Of Vines and Rivals

Rate this book
Please Note: Of Vines and Rivals can be read as a standalone, but the following blurb does contain spoilers for Of Ice and Heartbreak (the first book in the series)

Puck
I spent four hundred years magically controlled by an evil queen. Four hundred years forced to do despicable things at her behest, until I finally broke free and took my vengeance. Now, all I want is to be king and restore my court to its former glory.
The only thing standing in my way is her.

Lysandra
He killed my mother.
I spent my entire life hidden in the mortal realm with my human father because my mother suspected she had enemies. She was supposed to bring me to Faerie and train me to be queen until Puck staged a coup and cut off her head.
When I arrive in Faerie, ready to claim my throne, the other monarchs decide to hold a trial to see which of us will reign. Three trials. One victor.
I’ve trained for this, but I didn’t expect the undeniable attraction to my rival. And no matter how hard I try, I can’t seem to stay away from him.

Marianne A. Scott has been writing since she was a kid. When she was always singing, those stories appeared in song form, when she majored in acting, they appeared as screenplays, but novels and short stories were what she returned to when inspiration struck. Each and every story was driven by characters and love, and, most of the time, the hope that there was something fantastical about this world that us humans just haven't discovered yet.

When not writing, you can find her with her Kindle and a latte, sitting opposite her husband in their New Jersey home. In her other life, she teaches tiny humans how to sing, passing along her love of musical theater to the next generation.

Received this as an ARC. 📚
I really enjoyed the pace of this book and seeing the progression of the characters. Lysandra and Puck are figuring out who they are now that they are able to make their own life choices. There is trials, enemies to lovers, and a great deal of spice. 🌶️🌶️🌶️

I have all the feelings! Puck truly deserved his happy ending and this story totally provided that. Lysandra and Puck have an incredible journey, I was enchanted by the story!

In the hard parts of the story I could feel the pain and heartbreak like my own! And in the best parts I swooned with happiness!

Beautiful story, totally recommend it, I truly would love to read the love stories of the rest of the heirs!

Also can we please have extended epilogues like in book 1! Loved those!

I’m so invested in the world Marianne has created between the Made from Magic series to this side series, The Fae Romance standalones.

I love the concept of finding love after a rejected mate bond. (Which initially I was hesitant about). The first book we see how Edina finds love after her rejected bond from Puck. Here we get Pucks story. Going into this I wasn’t crazy about Puck but Marianne did such a great job humanizing him and making him relatable.

These series is so good when your in need of a low stakes spicy romance. It’s such a fun time between the plot, the banter, and the romance.

So grateful to be able to read this ARC and I can’t wait to see where the rest of the series goes 🥰

My first ever E-ARC and it was amazing! Plus size 28 year old FMC. Rivals to loves, quests, found family. The tension, the angst, the hate sex ohhh this book was just perfect 👌 literally everything I want in a romantasy book. Pucks character growth from the 1st book (Of ice and heartbreak) was amazing. It was so wholesome to see his relationship with Edina grow into something so beautiful 😍 can't compliment this book enough will 100% be buying it when its released.

Had the best time and enjoyed reading this. Like a much spicer ACOTAR with trials.
(You could read this as a standalone... apparently I've read the first book I just didn't remember lol)

Wow, just wow! Marianne A Scott has done it again with Of Vines and Rivals!

I knew going in that I would love this book! I mean, who doesn’t love Puck and his shenanigans 😂
I was NOT disappointed in the least. I was sucked in from the first page and promptly devoured this book.

Although Puck can be a snarky witty prankster; I have to say, I really really enjoyed seeing the softer, lovable side of him. I don’t begrudge him for being an ass, at times, to Lysandra. He was simply fighting for what he believed in. The angst and tension between Lysandra and puck was palpable. But, when you get there, oh my Goddess! Scott really knows her way around some very inventive smexy scenes!

