Juniper Berry, a thirteen-year-old girl, without options, enters a cloak-and-dagger life—forced to care for herself. She plots a course of retribution. Her plan lands her in a world of intrigues and hazards that threaten to overwhelm the already unstable facts of her identity. Painting a bright picture of a world changed forever by an atrocious act, "Vizard" by Shari Marshall invites us into Juniper Berry’s experience of finding herself and surviving. The book tells the story of Juniper, who is only thirteen and has been placed into an enigmatic life that is full of danger after managing to overcome the cruel treatment she had suffered.

In this new existence, the author writes in an elaborate style about a kill list that is not open to public scrutiny. Amidst dire circumstances where survival seemed impossible, the author presents Juniper as someone seeking revenge against all odds. Her pursuit of self-identity is accompanied by hardships presented in this merciless world.

This narrative is about more than just survival. It also addresses her emotions and challenges. The author discusses Juniper making friends out of necessity, but those friendships evolve into something more meaningful. Juniper has a difficult time because she is caught between two very different lives, making things even more complicated.

Juniper's character is woven in such a way that it feels like you are hearing the story of someone you know. The author writes in a way that makes you care about Juniper, as if she were a friend going through a difficult time. There are plenty of twists to keep you interested, and it seems authentic and emotional.

So, if you want a story that is about a common person encountering tremendous problems as well as fighting, surviving, and overcoming, then this one is a must-read. You'll root for Juniper, experience her ups and downs, and have a great time following her exciting journey.

A riveting experience

From the moment Juniper Berry becomes the lone survivor of a savage attack, the story takes us on a rollercoaster ride through her cloak and dagger existence. Forced to navigate a world teeming with intrigue and hazards, Juniper plots a course of retribution that becomes the driving force behind her every move.
Marshall's writing captures the essence of Juniper's struggle, immersing readers in a world where the noose tightens around enemies, and fate plays a relentless game. What begins as a relationship of necessity evolves into a complex tapestry of conflicting lives, leaving Juniper Berry torn between irreconcilable forces.
The strength of "Vizard" lies not only in its well-paced plot and suspenseful twists but also in Marshall's ability to breathe life into Juniper Berry. The character's journey is a symphony of emotions, making it easy for readers to connect with her resilience and determination.

"Vizard" was a great side story to the Ember Files series. It was a good prequel to develop characters who I look forward to reading in the third book of the series itself, due this year.

A fun premise and story, the writing style is a bit choppy at times so that I would have to reread to understand what just happened as it didn't quite flow naturally, but I loved the idea and world, and indigo buntings are my favorite bird and don't get enough love so it was a pleasant surprise to see them mentioned here!

I’ve previously read The Ember Stone by this author and wasn’t impressed, so I was super excited when I started reading the first chapter. Third-person narrative, descriptive, and observant, draws the reader in with relationship, emotion, and action. Then Juniper Berry leaves the house and it all goes pear-shaped.

Allurist Detention Centre, did she really need to go there to pick up a list? I understand the need to show that she can shapeshift, but this could be done another way. The gangs and the alley, why did she need to be introduced to them? They serve no real purpose in progressing the story and when she leaves, they play no further part.

The safe house with Birdie and Pearl is great and this was a good feature of the other book. Nekane and Dolion are strong characters that could have been developed further. Dolion (think Tywin Lannister) has the potential to be pushed into some serious malevolent actions. Equally, if Nekane was ‘shown’ to be standing up to his father more it could make for some very dramatic confrontations.

The exploration of the tunnels in the house appears to suggest a purpose but doesn’t deliver. They appear only useful as an escape route. Equally, the difference between Bellamy and his cousins is an interesting point of conflict but we see very little of their interaction. After Bellamy has grown, the years are dealt with very quickly, in a rush to wrap things up and move on.

I am pleased that the writing is getting better but am a little frustrated with the structure and pace, where there is a lack of motivation and purpose to drive the story forward. If the author can take some of the drama, engagement and purpose of the opening scenes and infuse it throughout the rest of the book, then we could be looking at a `real page-turner.

In Vizard: An Ember Files Side Story, author Shari Marshall crafts a suspenseful narrative around Juniper Berry, a young girl entangled in a web of vengeance and survival. The story begins in the aftermath of a harrowing attack, with Juniper emerging as the sole survivor. This tragedy propels her into a dangerous world where she must navigate a complex web of secrets and peril.

The book's central theme of resilience against overwhelming odds resonates deeply. Juniper's character is intricately portrayed, allowing readers to journey with her through challenges and triumphs. This emotional depth not only endears Juniper to the reader but also adds a layer of realism to her extraordinary circumstances. Marshall excels in creating a character who is not merely a passive participant in her story but an active pursuer of justice. Marshall's narrative pacing is a standout feature, skillfully balancing suspenseful action with moments of introspection. This equilibrium keeps the storyline engaging, drawing readers into Juniper's world and holding their attention until the final page. The vivid descriptions and imaginative setting further enhance the reading experience, crafting an intriguing and relatable world.

