A brand new spicy STEM romcom for fans of Ali Hazelwood and Tessa Bailey!

When a mishap with a pain au chocolat ruins the most important presentation of Dr Clara Clancy’s career, the last person she expects to come to her rescue is the impossibly good-looking and all-round super-nice guy from her university days, Dr Henry Fraser.

Back during their time together at Oxford, Clara was seemingly the only person immune to The Hot Henry Effect – a genuine scientific phenomenon whereby those around Henry fall instantly and helplessly in love with him, the outcomes of which he has remained entirely oblivious to.

Now, reunited and back working together, it’s not long before they slip back into their easy friendship. But both Henry and Clara are keeping secrets – if they can’t be honest with themselves, what hope is there of them being honest with each other? And will Clara really be able to resist the Hot Henry Effect for long?

Don't read this if you're looking for a quick read that won't give you a headache.🫶🏼

They were happy at 75%, so the book could easily have finished there, but no, the author wanted to add some unnecessary drama that caused me a headache, so thanks for that.💞

ᴄʜᴀʀᴀᴄᴛᴇʀꜱ:

The amount of time I completely forgot that both MCS were doctors and not high school students is insane!! They didn’t really act like 25+ year old adults, and the choices they made (especially Clara, the FMC) were so childish and stupid.😣✋🏼
There’s literally no way that she graduated from Oxford. She’s definitely not on my favorite FMC list, that’s for sure. She was in no way relatable and too insecure for me. The number of times I needed to read the quotes "he’s way out of my league“ or "he deserves someone better.“ is unbelievable.🫤

Henry was meh and cute at the same time, but again, I really couldn’t picture him as a 25+ year old adult with a doctor title!! Let’s not forget the number of times he said stuff like, "I’ll kill him." I always cringe reading this quote when a MMC that is not in a mafia or gang says that. You literally wear Superman boxers, so calm down, Harry.🤗

“I love you with all my heart, no matter how damaged it may be. I want to spend the rest of forever trying to be enough for you, trying to make you as happy as possible. All I ask is that you continue to be you. Because, I have finally realised, it’s always been you.”

This book was a really fun, easy read for me! It made me laugh on multiple occasions, and didn’t feel like it was trying too hard to be funny while using modern references. If you’re into STEM romance, and Ali Hazelwood-esque type of books then this book is definitely for you.

The Hot Henry Effect is a second chance, friends to lovers romance. Henry was an engineering PHD student that Clara had been asked to take under her wing during the time she was conducting experiments for her own PHD thesis. Henry was enamored with Clara, who was oblivious and put him in the friend zone. After they went their separate ways, they get a chance to reconnect when their work brings them together yet again. But the question is, will this time be any different?

Clara’s character was so real and relatable. She was so self-deprecating and always tried to turn to humor to cope with her trauma and uncomfortable feelings to the point where you wanted to shake her. She was a perfect portrayal of how our defense mechanisms can get in the way of the good and the bad in your life. I did feel as though Henry’s character was a little surface level though. Even at the end of the book, it felt like the only “personal” things I knew about him were that he was hot and an engineer.

There’s only one open-door spicy scene in the book. It wasn’t life changing, but also wasn’t terrible. The only thing that really made me cringe inwardly was the word “squelching” being used multiple times.

Tropes
➝ Slow burn
➝ He falls first
➝ Second chance

The Hot Henry Effect by Lucy Chalice is a charming romance with a sprinkle of nostalgia. The premise of Clara's mishap and Henry's unexpected rescue sets the stage for a delightful journey. The dynamics between Clara and Henry, infused with their shared history at Oxford, create a warm and inviting atmosphere.

The supporting characters, particularly Clara's friends, inject additional levity into the narrative, making the story more vibrant. However, I found myself wishing for deeper exploration of the main characters' backgrounds. While their reunion after seven years is a central theme, it felt like their personal growth during this time was overlooked, leaving their development somewhat stagnant.

Henry's character shines brightly throughout the book. His intelligence, charm, and unwavering support for Clara make him a standout protagonist. Unfortunately, Clara's characterization fell short for me. Her sarcasm often bordered on rudeness, making it difficult to fully connect with her.

