What would you do if you found a rare magical animal?

Nico, who has just begun passing as a transgender man, relishes the quiet life working as a bonsai bodyguard. But during a chance encounter one night amidst the aftermath of a territory dispute, he meets ,b>Brant, an excitable, good-natured cookie guard, and the two strike an instant friendship. They form an irresistible bond with Gustopher, a baby gargoyle in need, setting off on a thrilling 3-day adventure to rescue the creature and reunite it with its rightful owner.

As they set out on their mission, the mismatched duo encounter predicaments unusual to new foster parents. Unscrupulous enemies lurk in the shadows, eager to exploit Gustopher on the black market. In order to ensure Gus's safety, Nico and Brant must quickly learn how to nurture (what do gargoyles eat, anyway?) and safeguard their newfound charge. Fortunately, their journey leads them to Remi the vampire, an eccentric cheese guard from Wisconsin, and Jasper, a seasoned traveler, who faithfully follows the renowned Manley Cup, the cherished trophy of a championship hockey team.

Together, this peculiar quartet must combine their unique talents navigating both gargoyle-raising and crime-boss hunting. As they traverse the mountain metropolis of Multnomah, their hidden secrets come to light, forging unbreakable bonds and solidifying their motley chosen family. And in the midst of it all, Gustopher surprises them with delightful…qualities, adding an extra dose of astonishment everywhere they go.

I've loved literature since my mom first read me Edgar Allen Poe's 'The Raven' when I was 13.
I devoured poetry, short stories and novels from then into adulthood, and had many different kinds of jobs, leading me to write my first novel in 2013.

then, 10 years later, I released Book 1 of a cozy adventure trilogy. Guarding Gus released in October 2023, and What to Suspect When You're Suspecting releases in Fall of 2024.

We will see what happens after this!

I had the absolute pleasure of receiving thr ARC for Guarding Gus. It's a cozy, found family , fantasy with LGBTQ characters and positive masculinity.

I really found this story so endearing.  Nico, Brant, Gus, Remi, and Jasper are all such interesting characters who bring a smile to my face. Though I do believe my favorite character was "The hockey team", they just always made me laugh.

I thought there was great world building in this low fantasy world. The way things unravel to Nico is a very natural [although overwhelming I'm sure if you're actually experiencing it] way.

My only thought is that the books two short 😅 I could've read about this groups antics for several more hours. I look forward to the nextbook hinted at, at the end of the book!

Yeah, here's the thing. It's not a best seller yet until you buy it. But then it will be.
I wrote it, so what do you think I'm going to say? :P
I don't think it's perfect. But it's the pinnacle of the word "palette-cleanser".

Disclaimer: I had the opportunity to beta read this book prior to publication, so please note that this review is based off of a prior draft and my notes were addressed.

Overall, I found this to be a short, sweet, cozy fantasy read with heartwarming characters and low stakes. If you're looking for a feel-good fantasy that won't have you hung up on info dumpy, eyes-glazing-over world building, then this read is for you.

Things I loved about this story:
- Gus is the cutest thing in the entire world. He had me in a suspended state of ovulation the entire time.
- Remi, the vampire, is charming and silly. His light-hearted approach to life was the cherry on top of this sweet ragtag bunch.
- It's giving 3 Men and a Baby vibes. Being a mother, myself, my sense of humor these days is men-trying-to-figure-out-what-to-do-with-a-baby.

Things that I had feedback on:
- Some plots points felt rushed and needed fleshing out.
- At times the world building was unclear; the story can be classified as magical realism, but my primary questions revolved around whether the MC's were aware of this or not.
- Without spoiling anything, characters would join the group at points throughout the story, but it was unclear why everyone decided to tag along.

Guarding Gus is releasing just in time for cold, cozy months, ready to be read in an afternoon by the fire with a cup of tea in hand. It's cozy, it's sweet, and it'll leave you feeling warm and fuzzy inside.

Guarding Gus is a heartwarming contemporary fantasy that reminds me of the old movie Three Men and a Baby. The story follows the journey of three strangers: Nico (a transgender man), Brant (an ex-military baking enthusiast), and Remi (a vampire). They soon find themselves unexpectedly taking on the role of foster parents to an adorable baby gargoyle named Gustopher. What follows is an adventure that showcases the power of friendship and unconventional families.

