Parker had the perfect marriage. Then Eden came home.
Twenty years have passed since Dylan’s beloved sister, Celeste, was brutally murdered. Now he plans an anniversary memorial for the sister he misses to this day.
When their childhood friend, Eden, comes home to attend the memorial, Dylan invites her to stay with him and his wife, Parker.
But Parker is apprehensive. She remembers a time when Eden had designs on her husband, and she worries she still carries a torch for him. Her fears seem confirmed when Eden openly flirts with Dylan and captivates their pre-teen daughter.
As Parker desperately tries to hasten Eden’s departure, Dylan resists, fondly remembering the time they spent as childhood friends. And when Eden brings up questions about who murdered Celeste, Parker’s fears only escalate. She thinks her husband’s mental health could suffer if Eden keeps digging.
Can Parker get rid of Eden before she destroys her family? And why has Eden really come back to town? As the two old friends circle each other, past secrets are revealed and they find themselves hurtling into a vortex of unimaginable pain and terror.

Cathryn Grant does it again! I was gripped instantly and on the edge of my seat throughout this twisted, fast-paced thriller. Lifelong friendships should be comforting, eliciting memories of happy, simpler times. The bond between Eden, Parker, and Dylan was strong and unbreakable. They shared treasured experiences and had a connection that they thought would last forever. An unsolved murder, suspicious behavior, mysterious motives, and past rivalry can be toxic and deadly. Will their friendship stand the test of time, or was it ever actually real in the first place? I highly recommend this to all thriller addicts. Thank you Inkubator Books and NetGalley for my copy. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
No surprises in this story but it took forever to get there. The same thoughts ran through on repeat that I lost patience and skipped over these sections. The book would have been better if it was shorter and Eden and Dylan's ending was an absolute let down considering how much of the past was in the book.
Don't Trust Her takes readers on a suspenseful journey into the lives of the characters entangled in a web of secrets, mistrust, and a lingering unsolved murder. The story revolves around Dylan's efforts to memorialize his beloved sister, Celeste, who met a tragic end, but it quickly becomes clear that this memorial gathering will reawaken old tensions and hidden desires.
The book is undeniably fast-paced, making it an engaging and easy read. The author skillfully maintains a sense of tension and mystery throughout the narrative, which keeps the reader turning the pages. The central question of who murdered Celeste is an effective hook, drawing readers in and compelling them to uncover the truth alongside the characters.
However, as the review suggests, the plot's predictability can be a drawback. I found myself predicting the twists and developments, but that didn’t stop me from finishing this in one night.
Let’s also talk about Dylan's character. If the goal was to write a trashy husband - then honestly the author did a great job. Even though I know how this ends - Dylan not listening to his wife or taking her concerns seriously is such a red flag. I honestly wanted to punch him - he triggered my flight or fight.
In conclusion, this read was quick, entertaining yet predictable. The flawed characters and their interactions provide a thought-provoking exploration of trust, loyalty, and the dark secrets that can bind or unravel relationships.
Do friendships really stand the test of time? For three friends, Parker, Eden and Dylan this question is put to the test. These friends since childhood drift apart after college, but was it the distance that separated them or something more? The memorial of Dylan’s sister Celeste brings Eden back to her home town. Now married with kids, Parker and Dylan open their home for their out of country guests as memories and questions arise. What actually happened to Celeste? Was everyone telling the truth? Was this friendship one that could last forever? The twists and turns in this book simply made this a great read. Although, I did predict the ending, the author added some interesting details that truly made me fall in love with the writing style. I would absolutely recommend this book to anyone looking for a thriller with a multi narrative. Thank you Cathryn Grant and Netgalley for the ARC of this book.
DNF at 77%. Usually when I spot the killer early-as in this case, I still want to read how it all plays out but I Couldn’t stand these people a minute longer. Eden was way out of line the entire time. It didn’t matter she was looking into the murder of Dylan’s sister 20 years ago. She was nasty and insufferable. She flies in after 15 years and usurps her way into Dylan and Parker’s marriage all the while nursing the childhood grudge bc Dylan chose Parker.