If you love Fae, enemies/rivals to lovers, forced proximity, found family and spice 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️; you will absolutely adore this book!! Wait, did I mention there’s vine play involved? 🥵🥵

This is book 2 in her Fae Romance series of standalones

I absolutely adore the world and characters Marianne has created! I didn't think I would love any characters as much as I loved the OGs, but I was proven wrong. Puck and Lysandra now have a place in my heart ❤️

Marianne does a great job at giving us men who, despite having their own issues, are not toxic and who aren't afraid of showing emotion. Puck had gone through a really dark time and the fact that he pursued help and recognized the need for it, was A+++.

The women in this world are badass and go after what they want. Lysandra is no different and I really enjoyed her balance of soft and hard.

And the spice.. .🥵🥵🥵

The story may have been a little predictable, but it didn't make it any less enjoyable. I tore through it and enjoyed every second!

ARC
So I was very lucky and was able to have an ARC of this amazing book ! So if you have read her other works you know this story is about Puck . Let me tell you know you may hate him but by the end your heart is ripped into pieces and put back together again and is all mushy ! I absolutely adored this book, it’s so well written I forgot I was reading a book ! I can literally picture some of the scenes. And the smut (hot damn!) the title alone shall give you a few hints *vines* seeing as puck has earth magic and can do pretty sexy things with vines… yeah let your imagination go wild because HOLY COW I was not expecting that but loved every second !! Go read this now ! You will not be disappointed!!

Received an ARC copy to review this book and OMG!

I loved the tension between these two. As someone who’s fairly new to fae romance books, I enjoyed the spice. I love how the author gives a history on the characters background, in case you didn’t read the first book (which I now plan to read). I loved the HEA though I was expecting a more different (the obvious) ending. I enjoyed this book and am excited to read the previous book (and hopefully next one) soon!!

Oh my gosh. I don’t know what Marianne puts in her books, but she put something cause oh my goodness. I swear every time she writes a book I’m like oh this one’s now my favorite because this book deserves all the stars. I will say when I first picked it up I wasn’t sure how much I was going to like it. But like I said, I do think this is now my favorite. The smut is top-tier. All of the banter was also fantastic and I loved seeing a new character getting introduced to Katie and that old group.

So basically, in this book, we find out that the queen of the spring court did in fact have a child but hit her on earth. And of course our favorite vampire comes to our house and he’s like “yo Your mom was murdered. We need to start training you so you can become queen.” I really liked the trial. I wasn’t sure how it was going to go but I thought it was really well done. There were some things that I didn’t love with this book like the miscommunication and honestly the big overarching plot could have been solved much earlier on, but I also like what happened at the end.

I’m so glad that we got to see more of Kaite‘s life because that was some thing that I really feel like we missed out with the first book. I will say the whole time between the Fea world and the mortal world still confuses me but that’s fine.

Loved the story between Puck and Lysandra. The story takes us through 3 trials that the two need to compete in, in order to take control of Spring Court. But can they deny the lust for each other while both competing for leadership? I guess you’ll have to read it to find out. lol Oh and did I mention vine play? Didn’t think I’d be adding that to my list of kinks but here we are. Hahahah! Seriously tho great job Marianne. This author knows how to handle trauma with a character and I love how she moves them through it with realistic emotions. ❤️❤️

5/5 ⭐ 4/5 🌶️

This series and this world just keeps getting better and better! I was so excited for Puck to get his happily ever after and this book delivered 🥰 I am left feeling so happy at the end and fulfilled by the story.

While this could be read as a standalone, there are lots of references to things that happened in the first book, and to truly understand the significance of Puck's story, I would strongly suggest reading the first book.

This is a great enemies to lovers, where they have to fight for the crown. Puck killed the evil queen who enslaved him for centuries, but Lysandra is the Queen's daughter no one knew about who has come to claim her birthright. They could never work, right?! The flirty banter and outright disdain were perfect and of course it turned into more. The way they fought the attraction yet couldn't stay away... The way Puck was jealous... The way Lysandra knew how to push his buttons... All perfection. And did I mention it is full of good spice?! Vine bondage anyone 😏

The growth they had with each other, and because of each other was great too. Puck was trying to prove he was worthy and he belonged in the spring court as king. Lysandra wanted to finally see the world she was born of but never knew, seeing how she could fit into a new life. They were like magnets, pushing and pulling, challenging yet accepting.

