“An evocative, rich portrait of a tumultuous time, in which the main characters must ascertain which of them is indeed the captive of the other; humans reduced to themselves through the vicissitudes of history, and the limitations of landscape, class, and war. Hughes possesses a sense of the past that enables us to see and sometimes even to hear his various subjects, conveying a compelling sense of mystery and inevitability.”

– SUSANNA MOORE, author of In the Cut, The Whiteness of Bones, and The Lost Wife

The year is 622 A.D., and the Persian and Byzantine empires have been fighting a war in the deserts since before she was born...

Definitely not for me :
a very sad ending just to say all wars are useless.
The whole story looks like written in a rush and I wasn't even moved in the moments that should have been beautiful. This novella reads like a poorly written "Greek tragedy." The cover suggests a romantic setting, but there was little romance in it, and everything ends badly and bitterly. I DO NOT RECOMMEND IT TO ANYONE. Perhaps, if I feel like wasting more time (beyond the time I already wasted reading the book), I'll write a more detailed review.

For a debut novel, there was so much delicateness and beautiful poetry in the prose. JFH is a gifted visual storyteller, weaving a story of fate and woe between star crossed lovers Asana and Antonius, all set in a lushly described historical background. I loved how strong the Fate theme was woven in the whole book, including how the wheels of Fate entwined the characters irremediably towards each other. Also at the heart of the story is the age old (unlearned) lesson on the futility of wars and how hatred engenders hatred.

But how bittersweet the whole tone of the book...

💯 recommended for historical fiction readers looking for a new, promising author.

P.S. Merry Christmas 2023 to all book lovers!

The Gardens of Byzantium is set amongst the chaos of war, the Roman army are steadily moving towards Persia when three of their men are captured and tortured. Two survive, but the third man does not. The year is 622A.D.
Antonious, three months on is fighting to survive day to day, determined to never give in, never give up. His salvation comes in the form of mysterious supply of food lowered to his Prison cell, until one night, a silver ring falls to the floor and the girl quickly vanishes, never to return.
Asana and her brother are fleeing Antioch after the surprise attack on their home, the Barracks; their father a Commander in the Persian Army. The Romans had invaded, their world was in crisis and the only choice they had was to try and make it to Tyre, where they hoped to find safety and their father.
Fate is a fickle creature and plays a very important role in what is to come in the gentle and beautiful Asana’s future, as it will in Antonius’s. Both, on their separate pathways, meet an elderly woman in the ruins of the ancient, long abandoned village of Berytus, who tells them of a love that will be found but will not last.
Shooting stars and Nightingales help Asana hold onto hope, even when her life becomes almost unbearable. Antonius, now a Garrison Commander in Byzantium, is still full of vengeance, committed to his vow to find the men who carelessly committed such brutally torture.
As the story of Asana and Antonius unfolds against a dramatic backdrop, the rich beauty of an ill-fated love captures the heart and the imagination. J.F Hughes takes the time to set the background to the Far East to enhance the storyline, which, while not unique, is captivating.
The Gardens of Byzantium is a well-researched, well written story of time long ago, when life was perilous, war was an everyday element of life, the people of Constantinople and Persia always expecting the worst.
A Playlist of music has been included at the front of the book, for those who enjoy music to accompany their reading, which adds a further element of enjoyment to a most pleasurable, Sunday on the couch story.

In 622 A.D., Persian Asana has lived her life in the chaos of war. When Asana is separated from her family, she finds herself saved by a Roman soldier who tries to keep her safe while she’s in the heart of enemy territory. Asana and Antonius grow to trust each other and find that their feelings turn quickly into more. With the Persian army making its way towards their haven in Constantinople, Asana and Antonius know their time together is short.

This book is a bit outside of my normal comfort zone but I am so glad I gave it a try! It’s an action packed epic despite its short length. This is a romantic tragedy, as well, and it’s spelled out quite clearly using prophecies that the story won’t end happily. The romance between Asana and Antonius is heartbreaking in its inevitability knowing the reality of the time and the prophecy they both heard.

Recommended if you enjoy: 🏛️ the Roman Empire 💍 fated mates ⚔️ opposite sides of the war 🔮 prophecies 🐴 rich historical detail 🥀 bittersweet and tragic endings

Thank you to J.F. Hughes and CK Publicity for the advanced copy to read and review. All opinions are my own. The Gardens of Byzantium is now available in paperback and Kindle Unlimited.

