As the Treasurer and Tech genius of the Steel Empire Motorcycle Club, I know everybody’s secrets—even our dear town Mayor.
Mayor Emerald Anderson is my boss’ dad and the former President of my MC. He doesn’t know it yet, but this Halloween, I’m going to bring his secrets to light for his pleasure.
The minute Wendell Black aka Slack swaggered his way into my office; I knew from the dirty glint in his eye that I’d be in trouble. I just didn’t realize he would blackmail me and then make me desperate for him.
Now I'm running through the woods with him hot on my heels, ready to make my Halloween fantasy come true.
If you're in search of a Black Smutty Queer Novella, 'Hunted' could be your perfect pick! It's a quick and spicy read that revolves around the Halloween holiday, although, it's not a book of horror. The author ensures the smut level hits the mark. However, given the central theme of blackmail, I anticipated a bit more of an exhilarating chase. Nevertheless, if you're after a swift read with a heavy dose of spice, this novella is undoubtedly the place to find it.
Already, i was intrigued by this book because it has chapter titles and i think that is a lost art! But with the time jump, they make it easier to follow the timeline. This novella is so cute and sweet and spicy! When I read the trigger warnings I thought it was going to be a horror, it is not, it just takes place on Halloween. Wendell is a tech genius who sometimes uses that genius for evil, lol. Everett is the Mayor who Wendell has had a massive crush on for years. Even with the story being less than 100 pages, it came together so beautifully, it gave me the warm and fuzzies, and I cannot wait for the next one.
MM, Age Gap, Sub/Dom, Primal, and ALL the Triggers!!
Jaylee did not play with this one. It's super spicy, funny, smooth, and exciting.
She took the masked man to an entirely different level. This was a horror movie where the villain gives you orgasms when caught. I loved it. Can't wait for the next in the series.
To address the grammar errors. Yes, there were some. But I acknowledge that this is an ARC and trust that all of that will be cleaned up prior to release. I read ARCS weekly and have seen plenty or grammar and formatting issues but as a reader I focus on the story.
This story was spicy and fun for me. I truly enjoyed the read.
"Hunted" by Jaylee Fields was an absolute rollercoaster of fun and sensuality! The story of Emerald and Wendell, set in the scintillating world of the Steel Empire Motorcycle Club, had me hooked from the get-go. While the initial setup had me slightly scrambling to keep up with character names and their actions due to the lightning-fast pacing, the rest of the story more than made up for it. The chemistry between the characters was off the charts, and the Halloween backdrop added a tantalizing layer of mystery and excitement. Jaylee Fields certainly knows how to turn up the heat, and "Hunted" delivered on its promise of a sexy, thrilling ride.
This ain't my first rodeo, but I'm apprehensive about posting this review. The author said they would respect reader spaces. Y'all better behave yourself!
Let's start off with what little this book/author did right. At the beginning, the author acknowledges that by writing a MM romance she's occupying Gay Author spaces which are already overwrought with heterosexual female authors profitting off and fetishizing an identity that ain't theirs, and lists actual gay authors who write queer stories.
And that's the only good thing I can say about this book. Now let's talk about the bad.
The author claims in her acknowledgements that she had an editor and beta readers, but there ain't evidence within the text to support that claim. Not only can you not go a page without encountering grammatical, spelling, and punctuation errors, it's borderline miraculous if you read two consecutive sentences that make any sense at all.
Examples: "His eyes scanned at his opponent, who was directly below up, and this lifted." "He went to where he stood," "GFuck this man" "The sound of loud shouting and music filled my heart, and how dusty and sweaty the air smelled made me feel sticky." "Thirty teen years is a long time to obsessed with this man" "He leads me to his study up the spiral stairs to his study." "his noisy, smart-ass found this"
If that ain't enough, the way the sentences are structured makes them damn near illegible. For example: "But damn, from his abs, the definition of his back muscles align his back, even those thighs that could snap necks." "I know; why the fuck is my black ass watching that kinda porn. It all dates back to December 21st, back in 1996. I couldn't explain it, but I knew of a woman ever asked me to dress up like him and fuck her, I would have the costume delivered to my house yesterday." "The bottom of his shirt held between his teeth and the bottom of his tattoo. I didn't understand." "His greeted teeth moaned, and her breathy screams and the loud wet skin slapping filled my ears." "My balls tightened as I pressed myself back flat against the wall." "It did little to hide his well-built muscular arms, not too swollen, but he wasn't frail." "He didn't speak, but a dark hood was over his eyes. The one that grinned like a hyena."