And I loved that Lysandra was a real woman with curves! She did have a normal amount of acknowledgement that she wasn't thin, but there wasn't the usual embarrassment/shame of her body, or a huge hang up about it in the plot which I adored!!! Not to mention Puck makes a point to let her know how much he loves her body... He never actually mentions her size, he always just expressed his appreciation and fondness for her appearance, but never even said he loved her curves or brought it up at all really, it was just her body 👏

We also get more of the characters we have come to love. I adored Edina in this book and the relationship she had with Puck. They might have rejected their mate bond, but they still love each other platonically, and share a strong bond.

Another amazing romantasy story by Marianne!!!!

REVIEW: “Of Vines and Rivals” by Marianne A. Scott

"None of that was my fault. I was simply the instigator. The match that lit the fuse.”

I was sent an ARC for this book for free in exchange for an honest review. I was drawn to this book by the cover, but the story kept me there. I loved it!

I loved this story. It had everything I love in a book – beautiful cover, a map (you know it’s one of my favourite things), great world-building, compelling storytelling, and enjoyable and fun characters.

Puck and Lysandra’s battles for the crown, the way they navigate their sense of competition and their desires (for the crown and for each other), was compelling and so much fun to read. The story is beautiful, and happy, but also heartbreaking. The will-they-won’t-they-ness of it all and the Puck’s battle with himself and his past had me in tears in some parts, while other parts had me laughing. It was a real rollercoaster!

I loved all of the characters, they all had their eccentricities that made them all unique and enjoyable to read about.

This is book two of a series but can be read as a standalone. It does have spoilers for book one, but I honestly don’t think that spoils it all really. However, if you can read “Of Ice and Heartbreak” first it might be a good idea 😊

Look after yourselves and stay awesome!

Jade x

This book pulled all kinds of feelings out of me, and I loved 🥰 every moment of it! There is such intensity between Lysandra and Puck, and they dance 💃🏼 all over the emotional map. They bounce from sheer hatred to consuming lust to weary caution to heartfelt tender moments and then back to hatred again. And it’s a deliciously wild ride.

They are seeking claim to the same thing: the throne to the Spring Court. Puck has been serving as the interim king 👑 , and Lysandra is the untested blood 🩸heir. Who will rule the monarchy will be determined through a series of trials. And in the meantime, they’ll have to work together in overseeing the Spring Court.

The back story of who Lysandra’s mother is, and how her mother secretly controlled, brutalized, and abused Puck for centuries sets the painful and heartbreaking 💔 component that serves as the massive chasm that Puck cannot escape. I absolutely shed some tears the more I understood the depth of Puck’s abuse, and the lasting impact of it. He cannot separate Lysandra from who her mother is.

Despite the emotional pain and distrust of each other, these two run HOT 🥵 together 😮‍💨. It’s the magnet 🧲 that has them colliding over and over. Inevitably, they each must work through the genuine feelings taking root and deciding how far they’ll go, and what they’ll sacrifice for love ❤️.

~ Enemies/Rivals to Lovers

✨ My Thoughts ✨
Ummm this was absolutely addicting. I couldn't stop once it started. I enjoyed the trail aspect of the book. Each trail was really cool to read. I loved being back in the world and reading about these two characters. I loved getting some more background on Puck. His background was so sad but seeing work through those things was great to read. Lysandra was a great FMC. Seeing her learn about where she came from was cool. The banter between these two characters was one of my favorites. The tension and spice was just chefs kiss. I enjoyed seeing other characters from book one. This book flowed so well. I couldn't get enough. I am excited for the rest of this series. I can't recommend this one enough for my fantasy romance lovers.

Of Vines and Rivals is book two in The Fae Romance novels. It is standalone. But I definitely recommend reading book one first. I recommend doing so because it was really good and it gives a bit of background. This book is recommended for 18+. As always please check TW before reading. This book is out now.

✨ I want to thank Marianne for this earc. These are my own true thoughts. ✨

To date, I have read ALL of her books, getting hooked in 2021 on Made from Magic (Katie's Story). Lowell is still my favorite of her book boyfriends.

I love being a part of her ARC team and I am one of her biggest cheerleaders. She is a great writer, taking you to the Magic/Fae world with consistent, thorough descriptions of EVERYTHING.