The story captures the essence of positive masculinity, portraying the endearing dynamic of three men dedicated to nurturing and protecting their newfound charge. The author's commitment to inclusivity and representation shines through, evident in the nuanced portrayal of Nico's transgender experience, and the thoughtful inclusion of several sensitivity readers. The heart of the story lies in the tender moments shared among the characters, underscored by their individual complexities and hidden depths.

With its delightful blend of fantasy and humor, this book is a delightful addition to the genre. Thank you to the author for the eARC. This is an honest review.

So when I first saw this audio I thought it looked super cute from the blurb and the cover was cute. It mentions it’s written for adults but can be enjoyed by teenagers which isn’t a bad thing. Just thinking there’ll be no sex. Makes sense. But no. To me this was written for middle schoolers. Not even teenagers. It read super young and silly instead of cute. I can imagine a 10-year-old absolutely loving this though. I was also completely turned off by the “review” the author has left for their own book. Quite rude in my opinion (see if you can find it, almost made me return the audio before listening, would have if I didn’t actually pay for it). Also in the acknowledgments at the end the author thanks people for contributing to their fundraiser (was it for this book?? Just made me question the author even more). Overall I wouldn’t recommend this unless you’re 10 or want a super juvenile story.

This was a fun read. Honestly, there were some things that annoyed me in the beginning, but they actually turned out to be part of the whole plot, so all my annoyances disappeared! And I'm saying it that way because I don't want to give that part of the plot any spoilers haha.

Overall, the story was a lot of fun. I really enjoyed all the characters, Nico and Brandt were super cute, and Gus was adorable. The setting was well done, and I really liked the information at the end that showed the research that went into writing the story. Also, I want to try the recipe included at the end haha. It was a nice quick read, not heavy on romance or anything like that, but really good representation throughout.

The reason its not quite a 5 star for me, is that I wish there were parts of the story that were a bit more flushed out. I am looking forward to the next installment of this story!

And yes, I did arc read this book, but all the opinions are mine.

This was such a cute book! This is being marketed as a cozy adventure and it delivers. This is not a romance book which it doesn't claim to be. This is a found family cozy adventure with some magical creatures. This was the perfect palette cleanser in-between my darker reads and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a sweet quick read.
This book focuses on Nico who is a transgender man who is a Bonzi bodyguard and Brant a veteran who is trying to open his own cookie food truck. One night while they are out separately, they hear a shoot-out between waring territory/gangs and run to investigate or provide aid, if necessary, which is how they meet. While there are no reported deaths/injuries at the time they find strapped into a car seat what they believe to be a baby gargoyle (called Gustopher/Gus) even though they have never seen one before (monsters had one recently come out to the world). They decide to work together to get the baby to safety and regroup. But these bumbling men while they have fallen in love with the baby have absolutely no idea what to do with a human baby let alone a baby monster who they didn't even know existed. Which leads to such cute moments in their adventures who along the way their group grows and grows to even a vampire named Remi and even some Hockey players. But amidst their rag tag group adventures there is a growing worry about who may have originally owned Gus and if should go back to him.

✨ Not to be dramatic - but I would go to battle for Gus! ✨

What do a bonsai bodyguard, a cookie guard, a sassy vampire, a cheese guard and a “Manly Cup” championship hockey team have in common? Love for Gustopher the adorable baby gargoyle of course!

Nico and Brant are ordinary guys living ordinary lives…until one unbelievable night brings them together and changes their lives forever. When gunfire erupts on a nearby street both Nico and Brant (strangers) race to the scene and make the discovery of a lifetime! Sitting in an abandoned car and buckled into a car seat is an adorable baby gargoyle! Instantly forming a bond with the lovable creature they pledge to help reunite Gus with his owners. Setting them off on a hilarious adventure with the help of friends who become family along the way!

Guarding Gus is absolutely charming and wickedly cozy! I was drawn in by the adorable cover and stayed for the fantastic read full of found family, love, adventure, fantastical world building, romance, laughter, self-love, character growth, witty dialog and of course - all of the adorable Gus content! 10/10 recommend this feel-good cozy fantasy!

Thank you Karryn Nagel for the ARC!