Additionally, while the story is cute and enjoyable overall, it occasionally feels weighed down by excessive pop-culture references. Furthermore, the inclusion of a subplot involving sensitive subject matter, without much contribution to the main storyline, felt unnecessary.

The Hot Henry Effect is a cute read with its fair share of ups and downs. If you're in the mood for a light-hearted romance with a dash of nostalgia, it's worth checking out for fans of contemporary romance.

ੈ♡˳ rating: four of five stars

ੈ♡˳ summary: the hot henry effect by lucy chalice follows dr. clara clancy, a neurodivergent scientist who’s more comfortable in lab coats and logic than in messy emotions. after a humiliating professional mishap, she finds herself unexpectedly teamed up with none other than dr. henry fraser—aka the man with the unfortunate nickname “hot henry,” who everyone seems to swoon over. as they work together on a new project, sparks begin to fly, and clara is forced to decide if she’s brave enough to let someone in… even if he’s objectively perfect and annoyingly charming.

ੈ♡˳ thoughts: this book was really good. i went into it expecting a super steamy romance based on how it was marketed—and while it did have some spice, i don’t know if i’d call it steamy. like yes, there was one explicit scene and it was good, but that was basically it. so if you’re picking this up looking for constant heat, manage your expectations.

that said… henry. he falls first is one of my absolute favorite tropes and he delivered in every way. he was attentive, patient, lowkey obsessed with clara from the jump, and just an all-around solid book boyfriend. their dynamic was sweet and funny, and i loved how much care lucy chalice put into writing clara as a neurodivergent lead. her inner world was layered and thoughtful, and their banter was some of my favorite in a romance this year.

the book had some slower pacing moments, and it did rely on a few familiar tropes, but that didn’t take away from how enjoyable it was. i also really liked the science backdrop—it was refreshing to read a romance where the heroine is killing it in a stem field (even if she doesn’t always feel like it).

this was a strong debut and i’m really excited to see what lucy chalice does next. the balance of warmth, wit, and character depth was so well done.

ੈ♡˳ tropes:
ꕥ he falls first
ꕥ grumpy x sunshine
ꕥ women in STEM
ꕥ forced proximity
ꕥ workplace romance

ੈ♡˳ fave quotes:
➼ “being with you is the easiest thing in the world. it feels like breathing.”
➼ “there’s nothing wrong with you, clara. you just think differently. and that’s one of the things i like most about you.”
➼ “you don’t need to be more like anyone else. you just need to be you.”

If you love women in STEM with a slow build romance where he falls first then this book will be just the ticket for you. This book had me giggling and smiling and rooting for Henry and Clara. After a while I did find myself getting frustrated with Clara but I knew the slow burn would be worth the wait. I will say this is definitely on the low end for spice, but it is balanced well with the plot. The post it notes were the icing on the cake for me.

This was a wonderful new STEM romance that was everything I hoped it would be.

"Just know that you are enough, exactly as you are."

What to expect:
- STEM Romance
- Friends to lover
- Unrequited Love
- Didn't know one another liked each other
- Second Chance
- Workplace
- Stalker
- Miscommunication Trope
- Daddy Issues

Clara and Henry use to know each other back in their day's at Oxford. However, after 7 years they lost touch and now they are back working together.

You can definitely see that Lucy Chalice has a thing for Henry Cavill (Not that we can blame her, who doesn't) - The mention of superman/ Clark Kent, highlander, even the cover I can see resemblance and not forgetting the lead man is called Henry.

I liked the idea behind the story and It was easy to read. I would have liked to have had more information between the two from past and present to see why they didn't stay in contact? Clara why didn't you get any therapy? especially with where she worked you would think they would encourage her to go and speak to someone. Mentally health is important. I wouldn't have minded Henry P.o.v. as well.

I didn't like was the description of the characters they felt underdeveloped and they felt a lot younger than they were meant to be. I felt that the chemistry that was building up between the two as soon as Henry finally said how he real felt kind of disappeared. Clara also had too many insecurities. I can understand having some insecurities as everyone has them, but we don't need constantly reminding of them.

I would have been quite happy without the miscommunication trope but that is personal preference as it is my least favourite trope- most of the time all the characters need to do is is to act like an adult and actually talk to each other.

