Great Mystery!

Mistric, the second book in the Betty Foster Mystery Series, took me deeper into a journey of an intricate web of mystery, revenge, and moral dilemmas.  In this installment, the plot thickens as Betty Foster finds herself entangled in a web of deceit and danger that she can't easily escape. The book explores the consequences of revenge and the complexities of human choices, making it a captivating read for mystery enthusiasts.

The prologue sets the tone for the story, diving into Betty's inner struggles and the doubt that plagues her after seeking revenge on those who ruined her life. As the story progresses, each chapter unveils new layers of intrigue and mystery. Betty's unexpected arrest and the accusations against her turn her life upside down, leaving me questioning her innocence and the true motives of those around her.

The author,  Zee David  skillfully keeps us on our toes, making it challenging to predict the next twist in the plot. The characters are developed and multifaceted. The writing style is engaging and descriptive, allowing me to immerse myself in the world of the characters.  Overall, this is a great addition to the Betty Foster Mystery Series, offering a thought-provoking exploration of revenge, consequences, and the blurred line between right and wrong. Highly Recommend!

I haven’t read the first book in this series but I thought I’d take a chance and jump in reading book two. I didn’t have any difficulty as the author does a good job of explaining things with vivid detail. I could picture the setting and characters because the writing is descriptive and creative.

I enjoyed the suspense and tried to pick up on each clue so I could try to solve the mystery. It seems like an open and shut case but of course the reader knows there is much more to the story and from the beginning, I was along for the ride.

This is a murder mystery and it kept me intrigued the entire way through. It’s a real page-turner, keeping the reader wanting to find out more. The characters were fully fleshed out and believable. The writing is well done and the story moves along at a steady pace.

Mistric is a mystery novel written in multiple POV, which just makes the storytelling more intriguing as you attempt to solve the crime before the detective. But when the plot twists kept on coming and the characters reveal more of their true natures, it became harder to underestimate them. As we follow the story through the lens of each character, we find ourselves discovering not only what they've done but trying harder still to understand the bigger question of why. Just when I thought the ending was a satisfying one, the author threw me another curveball and I’m still reeling.

My takeaway quotes:

"...he owed a debt not only to my mother but also to the innocence of my younger self that he had callously disregarded."

"I craved justice. I thirsted for revenge."

"Sometimes, the true profit isn't in material gains, but in the knowledge that you possess the power to build or destroy others."

"I had realized how far the human mind was willing to go for something so evil."

One Hell of a Case-
I loved Book #2. Although I highly recommend reading the first book first, or you will be lost, it's totally worth it! The books aren’t long. I have read quite a few books by this author, and I think that this series is one of her best series (Yes, I’ve said that about another series, but this is one of the top two of her series). Zee David keeps you guessing throughout both books. I love the details that she puts in her books. You can picture the whole thing in your head, like it’s a movie or TV show—the movements of the characters, their expressions, small details like that. It makes such a difference when reading a good book. You can see it all.

This is exactly what a good mystery novel should be. It's like a puzzle; you start putting pieces together as Zee gives them to you, but starting in all different places (like the four corner pieces). And you have to wait until the right piece falls into place until you can start putting it all together. It starts to come together, and then BAM; the pieces don’t fit the way you thought they were supposed to. It's amazing; she gets me every time! I find myself saying “Holy Crap,” pretty much at least once in every chapter.

It's incredible what Betty had to go through. As a child and as an adult. And knowing who killed the Fosters now, so incredibly unexpected. Betty sure did have a crazy life. And what's insane is, she planned a lot of it, from what I understand. Revenge for the family. And then we met Edward. Crazy how he came up in that world, smart. But he’s lucky he didn’t get himself really disappeared. He was never a great guy from time lapses back and forth that David shows us. I love knowing about a character's past. Learning what made them the way they are. Edward is the definition of a straight sociopath narcissist. It's unbelievable that Betty went through all she went through and... Well, I’ll let you find that out when you read this, and you totally should if you love brilliant mysteries.

The ending was great as well, and we all know endings can be tricky for a lot of authors. After everything that so many people have been put through, that ending seemed totally appropriate. I am really hoping that the author makes a third book! It would become first on my TBR list!

Whew. Mistric by Zee David had me up way too late with my jaw on the floor and my brain doing mental gymnastics. Just when I thought I had a grip on Betty Foster’s world after M-Club, this book yanked the rug right out from under me—and I loved every twisted second of it.

Here’s the thing: Betty is no perfect heroine. She’s messy, secretive, and walking a tightrope of her own making. And in Mistric, things get real dark, real fast. The Fosters are dead—her family—and somehow all the evidence points directly to her. Only… Betty doesn’t remember what happened that night. That kind of gut-punch mystery, where the main character is just as in the dark as the reader? That’s my kryptonite.
What I love about Zee David’s storytelling is that it always feels like there’s something simmering just under the surface. You can’t trust anyone—not even Betty. Especially Betty. But even with all the lies and confusion, you can’t help rooting for her as she claws her way toward the truth (or at least a version of it she can live with).

There’s a tension that never lets up, and honestly, I couldn’t read fast enough. Every new reveal had me side-eyeing the people around Betty, wondering who knew more than they were saying, and wondering what secrets Betty might still be hiding from herself.

Mistric isn’t just a murder mystery—it’s a deep dive into the damage of secrets, the cost of survival, and the fear of your own past. If you like stories where the truth is just out of reach and every answer leads to three more questions, don’t sleep on this series. Betty Foster is the kind of flawed, layered, dangerous woman I can’t look away from. Bring on book three—I’m so not ready, but I’m all in.

Mistric from 2023 is an interesting who-done-it novella that begins with an elegant writing style in the prologue but becomes grittier as the book goes on, with multiple viewpoints to keep the story interesting.

In Mistric, one of the main characters, Betty, is accused of murdering the Fosters. Readers get her viewpoints throughout the book, as well as a few others, such as the detective’s, Maximus, who remains in Betty’s corner even when things look particularly bleak for her. I agree with other reviewers who said author Zee David did a good job of making things tough for Betty. That’s what protagonists must go through in fictional work to keep the plot stimulating.

The chapters in Mistric are short and the book moves along at a solid pace. Zee David has an interesting background (see her Amazon bio) and is a passionate writer. This is the second book of a series she created, so I’ll have to check out the plot of the first book.