The Gardens of Byzantium by J. F. Hughes is set during the early centuries of the Byzantine Empire before Mohammedism became one of the chief ideologies competing for dominance.

Byzantium began during the reign of Constantine the Great when the Roman Empire was so vast it was necessary to split it into East and West, the Imperial Court shifting cities from Rome to Ravenna, while in the east The Empire was centered in Constantinople where Asia meets Europe in the Bosphorus on the banks of the Golden Horn.

Our male protagonist is Antonius, a Roman military officer whom we meet while being tortured in a Persian prison in Antioch. While imprisoned and starved, he is kept alive by the mysterious visitations of an unknown woman who regularly lowers a basket with food and water into his dungeon. When Antonius is freed from prison by Roman troops, he vows vengeance against his torturers, and catches up with the chief among them, dispatching him. He is obsessed with finding his tormentor’s commander who has disappeared.

Our female protagonist is Asana, a beautiful Persian woman whose life is adrift after the death of her brother, while searching for her father. Instead of finding her father, she’s kidnapped by a merchant and his henchman, and forced into her new role as a slave, while being shopped around to the men the merchant does business with.

Antonius comes into her life when he rescues her from her captors in Constantinople where he’s been entrusted with commanding the garrison that protects the city. Instead of releasing her into what would be certain slavery, he risks all by moving her into his quarters in the palace, locking her up to protect her. This angers and confuses Asana, who’s known little mercy from the men in her life.

The story is loaded with echoes of irony and cruel coincidence. And while the two find solace in each other’s arms in the Gardens of Byzantium, there is lurking in the shadows those who would crush their dreams and the only happiness either had ever known.

This short novel gives us a glimpse into a place shrouded by the mists of time, the conflicts and passions of the day, which remain the passions of people today. While I might choose a different path from the one the characters choose, there is an inner logic and understanding of the choices they make.

A poetically written and handsomely mounted book with illustrations adorning each chapter, and maps depicting the era and its locales.

Lyrical and Mesmerizing

I love how this book comes with a classical music Playlist with suggestions for music to listen to while you're reading each chapter. It shows that the author truly thought about how the book would flow and which kinds of music would enhance the reading experience. So much care went into crafting this story, and that kind of attention to detail pays off as you're reading the story.

So what is the story about? Anna grew up in the care of her father, who is an officer in the Persian army in the year 622 AD. This is a time of war and great terror and turmoil, which make life achingly difficult for the meek and gentle Anna. What's worse, she is soon tossed into even greater peril when her family is attacked and she is forced to flee to safety on the back of her trusted companion, her horse. Those of you who have owned horses might understand her plight and how her horse companion is such a comfort for her. As fate would have it, she finds herself captured by a mysterious man and imprisoned in a palace in the heart of Constantinople, the capital of the Byzantine empire. Intrigue! What will happen to Anna now? Will she succumb to her passionate feelings for her dashing captor? Soon her happy and idyllic existence that she manages to eke out in the midst of the tumultuous time is destroyed, as news soon reaches her that a Persian army is steadily approaching and threatening to upend her life once again. Dynasties converge, and the story surges toward its thrilling and tragic conclusion.

I love how the story begins and ends with a little girl finding her place in the world and protecting what, in her childish innocence, is a treasure to her. The story is full of brutality and death, but it also has romantic elements as well. This is, first and foremost the story of a young woman finding herself and finding love after losing everything she thought mattered to her. And then she tragically loses everything all over again. It's a sad story, but also a hopeful one at the end, with the promise of a little child finding out what matters to her. I highly recommend reading this and finding yourself lost in this story.

A Story that Captivated My Heart

I just finished reading this incredible historical fiction novel, and I'm still reeling from the experience. Asana's journey, set against the backdrop of war-torn ancient civilizations, has left an indelible mark on my heart.

From the moment I stepped into Asana's world, I knew I was in for a treat. The author's vivid descriptions transported me to the scorching deserts of Persia and the vibrant streets of Constantinople, immersing me in a world of danger, uncertainty, and transformation.

Asana's story is a testament to the human spirit's capacity to persevere amidst chaos. I found myself entwined in her struggles, her passions, and her heartbreaks, feeling every emotion as if it were my own. The characters that populate her world are equally well-crafted, each one adding depth and nuance to the narrative.

