Gabriel José de la Concordia García Márquez was a Colombian novelist, short-story writer, screenwriter and journalist. García Márquez, familiarly known as "Gabo" in his native country, was considered one of the most significant authors of the 20th century. In 1982, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature.

He studied at the University of Bogotá and later worked as a reporter for the Colombian newspaper El Espectador and as a foreign correspondent in Rome, Paris, Barcelona, Caracas, and New York. He wrote many acclaimed non-fiction works and short stories, but is best-known for his novels, such as One Hundred Years of Solitude (1967) and Love in the Time of Cholera (1985). His works have achieved significant critical acclaim and widespread commercial success, most notably for popularizing a literary style labeled as magical realism, which uses magical elements and events in order to explain real experiences. Some of his works are set in a fictional village called Macondo, and most of them express the theme of solitude.

Having previously written shorter fiction and screenplays, García Márquez sequestered himself away in his Mexico City home for an extended period of time to complete his novel Cien años de soledad, or One Hundred Years of Solitude, published in 1967. The author drew international acclaim for the work, which ultimately sold tens of millions of copies worldwide. García Márquez is credited with helping introduce an array of readers to magical realism, a genre that combines more conventional storytelling forms with vivid, layers of fantasy.

Another one of his novels, El amor en los tiempos del cólera (1985), or Love in the Time of Cholera, drew a large global audience as well. The work was partially based on his parents' courtship and was adapted into a 2007 film starring Javier Bardem. García Márquez wrote seven novels during his life, with additional titles that include El general en su laberinto (1989), or The General in His Labyrinth, and Del amor y otros demonios (1994), or Of Love and Other Demons.

"And he saw two pensive buzzards who were drying themselves in the sun on the ridgepole of the house next door."

Think about one of your favorite short stories. What's the first thing that comes to mind? The characters? A pivotal action? Setting? Ending? A vivid image?

I suspect a good number of readers of Gabriel García Márquez's One of These Days will think of Aurelio Escovar, the skinny dentist without a degree, or the Mayor walking in with only the left side of his face shaved, or the dentist telling the Mayor he'll have to pull out his wisdom tooth without anesthesia. Many readers will undoubtedly think of the dentist's words that provide the backstory for both the mayor, the dentist and the people of the town - "Now you'll pay for our twenty dead men."

However, for me, the image that sticks, the picture I have in my mind when I reflect back on this intense tale of the dentist, the mayor and violence in a small Colombian town, is the description of those two pensive buzzards drying themselves in the sun on the roof of the house next door. I image those buzzards awaiting their next meal and knowing they will not be disappointed.

mqdefault

The short story “One of These Days” by Gabriel García Márquez examines the desolate unremarkable cycle of life and the helplessness of human beings in face of injustice.

Although quite a bleak theme, it is present throughout the story, starting off with the opening: “Aurelio Escovar, a dentist without a degree, and a very early riser, opened his office at six…He seemed not to be thinking about what he was doing, but worked steadily, pumping the drill with his feet , even when he didn’t need it” (Márquez 15). The mood in the very first paragraph is one of boredom and habit. The phrase, “he seemed not to be thinking about what he was doing” shows how Escovar goes through these mechanical motions everyday without ever deviating from his cycle. The introduction also helps demonstrate Escovar’s power and status in society as well as depict his ordinary life as an ordinary man completing his ordinary job.

The following theme of helplessness in face of injustice can be more clearly seen in the core part of the story where Aurelio Escovar denies the Mayor of anesthesia and pulls out his teeth, especially in the quote, “Without rancor, rather with bitter tenderness, he said: ‘Now you’ll pay for our twenty dead men.’” (Márquez 17). Although this clearly portrays Escovar’s lust for revenge, the dentist's manner of saying it betrays a lack of conviction. He is looking for retribution for the Mayor’s crimes, but it is as if he believes his small action will have no impact upon the corruption of society, and that really, there is no hope for change, hence the “bitter tenderness”. Perhaps Escovar can maintain power for a few moments by refusing to give anesthesia to the Mayor, but eventually, he will be just as helpless and insignificant as everyone else. Time will pass, all will be forgotten, the Mayor will still have his power and Escovar will still go back to waking up at six, polishing fake teeth, and doing his job as if nothing had changed. All will go back to the way it was. As a matter of fact, this idea is also very present in another book called “The Stranger'' by Albert Camus, especially in the quote, ““It occurred to me that anyway one more Sunday was over, that Maman was buried now, that I was going back to work, and that, really, nothing had changed.” ( Camus 24). Both these stories convey a disheartening lack of hope that appears very prominent in day to day life.

The ending of “One of These Days” also reinforces this idea of perpetual inertia, where things will always return to how they were regardless of the actions taken to deviate off of this lifeless path. It talks about the Mayor’s ever-present corrupt power and Aurelio Escovar’s inability to change it. This can be seen when the Mayor asks for the dentist to send the bill, saying that whether it was to him or to the town, it was still the “same damn thing” (Márquez 17). As for the relationships between characters, Escovar represents the common working citizen while the Mayor represents the high elite. Clearly there is no love lost between the two, and this story works hard to particularly emphasize the power dynamics between classes. The rich hold the power, and the poor are left chasing after it.

