Revisit Lyta Hall and her gifted child Daniel in this issue illustrated by Jill Thompson and set in The Dreaming! When Daniel somehow crosses into the dream realm, he encounters familiar faces--and learns secrets no other human knows...
"If I don't talk to an adult soon I'm going to start climbing the wall.".
Truer words have never been uttered in a comic. Especially since I've been basically house bound for the 6th month now, to the extent that 3 months ago I chattered for TEN whole minutes to one of those "Extend your car warranty" people, then confessed to them "I'm so lonely" before telling them my young daughter is a child and does not have a car so please stop calling her number. Loneliness does make people do stupid things.
In which a child, Daniel sleeps, and in his sleep he dreams, and in his dreams, denizens of The Dream tell him stories. Cain tells them about the mystery of a Parliament of Rooks. Eve's story is about Adam's THREE wives. Abel tells a sanitized and very cute version of the Cain and Abel story. Daniel, whom Dream rescued from "gestating" in the Dream time, is not your average child. There will be more of him later, I am sure.
Definitely a shining star in a brilliant galaxy, while I would consider this story a filler issue in between the harrowing arcs of the Sandman series. It is a great story about some of the minor players in Dream's Kingdom. The lightheartedness of this story is a great palate cleanser from the darker impulses offered by the Sandman universe as a whole. I read through this thinking that this would be a great episode of television if Sandman ever saw the light of day as an animated series.
In the Audible Original audio experience, Fables and Reflections actually comes before A Game of You (and also intertwined with Distant Mirrors). To be honest, this is a 3.5 for me. With such a harsh detour from the (main) characters and plot lines, I cannot recall a single thing that happened in this episode. Very dry but still happy to be in the universe overall. Happy to be done with this segment!
Amazing and tragic issue mixed in with a lot of cuteness. Could’ve been better, but idt I fully understand the Parliament of Rooks and what that represents but if I ever reread the series I might appreciate this more.
In this issue, we re-visit the woman and child Morpheus saved from his beasties who escaped the Dreaming when he was captured. Turns out little Daniel has some special gifts.