The slow-burning romance between Asana and the Roman soldier had me swooning, while the action and suspense kept me on the edge of my seat. I loved how the author balanced these elements, creating a narrative that was both thrilling and emotionally resonant.

What truly sets this novel apart, however, is its historical accuracy. The author's passion for the period shines through on every page, transporting me to a bygone era with stunning accuracy.

This book has become one of my all-time favorites, and I know it will stay with me for a long time. If you're looking for a historical fiction novel that will captivate your heart and transport you to another time and place, look no further.

If you're a fan of historical fiction, or simply looking for a great story, do yourself a favor and pick up this book. Trust me, you won't regret it!

The Gardens of Byzantium is a captivating journey through the tumultuous backdrop of the Byzantine-Persian War in 622 A.D. Within the walls of Constantinople, amidst the chaos of conflict, a poignant romance blossoms between the protagonists, Asana and Antonio. Their intertwined destinies, marked by captivity and liberation, create a gripping and emotionally charged narrative.

Hughes masterfully intertwines historical accuracy with compelling storytelling, delivering an action-packed narrative that keeps readers engaged from start to finish. The portrayal of Asana and Antonio's evolving relationship, from captor and prisoner to passionate lovers, is both nuanced and captivating.

Asana, a Persian woman, and Antonio, a Pentarch (commander) of the Roman army, find themselves on opposing sides of the war, yet fate conspires to bring them together. The prophetic words of the sorceress Maren add a layer of intrigue, foreshadowing a bittersweet fate that hangs over the lovers' heads like a shadow.

While reading, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of hope mingled with despair, wishing for a different outcome, even as the fate of their circumstances became apparent. Hughes skillfully built tension throughout the narrative, keeping me on the edge of my seat as I rooted for Asana and Antonio against all odds.

With its blend of historical detail, passionate romance, and gripping plot twists, The Gardens of Byzantium is a captivating read that will leave readers eagerly awaiting more from J.F. Hughes. Highly recommended for fans of historical fiction and epic romance.

Book Review ~ 📚

Title : The Gardens of Byzantium
Author : J.F. Hughes

The compelling historical fiction The Gardens of Byzantium by J.F. Hughes is set against the turbulent backdrop of the battle between the Persian and Byzantine empires in 622 A.D. The story deftly interweaves the lives of the characters—Asana in particular—against the backdrop of human resiliency, love, and conflict.

Hughes paints a vivid picture of Asana's trip, which is characterized by turbulence and the terrible reality of war. Her story is compellingly set against the backdrop of the conflict of empires, which blends the scope of historical events with human suffering.

Because of her tenacity and ability to handle the turbulent circumstances in her life, Asana is the reader's favorite character in the book. Because of the striking contrast between her calm demeanor and the turmoil of war, readers will find it easy to identify with and support her throughout the narrative.

I heartily endorse The Gardens of Byzantium because of its vivid historical depiction, complex characters, and deft integration of individual storylines with the overall scope of historical events. For fans of historical fiction, Hughes' skill at narrative and the examination of the human spirit in the face of hardship make this book an engrossing and thought-provoking read.

I received this free book in exchange for an honest review. (Thank you CK Publicity.)

Firstly, the story was wonderful, but it was too short. The pace with which the characters and story was given was clipped. I would have liked to see more subplots and more of the characters themselves. There was also a rush of side characters that weren’t entirely developed.

Because the story was so short the relationship between the two main characters seemed off. I didn’t think the recently freed main female character should have rushed into a relationship with the main male character. She was a sex slave who was given to men almost every single night, always locked up, and suddenly she wishes to give herself yet again to a man she hardly knows? It didn’t seem right to me.

The ending was beautiful but again, short. Maybe that was very intentional but I wanted more fallout, more emotion, just more.

The amount of research that Hughes has done is obvious. He uses words that would have been spoken back then, he gets the scenery and intricacies of places correct, and even the socio-economic parts down too. It probably took a lot of effort and I really appreciated it.

Overall, this book is a good read. I would recommend it to someone who wants to pass the time. It just could have been a lot better with more content.

The Gardens of Byzantium by J.F. Hughes is a historical novel set in the early Byzantine Empire, during the reign of Constantine the Great, before the rise of Islam. The story follows two main characters: Antonius, a Roman military officer, and Asana, a Persian woman.