Guarding Gus was such an adorable read. As a mum i loved every little thing about Gus..
It was easy to read and had its adventures moments, but over all it was very realistic situations.
Be aware of cuteness overload from little Gustopher. Book has its surprises by the end and is very sweet to know adventures are not over yet. Love that the book has additional information at the end. Like pronunciation , some historical information and delicious recipe.

The story of three men, a cup-wielding hockey team and a baby gargoyle is incredibly heartwarming and cute. There is not a single main character I don’t love - we get great insights into the lives and motivations of Nico, Brant and Remi, and also learn a lot about Jasper and his team … and of course little Gustopher! This is a short cozy fun book that does a great job of pulling you into this universe and making you want to know more - which makes me excited for the next book!

Guarding Gus is a hilarious Cozy tale of three men (and maybe a few more on the way) attempting to take care of a baby... who happens to be a gargoyle. none of them know what they're doing, and little Gus is, well, quite the handful! If you are a fan of Cursed Cocktails, or Legends and Latte's, this is a book you have to read! How could you refuse to when Gustopher is literally just the cutest?

This book has made me laugh more than a few times, with hilarious situations and an even funnier crew. Gus is easily the cutest little character, though i cannot deny Brant, whose cooking and crochet hobbies immediately made me feel seen. with a delightful humor, and a lot of poking fun at toxic masculinity I was entertained the entire way through. This is definitely going to be a go to comfort read for me, for years to come.

My only complaint about this book is that it was not long enough. I loved this story so much from the intro where characters from the story left reviews of the book to the dedication honoring healthy men and positive masculinity to the story itself. Brant, Nico, and baby Gus become such a wonderful family who have my whole heart.

From the moment I received a description of this book, I was completely hooked. Part of me worried the cozy vibes might turn out to be cheesy, but that was certainly not the case. This story was well written and thoroughly enjoyable - both heartwarming and funny with enough suspense to keep you engaged in the plot.

One note on the romance subplot: it is very subtle and doesn’t really develop until the very end. If you’re looking for an overt queer romance this might not be the book to satisfy that desire. However, it does have overt trans representation.

This cozy story made me feel like I was watching a 90s-early 2000s Disney channel halloween movie with a whirlwind adventure taking our main characters all around town on their quest.... but with an aged up vibe. I loved Gus and the found family he created. I cannot wait for more Gustopher adventures

I had no idea what to expect when I received this book as an ARC read, but I was so thrilled to go on the journey with Nico, Brant, and Gus!

It was such a fun and cute adventure with lovable characters and a pretty good story. The only thing I was disappointed with was the length, but I’m hoping to read more about Gus in the future!

This was an adorable read! I've been reading quite heavy, dark books and this was like a breath of fresh air! My first time reading this author, I didn't know that to expect. The last thing I expected was a beautifully written, extremely comical, hidden message type of read. Well written? Oh yes, so well written I delighted in the words and story before me. Extremely comical? Well yeah, I ugly snort laughed so much through this book I was embarrassed for ME! Hidden message? Sure, although I do tend to over dissect prose....but a thread of acceptance of oneself is strongly portrayed, a sense of belonging that emerges, found family at it's best!

Now, if I had stumbled onto a baby gargoyle, I'm sure I'd be just as gobsmacked as Nico, they AREN'T real, right? Appears I am wrong, gargoyles definitely exist! Together with a very gregarious and vibrant stranger, they stumble onto this sweetness. And , somehow, Nico is cajoled into taking responsibility for the baby. Well, not much cajoling was necessary, Gustophor is the cutest little gargoyle ever, who immediately casts a "spell" on both Nico and Brant, not a SPELL spell, but a "aww, cuteness, I wanna care for you" spell, that both fell in love instantly. Or perhaps it WAS a real spell, one I've fallen under. Heck, I fell in love instantly....the author couldn't have described a more adorable creature! I mean, have you SEEN the image on the cover????

