Clock Tower Bound

Rate this book
Clock Tower Bound: It's always a good time to read.

Just ask Cezanne (just “Anne” if you please. Anne with an E). After her disastrous business breakup with her best friend, Anne left her beloved Berne’d Books in the dust and moved across the street to the building she’d always wanted for their bookstore. Clock Tower Bound might be small and floundering, but it has great potential.

If Berne, Indiana can support two bookstores that is.

Enter Milton Coleridge and his trusty parrotlet, Atticus. Anne is certain that Milton can ensure the success of a bookstore that emphasizes reader-author connections and keeping the younger generation in good literature.

Milton… isn’t so certain. A town with a population of just over four thousand isn’t exactly a gold mine for one store, much less two! And then there’s that problem with the ex-best friend. The one Anne won’t talk about.

It’ll take a whole lot more than fancy book release parties to make the store profitable–much more. Although he’s not sure she wants to hear that. This one could take a degree in diplomacy. Too bad he missed that class in business school.

Three fractured friendships, two stores, and one totally unwanted solution.

**fingers skittle across the keyboard. Stop. Eyelids blink over the top**

Oh, was this bio day? Oops! I forgot. I was lost in my latest manuscript. Umm... bio. Yeah.

Hi! I’m Chautona Havig. (for those who care, that’s Shuh-TONE-uh HAVE-ig). Yeah. Just work with me here. I should have used a pseudonym, but when you grow up with a name like Chautona, it kind of sticks.

Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful; and let us consider how to stimulate one another to love and good deeds, not forsaking our own assembling together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another; and all the more as you see the day drawing near. ~ Hebrews 10: 23–25

Those aren’t just words on a page for me–they’re why I write. I write to encourage my brothers and sisters in Christ. The stories I create are to make people laugh, cry, question, consider.

They’re for you.

When the world screams for hope, I try to point you to the true Source of hope–Jesus.

Sometimes life in the church no longer seems a refuge from the pain of a self-serving world around us, but through my stories, I try to point you to the only Refuge that can truly help–the Father’s Everlasting Arms.

And sometimes we just need an escape from the monotony, the emptiness we see around us. We need joy, laughter–what I like to call “just the write escape.”

Christian fiction without apology or pretense–lived, not preached.
What does that even mean?
It means I care–about you. About your walk with Jesus. I care about the words you put before your eyes, the mental pictures those words conjure. It’s difficult to express just how much I love my brothers and sisters in Christ. It’s difficult to share just how much I love you.

But I do.

And I write for you. I sit in my little house in California’s Mojave Desert and I write to show you why one sister believes one thing, why a brother believes another. I write to show you how some Christians handle trials or triumphs–for you. So when you’re faced with something–good or bad, it doesn’t matter–maybe it’ll spark a memory. Maybe that memory will smolder until you pull out your Bible and see what the Lord said about it–about His great love for you. For YOU!

And maybe, just maybe, you’ll share that love with another hurting, confused, or blessed-with-more-than-she-knows-what-to-do-with soul.

I just happen to think that’s the most blessed giving anyone could hope to receive.

This book just makes my book loving heart swell with happiness! It satisfies my book craving and leaves me happy and content. Does that sound sappy? Well, it’s true! It’s a book full of bookstores, book quotes, book lovers, and several of my favorite books get a mention! Reading it almost makes me feel like I’m sitting in a beautiful bookstore, surrounded by shelf upon shelf of glorious books just waiting for me to take one down and curl up in a chair in the corner and…

Oh, and the STORY is also excellent! This is already one of my favorite series, and I love this book the best of all so far! It’s a story of forgiveness, humility, trusting God, friendships restored, oh, and BOOKS! And not only does this book include wonderful quotes from other books, it has many, many wonderful quotes of its own! In fact, I plan to get a pen and notebook and read through the book again just so I can write down all my favorite quotes!

There is some romance in the story, but it’s not the focus. The main story is about a lost friendship, a perceived (or maybe real) offense, and how Christians should respond when hurt by brothers and sisters in Christ. And Milton is back! And he is needed! I love Milton’s perspective on things; he wants to save bookstores and make businesses thrive, but he knows that people are more important!

Lastly, while this book is part of a series, the main storyline is a stand-alone story so you don’t necessarily have to read the other books first. But I do recommend that you read them in order anyway, because Milton’s story stretches across the series and it’s wonderful to read!

I received a free advance copy of this book and chose to review it. All opinions are my own.

Honestly, I wasn’t sure I was going to love this one. BUT the last half totally changed my mind!

