OHKUBO Atsushi

Atsushi Ōkubo ( 大久保篤), also romanized as Atsushi Ohkubo, is a Japanese manga author and fantasy artist known for his work on the manga series Soul Eater, which has been adapted into an anime. Okubo worked as an assistant under Rando Ayamine, on the manga series Get Backers. He also created artwork for various cards for the Lord of Vermillion game.

Atsushi Ōkubo was not a model student and was more attracted to drawing than to learning. At the age of 20, after finishing studies at a manga school where he met Rando Ayamine, the author of Get Backers, he became Rando Ayamine's assistant for two years. Finally, he won a competition at Square Enix's Gangan magazine with his first manga series B.Ichi and it was published for four volumes. After the end of his last manga, he created Soul Eater, still for Square Enix's Gangan magazine, which brought him worldwide success.

One small nitpick is that Soul & Black Star both look very similar when they are not wearing their, for want of a better word, superhero costumes. They are more often than not depicted in ordinary streetwear/casual clothing, hoodies etc. They have identical proportions, the anime style of the faces means that they actually both have the same face, it's in black & white (which is fine in & of itself) so that their hair colour looks the same, Black Star's shoulder tattoo is often covered up, and the only real distinguishing difference is that their spiky FF7 Cloud hairstyles are a slightly different shape. So I often cant tell which one of the 2 is talking/acting. The artist even removed Soul's drool, which was initially part of his character design. I think more should have been done to differentiate the 2 characters. Not the end of the world, this is still a good manga. Just wanted to get that one nitpick off my chest. Kthanxbai.

While I really didn't like the Hero chapter (seriously? DWMA is totally okay with allowing Hero to sexually harass and grope girls because he's strong?) he did get his comeuppance so I guess it balances out. That stain on the volume aside, I really loved this volume, especially Medusa's return. As I mentioned previously, I feel like Ohkubo had to keep Medusa in the story because of how fucking boring Arachne is as a character, and this volume is a perfect example. I have no idea whether Ohkubo was trying to be funny or meta with Medusa's conversation with Arachne, but the fact that Arachne chastises Medusa for doing most of the dirty work herself is...interesting. Especially because Arachne has done literally NOTHING since her introduction. Yes, I am aware that she's the mother of demon weapons, but holy SHIT is she boring as FUCK.

That aside, I really liked the chapter dealing with Dueling Arts, specifically how Maka had to realize that knowing absolutely everything about everyone (and even completely understanding them) isn't always necessary when it comes to friendship. This group of misfits each have their flaws and glowing moments, and sometimes acknowledging them as well as knowing that they have your back, is awesome. Yes, its very shounen-y and a little cliche, but I like how confrontational and aggressive Maka and Black Star are and its not just a little spat between friends. Also, adding the fact that they need their soul wavelengths to synchronize properly makes them needing to get along adds more stakes to the situation, which I enjoyed.

Finally, Kid going after the train was dope as fuck and I can now die happy having witnessed the entire mission. Also Patty was fucking hilarious and I loved how Kid specifically asked Patty for help and they had fun doing skateboard tricks on the dunes; its a subtle way of showing how Kid gets along with Patty, arguably the wild card of the trio. Final note, the clash between DWMA and Arachnophobia was also dope as fuck, I live for these fights.

Enough rambling, this was a great volume and I had a lot of fun as per usual.

La battaglia è imminente. Le parti si stanno riorganizzando. Un personaggio curioso forse inizia ad avere amici. Un personaggio un po' fastidioso se ne torna a nanna. Nelle nebbie del tempo si interrompe il racconto. Vedremo...

Aside from the DWMA’s dismissal of Hero being a creep towards the female students because of his strength (gross move as another reviewer already pointed out), this volume is EXACTLY the kind of content that makes this series thrive in my opinion! The balance between character growth, fight scenes and humour is excellently done, and this volume is very nicely paced! I also like some of the mystery elements that are established in this (very interested in learning about Death’s past) and am excited to see where these plot lines go!

Wow this one is just fight scenes and fanservice. Very little plot.
There's even a scene in which a teacher tells a group of girls it's their own fault for getting sexually assaulted by a fellow classmate. Low-key despicable

More of a bridge vol. Medusa is a textbook abusive as hell parent, Black Star is making progress, and I really could have done without the Excalibur & Hero bits, kinda gross and annoying.