Vizard is a well-rounded novel offering a blend of intrigue, emotion, and adventure. It invites readers into a fantastical realm where themes of identity, determination, and the strength of the human spirit are explored. This book is a noteworthy addition to the fantasy genre, offering a compelling read for those who appreciate stories of adversity and triumph.

"Vizard" by Shari Marshall unfolds as a captivating tale within the Ember Files series, seamlessly blending elements of revenge, romance, and magical intrigue. The book introduces us to Rye, a resilient protagonist who survives a tragic event through a vision, setting the stage for her pursuit of retribution against the mysterious Society of the Blood Wind, implicated in her parents' murder.
The narrative skillfully navigates Rye's whirlwind romance with Nekane, a Blood Wind member, while positioning her as a pivotal figure in the escalating magical war. Despite the brevity of the novella, Rye's character undergoes a compelling transformation, driven by grief, revenge, and ultimately introspection.
Shari Marshall's worldbuilding shines as she introduces a vivid magic system, exploring the contrasting nature of dark magic and the joyous essence of Fae magic. The book expertly unfolds with thrilling espionage against the Society of the Blood Wind, showcasing Rye's powerful abilities and adding depth to the overarching conflict. "Vizard" proves to be a captivating addition to the Ember Files series, offering a seamless blend of inventive worldbuilding, character-driven storytelling, and a resilient heroine in Rye. Whether exploring family dynamics or delving into espionage and fantastical elements, the novel promises a compelling reading experience for fans of magical worlds and well-rounded characters.

A well-crafted coming-of-age fantasy...

"Vizard: An Ember Files Side Story" by Shari Marshall is an intense exploration into a world where survival takes on new and brutal dimensions. The narrative revolves around the existence of a kill list, a dark secret known to few Spellbinders that sets the stage for a series of merciless attacks on multiple families. In the aftermath of one such brutal incident, Juniper Berry emerges as a survivor, a thirteen-year-old thrust into a clandestine and precarious existence.

Forced to navigate the shadows and care for herself, Juniper plots a course of retribution that propels her into a realm of intrigue and peril, challenging the already fragile facets of her identity. As Juniper Berry tightens the noose around her enemies, fate intervenes, leading her into a web of complex relationships and hazards. What begins as a mere survival strategy evolves into something more profound—an unfortunate pattern that leaves Juniper Berry torn between irreconcilable lives.

Marshall masterfully weaves a gripping tale, delving into the complexities of revenge, survival, and the intricate dance of fate. "Vizard" presents a riveting narrative that keeps readers on the edge, exploring the resilience of a young protagonist caught in the crosscurrents of a world shaped by dark secrets and unforeseen consequences. Highly recommended.

Vizard is a fast-paced novel set in a dystopian world where destiny, vengeance and survival collide. Juniper Berry is a thirteen-year-old living in a world that has emerged from a brutal attack on her family. As she faces a new reality filled with revenge she is determined to seek justice with the same vengeance as the one who mercilessly slaughtered her family.

What makes Vizard so unique is Juniper herself- a strong female lead character who is complex and resilient. This story is more than just a story of survival; it’s a profound coming-of-age story that examines the depths of Juniper's heart.

The reader is pulled through a montage of emotions ranging from heartbreak to raw determination, and indomitable resolve. Marshall, has, with this novel wrapped up an intricate balance of sorrow and resiliency, pain and strength.

Most importantly, Marshall presents this post-apocalyptic society in a completely believable manner- reflecting issues that are both haunting and familiar.

From the intense and dramatic scenes of violence to the tender and poignant acts of love, friendship, and sacrifice, Marshall delivers a captivating read worth every minute. I would highly recommend Vizard to anyone with a love for action and adventure, and whose heart longs for the extraordinary.

I didn't read the first book in the Ember Files series, but as a side story, I don't think any of that is necessary as this is solely focused on Juniper Berry aka Rye. The book starts immediately with action, drawing you in, and taking you on a wild, magical ride. Juniper/Rye faces so much in a few short years and I enjoyed how she adopted different personas depending on the situation she was facing. This book had a lot of action and information, but never felt overwhelming. For thirteen, Juniper is remarkably well adjusted and powerful, she's been taught well and it was fun to see her grow. I wanted more time with her character and her life with Nekane, I feel like this was almost too quick of a read and could have been given a few extra chapters versus speeding through parts and giving a summary. But as a side story this was well done and I look forward to reading more from The Ember Files.

I reread “Vizard” while listening to the soon-to-be-released audiobook version—a listening proofread. Tracy Parsons narrates the audiobook, and she does a wonderful job. For audiobook fans, you won’t want to miss this urban fantasy prequel.