I really enjoyed the easy manner the author penned this gorgeous tale, I didn't even realise I was giggling out loud until my husband started giving the strange "what?" looks. You will too when you read how Nico and Brant try to discover the gender of the gargoyle. I sunk into this story effortlessly, loving everything about it. I loved how different Nico and Brant are, Nico is a "think before you leap" kinda guy and Brant is a "heck let's just jump off the cliff for fun" kinda guy, chalk and cheese... Nico is a trans who has a thing for gardens and Brant is ex army with a fetish for baking, yep, baking! I swear I could smell the mouthwatering smells emanating from the book! But there's more...as they're trying to find Gus' "rightful" owner, a Mafia type persona, they encounter Remi, a vampire, who's just as amusingly cool as Nico and Brant. Mistrustful at first, all 3 have secrets and issues and the ease with which they bonded, the unconditional acceptance of the other, felt so natural, 3 tough guys who were so tender on the inside, much like an Oreo, all sweet and mushy. The introduction of the hockey team, who are hellbent on helping the mismatched trio reach their goal, was comically delightful. Seems our little gargoyle has a lot of "players" on his side...😜 I'm definitely on his side, whether he "magiced" me or not! And the author has likewise cast a spell on me, I have NO option but to get to the next book as quickly as possible! Read it! You'll be as delighted as I was! And I want a gargoyle!!!!

"Guarding Gus" by Karryn Nagel marks the charming beginning of a cozy fantasy series. It delves into the early adventures of Gustopher, an endearing baby gargoyle, and his newfound group of unconventional protectors. Through their misadventures, they discover profound lessons about self-discovery, honesty, and the true meaning of unconditional love.

Who would have imagined that a Bonsai bodyguard, a former military member turned cookie crafter, a Victorian-esque vampire, and an entire hockey team (celebrated as defenders of the prestigious 'Manly Cup') could unite in a common mission to save a magical and mythical baby gargoyle?

This family-friendly read tactfully addresses LGBTQ+ challenges and the subtleties of toxic masculinity. Amid their misadventures, the narrative sparkles with witty exchanges, relatable trials, and enough action to keep you eagerly perched on the edge of your seat. You'll find yourself rooting wholeheartedly for the underdogs in their quest to outsmart Gus' unscrupulous captors.

While the timestamp format and occasional reference to "Toys R Us" might require a brief adjustment, these are minor distractions in an otherwise engrossing tale. "Guarding Gus" is precisely the kind of feel-good adventure that invites you to curl up by a cozy fire and spend a leisurely afternoon with.

The author has woven several delightful Easter eggs throughout the story, including a treasure map of the places visited in the book, corresponding to real-world locations, a genuine recipe, bonsai care tips, intriguing historical tidbits, and even guidance on names and pronunciation.

In conclusion, I enthusiastically grant this book a rating of nine out of ten. It comes highly recommended for anyone seeking a captivating start to a cozy fantasy adventure series. I eagerly await the forthcoming escapades of Gus and his newfound companions!

I extend my heartfelt gratitude to Karryn Nagel for the opportunity to explore this endearing mini-saga through an ARC. You've undoubtedly secured a place on my radar, and I eagerly anticipate further exploration of your literary offerings!

From page 1, I was laughing out loud and making my dog think I'd finally gone around the bend. Really. This is the third paragraph:
Nico and the stranger took cover about eight feet away from the hardware store entrance behind a city trash can.
The stranger, crouching down beside Nico, turned to him with a huge grin on his face, his eyes vivid green from the adrenaline. "You know what I said to myself this morning?" he said, somehow managing to sound soft but quite friendly. His voice had a tenor tone with a slight rasp. He continues on, "I said to myself, 'Self, what this afternoon really needs is a good old-fashioned shoot-out in the middle of the street' What is this, the Wild, Wild West? Ridiculous."

As more characters seem to magically join them, the book just gets zanier. I especially loved how such wildly different characters fit together like pieces of a puzzle. The cautious, quiet, trans man Nico. The outgoing  boisterous ex-military Brant. The secretive, cheese-loving vampire Remi. The overzealous caretaker for the "Manley Cup". The popular winning goalie and the rest of the hockey team. And of course Gus, who the guys immediately identify as a baby gargoyle, even though they admit no one had ever seen a baby gargoyle. The only thing all the guys have in common is that they're all guards of one sort or another.

There are so many surprises throughout this hilarious book that I can't wait to get the next book in the series.  This book finishes nicely, no cliffhangers. But it is so fun and exciting I can't wait to grab the next in the series.
Be sure to read all the front and back matter, too. Lots of fun tidbits, book reviews as written by various characters, a treasure hunt map to real places in Portland Oregon, a recipe, the opening scene for the next book, and more.