We got pretty spicy in this one, which I also like. Because trauma recovery is part of my own writing - as well as coming out of isolation into community - I am super happy with how she wove that into this story.

Puck and Lysandra have SPARKLING chemistry from the get go and I love how it all comes together at the end (NO SPOILERS!)

I love how she is both wrapping up loose ends from other stories, incorporating characters from the entire world she has built and intriguing us with new characters you will want to see more of!

Great job on this book, this installment I should say and keep it up! Love reading what you write and definitely count me in for all the promos!

Puck…where to begin! In the first book I disliked him until it was clear that he was under a curse. Then I hoped he would get a redemption arc. And he got one. And oh boy…what a ride that arc was! Not just because it was full of hot spicy scenes but also because the way he changed and tried to overcome his trauma in the end…the author really made me root for him! When he didn‘t win in the end and Lysandra shattered his heart? My heart broke too. I don‘t know if I could have stayed as wonderfully loving as he did!

As for Lysandra…well I found her a tad annoying sometimes. A tad too bratty and entitled tbh. A bit too much Titania. I know that she has trauma herself and I hope that in a sidenote in the next book (which I will devour of course) we will get to see that she finally has accepted she has and is getting treatment for too!

I love the authors version of faerie! And her openness of „you know what“ is amazing! Although I shouldn‘t read the spicy scenes during a train ride next to a nosy stranger next time 🤷🏼‍♀️

Of Vines and Rivals is a fantasy romance novel set in the Spring Court of the Faerie Realm. It follows our two main characters - Puck and Lysandra - in a duel Pov as they embark on a mission to secure the crown. Their rivalry is beautiful, messy, and everything in between.
I loved the dynamics between the main group competing. Marianne did such an impressive job making sure that the secondary characters don’t fall flat and just exist for the plot. They were fun, entertaining, and all had their own unique abilities. One thing for fellow readers to consider is that while the general world of the book is similar to the Folk of the Air series, some twists are more predictable. But with this book, the style works so well because it adds to the tension our main characters are going through. This writing choice helps keep readers feeling connected to the plot and personally I wouldn’t prefer it written any other way!
I would recommend this book to anyone who loves a good fantasy read that is easy to follow and has lots of spice that goes along with the story.

My Word what a follow up!!
I was equally Team Puck to Team Eldoris a few times in “Of Ice and Heartbreak”
To get the story of Puck out and Lysandra added in was MAGIC.
Hot, Adventurous and definitly more of what I did not even know I wanted.

I wanted to skip to the end more than once to make sure it has a great ending but I curbed it and sweated trough although every word and page was truly worth it!

Im hoping there will be more in this World Of Magic with our now Faye, Witches, Vampires and Werewolf family.

Getting an easy 5 * from me!!!
💋💋💋💋💋... romance and friendships
🌶🌶🌶🌶🌶… spicy!!

❤️‍🔥🧨❤️‍🔥 HOT

I didn’t think it was possible to like a book more than I liked the first one (of ice and heartbreak) but somehow I do! I’m struggling to find the words to explain why but I’ll give it a go…

I often want to live in the fantasy realms of the books I read but I don’t think I’ve ever wanted to live in a place more than I do Faerie, it really does sound amazing. Not only a gorgeous landscape but it’s full of people/creatures that are all open minded and live among each other in relative peace.
I’ve never really understood the whole book boyfriend thing but I can officially say I now have my first. Hands off ladies, Puck is mine!!

This book had me laughing, it had me angry, it had me sad and it had me…..😉🥵
It has enemies to lovers, rivals, found family, emotional trauma.

Marianne has quickly jumped onto my list of authors who I will read anything from. She deserves way more recognition!!

This is book 2 in this series and spin off the Made from Magic series so there are some character crossovers but nothing that will spoil any of the stories if haven’t read them (although I personally highly recommend that your do).

This story is about Puck. We meet him in book one as he rejected his mate bond with Edina. He is the “villain” in her story. This book is about him and Lysandra. They are completing for the throne of the Spring Court as the former queen was murdered. The former also happens to be Lysandra’s mother. Naturally Puck and Lysandra enemies. However, the tension is hot and yum. Puck has beautifully dirty mouth. Those spicy scenes are everything and more. Puck isn’t likeable at first, but we really get a glimpse into his trauma and healing process.