This is on Netgalley side- if a book is marked as Erotica I was expecting a lot more than I was given and definitely spicer. It was quite moderate to say the least.

Again must express this is my own opinion and you should each make your own decision on whether you like a book or not.

Thank you Netgalley for a copy of the book for an honest review.

I wanted to love this book.

I actually did until 80% of the way through.
I loved the banter between Clara and Henry.

But Clara’s trauma and fears of being left was actually annoying to read. Like haven’t we heard of communicating instead of making assumptions?

*I’d like to thank NetGalley, One More Chapter and Lucy Chalice for providing me with a free ARC in exchange for an honest review.

“The Hot Henry Effect” by Lucy Chalice tells the story of Clara and Henry. Clara met “Hot Henry” during grad school when he was assigned to her as an assistant. At that time it seemed Clara was the only student on campus immune to “The Hot Henry Effect” which causes people to swoon and hyperventilate whenever Henry is near. Her immunity resulted in a friendship with the popular guy who after eight months returned to the States and their connection went cold. Seven years later, they met again. A project throws them together again and as they work together their friendship rekindles. But things are different this time around. Clara doesn’t seem to be immune to “The Hot Henry Effect” anymore and suddenly it appears that Henry never was immune to her charms either…

First, let’s talk about characters. The main character of the story is Clara. The story is only told from her POV and as a reader we don’t get any glimpses into Henry’s head. For the first half of the story I kinda liked Clara. She’s a bit too immature for 32 years though, but still appeared to be kind and funny. But around the second half when it is revealed why Clara isn’t dating or her love life being dormant, I kinda started to dislike her. Perhaps her daddy and abandonment issues were simply written badly, but it felt so sudden to be confronted with her past which didn’t seem convincing to me as a reader and well fleshed out in context of the whole story. It was as if the author desperately needed a reason why Clara didn’t want to be with Henry and just randomly chose one. Suddenly, Clara became that whiney woman that didn’t believe in therapy (though, she desperately should have talked to a therapist) and the back and forth between her and Henry began. I wanted to like her through her struggle, but I just couldn’t. She became insufferable and her weird attempt to win Henry back was simply put cringey. Honestly, Clara showed clear signs of some b-cluster personality disorder or something.

Her relationship with Henry was weird. I liked their friendship: the teasing, the thoughtfulness and the honest conversations. I thought these would translate beautifully into a romance, but somehow they didn’t. The moment Henry confessed, their entire chemistry went down the drain. Of course, it was obvious that he liked her more than a friend, but when Clara became aware their entire dynamic shifted drastically and became almost toxic. Like Henry tried to set a boundary (good for him; though it didn’t make a 100 % sense) and then Clara did something utterly ridiculous and he was like “yeah, forget about my wants and needs, she gifted me a stack of post-its”. I did not like it. He constantly ran after her, and Clara never had to actively work on her issues or return genuine affection to him in any shape. Like the moment they got together, not even 24 h later, she wanted to break up again…she didn’t even consider having a conversation about the information she received or verify it, she just blindly ran with it and Henry was totally cool with it. Like dude! Have some self-respect! And before I finished off this point, Clara needed therapy not a boyfriend. This relationship will fix nothing for her, if she doesn’t get professional help. The way she behaved and coped with the situation wasn’t healthy at all!

Secondly, the entire tone of the book was off. It started off very light-hearted and a bit goofy. I was here for it. And then suddenly, there was stalking, an assault, childhood trauma, a failed marriage and the drama just didn’t stop. And weirdly enough, the light-hearted tone was badly pushed through these heavy topics. I have read novels who managed to be light-hearted and discuss heavy topics. But not this one. This one failed at the attempt and the entire thing just seemed off.

Thirdly, I did not like the pacing of the story. The first half was so slow, like nothing happened except them hanging out and drinking coffee. And then with the assault one dramatic thing after the other happens, and the story got rockier and rockier. I wished an editor would have looked all over this and said “The idea is great, but the line up and focus needs to be washed out more, because it’s drowning in plotting clutter.” No plotline is fully developed, no plotline is actually followed through the end which makes the entire book appear unfinished and very frustrating to read.