Gabriel Garcia Marquez is amazing! He can do wonders with very few pages. “One of These Days” is about a dentist who doesn’t want to pull the mayor’s tooth. What happens when he is forced to do it is nothing short of brilliance as Garcia Marquez reveals history, political concerns and human nature with sophistication.

In his short story “One of These Days”, Gabriel Garcia Marquez uses the craft of tone to set the stage for the point that he is attempting to highlight. The story opens with a dentist clearly going through the same routine each morning. Marquez already establishes a tone of monotony and bondage. The dentist’s day is quickly interrupted when the mayor comes in agony with an infected tooth giving the dentist an ultimatum to either pull it or be shot. The dentist finally complies and pulls the tooth. When the ordeal is over, the mayor proclaims that it did not matter if the bill was sent to him or the town; it was the same thing.
Marquez uses the craft of tone extremely well, allowing the reader to feel the oppression of a corrupted government. When I first began reading the story, I thought that the writing was just flat and uneventful. As I went on, however, I realized that the author purposefully used such language to place the reader into the mood felt within that dental office and the rest of the town. It is amazing how much was said without directly being stated and how much that enhanced the story. I could learn so much from this sort of craft.
This might not be a very appropriate mentor text to use with younger students because it has some explicit language. Although, if I was teaching 5th grade I would take a part of the story for the student to analyze the tone and make predictions.

I LOVED THIS.

Aurelio is a brave, courageous man who does not accept tyranny despite his helplessness.

The story treads on the heels of Aurelio Escover on his pursuit of a revenge, no matter how weak.

The themes of power, corruption and class distinction make up the entire story. The mayor is a merciless tyrant who abuses his power for his own benefit. Kills people for sports and mistreat the working class by stealing from them.

Marxists will have a field day dragging this guy. I should know, i dragged him.

I got this one for my literary theory exam and I'm pretty confident when i say that i did pretty well. *self high-five*

I thought it was pretty alright. Because it's so vague, there's a lot left up for interpretation. I wish there was more world-building and storytelling and we got to find out more about how the Mayor was responsible for the deaths of 20 men, so I feel unsatisfied with everything stopping so abruptly. There's so much that I can speculate about what happened and why, but it also wasn't captivating enough to make me take the brainpower to think about it too hard. Maybe if there was more to the story I'd want to theorize more.

Marquez' story highlights themes of political resistance and power dynamics through the relationship between an unlicensed dentist and a town mayor. The mayor is suggested to be corrupt, maybe the foil to a failed resistance (12 men dead). Nevertheless, although the themes in this story are intriguing, Marquez' nuance does the narrative a disservice, making the meaning more convoluted than ambiguous.

I really enjoyed this story despite how short it was. I liked how a lot of information isn't given or is rather ambiguous as it leaves a lot of this story up for imagination. Leaving a lot of this story up for interpretation creates new ideas as to what the purpose could be, considering the time and location there are many factors that could lead to the choice of words in dialogue between characters as well as the actions/threats made by each character.

The story was short and paced well it didn't feel like it was dragged on making it easy to read. Despite the story being short it was able to convey a sense of corruption and power abuse with both the mayor and Aurelio. The imagery in the short story was very good especially when the mayor is getting his tooth pulled. The story may also have taken place in Columbia so there could be some parallels to the cartel.

This story was very short and after the first time reading through it I didn't really understand the theme throughout the story. However, after talking to my friend and reading through it again I realized that the story was about a corrupt mayor who uses his power against his town and takes advantage of the poor. For example, he considered himself and the town the same thing when the dentist asked who to charge the bill too which is a clear example that he is corrupt.

I liked this story, it was short in a way that felt purposeful and didn't interfere with the emotion and message behind it. I liked the juxtaposition between the two characters, we have a dentist who is just a normal, average person in the town, and we have the mayor, the boss of the town. Even with their differences, the mayor still requires the services that the dentist provides. The fact that the dentist denied him at first, too, it interesting.

It was weird, didn't exactly understand this story. It was made to represent corruption in power and what happens when they need something from the people that are victims of this same corruption. We get to view an interesting power dynamic between a dentist and a mayor. We see the dentist take control of the situation and threaten the mayor as we see tension build between them the story ends with asking where to send the bill, you or the town.

An average read.
A story about a dentist who had no degree, still performed dentistry. His situation is very miserable as his place had crumbling ceiling and a dusty spider web with spider's eggs and dead insects in it. He himself was very skinny & had a look that rarely corresponded to the situation, the way deaf people have of looking.

I personally don't know how to feel about this story. I appreciate that it was fairly short, but I don't really understand the meaning behind it. I understand that the dentist wanted the mayor to pay for the loss of 20 men, in doing so pulls his tooth without anesthesia, but that's all it means to me, nothing much more.

I don’t really connect with this story, and to me, it feels like there are a lot of loose ends left unaccounted for in terms of character and plot development. I understand that it’s a short story, which makes developing these things more difficult, but in comparison to other short stories I’ve read, it just feels shallow and lacking.

This story is short and sweet, only meeting three characters during that short time. The author paints a neutral/cold atmosphere and invites us to think of the antagonist in a curious yet suspicious manner. The story rises more questions than it answers and leaves us wondering what the antagonist did.