Antonius is introduced as a prisoner in a Persian jail, tortured but mysteriously sustained by food delivered by an unknown woman. After being freed by Roman troops, Antonius seeks revenge on his tormentors, killing one but obsessed with finding the commanding officer responsible for his suffering.

Asana, grieving the loss of her brother and searching for her father, is kidnapped and forced into slavery. Antonius rescues her from her captors in Constantinople and, instead of releasing her into further danger, risks his position by hiding her in his palace quarters. This act of protection confuses and frustrates Asana, who has experienced little kindness in life.

The novel is rich in irony and coincidence, and while the two protagonists find solace in each other, their happiness is threatened by external forces. The story offers a poetic exploration of timeless human passions and choices, with beautifully illustrated chapters and maps that bring the historical setting to life.

Set in the 7th century, The Gardens of Byzantium, is a heart wrenching story of two fated lovers bound and torn apart by war in Constantinople. Asana, our beautiful Persian heroine travels with her brother, Bahram, through dangerous cities, keeping alert of Romans at every turn. Antonius, a Roman soldier, captured by the Persians escapes death and vows revenge on his captors. As fate would have it, Asana and Antonius lives' intertwine and their beings will never be the same.

"You have looked upon your true love and not known him once. So you shall do so a second time, still not knowing. And fate is cruel. For when you finally see, it will be through bittersweet eyes, for the end will not be far off!"

J.F. Hughes has written a book that not only leaves the reader wanting more but, allows the reader to listen to musical accompaniments for each part of the book. One isn't just immersed by the story, but my the music, as well. I couldn't put the book down and patiently waiting for more...The Gardens of Byzantium

The story is set in the year 622 A.D. It was a time when the decades-long conflict between the Byzantine and Persian empires was at its most devastating. This novel captures the intensity of the epic war and the effect it had on the people on each side of the conflict. Hughes weaves a well-researched story that depicts a tumultuous time in history for humanity and an unexpected love story.
The writing was rich in detail and geographically accurate. It was an easy read, although I would have liked to see a little more interiority, rendering the thoughts and feelings of the main characters.
Asana, who is the daughter of a Persian commander, has to flee the city of Antioch as it is being sacked. With few possessions and her prize horse, she heads out into the desert, staying ahead of the Romans and beginning a search for her father.
Antonius is a Roman soldier who had been captured. After his own people rescued him, he vows to seek revenge against the Persians.
The story takes many turns, depicting the difficulties of life in the hotbed of war and the tragedy of love.

The Gardens of Byzantium is a intriguing romance by J F Hughes. I am a huge fan of historical fiction and this is my first experience in reading this time period in history. I loved the historical details that made me feel as though I had been travelled back in time. There were a few scenes that were slower than most but overall, the book was a great read.

I am giving The Gardens of Byzantium four stars. I recommend it for readers who enjoy reading historical romance. I would be interested in reading more books written by the talented J F Hughes to see where else they will take their fans.

I received a paperback copy of J F Hughes’ The Gardens of Byzantium from the publisher, but was not required to write a positive review. This review is one hundred percent my own honest opinion.

In this compelling historical fiction, the year 622 A.D. becomes a vivid tapestry for the clash of empires, love, and the human spirit. Hughes intricately paints a portrait of Asana, a soul swept through the deserts of war, her life a symphony of upheavals. The dance of captivation and mystery unfolds against the backdrop of Persian and Byzantine conflict, immersing readers in a captivating narrative. Hughes' storytelling prowess illuminates the harsh realities of the past, skillfully intertwining personal journeys with the sweeping forces of history.
The gripping tale takes us on a journey through landscapes, class divides, and the throes of war, leaving an indelible mark on the reader's imagination.
As the story hurtles towards its tragic conclusion, Hughes leaves us with a profound exploration of the resilience of the human spirit amidst the relentless march of time.

The author J.F. Hughs vividly portrays the hero, a Roman officer, captured in a brutal Persian prison. Then the story unfolds. This triggering event for all the other action, leads to death and romance, battles and war.

There is a fantasy element here as well as the leading lady has a prophecy spoken over her.

The one aspect of the book that may upset some is the use of a common romantic trope. Another offputting feature is a few explicit sex scenes. This book is not for children.