Characters are introduced by their call signs/nicknames, but the narrator will switch to their government name without informing the reader that they're the same character.
The hypersexualization of bisexual people starts within the prologue and continues throughout the entirety of the story. Being a bisexual is actually a profession according to the narrative ["Being Bi and surrounded by hot, violent older men was probably the worst profession to be in when you are attracted to older men."] so make sure all of you bi's reading this have your direct bill set up.
As much as the author claims to be an advocate for protecting reader spaces, I don't trust her, so yes, this is a burner. But REVIEWS ARE FOR READERS and I was given an ARC for an honest review. So here we go.
I truly feel bad for Jaylee Fields, because I don't know how this book made it out to ARC readers in the condition that it's in. All I could think while reading this book was "With betas like these, who needs enemies?" Either everyone who had eyes on this book prior to it being released to ARC readers straight up lied to Jaylee Fields, or they simply didn't read it and told her that it was good when it isn't. Either way, it seems she was set up for failure.
It isn't even promising. I can't even see the potential of a good story underneath all of the grammar and spelling errors. It doesn't read like a first draft, it reads like the author typed this up in her notes app and then said "Good enough!" This has to be one of the worst ARCs I've ever received.
I wasn't even going to say anything, but then I noticed that there are 5 star reviews on this book and I just couldn't sit silent while people marched blindly into a story that shouldn't have made it past alpha readers, much less betas and an editor. It's not fair to readers to be lied to for the ego of an author who doesn't respect their craft, their peers, or their audience. Because that's what this book is in it's current condition. Disrespectful.
I hope the author pulls this book and works really hard to make it something worthwhile. I hope she finds better friends who will tell her that something she's written needs work (and A LOT of it). This is really sad, I felt really sad reading it.
This is an example of why self published authors get such a bad rap. Jaylee either doesn't care that she wrote a bad book, or she doesn't realize it because no one in her circle is willing to be honest with her. Either way, this book needs a lot of work before it should be released to the masses. And I hope the author cares enough about her story, her audience, and her peers to put in that work.
This is a collection of disharmonic letters, that occasionally coagulate into a shape resembling the mangled corpse of a word. Calling it anything else would be a disservice to anyone who had the misfortune of being both literate and in the vicinity of this abomination. The author both perpetuates Mandingo stereotypes as well as biphobic rhetoric all under the guise of being a conscientious producer. The author seems to have wanted very dearly to write within AAVE conventions however, all she does is make herself look illiterate as she doesn’t adhere to a vast amount of what makes AAVE an actual language. I’m actually unsure if the author even realizes that AAVE has rules and misspelling “thirteen” as “thirty teen” isn’t AAVE. Under no circumstances can I believe for a moment that this author listened to anyone’s critique or feedback during the butchering of these sentences. Nor do I believe that she hired someone to edit this. It doesn’t even look as if she did a cursory Google docs spell check on it.
I would echo the other 1 star reviewers in saying the only thing she did correct was acknowledge her privilege but even that felt like pandering and much like her book, full of contradictions. In her welcome email to ARC readers she says she is queer (demisexual) yet in the book she says she’s heterosexual. It seems the author can’t keep anything straight.
As this author has fostered a reputation for being explosive in her reactions to things and shows great delight in dragging people for the smallest of things for weeks on end, I’ve of course made a burner. She has not fostered a safe environment despite her chest beating that she has. I expected someone who bleats so loudly about professionalism to have taken this seriously. It is obvious that Jaylee Fields only sees unprofessionalism in others and not in herself. After all to quote her email to us ARC readers, in her eyes this was perfect.
Sincerely, from one of your Black readers please do better. This was a slap in the face to every -actual- independent author of Color.
Blackmailing your former boss/your current bosses dad for some dick is absolutely out of pocket!! Something this little novella was out of pocket. Wendell was a mess. An obsessed with his bosses dad for 13 years mess. He didn't care what he had to do to get Emerald, he was gone do it.
Largely, I did enjoy this short. I'm going to always advocate for more dark black romance and more black MM romance. The fact that this was a 2 for 1 with both of those things was great to see. With that being said, though I enjoyed the shenanigans. I have to give this book a 3 because there were way too many grammatical errors. Way too many. To the point it became distracting. Hopefully the author can find an editor for her future projects. It'd make a world of difference.
At the end it mentions that Wendell and Emerald will be back for a Christmas book sometime this year. I will definitely be reading that.
I received an ARC of this and this is my honest opinion.
