Perhaps no other book of the Bible feels as inaccessible and as intimidating to us as the very last one. The book of Revelation overflows with images and ideas that confound our modern ears. But if all Scripture is God-breathed and profitable, we should assume Revelation is as accessible and helpful as any other book of the Bible. Why don’t we see it that way? Two thousand years ago, John’s Revelation was circulated and read aloud among seven churches in Asia Minor. Those who heard the letter understood it and drew encouragement from its message. The same can be true for you today. Over 10 sessions of verse-by-verse Bible study, Jen Wilkin helps you discover how the last book of the Bible—the culmination of God's great story—speaks both a steadying word of assurance and a strong call to endure to the church in every age.
Jen Wilkin is a speaker, writer, and teacher of women’s Bible studies. During her thirteen years of teaching, she has organized and led studies for women in home, church, and parachurch contexts. Jen and her family are members of the Village Church in Flower Mound, Texas. She is the author of Women of the Word.
If you are looking for your strict view of Revelation or hard stances on literal versus figurative, you won’t appreciate this study and will miss out on the beauty of a rich way to dig deeper into Revelation.
Jen takes us on a journey to see how there is nothing new in Revelation. So much comes directly from other scripture that its initial recipients would recognize and that we don’t. But after this study, we will.
It is a beautiful study that opens your eyes to see how scripture is truly interconnected. If you love cross references, this study is for you.
I loved looking back throughout the Bible while studying the final book. If you think Revelation is scary, this will change your perspective entirely.
I had never studied Revelation like this and highly recommend it!
I am so thankful for the wisdom and teaching gifts Jen Wilkin has. I want to come back to more of her studies and dive deeply into scripture with her books.
Because of this study book Revelation has become a gift and encouragement rather than a book to dread or fear. There were also so many times I was just mind blown at how Scripture connects and really did get to engage in loving God with my mind. If you’re reading through Revelation this is an incredible guide and gift!
I’m thankful to Jen for writing this study for the church. Women are becoming more and more confident in reading the word of God and being transformed by the renewing of their minds. The symbolic reading of Revelation will launch many to a deeper understanding of their position of end times timelines. I was thankful that Jen started the study by commenting on the difference and value of both literal and symbolic readings of the book. She mentioned that reading symbolically should help marry where you are in interpreting timelines. I read Eugene Petersons Reversed Thunder alongside this and found his poetic descriptions of Revelation accompanied Jen’s study well marrying the mind and the heart.
I worked through this study in about a month due to my husbands sabbatical. I was so thankful to be deeply immersed in the letter and all the “look behinds” throughout the study. I would suggest working through Jen’s Genesis and Exodus studies and even Better and Abide to have a deeper sense of the symbolism found here.
My love for John increases the more I read his contributions to the holy word. His bromance with Jesus continues and excites me for the church to receive.
Jen concludes each week of study with what did you hear and how will you keep what you heard… I’ll keep answering this question moving forward but for now with worship of the lamb who was slain and incredible joy for the unveiled faces that will spend eternity being illuminated by the glory of God.
Thanks Jen for walking out “keeping the words of this book” and praise God for his encouragement to his church that he is coming soon— a limited amount of time.
As far as organization of the study: hands down my favorite of Jen’s studies. The appendix made my heart leap a little! The drawings, while not the most impressive by my hand , really helped me understand the text. I am always a huge fan of underlining and marking up the text. I used one color so much I ran out of ink. Thanks for printing the letter in the study book. Lifeway made this study lovely to hold and work through. The questions felt like a love song to God and always moving the student towards God in both mind and heart. ❤️. Just a lot of love for this study and Lifeway and Jen.
I am so curious about the background in her video teaching time. Is it carved wood? Beautiful and interesting.
Absolutely incredible study through Revelation! Jen tackles the symbolism with care and attention. A must-read for any Christian that’s hesitant to read Revelation or doesn’t know where to start; this is an excellent guide.
Jen does an excellent job helping her readers practice the skill of letting the Bible interpret Bible. When in doubt, I've learned to dig deeper into the text and "Look Behind" to see the continuity and unity of Scripture.
Before starting this book, I had heard that it was very "open handed" and didn't take strong stances. That was not the case, and most weeks, there were (at least a few) questions trying to lead me to a conclusion I didn't agree with. It's really important to look at this study with other resources that outline different viewpoints, and to test all of Jen's conclusions ourselves.
As someone who embraces symbolism in the Bible, I enjoyed this more than my friends who err on the side of literal interpretations. If your church has a hard stance on millenialism, maybe ask a church leader to look through this study and have dialogue with them about how your church's doctrine may be different.