Yes, there were a few personal preference things (the drama did feel a tad too childish for 30 year olds). However, the overarching themes of redemption, confession & repentance, forgiveness, and restoration were SO beautifully done!

Anne & Gage were definitely giving Anne & Gilbert vibes. (& thank you for the touching tribute to Jonathan Crombie, who was and always will be our Gilbert Blythe. 💛) The sheer amount of bookishness delighted my heart to no end. And Gage & Milton have one of the greatest guy friendships I’ve read. 🥹

Lastly, I am totally Team Give-Milton-a-love-interest. Just saying, Chautona! 😉

Wow, books, books, forgiveness, books!

I loved this bookish book where Milton comes to save another bookstore and see if he, with God’s help, can save a friendship too! Anne reminds you of Anne of Green Gables, with her delightful character and love of books! The description of her bookstore is fascinating! The quotes from various books all fit the plot and it’s very good!

Different from the other books in the series: this book focuses on repairing friendships while saving the bookstore. I ended up dragging out the last 30 pages so the book wouldn't end.

The Next Page is amazing! Worth the trip if you go near Berne.

Well, I have mixed feelings about this book.
Things I liked:
The book stores! I want to go to Clock Tower Bound as it sounds lovely!
Milton and Atticus (not finch) were of course a lot of fun. I do feel a little sorry for Milton, and I really hope that he gets his happily-ever-after.
The information about the Limberlost. I’ve read and loved “Freckles” and “Girl of the Limberlost” but I didn’t know the story of how it got its name.
Lots of fun times eating great food and talking about books, though I’ve never met anyone who can just quote things from random books all the time for any occasion.
Gage prayed a lot. And others spend time praying and asking for wisdom about situations.

Things I didn’t like:
The fact that Gage, Nadia, and everyone else let Anne go a year believing and acting on a lie. No, she might not have wanted to listen before, but I can’t help thinking that all that mess could and should have been resolved a long time ago. (Of course there wouldn’t be a book if it hadn’t but still.)
Anne’s obsession over Anne Shirley. Painting freckles? Seriously? I don’t really like it when others try to live like a book character. It would be okay for a day or a special event, but when it becomes obsession, that’s a problem. And the fact that Anne was telling a girl to be herself and not try to be someone else, she herself was trying her best to be like a fictional character!
There was at least one time when something happened but I have no idea what because the book never said, and Anne and Milton were talking and nothing made sense. I reread that entire page and am still just as clueless now as I was then. I feel like something got edited out or maybe the editor knew something that the reader doesn’t and so didn’t even notice that an important bit of information was missing. Anyway, it felt really odd and left me puzzled.

Overall, the story wasn’t bad. I was thankful that the repentance and forgiveness didn’t come at the very end of the book.

4.5/5

Clock Tower Bound is the second book in the Bookstrings series. It can be read as a stand-alone novel, but I recommend reading them (including the novellas) in order.

Having read Twice Sold Tales TWICE and loving it both times, I had extremely high expectations for Clock Bound Tower. I struggled to get into it and even (gasp) thought about not finishing it. Why? Because the premise is built upon miscommunication and continues for a year with a lack of communication. This is one of the most obnoxious tropes for me. The second part I struggled with was Anne, who is thirty years old, wanting to be Anne Shirley to the point she dyes her hair and paints freckles on her face. While it is somewhat amusing, it is also annoying.

Now, for what kept me going: everything else. Gage is completely torn up that his two best friends are not talking to each other. Milton and Atticus are back. There are SO many great quotes about books, friendship, and so much more. Nadia's firm belief in doing what was right, even though it kept her and Anne's friendship fractured.

I loved the second half of the book. I loved Milton and Gage's friendship and am always sad when Milton has to move on to his next job. I hope this is not the end of the series, and I hope that Milton gets a love interest! Not that he needs one to be complete, but because he seems to want one and does get lonely.

The story had themes of friendship (obviously broken), waiting on God's timing, redemption, and forgiveness. There were SO many beautiful moments in the story. Anne's love of the children who come into her story is truly inspiring. I loved Gage, his honesty, his integrity, and his heart. I could say so much more about the story, but I will end with give it a chance, and don't let the beginning convince you to miss the end.

When it was good it was very good,
and it was very clean, and zero lurid sex scenes.

It seemed a bit more 'Christian' than other of her novels I have read,
which to me were 'Christian lite', in my evaluation.

Again, some readers find it great that she did not write in a 'preachy' style.
I am beginning to want to throw the computer at the wall,
when people praise the author for not putting toooo much Christianity in their Christian novels.