I quite enjoyed the thrill and pure flaming hot smut in this, as well as what we learned about the characters. It's perfect if you're looking for a short and sweet dirty halloween and kink centered m/m read.
That said the original ARC that went out did have more than a few editing issues that took away from my positive reading experience. ARC's are generally not finalized, but the level of errors was beyond the usual. While the author did sent out another version that had been fixed, I had already read the first one and formed my first impression - so this review is about that version.
The final published version may very well be entirely fixed and have very few errors in comparison, so don't let this deter you from picking it up if you want something spicy to sink your teeth into this halloween season.
Debut author Jaylee Feild delivers a sweet and kinky MM novella. I’m highkey annoyed we didn’t get more interactions with Wendell and Emerald or at least just Wendell he’s so freaking lovable. I think the one thing that was missing was an explanation of why Wendell went about the situation the way he did. I legit want to know if Emerald would have considered the proposition under other circumstances. I think their conversation at the end would have been the perfect time for it and it would have solidifying the emotional exchange. Giving it more depth. This was hot and a touch dark. I love the young buck being the Dom in the dynamic but it was the switch energy that makes this a treat.
VI received this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I know that this book is less than 100 pages, but it did not had to go this hard. This book is SPICYYYYYYY! This book comes out swinging with imagery and setting the mood to how Emerald is. However, Wendell is that dude, been that dude, will always be that dude.
Spoiler Starts...
You blackmail that man and got a whole submissive holiday boo! Do they sell that on Amazon? Can we get that on Prime?
Spoiler Ends....
I love the spice but I really love the lovely moments when they checked on each other and reassured, I melted. I love forward to the next story, and congrats on this debut novella from the author.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
This book was so good and honestly just so much fun. It has the Halloween vibes that I love, and while these men are both associated with a Motorcycle club, they are both just wonderful cinnamon rolls (Unless it comes time for some bedroom scenes if you know what I mean). I loved both of these characters so much. The story was wonderful and the spice was fantastic. Some of the characters and story were a little under developed but that is pretty common with a novella and I am so excited to read the next book in this installment.
The book was overall well-written, but felt rushed and inconsistent at times. The spice was well-done, and I especially appreciated the focus on consent. The character development was a bit too fast to establish a cohesive arc for the MCs. I do hope that writing these two in the future will give the author the opportunity to take the time to flesh them out and settle into consistent goals and arcs.
This was a really good way to start my year. It was dark and erotic without being overwhelming. There was balance that made this not only entertaining but emotional as well. Two people acting out their carnal desires but also maybe opening the door for a little more. I’m absolutely looking forward to seeing these 2 again!!
Omg this was deliciously spicy and fun! Loved seeing their dynamic unfold and wanted more of their story. I will definitely be picking up the next book to see what other scenarios they come up with. The snark in this book was 🔥 the puppy convo had me truly laughing out loud 🤣
What A time! Age-gap & my boss's daddy… well sign me up then! Baby, listen Wendell was on a mission to finally get Emerald after 13 years! This was a quick, fast paced spicy read and I was here for it!!! Find me in the woods with a mask on and then lets have a good time, whew lawd!
I was looking for something short, sweet dangerously fun and this checked all the boxes. This was dark and sexy age gap that I didn't mind. NOT for the fait of heart but if you like dark blackmail and black males this if for you.
Imma keep my eyes open for the other books in this series!!
I haven't lived under a rock but this was my first time reading about 2 male characters. Interesting at how it paralleled other romances. I expected it to flow but not really expecting it too be different. It was a good, short read. On top book 2.
Super fun and story. Not my usual read, but I'm glad I did. It's gripping, it's dark, it spicy AF. If you're looking for something to ready on a day off, this the book.
Are you in the mood for an short smutty read? Look no further than "Hunted," a spicy novella that takes place during Halloween and explores the relationship between tech wiz/treasurer Wendell 'Slack' Black and former President Ernest 'Emerald' Anderson. Wendell, who has been harboring a crush on Emerald for a long time, resorts to blackmailing him. Although Emerald is initially outraged, he finds himself inexplicably drawn to the irresistible proposition.

This book was nasty but.. I liked it LMAO. I don’t think I’ve read anything like this and it was my first MM romance. It was also my first time reading the predator/prey kink in full effect. It didn’t disappoint either. A quick and spicy read.
I took my time writing this review because I need to make sure I wanted to do this, but I have ultimately to do what I've done with every other book I've read and leave an honest review.
Hunted is "supposed" to be an age gap, best friend's dad, MM erotic horror. What I read was a