This book was fantastic and I enjoyed the few cameos of other characters and the character arcs. You won’t regret reading this book.

I had the pleasure of ARC reading this book and it was spicy fun!

I am and have always been a huge Puck fan so this was right up my alley. It was nice to see a more adult side of him though I did miss some of his trickster ways. They weren’t completely gone but not a focal point and for the book that was a good thing.

I really like the concept and overall story. The love hate, the ‘trauma’, the spice, the forever pregnant friend hahaha, it was all well done. The trial was fun too.

The only thing I didn’t like was how quickly the last ‘fight’ was resolved and how quickly the book ended into HEA. I feel like there could have been a bit more there as it felt a bit rushed. Especially after such a big proclamation but it’s still a good story.

Will recommend for a lighter, happier/fluffy kind of spicy fantasy book.

Okay so first off, the flirtatious banter in this book is great. I kinda fell in love with Puck, even though you’re mad at him from book one, Of Ice and Heartbreak. I’m so glad he gets his happily ever after, and the strong relationships he now has with his friends after everything he went through.

Poor Lysandra, she gets thrown into all this and has the shadow of her mother to deal with. But I do like her for how she handles herself. Also, that she is able to create friends when she didn’t really have many growing up.

This is a great enemies to lovers story. When they get together the chemistry is *chefs kiss*. The way Puck speaks to her 🥵. Lets just say Puck has experience and knows what he is doing.

Overall, great story and I can’t wait for more in the series!

I was so excited to return to Fairie and the world that Marianne has created in these books. My heart was so broken for Puck after the previous book and I was anxious to see him get his happy ending. Puck and Lysandra led very different lives but found their homes in each other. Lysandra and Puck's story is a great enemies to lovers adventure. The story is sprinkled with sweet moments and plenty of spice. I didn't think I would love a story more than Edina and Eldoris but this one may just take the lead!! It is impossible to not get completely enthralled in this world, the characters, and the magic throughout. This is just another great read from Marianne Scott and I cannot wait to see what else she has in store.

This is my first E-ARC and Marianne killed it! I couldn’t put it down and read the whole thing in a day 🙈 I loved seeing Puck’s character arc and it was nice to have more of the “smaller” characters in the previous book featured in this one. While this book can definitely be read as a stand alone I definitely recommend reading all of the books in the Made from Magic series as well as Of Ice and Heartbreak first get a better appreciation for the world and some of the characters and to avoid potential spoilers for those books.

Wow I loved this! I read Of Ice and Heartbreak first and it was great to be able to get Puck’s story after everything that happened in the first book. I loved the emotion, the character development, and smut! The world building was really well done and easy to follow which is very appreciated. I can often lose interest if I get confused or overwhelmed with the information being thrown at me but that wasn’t the case here. Overall just an absolute joy to read and I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys the romantasy genre!

Well, I now know more about BDSM than what I ever wanted. Makes me wonder what the author gets into when she writes this stuff. Too graphic for me. The general story wasn’t bad and I wanted Puck to find someone and be happy, have his HEA. Unfortunately the graphic bondage sex just overrode any storyline and just took over the whole thing. Got a kick out of naming the club Tartarus. Tartarus is a pit of darkness and torment even lower than hell and is where the fallen angels are held in punishment until the end.

I received an arc for this book. I love this world, the made series kicked it off and now we are two spin offs in and getting to see glimpses of Katie makes me happy. Puck and Lysandra are a fun dynamic. This book has insta attraction but is not insta love. The trials and getting to see more of the courts was great and I loved how Hades became more of a side character in this one. Lots of spice in this one vs the others. Can’t wait for more in this world!

What can I say, I just love this spin off of the Made From Magic series. I love following along characters we’ve met along the way and see them grown, learn and eventually get their HEA. I love the banter, the spice, the trials, found family, touch her and die. This book kept me engrossed from the beginning. It is a standalone but I encourage you to read the main series and the first stand alone in this spin off Of Ice and Heartbreak.
