This was a very intriguing story! It has magic, warlords, war between races, darker power and family bonds and huge personal growth among the main characters. The story starts out brutally! 😱 Thrown into a war scene with some hard happenings leading up to the first events that shape our two twin brothers that are some of the main characters 😉
Two brothers, born in war, raised in the forest by a whole village as extended family, a father that is troubled from his past and a darker power trying to rule the lands and dominate all the humans left! The straven will come with war and dark powers!
One day it all changes. A magiik decides that the two brothers will be the center of important happenings, and with his magic he is able to give them extraordinary powers. They meet some major challenges but thanks to the magiik they get a second chance in life.
Will their powers turn the tide of the war? Are they ready for this kind of power? Can they forgive their father for the past? Can he forgive himself to reunite with his sons?
This story was very exiting with several great plot elements that I really enjoyed! It’s a great start for this world and I’m looking forward to seeing where the author takes the story moving forward. I finished the story in two days so I was sucked in! Only comment I have is that the chapters should have had chapter headings telling which pov we were getting. Since we had multiple POV, including the dark villains pov. And this is a detail I really enjoy in these types of stories. To get a little view into the dark forces 🤩💀
All in all summarized to: Great job @mitchell_hill_author , this is a wonderful debut! I really enjoyed it and would gladly recommend for others to enjoy your universe! And also have to brag a little of the beautiful colors on the cover🤩❤️
It’s an intense story about two brothers, Broax and Akii, who seek revenge after a tragic event. The book starts with the brothers being born during a violent attack on their town, which leads to them losing their mother and living in isolation. As they grow up, they learn about their mother's sacrifice, which makes them want to avenge her death.
The twist in the story comes when they are killed in their first fight but are brought back to life with magical limbs by a mysterious character called a magiik. These new limbs make them stronger than before, and they continue their quest for revenge.
The story is not just about fighting and revenge; it's also about the brothers dealing with their feelings and questioning whether revenge is worth it. The magical limbs are not only powerful but also remind them of their past and the reasons for their fight.
The book is very engaging with its mix of real emotions and fantasy elements. It makes you think about the effects of seeking revenge and how it changes people. The story is exciting and makes you feel for the characters as they struggle between their human feelings and their desire for revenge.
Fantastic read overall, I enjoyed the set up the most I think was was done really well, I kinda wished the father was in it a little more. I also felt that the history could have been expanded a bit so it gave more context on why events were happening, but that didn't ruin the plot or pacing at all. It's very fast pace and lots of action scenes, which were well written. Highly recommend.
The story, characters and enthusiastic flair it is written with make for a really enjoyable debut. There is emotional punch, fleshed our characters and a sense of dread that keeps you page-flicking as you need to find out what happens next. The use of language, world building and narrative voice are also strong and interesting. Reading this with the enticing blurb sounds great, no?
Well, self published books can be of varying quality in terms of finished product.
The Augmented sadly falls into the not-quite-polished category. There are typos in nearly every book, so they aren't a particular bother for me, but there is A LOT of misused punctuation here, to the point where I was pulled out of the story by reading some sentences twice to make sure I hadn't misread it. There is also a rushed feeling where there are huge time skips of years that leads to the chapter after giving you a quick recap of what is different now, and it feels like this was a slightly lazy way of getting out of actually writing the events and telling the whole story. It also meant that it was hard to feel empathy with some of the characters. Telling me someone was cowardly in battle but never getting to see why this is the case doesn't have anywhere near the same impact.
To summarise: I think this is a great fantasy story about family and loss with some solid tropes done well, and enough plotting of the events and the world to make it worth exploring the book. It has all the markings of a DIY project though, so bear that in mind when going in.
The Augmented: The Awakening by Mitchell Hill is a gripping fantasy novel that takes readers on an intense journey of vengeance and discovery. The story centers on Broax and Akii, twin brothers whose lives are marked by tragedy from the moment of their birth during a violent sacking. Raised in isolation and trained in combat, their quest for revenge begins with the discovery of their mother’s ultimate sacrifice. However, death does not mark the end for them; instead, they are reborn with powerful, magically augmented limbs, setting them on a path of retribution. Hill crafts a dark and compelling tale, filled with intense battles, mystical powers, and a world brimming with intrigue. Fans of epic fantasy will find this a thrilling read.
I have come across the book thanks to some instagram review. And I am really pleased it has been recommended to me :) It is a debut novel and I truly enjoyed its freshness - I did not notice how the time flew by while I was reading! It is a great position for action/ adventure fantasy lovers - the story of two twin brothers raised in hiding in the forest, trained in battle and taking up their hero journey through the world full of enemies, but also - some allies on the way. Definitely a fun read with some good characters in it.