And Dylan! What a sorry excuse of a husband. Ugh! And an idiot to boot. Parker was whiny and bitchy. Which I can understand, but then she just became stupid.
Wow! What a great read. I read tons of psychological suspense bit every one I read is always different from the last. Don't Trust Her was all that I ever want in a psyche suspense novel. I was riveted from beginning to end. I can't wait to read what Cathryn has up her sleeve next. She's definitely on my list of favorite authors. Bravo!
When I read a thriller I expect to be gripped from the start and to be held by the same grip almost throughout the whole book. Sadly, with this one it wasn’t the case. It started really promising. The prologue was amazing. But it got not so interesting pretty fast. Yes, I was wondering why Eden really was there and yes, I was curious about who the killer was BUT because the whole setting is 20 years after the murder the whole sudden ‘investigation’ by Eden felt kind of out of touch.
When I read a thriller I expect to be shocked by the plot twist, especially when the book cover promises a ‘killer twist’. I was neither shocked nor surprised. That was pretty disappointing because that’s exactly the point of reading a thriller.
At times it felt like the book dragged on and on. Also it often was repetitive which lead to an even deeper feeling of the book taking too long to unfold the interesting parts.
Character wise it wasn’t much better. •Dylan was delusional and completely hung up on the past. His behavior was also giving the vibe of a man who’s got a work-wife and thinks that that’s appropriate. Almost all interactions between him and Eden were just weird, considering he was Parker’s husband. Dylan being so trustful in the things Eden says and never ever really listening to his WIFE and her feelings??? That’s some weird position to hold onto.
•Eden was stubborn and annoying. She haaaad to come between everybody and just stir up things everybody tried to get over. It was just so random - again because of the 20 year gap between the actual murder and her sudden interest in detecting the murderer.
•Parker was super insecure but somehow at some(!!!) points understandable so because of the things Dylan and Eden did, BUT at the same time she had a too obsessed and paranoid behavior about anything Eden-related. If she would have been a bit calmer….. if you know, you know…
All in all I’m disappointed and definitely had expected more. Sadly, this book really wasn’t it for me.
First, I want to thank Inkubator Books and Netgalley for this ARC.
I really wasn't sure what I was going to rate this, but I landed on 3-stars. It wasn't awful but I easily and early on guessed who did it, so that surprise was ruined when it was finally revealed. Some of the story was kind of outlandish... I mean, what married couple lets someone stay after that person kisses one of them? Dylan's reaction was not realistic. If he was actually committed to Parker, he would have understood why she wanted Eden to leave. He seemed to convert back to his childhood self and it was just cringey to read, as a married woman myself. I did like the idea of the book, I just wish it were executed a little more psychologically.
I highly recommend "Don't Trust Her" by Cathryn Grant to anyone who enjoys psychological thrillers. The author builds suspense throughout the book with well-developed characters and plot twists that keep you guessing until the very end. It's a real page-turner that explores the themes of trust and betrayal in a unique and intriguing way.
Thank you to NetGalley and Inkubator Books for allowing me to read and review this book.
DNF at 18%. Tired of reading about Julian, don't understand where the story is going, and not engaged with any of the characters. The prologue was good and then it just went downhill fast. I've liked other books from this author but this one just wasn't for me.
At first appearance, Parker and Dylan have a perfect family. When their childhood friend Eden returns home, things start to change. Eden came back for the 20th anniversary of Dylan’s sister’s murder. Her comeback will open new questions about Celeste’s death and cause problems in Parker’s and Dylan’s marriage.
We follow three POVs in the past and present. I really liked this way of narrating, because it kept my attention throughout the whole novel. All in total, there are around 10 characters in the whole book, so the plot was easy to follow. I liked the dynamic between the characters and the way the author presented them to us. We can sense from the beginning some of them are trying to hide something. We learn a lot about the relationship between the three main characters. Why did they lose contact almost completely? How do each of them remember events from their past? And what are their plans for the future?