So, overall a great idea, with fun characters and potential to be great, but sadly failed in its execution.

Thank you so much to the author, publisher and NetGalley for the free copy provided in exchange for an honest review! (I guess ?)

okay well, to put it plainly this sucked. I don't know how it turned out as bad as it was, but good lord,
Issue number one: Clara our main character. When I see reviews that are complaining about the main female lead I usually just equate it to internalized misogyny. But this time I believe any slander on the character is understandable. Clara was at first quirky, then quickly descended into being immature and poorly written. We got a dump of information within the first chapter which read more as a character summary than an introduction to a book. She has supposed daddy issues, however we never got any flashbacks or a proper look into this past that has traumatized her so badly. She mostly came off as whinny but then quickly reaffirmed that she doesn't need therapy because she doesn't want to pay to talk to someone and she already knows what her issues are. Maybe it's because I'm studying to be a psychologist but this was very irritating considering she is a scientist, and it seemed slightly unrealistic that she would have such closed off views to therapy.
Issue number two: None of the relationships seen began on-screen. There was no build up, this book felt like it began in the middle of the story and not the start. I didn't have any faith in any of the friendships or romantic relationships because I was just told how they developed instead of shown. This was also a constant issue with other parts of the book, Henry having a failed marriage that came out of no where? An assault/ stalking case that wasn't really treated with the care that it needs? The childhood trauma, briefly saying someone has abandonment issues does not count for actual back story people!
Issue number three: dialogue and writing style. I don't have much to say other than it sucked, there was not much flow. I struggled to get through this book it was exhausting to get through each chapter. It was also much longer than it needed to be.
I was really excited for this book the premise sounded promising and I'm a massive fan of all of Ali Hazelwoods works and thought this may be similar, but I was extremely disappointed with how this was executed.

Somewhere in the printed reviews someone says " Ali Hazelwood, this is how you write a STEM romance " Well I say Ali has nothing to worry about! This book was about 200 pages too long and repetitive. Henry was at least likeable, Clara was self-absorbed and unbelievably dense at picking up signals from both the "bad guy" and Henry. The book droned on and on then when they do get together there is an unnecessary bump in the road quickly resolved. This is the author's first book, hopefully in the future she will have better developed characters and a tighter story. Maybe look for a tougher editor.

This took awhile for me to really get into. The premise of two colleagues that were in love with each other was good. Yet, the execution of the story was a bit boring. Let me start off by apologizing for the super late review. I’ve had it ready to go, and just couldn’t get around to actually posting it.

Now that that’s out the way, I absolutely 𝒍𝒐𝒗𝒆𝒅 this book! As I was reading this book, the only person I could picture in my head was Henry Cavill lol. Between the MMC’s name being Henry, and the multiple Superman references, it was bound to happen though.

I adore Henry with my whole heart. He’s literally perfect, which is unfortunately how we know he’s fiction. Seriously though, he’s fantastic! Green flags all around for him.

I loved Clara too! It was easy to see where her insecurities came from, so I tried not to judge her actions so much. She’s also really funny. Both of them are now that I think about it.

For my smut lovers, there’s really only 1 smut scene, but you should still absolutely read this book. It’s so good. The way both MC’s are so oblivious though! The slow burn was worth it, however.

This was a very quick and easy read. I enjoyed the book so much, and I’ll definitely be reading more from this author.

I received this arc in exchange for an honest review. 🤍

this was such a cute and enjoyable read. the pacing was perfect and i really liked the writing style. it is a single pov from the mmc’s perspective.

the book is about clara and henry who have reunited after 7 years since university. they are working on a project together at clara’s pharmaceutical firm and pick up right where they left off.

the development of their romance was really sweet and i loved that he fell first. this has similar vibes to the love hypothesis but is definitely unique in itself.

overall such a cute and quick read, i really enjoyed it!

id like to highlight before reading this, this is my opinion and i understand the effort that goes into writing a book and i think it could be better with some editing.