My main takeaway is that Revelation is beautiful and hopeful, and intricately intertwined with the rest of Scripture, which is trustworthy and true.
I’ve always been so intimidated by the book of Revelation. Jen Wilkin made this book so much more accessible. She brought out the beauty and application of the chapters without getting too far in the weeds. I am so thankful that I have been taught how to “look behind” to the Old Testament and see how prophecies, tabernacle references, the story of Genesis and so much more help us interpret Revelation. For a better experience, try adding snacks + wine + 6 sweet friends to study alongside💓
Highly recommend this study as a guide for navigating a book of the Bible that can feel very intimidating! My biggest takeaway is that there is nothing new in Revelation- while I’m still confused about some of the images and timeline, overall I am encouraged by how many of the concepts and symbols are familiar when you “look behind” at other parts of the Bible. Seriously, there are some mind blowing connections! This study was just an introduction into a book that I will return to much more frequently now that I am more familiar with it when I inevitably see it connecting to other parts of scripture.
After finishing this study, I am encouraged by the symbolism and message of Revelation. I did not expect that studying the most intimidating book of the Bible would leave me with such a hope for the future! I thought I would be way more confused but I am in awe of the details and at the sovereignty and grace of God. Of course, Jen makes you work for it 😃 but studying the passage and answering questions first made me spend time with the text, which was so beneficial when it came to the teaching time. This study will deepen your understanding of not only Revelation but of all of Scripture as the story comes full circle. Couldn't recommend this study more!
Jen Wilkin’s studies are always so challenging and meaty. I did this one on my own over more than 10 weeks. I’m sure it would have been even more beneficial as a group study. This has given me a desire to study more about Revelation in the future and dig deeper into the various eschatological views. I absolutely loved all the “looking back” we did to the Old Testament. Biblical foreshadowing and symbolism always blows my mind and strengthens my faith. The way Revelation ultimately brings it back to the Garden imagery! Incredible.
Amidst so much sin, Jesus is hope and in control. “Behold, I am coming soon…”
Easily the best book of 2024. By the end of this study your book will be cut up, bent, covered in mysterious stains, torn, and soaking in your blood, sweat, and tears… And you will be able to explain a book of the Bible that might have once been ‘incomprehensible’ to you. Jen put God’s glory and majesty on display in a way I had never seen it before and I am a changed Christian because of it. JEN, YOU DID IT AGAIN!!!!!!!
When I say I feel like I have been doing this study for forever. I mean wow. Such a wonderful and detailed approach to the book of Revelation. Something I avoided for a while because it felt very intimidating and polarizing, this study handles with accuracy and humility. Instead of taking one specific view of Revelation and its interpretations, this study uses what Jen calls a “look behind” approach, where you study the book’s symbolism, and learn how much of it has already been stated other places in scripture. I loved it and would highly recommend:)
Jen Wilkin slays. And more importantly, so does John (the one Jesus loved)! Revelation is a beautiful book and this resource was a great way to learn more about it. Highly recommend for any Bible study group!!
Really good study of Revelation to get the organizational patterns, to learn what some of the numbers and symbols mean, and to see how all of it relates back to the rest of the Bible.
Such a great study. It takes a mostly symbolic approach to Revelation. It helped to bring clarity to what could be known and let what is only God’s to know to Him.
Did this study on my own and it’s one of the best I’ve ever done… takes an overwhelming and seemingly scary book and really breaks it down in a way that is understandable. It is not about “headlines and timelines” but rather understanding the symbolism of Revelation in context of the entire Bible. At the beginning of the study, Jen explains there is nearly nothing new in Revelation… and after doing this study I agree. There are a ton of cross-references and “look behinds” to show that nearly every point in Revelation is also found somewhere else in the scripture. I learned a ton and ultimately see the encouragement that Revelation was meant to be to the early persecuted church and today. 10/5.
This was a really great overview of Revelation! I love how Jen keeps the main thing THE main thing.
I feel like I have PTSD from the “Left Behind” books 🤣 and usually there are a lot of hot takes and strong opinions attached to any discussion involving Revelation. But, thankfully, not here in this study.
Is it an “easy” study? No. Not even close. There is some labor involved, but it is so worth it! This is a great resource and I definitely recommend it.
This study was incredibly educational, thought-provoking, and spiritually challenging. If you’re looking for a straightforward Bible study with an easy answer key, this is not the one. Prepare to invest significant time and energy—this study demands your full attention and commitment. Expect to pour your blood, sweat, and tears into it.
As a new mom with limited time to prepare a Bible study for college women, I found this to be more than I was ready for. Each section includes an hour-plus video from Jen Wilkin, along with four to eight (sometimes more) pages of in-depth content, multiple Old Testament references, symbolic interpretation, and reflection questions to conclude each chapter. Truly, it could take hours to work through just one week’s material.