Here we have a mix of drama and light psychological thriller. Unfortunately, the plot was too predictable for me. I guessed how most of the things would resolve, so I missed having more tension and mystery. Maybe it is also connected to the fact that I read a lot of thrillers, so my expectations are quite high when it comes to this genre. Nevertheless, the story was interesting and I actually read it really fast. It was quite alluring to see how people (don’t) change from childhood to adult age and how some stories can never be forgotten.
I would recommend this book to readers who don't read thrillers so often, because I think the story can be more captivating to them than to those who are already big thriller lovers.
Thank you NetGalley and Inkubator Books for sending me this book for review consideration.
Wow this book was a good read. She was so worried about her childhood best friend taking her husband and diggin up the truth about her husband’s sister’s murder… only to find out who the killer is which is a good twist.. do you know who to trust these days?
It's not often I say a book is a must read but this..... is definitely one of those times!! This is so well written, it's multilayered and had multiple povs. It's got some amazing twists that I didn't see coming and I couldnt get through the pages fast enough. I absolutely loved it
I received an arc copy of this book from Net Galley in exchange for my honest opinion of it. This book was good but not one of my favorites. I normally love books by this author but most of it just read like a typical women's fiction book until the last 20 percent. The twists were predictable also. I will definitely read more by this author but this one was just okay for me.
First, I want to thank Cathryn Grant, Inkubator Books and Zooloo Book Tours for providing me with this book so I can bring you this review.
Ohh Celeste Campbell you were taken away from us way too soon! Cathryn Grant had me on the edge of my seat dying to know what really happened to Celeste in Don’t Trust Her!! Why after 20 years was this murder not solved!
The cover graphics on this book cover were very eye-catching as it gave it a mysterious vibe!
Friendship was one of the key elements in Don’t Trust Her. What these friends meant to each other in the past to where they were today. Within this aspect I found some very important messages that many could relate to.
Eden was the one character in the book that rubbed me the wrong way for so many reasons why!
There was a lot of heartache, tragedies, drama, secrets, twists and turns throughout the story that made it a thrilling read.
Cathryn Grant really scored again with Don’t Trust Her. This novel started out strong and kept the tension taut through the entire book. Ms. Grant is the queen of clever plots and twists. I’ve read every book she’s published and I’ve never been disappointed. She’s not a formulaic writer—each book is a prize and a surprise all on its own. If you want to invest in a good read, pick up any of her books, you won’t be disappointed.
Thank you NetGalley for an advance copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This was a solid 3 star medium burn thriller. I figured out who did and why pretty early on but it was still entertaining to read the past and present stories and how it all came out in the end. I was entertained from the start. Definitely a recommendation for someone wanting to start in on a psychological thriller.
I wholeheartedly endorse "Don't Trust Her" by Cathryn Grant for fans of psychological thrillers. The author skillfully weaves suspense throughout the narrative, using well-crafted characters and unexpected plot twists that will keep you in suspense until the very last page. This book is a true page-turner, delving into themes of trust and betrayal in a distinctive and captivating manner.
I extend my gratitude to NetGalley and Inkubator Books for granting me the opportunity to read and provide a review of this exceptional novel.
An old friend intrudes on a married couple's home when she comes to stay to attend a memorial. But can she be trusted when it seems she's out to cause trouble?
This was a quick read and I honestly don't know why it's taken me so long to get to read it. The storyline was addictive and I enjoyed the author's writing style. I now look forward to reading more by her.
As a freebie book, I don't usually have high expectations. I did enjoy this book though. There's a big twist (I love when that happens) that is revealed with still about 20% of the book to go. That way it is explained and the dust can be settled in the end.
Don't Trust Her by Cathryn Grant is a twisty psychological thriller that will keep you on the very edge of your seat.