respectfully what was that?
1. he literally pined after her for SEVEN years and somehow she didn't notice despite EXPLICITLY saying there has always been something between them? Make that make sense.
2. their nicknames for each other were superman and wonder woman??? because they kept saving each other from unwanted attention from other people?? like, no thank you, david corenswet is too good for this book.
3. this was a 300 paged book and nothing happened at all on her behalf until about 206, when she out of nowhere, confessed her love for him after being separated for 24 hours. girl you did not even think about him for seven years.
4. the only hot thing about this book is that it is made of paper and can be used as kindling in a fire.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

mmc looking like clark kent ?? thanks god for the new superman movie with david corenswet in it, my imagination was going crazyyyy 🤭

anyway. very conflicted about how to rate this. i loved the first approx. 70%. the pace was good and i loved the development of clara’s relationship with henry after reuniting.

but then it kind of flopped?? for one, i really missed going into past and truly seeing how henry felt and how clara felt. and especially how their friendship looked. one chapter of that wasn’t enough. anddddd i didn’t like how the truth came out and that was it. it just seemed rushed and we didn’t really get enough of them.

but a really cute stem romance with many funny parts. <3<3 i still had fun reading this!!

This book did not convince me from the beginning, both Clara and Henry were not believable one in her incredible unawareness and the other one who did not know he was handsome and super charming. The stereotypes then were really too "classics", her father abandons her and then here she is, devastated, forever.... In short, not one of the romances I would recommend to my friends.

I received from the Publisher a complimentary digital advanced review copy of the book in exchange for a honest review.

it took me a LONG time to get into this book and i contemplated not finishing it a few times. i loved most of the tropes (friends to lovers, grumpy/sunshine, workplace romance, and second chance romance) but i hated the miscommunication trope 🤢 overall, things were just really boring and i feel like it was a poorly executed story. i really liked the ending though, and i think it saved the book

thank you to harpercollins uk and netgalley for the arc in exchange for my review!

The main character is annoying, the whole book is just a miscommunication trope after another. The conflict is sooooo dull and overstretched (and not well executed). The pacing?? What is that. Either it goes months between chapters even though something interesting is happening and we get to hear "funny" things that happened in passing, or the chapter breaks happen in the weirdest places in the middle of a scene or dialogue where it doesn't make sense.

Also, the main character is annoying

I wanted to like this, but I didn't. I hate that the female protagonist is supposed to be an educated scientist, but instead acts like a bumbling immature idiot most of the time. Her characterization was so weak. And the conflict and writing wasn't for me.
This may be a stem romance, but it didn't even come close to comparing to our Lord and Savior Ali Hazelwood 😭

God this was crap. I skim-read the last 20 pages because I just wanted it to be over.

This was a really cute and fun read. This book gave me major Ali Hazelwood vibes so if you enjoy her books you’ll definitely like this one! It was a very easy read and the plot was quite simple and enjoyable.

I liked the chemistry between Henry and Clara. Both characters were likeable even if Clara’s insecurities frustrated me a few times. I think the 7 years apart and the characters background could’ve been more developed.

My only complaint would be the ending. It felt too fast paced and i thought the scene where Clara meets Henry’s parents should’ve happened earlier in the book. I also wished the epilogue took place a few months later and not just hours after the last chapter, but overall it was a nice book with lots of cute romantic clichés.

Thank you Netgalley and the publisher for providing me this ARC in exchange for my honest review.

Thank you Harper Collins UK and netgalley for an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Super cute!!! It has very similar vibes to Love Hypothesis which I absolutely loved so I was super excited to read this one. It was so cute. A good amount of STEM mixed with romance. I enjoyed the character development in Clara. Clara and Henry were also chefs kiss!! I loved their banter and their chemistry. This book was super cute!!

If you enjoy reading about women in STEM, a cute workplace romance with fun banter and pining, I would highly recommend this book!

A British STEM romcom

I’ve loved other STEM romances from big authors, but this one had the added bonus of being by a British author. The banter and conversation throughout the book was wonderfully written and appealed to my sense of humour.

Whilst being a light-hearted romcom, The Hot Henry Effect explores some heavier topics; abandonment issues, a failed marriage, and sexual harassment/assault but all this lends itself to strengthen the plot.

I found myself immersed in the lives of Clara and Henry, and had everything crossed that they’d end up together!

Overall, this book was a great take on a STEM romance and a joy to read.
