LET ME TELL YOU SOMETHING, LET ME TELL YOU SOMETHING. I never thought I would be giving this book 4 stars.
After reading Book 1, Nero, in this Alliance series by S.J Tilly, I have to say I wasn't entirely impressed. The writing was OK, the pacing was iffy, and sometimes the OTT nature of it all started to feel just extra versus extra delicious.
But King???? OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOh boy. This is a book that took the OTT trope and made it its bitch! It worked so, so, soooooooo well with this couple.
And not only that, the jump in quality between King and Nero was insane. The writing became much better, everything flowed, the character development worked and made sense, even under the aforementioned OTT conditions.
S.J Tilly knocked it outta the park with this one, and this book is the perfect example of how a story like this can work sooooooooo well in fiction. It leans into the campiness and OTT nature, it doesn't take itself seriously until it does, and finds its balance just right. So much fun.
What a ride of tropes this one has too. Arranged/coerced-ish marriage, mafia, OTT/dom MMC, a strong FMC who adapts to her surroundings and you root for, and spicy, spicy, spice.
Very much looking forward to the next one ;)