Twenty years ago, Dylan's sister Celeste was murdered, leaving behind a multitude of unanswered questions. Dylan has since married Parker, his childhood friend. But when their mutual friend Eden returns to town to attend a memorial service for Celeste, old feelings of jealousy and resentment begin to resurface, and Parker knows that she must hasten Eden's departure if she is to maintain a feeling of security within her marriage. When Eden starts to ask questions about Celeste's murder, the digging up of the past will threaten to damage and destroy even more lives.
This was a fast-paced read that I devoured. Cathryn Grant does not disappoint, and her latest will surely have readers flying through the pages.
Many thanks to NetGalley and Inkubator Books for an ARC.
My favourite read by this author so far a powerful psychological thriller told in two timelines past and present. Plenty of twists and a strong storyline keep you engaged till the end. Recommended. Thanks to Netgalley and Inkubator Books for the ARC.
This was a great thriller that kept me guessing the whole time. The ending was really good, too! Not what I was expecting. I would recommend this book for sure!
Don't Trust Her is a psychological thriller that will have you holding your breath as you anxiously wait to see what might happen next. The story follows Eden, Parker, and Dylan, three childhood friends who grew up together but drifted apart once Dylan and Parker started dating. Then, Dylan's sister Celeste was found murdered in the woods. The trauma brought Dylan and Parker closer together, while Eden went her own way, eventually ending up in Italy. Now, twenty years later, Eden is back. Dylan and Parker are married with two kids. Eden is divorced and childless. At Celeste's final memorial, the trio reconnects, and Dylan invites Eden to stay with him and Parker. But Parker doesn't trust Eden because she used to have a crush on Dylan. Parker just knows Eden is back to steal Dylan away from her. But is she? Why did Eden really come back? And what happened all those years ago in the woods with Celeste? I thought this was a great story. It's tense. It's thrilling. And even though I had a feeling I knew who was involved in Celeste's murder, I wasn't 100% sure on the why aspect of what they did. After the truth is revealed, it definitely makes sense, even though it's a horrific and awful reason. I kinda felt bad for Dylan. He just wanted to reconnect and relive the same friendship and happy memories he had with Parker and Eden when they were younger. But the two women don't make it easy. Parker is jealous and suspicious, and she's adamant about booting Eden out of their home. And Eden seems to be weaseling her way into the family, winning over Parker's kids and siding with Dylan over every little thing. But is Parker justified in her dislike of Eden? Is Eden really trying to destroy Parker's family and take it for herself? This was one of those stories that grabbed you and pulled you in, making your head spin as you tried to uncover the truth behind what happened to Celeste and why there was so much animosity between Parker and Eden when they had seemingly been best friends. If you're a fan of psychological thrillers, give this one a go. 4 stars!
What a fantastic book. It had me gripped from the start going straight into the action, which kept going the whole way through. It is well written with chapters of a good length and allows the reader to build a good picture of each character and their back stories by jumping between the present day and their younger years. The twist towards the does become apparent before the big reveal, and the motive is also fairly obvious before the plot is complete. I really enjoyed this book and would recommend others to read.
This is actually the first book that I've read by this author but I am sure I'll be adding more soon - this was a great read.
Eden, Dylan and Parker had been friends since childhood. Dylan's sister, Celeste had been brutally murdered years ago but even still, nobody has been held accountable. When Eden returns to town for the special memorial being held for Celeste, we see whether the friendship has lasted and whether happy reminiscing turns into bad memories.
I loved that we followed this story through both multiple timelines and via multiple pov's. This meant that we had a great insight into the past, hearing how the group met and became friends, about the time of the murder and also the relationship now in present day.
The characters were well developed through this too, which meant we were able to connect with each of them individually and therefore become invested in their stories. It also meant that I found I read on for longer to try and get to a nice pause point - hence racing through this!
I found the writing style perfectly creepy. It really suited my autumn vibes mood read well. I did guess the twist before the end, but this was fast-paced and exciting so didn't really spoil my overall enjoyment at all.
My Thoughts: another brilliant book from Cathryn! – if you’ve been following my reviews for a while you’ll know that my favourite thrillers and multiple perspectives and multiple timelines, which is exactly what we get!