I need to read scriptures in a Christian novel, precepts, and application of scriptures,
and prayers said 'out loud', and oh yes, a pastor's ( at least a bit of) his sermons etc etc.

There was a TON of books being sort of.... reviewed.
However it could have been a LOT more useful to me,
if the characters were reviewing, ONLY Christian novels.

Yes, I get that there are CLASSIC secular books,
but I don't read them, I just don't, no matter how grrrreat!
So I am guessing, maybe 25% talked about were Christian books,
and the rest were all classics, but secular.

Still when she did quote scripture,
and applied it to the lives of the characters,
it was very well done.

I did get a wee bit bored and/or irritated,
that it took Anne over a year,
before she was willing to forgive!!

The author really gives you an understanding tho,
of the characters.

Stars: ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ (5/5 stars)
Read: January 2024
Format: Kindle e-Book
Challenge Prompt: CNL’s #47 of 50 - “By an author who writes multiple genres”

BOOK 11 for 2024: Another home run from Chautona! There are so many awesome life lessons in this novel. It just kept getting better as I read! I highlighted in so many places as evidenced by my Kindle annotations and on Goodreads.

I love how many other authors (old and new!) are mentioned in Chautona’s books. She once again includes a broad spectrum of books and authors: classics, children’s, YA, Christian fiction, and more. It’s fun seeing many books that I’ve read or plan to read, her use of humour about Pepper Basham’s “swoony kisses,” etc. She even mentions one of my favourite books ever, Hope Between the Pages (also by Basham). To see one favourite author mention another is book-lover heaven!

Her characters aren’t picture-perfect and I appreciate that. It’s real life. They’re like friends. I love watching them learn and grow as they seek God and His direction.

I love the friendships in this book. Even though there are problems, you can see the love they have for one another behind the pride and heartache. Anne is a wonderful woman with a heart of gold and she learns that people come before ideas and books. Gage is swoon-worthy in his own right because he loves Anne enough to wait for her to make things right with Nadia, and for her to be “his Anne” again. Nadia is a treasure who learns to go after her own dreams and trusts that God will restore their friendship. Both Gage and Nadia show true wisdom in dealing with the pain and disappointment and still follow God’s leading in the ladies’ rift.

Then there is Milton and his parrotlet, Atticus-not Finch. They are in both novellas and both novels. You can’t help but like him fiercely. He has a heart of gold and an amazing ministry even through his business. We need more Miltons in this world. I would REALLY love to see another book (or 3!) in this series with him falling in love. (Read: HINT, HINT, HINT!!!)

As Atticus would say, “READ IT!”

another great story

Chautona Havig’s characters are written so well that they become real. This is a story about reconciliation most of all. But also a lesson in waiting for Gods timing and listening to him for answers when things don’t seem to be going well. Not to mention it is about books, book lovers, book shops. A delightful, quirky read with depths that delighted.

I love these “save the bookshop” books. And every time I read them, I am left wishing I knew of a small, personal bookstore where I could go. (Apparently there is a real one close to Berne, Indiana, but since that is multiple hours away it wouldn’t make for a quick trip.) Thanks to these books, I will be keeping my eyes open wherever I go.

Anyway, when you enjoy this wonderful story, you too may find yourself blown away by the amount of book quotes and books you’ve never heard of. And I love the characters, especially Milton and Atticus-not-finch. (Fun fact: I always pictured him as a black raven…”Quoth the Raven, ‘Nevermore.’” That’s so wrong. Lol) I love getting views from everyone, not just one or two characters. I love getting to travel to a real town and getting to see real interactions with people. (Be sure to check out the Author Note and the Book List at the end of the book!)

Altogether, this is a darling book. It was an enjoyable read, and maybe the final nudge I needed to seek out DVDs of the Megan Follows Anne Shirley movies. (My VHS player broke and so the tapes sit there forlornly.) I am definitely with Nadia and Anne in the book— those movies can’t be topped, and as much as they deviate ultimately from the storyline of the book, they are amazing. But I digress, as this is a book review, not a movie recommendation.

If you like Anne Shirley, you’ll love Anne Montgomery. Pick up Clock Tower Bound and see for yourself!

Clock Tower Bound is Book Two in wordsmith Chautona Havig’s Bookstrings Series. It may easily be read as a stand alone, but characters and references from the first book appear. This is a Christian contemporary fiction with a light romance.

This is definitely a book for bibliophiles (book lovers). Book titles are dropped like hot potatoes throughout this quirky tale. Fans of Anne of Green Gables will be thrilled with the many references. The setting is bookstores in Berne, Indiana.

