A collection of "spooky" stories just in time for the Halloween season.

description

Unsurprisingly, most of these are forgettable.
There were a few stand-outs like the Man-Bat story, which had a Gotham teacher who idolized Batman and went out on the streets in the hopes of being saved by him. She ends up with a different view of the world and of herself.

description

The Question tracks a ghostly killer.

description

Animal Man goes trick or treating in order to make sure his daughter is safe and witnesses her being a hero to a kid who needs her help.

description

Clark investigates a haunted asylum and finds a serial killer and his ghosts.

description

Nightwing and Red Hood team up to take out vampires.

description

Lobo forces his daughter to help him find a Halloween costume for a party.

description

Hal Jordan & Jason Blood team up to take on a demon.

You get a whole lot of different art and writing styles, and it might be worth it for someone who really enjoys all the DC Holiday specials. I'd say try to borrow this one from a library if at all possible.

This was pretty fun for a Halloween special but I was a bit bored by the end of it, to be honest.

It's a mixed bag of stories. Some are fantastic and others fall a bit flat. Artwork is also a mix but for the most part I liked it.

Decent variety but as a holiday special it probably didn't need this much material.

DC’s Ghouls Just Wanna Have Fun #1 is a DC Comics horror anthology issue with stories written by Ellen Tremiti, Kenny Porter, Michael W. Conrad, Christopher Sean, Laneya, Gregory Burnham, Alex Galen, Adam F. Goldberg, Hans Rodinoff, and John Arcudi with art by Tyler Crook, Riley Rossmo, Christopher Mitten, Dexter Soy, Javier Rodriguez, Fabio Veras, Danny Earls, and Shawn McManus.

The Question investigates a disgusting crime at a fashion show, Green Lantern and Etrigan team up to battle space monsters, Animal Man keeps an eye on his daughter on Halloween night, Nightwing and Red Hood team up to battle vampires in Blüdhaven, Superman investigates a haunted prison, Robotman is haunted by his past, Lobo searches for the perfect Halloween party costume, and Man-Bat gets the save from an unsuspecting hero.

I always enjoy these Halloween specials that DC Comics releases. 2023’s issue features a lot more up-and-coming talent then some of the big names that have contributed in the past. My favorite stories were The Question, Nightwing/Red Hood, Animal Man, Superman, and Man-Bat. Reading this book made me realize how I still need to read the Animal Man series from the 80s. I also want a full maxi-series or Black Label Superman horror title without any major crossovers. Just Superman trying to tackle supernatural and spooky foes on his own.

The Question in "A Look To Die For" - 2.5 Stars (I feel like she deserved a cooler mystery)
Green Lantern in "The Shadow Over Coast City" - 5 Stars (Jason Blood/Etrigan & Hal's dynamic was everything in this. Pure choatic fun)
Animal Man in "This Day, Anything Goes" - 3 Stars
Nightwing in "The Dark Bite" - 3.5 Stars (I feel like this one should've been flushed out more)
Superman in "The Spoils" - 4 Stars
Robotman in "Not Fade Away" - no rating (I'm not really familiar with the history of Doom Patrol & the relationship of the characters, so this one kinda flew over my head and it doesn't feel right to rate it)
Crush & Lobo in "Happy Hal(lobo)ween" - 4.5 Stars
Man-Bat in "Out of the Shadows" - 4 Stars

Last year upon release I remember not loving this anthology, this year I feel like it’s a solid collection of Halloween goodies!

The Question 3 ⭐️
-Kinda boring supernatural case to solve, made better by appearances from Mr Pyg and Gentleman Ghost

Hal Jordan and Etrigan 3.5⭐️

Animal Man and Animal Girl 4⭐️

Superman and Lois 5🌟🌟🌟

Nightwing and Redhood 3.5⭐️
-This story doesn’t really end, it just feels like a teaser for something else that may exist out there but idk and don’t super care

Robotman, Doom Patrol alum and surprise guest 5🌟

Lobo and Crush 4⭐️

Man-Bat 4⭐️

I really enjoyed this. A collection of different stories, with a halloween theme. Not very often you get The Question, Lobo, Doom Patrol, Man-bat, Animal Man and Etrigan the Demon in the same special. Only thing missing was a bit of Sandman or Constan... never mind, Constantine was in it to.

Trash.
First story was trash.
Animal Man story had nothing to it. Not outright bad, but just empty.
Gave up the Lobo story 2 pages in.
The ManBat Arcudi story was fine, but even that one is not outstanding by any measure.
Did not read the rest.

Great collection of stories. Nightwing one was my favourite and ended on a cliffhanger so I hope there is more! Some of my favourite DC characters turned up Etrigan, Constantine, Superman, Nightwing...Red Hood. Overall a great collection of spooky reads. Hope there is more soon.

Robotman is not a ghoul having fun. It’s always the harboring of a deep existential sadness for him!

Kinda worth it just for the Lobo story where he’s trying to guess which Hugh Jackman character he looks like and Wolverine can’t be said. It even references the Lobo/Aquaman fancasting.

Fun, light Halloween sampler with several short stories. The Superman, Robotman, Crush/Lobo, and Man-Bat stories stood out the most. The Javier Rodriguez art on the Superman story is worth the price of admission on its own.