Fair disclosure up front here, I've only read the first five chapters, as I'm still waiting for my local library to pick this book up, but I got to read a little "shareware demo" of the book on my podcast!

Especially with that in mind, though, this book is a delight! Gus is an absolute charmer, and written to be so, too! It's no small wonder that's who is on the cover. Don't let that scare you off from the other main characters, though! Brant and Nico make a fantastic unlikely duo in keeping track of the little dude, with each of them bringing their unique experiences to bear in handling the adventure before them.
Brant's a guy after my own heart, a military vet who's now trying to get a small bakery food truck off the ground, who also has a penchant for picking up projects when he's stressed. (Bet we could chat about the carpentry of those kitchen cabinets, or a sourdough recipe!)
Nico, on the other hand, balances out the whole vibe of the group fantastically! A trans man, with all the baggage that can cause, especially coming out of a Latine family, he's much more of an introvert, seemingly often more happy around his bonsai trees than people, in the day to day.
The first five chapters set up a real high-flying tale, though with how much they both like Gus, it's unlikely to turn out to be the reverse-heist I initially guessed it'd be when I first heard the synopsis of what was then Bonsai Bodyguard. Hopefully sooner rather than later I can actually, properly finish this book off, and meet this Remi I've been hearing so much about!

This is probably one of the cutest stories I've ever read, sure it descends into the most crazy of situations but it's a book I never knew just how much I needed in my life until I picked it up. The theme of acceptance, loyalty and found family run deep in this short tale, and it left its mark well after I turned the last page. It's a cozy, low stakes read with a great balance of humor that had me giggling out loud. I also loved the extras at the back of the book, which included a recipe (that I definitely want to try), interesting facts and discussion questions for book clubs plus a few other things. Yep, ive totally fallen for Gus and he has made me want a baby gargoyle all of my own.

The characters were immensely likeable and all very different from each other but it works, each of them bringing something to the table. You have the introverted Nico, a trans man who doesn't socialize much and trying to find his place in the world. The sunshiny ex military man Brant, who as outgoing as Nico is shy. And Remi, a vampire who has a flair for the dramatic and sense of adventure, who definitely seems to know more about the baby gargoyle than he let's on. And we can't forget about Gus, the cutest lil gargoyle in the world who has a way of melting the hearts of everyone around him.

The twist at the end was just fantastic and one that I didn't see coming but had me smiling with delight, which has guaranteed me to pick up the next book as I want more. Highly recommend 😁

This was a really charming and fun read. I was hooked right away, which can be difficult with stories like this where you’re learning alongside the character. (Just a me thing, I find these kinds of starts to be a bit tedious where the main character isn’t up to speed with the rest of the story). But this was genuinely entertaining and FUN from the start so that usual annoyance was actually handled well and I found it charming. Once I started reading it, I breezed right through it. It was a great book to get me out of my reading funk I've been experiencing recently.
There was just enough humor to keep things lively. And honestly, I would go to battle for the baby gargoyle, Gus. The little found family in this is perfect if you love that cozy trope.

I was really impressed with the characters in this book and the genuinely sweet love they have for one another. The author clearly took the time to really explore what toxic masculinity is, and then did the opposite. It was really refreshing to read.

Overall, this is like a warm cozy hug, with enough suspense to keep you wanting more. Thank you for the opportunity to ARC read this fun adventure!

Guarding Gus was a sweet and funny read. I appreciated the diversity of Gus’ “guardians” and the positive way they interacted with one another. Even when there were challenges building trust, they worked through them as a group, (with a little help from the clever and adorable Gus).

I did wish for a better understanding of the world in which we find Gustopher, Nico, Brant, Remi & friends, because it is both realistic and magical, with the inclusion of mythical creatures, like Gus and Remi, (who is a vampire), but little is explained about why they are the only two non-human creatures we encounter in this world, and why other citizens are shocked and surprised at their existence, but also aware of them.

In terms of pacing, the story felt a bit rushed for me in some places, especially with the insta-friendship and bonding between characters, but the reason for this, at least in part, is explained in the story and I won’t spoil that aspect.