Author Havig has brilliantly crafted characters that will become friends of your heart. I wanted to travel up north to visit Berne and meet them. The best part is their faith and trust in God. Life and Christian messages are expertly woven throughout this sweet story.

Having been an independent bookstore owner for a decade, parts in this book seemed farfetched to me. Of course, it might have simply been my store’s location and customer base. Book signings were a fun, big sales day.

Another thing that did not sit well with me was all of the talking the others did about Anne. Could that be construed as gossiping? I am not a fan of anything that promotes that.

It is a nice story although it seems to drag in a few spots. I became easily invested in the characters and their lives. Will I read the next installment? Absolutely. I recommend that you start with this book and book one now. It gets a 4 out of 5 star rating from me.

another Bookstrings installment!

I love books. I do not love books in the same way the characters of this book do, as I do not speak in book quotes. However, my love for books leads me to love this series of books. Milton, saver of bookstores, is such a great tie together character for each of these books. He is a main character of the book, yet he is not THE main character. Milton’s job is to consult with businesses on how to improve, but his side job is to help struggling, independent bookstores survive and thrive. Milton has also helped each of the bookstore owners in the series to better themselves or to really figure out who they are and what they want to do in their lives. This story is no different, except in this story, Milton has former best friends and business partners running two stores in the same town. I appreciated so much the efforts that went into helping the stores succeed, but more than that the efforts at reconciliation and personal growth that Milton facilitates throughout this story. If you love Anne of Green Gables, then that is a bonus for you in this book as well. I highly recommend this book. Curl up with a blanket, a cozy drink, and some nature while you enjoy the stories found in these pages.

Clock Tower Bound: It’s always a good time to read

Clock Tower Bound Books sits across the street from Berned Books in Berne Indiana. Anne Montgomery once co- owned Berned Books with her best friend Nadia but after a huge disagreement Anne took her dreams an opened a rival store. Neither was as happy as they once were, but that was about to change.

Enter Milton Coleridge, a consultant who "fixed" companies big and small. Milton and his parolet "Atticus-not-finch" have a track record of saving floundering bookstores. This time it takes him a bit more time and prayers to accept the challenge. It does help when Gage, the third of once were the 3 best friends chimes in thinking outside help was needed.

It's not easy to reconcile what looks unreconcileable. Have things fallen apart that badly?

As a long time reader of Chautona Havig I eagerly awaited this book, in part since it's predecessor was on my best books list for 2023. Besides growing my TBR, Havig's spin on life, faith and books keeps me reading and always will. Highly Recommended 5/5

I loved this book! Of course, Milton Coleridge has been a friend ever since I met him in Spines and Leaves, and his pet is always an adorable hoot. I quickly became invested in the conflict between Anne and her former friend, hoping that they could find a way to mend the rift between them. However, that dragged on and on, and I kept getting more and more annoyed at them.
I loved this book! I loved reading recommendations for good books (now there are even more on my ever-growing TBR list), and I loved reading the descriptions of the area. I loved the depiction of the Amish in the area as real people and not cute people who talk funny. This book will definitely be in my top ten for the year.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author, and these are my honest thoughts about it.

This is the second in the Bookstrings series and once again Milton is called upon to save a bookstore, but also a friendship. This one was a little confusing for me at the start, and honestly I'm not totally sure I understand what caused the friendship to break, but I loved the characters! If you are a fan of Anne of Green Gables then there are plenty of references that give homage to the books and the movies. There were also references to You Got Mail, but I haven't seen that in so long, that I missed some of those. If you are a book lover at all there are plenty of book mentions to keep you smiling. It is also a story of forgiveness and moving past real or perceived hurts and letting God heal. I hope we get more from this story. I would love one focusing on Milton.

An excellent tale to collect more titles of excellent tales...

With another pleasurable tale by author Chautona Havig tucked in my heart, i plan to find other stories she's crafted. This was a comfortable and comforting adventure that i longed to believe was non-fictional; a town and characters i might log into Mapquest and take a road trip to visit. The only discomfort i experienced was the (maybe) overly abundant chapter quantity. Possibly, the conclusion could've occurred in fewer... and yet, there were still those quotes, movie references, and titles of tales i now will add to my lists of must-read tomes (which reminds me of one title i must find - the convenient list at the end of both books in her Bookstrings series is delightful!)