That said, the book is written with good rhythm, pacing, and symmetry. The reader receives a colorful impression of Byzantium near its peak of power. The characters are realistic with well-described motivations. The antagonists are human and sympathetic from their point of view.

I recommend this book for lovers of historical romances who don't mind some sex.

Do you read books by indie authors?✍🏼
We would love to read more, but sometimes the genre doesn’t fit with our typical taste. I was thrilled to read The Gardens of Byzantium by J.F. Hughes!
This is a beautifully written tragic tale, based on historical events. Set in 600 A. D. the Persian and Byzantine empires are at war, but this story focuses on Asana and Antonius, they couldn’t be more opposite, except the compassion in their hearts. Asana is the daughter of a Persian commander and Antonius is the enemy. You may think you know where this story is going, but you’re wrong!
I hope you get a chance to check out this exciting book! It’s a quick read, but has amazing depth and details, it will leave you wanting more!

The setting was much further in the past that I am used to and I really enjoyed the way this book was painted in my head. It was very well written, so I was able to picture all the places that were visited. Some of the humans were a little harder for me to envision because I kept seeing them with modern clothing on. This book was very well researched and many events as accurately portrayed as possible. The book did not end as I wanted it to, but I was able to predict the ending from before about 50% of the book.

For anyone who liked this era (622AD) of Historical Fiction, this is a wonderful book. I look forward to reading more from this debut author.

Thank you to the author for a copy of this book, this is my honest opinion.

Tapestry of history, romance & revenge

A story which offers a captivating blend of history, romance and the complexities of war and revenge, creating a story that lingers after the final page is turned.

I was particularly drawn to its rich historical context, making the grandeur and tragedy of the Byzantine Empire feel both immediate and real. The romantic tale at the story's centre is poignant and infused with a sense of longing and fate.

I also enjoyed the poetic passages that are dotted throughout, helping to evoke a particular mood or moment in time.

The novel explores the destructive cycles of war, the thirst for revenge, and the deep scars left in their wake. Recommended for anyone who enjoys historical fiction with depth and passion.

A Lyrical Tale of Love, War, and Destiny

The Gardens of Byzantium by J.F. Hughes is a stunning historical novel that immerses readers in the beauty and brutality of the 7th century. "The Gardens of Byzantium" is a hard-hitting tale of war/adventure tale set in the 7th century. As might be expected, there is much brutality and death in the tale, but there is also a romantic element. The Romans are at war with the Persians. Antonius has been captured by the enemy and is kept in a deep, dark pit. He is beaten to within an inch of his life and given barely enough food to survive. But a female sneaks food to him, an act of kindness that keeps him alive and prevents his spirit from crumbling. He is destined to see her again, but will it be too late for both of them? This is a well-written tale that ought to please fans of historical fiction!

A great epic, immersive and vibrant novel. The author takes us on a brilliant journey to the tumultuous past, immersed in war, in the enigmatic capital of the Byzantine Roman Empire, with exciting landscapes and immortal buildings like Hagia Sophia. Rarely does a historical novel so magically mix drama, love, war and the classism of an era. This novel is a magical journey with the added bonus of musical recollections by chapters that the author makes. It is recommended in every way to listen to the musical suggestions per chapter that he makes to us. It truly gives the reader an immersive experience that makes this book a library essential.

'When this war is over, I will make you my wife.'

There is just something about this book, I do not know what it is, but I really did enjoy it. I love how impactful it was for being on the smaller side. Being written as a warish love story just added to it. I have not read many like this and I found myself wanting more now. The story, Romans and Persians are at War and Antonius is captured. Being war, he is beaten and starved. Then Asana, being on the other side sneaks him food. The story is such a roller coaster and bittersweet. The toll war takes on, man, it pours into the words that is this book.

The trials of war and echoes of love

A story from the Byzantine empire that shows the harshness of battle and the tough challenges that confront people. The protagonist, Antonius, is a Roman soldier who survives the cruel confides of prison because of a stranger's love and returns to rule in the Roman army at Constantinople. Also woven into the story is Asana, a Persian woman. Her life takes a tragic turn as she searches for her father, lost in the struggles of battle. Devastating circumstances, irony, and the will to fulfill life permeates the story. A beautiful tale shown in its historical background. A story of life's ebb and flow, and the love people seek.