That said, it’s still an excellent and rewarding study. I walked away feeling more confident in teaching the book of Revelation. I appreciate Wilkin’s symbolic and theological approach, and I believe my students gained a lot from it, though it was challenging and heavy at times.
However, I wouldn’t recommend this study for new believers or those unfamiliar with deeper theological concepts. Yes, all scripture is God breathed but this study in particular was not suited for a believer who is new to the Bible as it assumes you have a LOT of prior knowledge. It’s best suited for mature Christians who are ready to engage in serious theological exploration.
Am I leaving this study with all the answers to the book of Revelation? No 😅 but this study was still fantastic in that it broadened my understanding of a book that I had largely avoided because it felt intimidating. But what I loved about this study is that Jen didn’t focus on trying to force the texts into a certain timeline, but instead showed me the sovereignty of God throughout all of scripture by pointing back to older texts that gave glimpses of what we see later in Revelation. It helped me understand better how the original hearers would have heard the text and they would have understood the symbolism throughout, and I appreciated the way the text was broken down for each week of study. I’m walking away with a greater thankfulness for God’s authorship throughout the whole story of the Bible and a deeper hope in our eternal kingdom. I’ll be referencing back to this study for a long time!
Woah, what a study! I loved getting to know Revelation better, and reading through it symbolically was fascinating. I loved the "look behind's" and realizing that there was almost nothing new in this book. There were a lot of references to the prophets and especially Exodus (which I hope to study next).
This is my 5th Jen Wilkin study, but it had its own special touch. Singing the doxology at the end of each video, reading aloud the text each week, etc. I feel like there was a bit more homework than many of the other studies, but the text demands it. One of my favorite things I did in the homework was during the last week: rewriting the Lord's Prayer as if we were saying it in the new Jerusalem. It was a really beautiful exercise.
If you ever wanted to study Revelation but didn't know where to start, this study is the way to go.
This study of Revelation is very well done. Jen is full of wisdom and knowledge. She takes on a symbolic approach to the book without a hard stance on any eschatological views. I do wish she would’ve explained the views a bit during the study, but there is a guide at the back of the book defining them.
Through many cross references, we are able to see how Scripture connects and supports itself. The videos for each week of study, while at times overwhelming, were filled with knowledge and insight into Scripture.
I’ve never done an inductive study of Revelation before. This book made me feel less intimidated and more confident in my understanding of the end times.
Truly excellent Bible study!! This study took a symbolic and verse-by-verse approach to studying the book of Revelation. It often prompted the reader to “look behind” at other parts of scripture, so parts of the Old Testament made parts of Revelation clearer to me and vice versa. I’d recommend this study to any Believer who wants to understand Revelation better and/or feels intimidated by it, but it may be a more helpful resource for a Believer who already has a grasp on the overarching story of the Bible compared to a newer Believer.
I really appreciated my time in this study. Jen Wilkin teaches how to better understand the imagery of Revelation through an extensive look back through the Old Testament. I walked away from this study encouraged and excited about the future hope we have in Jesus, knowing he will make all things right and all things new.
Jen approaches the book of Revelation symbolically, taking 10 weeks to dive into John's visions and what they mean. While not getting stuck in eschatology land, I appreciated this approach because this book is so full of symbols, numbers, and detailed words. I came out with the knowledge that while this book is daunting and depicts many crazy images, it is a message of eternal hope for believers.
Jen Wilkin always puts together a great study, but I am so glad she tackled this book. She walks you through so many different connections and references, and lets you know that it is ok that we do not have all the answers on what is literal and what is not. I learned a lot and feel very refreshed spiritually.
Truly changed my view of the book of Revelation - what once felt intimidating and a little scary I now see as richly meaningful and beautiful. So thankful for the way Jen Wilkin wrote this study to be incredibly deep and takes into account symbolism found throughout the whole of Scripture. I would recommend this study to every Christian woman!!
This was my first time studying the book of Revelation and Jen’s approach was so helpful. I was eager to do my workbook lessons, discuss with friends, and watch her teaching videos. I loved it!
“Do not weep. Look, the Lion from the trip of Judah, the Root of David, has conquered so that he is able to open the scroll and its seven seals.” Revelation 5:5
1 star for how God used this study to bring a group of over 100 women to study the Word and regularly assess whether they had Jesus as their Lord and Savior.
The second star was for how Jen took the time (and times, and half a time) to cover number symbolism in Revelation and the Bible at large.
The questions really help you to analyze and think through why the numbers of Revelation were used and helps explain the imagery. A good explanation of Revelation and the overall message to the original readers without going into all of the rabbit holes.