3.5 🌟

There were a lot of great things about this book. I'm going to start with my one dislike first and get it out of the way: I thought the friends were super hard on Anne involving the "conflict" and it was kind of weird how her 2 best friends (plus the bookstore doctor) talked, messaged, and texted about her. I was not a fan of that part (and it reduced my rating), even though it all worked out in the end.

See this review and more on my Substack: https://momsmusings.substack.com/i/14...

But there was so much I DID love. Including the bookstore setting and the character of Anne. Anne was delightful. She was determined to embody the spirit of Anne of Green Gables and it was adorable, right down to her painting freckles on her face. The Clock Tower bookstore was also a delight. I especially loved the ambient sounds and the kids who came through who loved books.

When Anne's friends Gage and Nadia were acting normally, I loved their interactions and the silliness they engaged in together. I really liked all of the gatherings involving food - that made things seem very realistic and made me nostalgic for college days when we could drop everything like they did just to eat and hang out.

Overall, the characters were lovely and the bookstore was paradise. The strange thing with the "conflict", why it happened, and how they handled it, was all a little strange to me, but didn't hinder my enjoyment of the book!

Another excellent novel by Chautona Havig, Clock Tower Bound (book 2 of the Bookstrings series), is a tale of friendships and fallout. Anne Montgomery opened a charming bookstore in the small town's clock tower. It would be perfect, except it is across the street from her former best friend's bookstore, and the tiny village can't support both. The town also can't support the rift between the two bookstore owners. Their year-long battle frustrates everyone, especially their mutual friend, Gage. Enter bookstore doctor Milton Coleridge. Yes, he can help Anne with her focus and marketing, but his real focus will be healing the relationship between two sisters in Christ.

3.5/5 STARS! Anne of Green Gable fans will love this. Booknerds will adore this too. First off, I loved the premise of this, such a fun plot. I also loved how this didnt feel too preachy & did a great job showcasing Christian adults without being overly corny. Third, all the references made my book loblving heart so full. Fourth, Anne was adorable & i loved her whimsical-ness. My only complaint was the actual conflict between Nadia & Anne. I felt it was way overblown & should have been something deeper to warrant Anne's reaction. But, I did enjoy this & would recommend to anyone wanting a fun Christian fiction that feels relatable.

Loved it!

I love books, Milton and Atticus (not finch) are favorites. This was a twist on past Bookstrings books - even if technically it's only Book 2, I consider it more like Book 4. To watch a wonderful friendship fracture, then mend took time. At times I wanted to rush it, but ultimately, I just enjoyed the process. I have family living in Indiana, I want to find Berne and visit, but I will be looking for my friends, Anne, Gage Nadia and Aunt Debby. I want to spend several days wandering Clock Tower Bound!

I love this series, and it keeps impressing me!

I’m a big fan of this author (Chautona Havig), so I may be biased, but this whole series has her vital wit, that authenticity which is so often absent from fiction, and characters that jump off the page. I read this because I liked the others in the series; but honestly, I am sad that there aren’t infinite books like this one! I hope this series never ends!

At about 80% in, I was thinking I'd land on 4 🌟. I love Milton and Atticus! I love the whole desire of keeping bookstores alive and thriving. I did get a little tired of Anne's anger but I loved the way it was finally wrapped up. And also, it was humbling to realize that I, too, have held on to anger ridiculously longer than necessary.

I've enjoyed the Bookstrings books I've read, and look forward to reading more of them. Good insights on relationships, trust, showing love in ways that communicate to the other person, etc. If you're a book nerd, you'll love all the references to your favorite books, and probably will find some new ones to try. The kids in the book are great, and then there's Atticus - not Finch!

Charming

This is a sweet story of misperception and forgiveness. Haven’t we all been there… I so enjoyed the author’s transparency of emotion in the thoughts of the main character. The confrontation that resulted between the two friends surprised me but encouraged me in my thoughts and how to address similar situations. I’ve enjoyed reading this one and Twice Sold Tales.

Friendship and Books

Chautona always develops such great characters. Sometimes their thoughts and dialog are confusing, but it usually means that I need to slow down my reading and pay more attention. This one is a great story of friendship and books, with a lot of good TBR suggestions.

Best friends, misunderstanding, reconciliation... Home Run! It all works together to make a tear jerking story of misunderstanding, hard-headed stubbornness, and finally reconciliation (with a touch of romance) for a truly memorable book. Thank you, Chautona.

Always Love Chautona

Steve’s wife says, “Love the life lessons that aren’t preachy. Characters that have real emotions and faults. The ending doesn’t tie up all neatly. If I was still working, I’d go back through to make a list of books to recommend to my students.”