We’re following, Eden, Parker and Dylan, childhood best friends who lost touch after a one of them moved away, but not before the life of another one was torn apart in the worst way imaginable..
We get to see the friendship dynamic from children, to teenagers and now to adults, an things go back to how they were now that all three of them are in the same place again after so many years? Or is there too much water under the bridge?
I was hooked, so much so that this one turned into a one sitting read, I was so invested!
The characters are well developed, they were all so different despite all having the same upbringing.
Secrets were kept promises were broken and so many lies were told.. the only problem is once you start telling lies you end up buried in them in order to keep up appearances.
I guessed the twist pretty early on but for me that added to the story, almost like I was in on the secret 🤣
I can’t wait to see what Cathryn comes up with next!
This book started out promising and then very quickly I got bored with it wondering: 1) why a grown man was insistenting ad nauseum upon “wanting to get back what we’d had when we were kids” with a childhood friend that had not been in his and his wife’s lives for a very long time, 2) why that woman would so uncomfortably and obviously stick around invading a private space and 3) how I could manage reading about this third unlikable character for one second longer.
Predicable with such a bizarre ending.
This may be for you, but it was definitely not for me.
Don't Trust Her by Cathryn Grant. Parker had the perfect marriage. Then Eden came home. A really good read. Twisty. I had a theory but was sort of right. 4*.
Cathryn Grant returns following The Secret She Kept with her latest thriller, DON'T TRUST HER—a deliciously wicked twisted triangle when the past and present collide in a clever game of cat-and-mouse, leaving you guessing which is predator or prey?
It has been 20 years since Celeste was murdered while reading a book in her favorite spot in the woods. (this was me as a child, except the Walkman was not invented yet). While listening to her Walkman, she was unaware of the monster approaching behind her.
Celeste Campbell was nineteen and had finished her first year of college when a monster without a soul crept up behind her and smashed the back of her head with a rock. Her murder changed all their lives. Celeste was Dylan's older, wiser sister, who always said a friendship with a triangle could not last. The group thought she was just jealous—she was correct.
What if Celeste had not come home that summer, gone out to read by the creek that evening after dinner, or had not been listening to music with her headphones on? There were so many what-ifs.
Dylan has planned a 20th-anniversary memorial service for her and invited some of their childhood friends. He is married to Parker, and they have two children, Brianna and Maverick. Dylan never got over her death.
Dylan, Parker, and Eden were best friends years ago. Two friends after the same man, which tore their friendship apart. When Dylan invites Eden to stay with them at their house when in town, Parker is unhappy (livid). Eden planned to stay at a local B&B, but Dylan would not hear of it. They needed to catch up. Eden had lived in Milan for the past fifteen years and recently divorced.
There was also a creepy neighbor, Julian (veterinarian), who liked to keep tabs on the neighbors with his expensive pair of binoculars. He never married or found a life partner. He lived alone in his parent's house since their deaths. Who was initially a suspect but was cleared.
With Eden staying with them, Parker's life she thought was perfect until now. Parker is suspicious and jealous when Eden flirts with Dylan. She wants her gone from their home. Why would her husband invite Eden to stay with them without discussing with her first? How far will she go to protect their family? What are Eden's motives?
Alternating from then and now, we hear from POV: Eden, Parker, and Dylan. In the present, someone dies. Was it murder or an accident? Does it have any connection to the past? Did Julian know something about the murder years ago? Was he getting too close?
No one is what they seem. And the fates of these two women twist and turn until the shocking truth emerges. Often, the monsters are right in front of us.
Cathryn Grants weaves a twisted tale of love, revenge, trust, and betrayal. DON'T TRUST HER is a fast-paced domestic suspense that keeps you guessing until this toxic triangle drama ends. A diabolical cat-and-mouse thriller; however, who is the cat, and who is the mouse? For fans of author Hank Phillippi Ryan, Miranda Rijks, and Emily Shiner.
Thanks to #InkubatorBooks and #NetGalley for a complimentary ARC in exchange for an honest review.
