps you hooked and never guessing what will happen next. I can’t express enough how much I really enjoyed this book! It’s a great fantasy. It definitely got me out of my book hangover! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND! And I can’t wait to see what will be in the future for the characters! ❤️ Thank you for the chance of this ARC read and I look forward to see what other gems you come up with!

What to expect from this book in 3 words: DETERMINATION-- PERSISTENCE -- COURAGE

I was delighted by fourth wing (also with a hang over) and wanted to read something similar, so I came across forcing fate... it was soo good!! You have a slow burn romance, and when you think something is going to happen blush! Everything changes... (like in the real word)... and you have the option to adapt or retrace your steps... I'd like to introduce this book through 5 quotes that captivated me:

"Determination flooded my veins
I was stronger than this, better than this."

"Women just never had the desire or courage to pursue tasks that were deemed for men."

"Yesterday is past, tomorrow is unknown, and today—you live"

"you are intimidating.” I offered him a small smile in my defense. “I aim to be.”

"Accept that. Accept your limitations, and move on"

So you want a book that makes you want to devour it? Do you want to get hooked on a slow burn romance? Do you want something that takes you out of your comfort zone and encourages you to try harder like Avyanna?...and of course, do you like dragons? ...this book is DEFINITELY for you.

Read it, you will love it.

(I just can't wait for the next book!!!)

PS Evey chapter has great draws and I love them too!!

I received an ARC in return for an honest review. This was amazing, I loved everything about it. The entire plot, the banter between Rafe and Avyanna, the quotes. “Your life is not your own Avyanna. You are not an island”. As someone who questions daily if they’re on the right path and making the right choices it was a stark reminder I needed to remember I am not an island. Overall I loved this book and cannot wait for the next one.

Crack!

Forcing Fate has proven to be an excellent debute novel for this new indie author. Pacing is very reminiscent of Eragon. This is only the beginning of our heroines journey, and in it, we see her struggles and feel her heartache. For every defeat, she gets back on her feet and tries again. I love the hard-hitting truths in this story and the reminder to never quit, to never let yourself be defeated.

Our FMC faces shattered dreams, uncertain paths, and vile threats. Will it all be worth it in the end? I can't wait to find out! Bring on Book 2!

I signed up to Arc read as the author sold it to be similar to Fourth Wing.
I am not disappointed it was an amazing read. I could not put it down and sad I'm finished.
I would say it has similarities to Fourth Wing, but not the same kind of read.

This book offers all the good things Dragons, Magic, War, War School, Lust and Banter
It is an action-packed story that keeps you needing to know what will happen next.

The FMC is a determened and brave character, but what I love most is that she has flaws and that she fails and grows so much. She was written in a way that you feel everything with her all the emotions. She is relatable

I can not wait for the rest of the series to come out