If you are looking for a light-hearted, comical yet cozy read that embraces diverse characters that come from different backgrounds and bond through shared experiences and adventure, you’ll find it in Guarding Gus. You’ll even come away with some ice hockey knowledge, an appreciation for the art of bonsai tree trimming, and a delicious recipe for Parmesan-Herb (rosemary) Madeleines, which I am definitely going to make.

This is a warm hug of a story! It's nice to read a cosy, knowing that world-ending stakes aren't driving the narrative and the characters most often like each other.

Ms Nagel has crafted a beautiful tale with a diverse array of characters, a wonderful chosen family vibe and some gorgeous magic. I appreciated the level of acceptance between the men and the absolute lack of toxic machismo.

I enjoyed the style of writing too. Crisp with great pacing and vivid but not overdone descriptions, creating a reading experience that quickly immersed me fully in the world.

There was a real surprise at the end and hints dropped by one of the main characters that mean I NEED to read the next in the series right now!!

***there is no romance/spice in this 166 page book. There is LGBTIQA+ rep and lots of positive masculinity. The author rates it as suitable for 13+ readers***

I listened to the audiobook version of GUARDING GUS and it was absolutely a delight! I fell in love with Nico and Brandt right away and loved their story of discovering little Gus the gargoyle in a car seat and deciding to take him in. This story was so cozy and delightful, with wonderful accepting found family themes and excellent world building. I loved all the characters, especially Remy the vampire, and narrator Andre Santana added so much to the story by wonderfully performing the voices. There is nothing better than an amazing story performed by a wonderful narrator, and this was the whole package. This had some wonderful surprises, and I am excited that there is a sequel! 5/5 stars.

Remember that movie 3 men and a baby? Now imagine the baby is a gargoyle and that the 3 men are actually 2 men; a trans body guard and a veteran who’s dream is to bake cookies. That’s the vibe. And I LOVED IT.

The adventures and shenanigans these bumbling guys found themselves in were exciting and hilarious. The way they faced it all together was so endearing and I loved the found family/band of misfits group they assembled all on behalf of keeping little Gus safe.

Such a sweet, fun and cozy read!!!

This book was very different from what I read but it was surprisingly very enjoyable. I loved the friendship between Nico and Brant. I also loved Remi. He was a very interesting guy. This story is about some complete strangers coming together because of a baby gargoyle name Gustopher. I became fascinated by Gus, he’s so adorable. I absolutely recommend this book. 📖Nico likes his quiet life. One day, after finding himself in the middle of a territory dispute, his life suddenly becomes very unquiet. He meets Brant and together they find an abandoned baby gargoyle. They team up on quite the adventure to get the baby back with his rightful owner.

💭This was a super cute cozy fantasy. I liked the found family aspect of the story and how the characters all came together to help Gus. There was a lot of positive masculinity and I liked how the men supported one another. It was nice to read! Plus how adorable is this cover?! Overall, a very fun read.

I really enjoyed this book! It gave Legends & Lattes vibes which shouldn’t surprise me as in the acknowledgements, in the back of the book, I found she had been mentored by Travis Baldree.

I love the idea of two strangers unwittingly becoming foster dads of an adorable baby gargoyle. Gus was extremely cute and made me want to cuddle up to my own little gargoyle - Graham.

Remi was my favourite character. I liked that he knew the answers but also that an experience is about living through something instead of getting the correct answer first time.

I cannot wait to read more!

This was a delight to read. I stumbled across the author on TikTok and loved the premise of this book and the reasons behind it.

This is an easy, quick read that is heartwarming and fun. The characters are likable and the fast paced friendships are explained in such a unique and creative way. I loved all of the side characters and mini adventures throughout the book.

Gus is truly adorable and I think we’d all go to battle to guard him.

Definitely worth picking up when you need a palette cleanser read.

Definitely a cozy fantasy as the title says. There is a lot packed into this short easy read. A baby gargoyle, found family, a little quest, a baby gargoyle, a little magic, acceptance of self and others, and a little twist at the end. But the main reason I chose this books is there's a freaking BABY GARGOYLE! I was completely invested in the characters and I'm looking forward to reading book 2. If you're not one for reading middle school books, this probably isn't the book for you. If you want something easy and fun, I highly recommend Guarding Gus.
