I love Shari Low's books so much. This one is part of her collection of books that take place on a single day. These aren't a series just a set of standalone books with one in the title. For some reason, these books really appeal to me. This particular title is a bit different as it all happens on Christmas Eve but to three different generations of women in three different timelines. Shari Low manages to handle the three different decades perfectly and all three threads weave together in a cohesive plot that seamlessly combines into an exciting ending.
The story has a bit of romance but it isn't the main focus of the book. I think that's why I enjoyed this so much. Don't get me wrong I love a good romance once in a while too but what appealed to me about this book is the fact that it is about relationships, mostly the mother-daughter kind. It also shows that you can love again and it's never too late to try. I could really relate to some of these situations and to the ladies. They were authentic, realistic, true to life and happy ever after perfection. All. The. Stars.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the Advance Readers Copy.
EXCERPT: 'Gran, I'm just going to tell you straight-up that I'm hating this story now. I thought I was getting scandal and frivolous romps. This is like one of those TV shows that make me ugly cry. If there's a lost dog or a graveyard coming up, I'm going to need sedation.' 'Hang on, love. I'm getting to the good bit. This is where your granddad steps in.' Her granddad. The loveliest man that there ever was. And what Gran told her next didn't change that opinion. Her granddad had swooped in and loved her gran back to happiness. He'd helped take care of Aunt Loretta too, and even though Gran had become pregnant soon after, he'd stuck by her, promised to love his baby and give them all a fantastic life. It was exactly what Eve would have expected of that absolute gem of a man. 'Okay, so wasn't that the happy ever after?' 'Aye, pet, it was . . . Until -'
ABOUT 'ONE CHRISTMAS EVE': Three women, three decades, three Christmas Eve moments that change their lives forever. On Christmas Eve, 1968, Cathy McLean receives a surprise visit from the lost love of her life and is forced to choose between the one that got away and the one that stayed. On Christmas Eve, 1993, Cathy’s daughter Helena is overjoyed to hear that her boyfriend is about to propose, until a devastating encounter threatens to bring her heartbreak instead of diamonds. On Christmas Eve 2023, a shocking discovery rocks Eve Quinn’s world. The only gift Eve wants this year is the truth. But will it take a Christmas miracle to unravel generations of secrets?
MY THOUGHTS: I loved this story. It is told from three points of view: Cathy - the family matriarch; Helena - her very self-contained lawyer daughter and mother of Eve; and Eve herself. There is a very particular reason Eve is called Eve, but you have to wait right until the end to find out!
The Christmas Eves are divided into two-hour chunks, and so we see what is happening simultaneously over the three different years. Sound confusing? It's not. It is diabolically clever and works really well.
Shari Low has a knack of tapping into readers' emotions and providing heart-wrenching moments counterbalanced by moments of sheer joy. Nothing is over the top. Not even the Christmas theme. The characters are relatable and realistic, the plot well-paced and perfectly plausible. One Christmas Eve is written with great feeling and humor. One moment my eyes would be brimming with tears, the next I was choking back laughter.
I enjoyed every moment of this read; a wonderful combination of drama, family saga, and romance with some subtle and intriguing twists.

THE AUTHOR: In real life, once upon a time she met a guy, got engaged after a week, and twenty-something years later she lives near Glasgow with her husband and a labradoodle. DISCLOSURE: Thank you to Boldwood Books via NetGalley for providing a digital ARC of One Christmas Eve of Summer by Shari Low for review. All opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own personal opinions.
This one grabbed my attention from the first page and wouldn’t let go!
It may be my favourite Christmas book of 2023.
If you’ve read and enjoyed any of her “One ..” novels, you’ll want to pick this one up.
I’ve come to love Shari Low’s writing because she focuses on things we can all relate to, like female friendships, love, commitment, family, making choices, and/or dealing with consequences AND she’s got an uncanny ability to tap into readers’ emotions like I’ve never seen before!
In short, this one is about three generations of women whose lives were forever changed one Christmas Eve.
Things I loved: ✔️action takes place over one day - Christmas Eve - in two-hour chunks ✔️three threads; three storylines set in three decades ✔️one family - three generations ✔️not overly ‘Christmassy’; just enough holiday magic ✔️equally absorbing timelines ✔️unexpected twists ✔️great pacing ✔️second chances ✔️exploration of how decisions made in the past impact each daughter in succession ✔️exploration of how maturity/age/time/necessity intermingle when making a decision ✔️captivating and bittersweet ✔️the characters!
Stuffed with plenty of secrets balanced well by emotional highs and lows, this is one book you’ll want to put on your Christmas reading list!
I was gifted this copy by Boldwood Books and NetGalley and was under no obligation to provide a review.
Cathy, 1968: When her lost love comes for a visit, Cathy has to decide whom she will choose and what it means for her future.
Helena, 1993: As an aspiring solicitor, Cathy’s daughter is her opposite in every way. Yet, she is delighted by the prospect of formalizing her relationship with her boyfriend. Until she finds something she’d rather not have.
Eve, 2023: Her life turns upside down when the DNA test reveals a hidden truth. But how is it possible, and who will answer the questions? Can Eve find the truth after all these years?
The events take place on Christmas Eve, from morning to night. The alternative chapters show the storyline of the main characters and their lives, bringing everything together at the end. The story comes in the third-person POV of three main characters – Cathy, Helena, and Eve.
My Thoughts:
Having read the previous two books in this not-a-series, I knew what to expect from this one. The book takes us through the lives of three people in different years but on the same day – Christmas Eve.
Cathy is a 75-year-old woman, Helena’s mom and Eve’s grandma. She is cheerful, fun-loving, and like a warm hug that would make anyone feel better. Easily my favorite character in the book. Eve is twenty-nine, successful in her career as an agent to actors. She is sweet, cute, and easygoing. Her arc is decent, too.
Now, I’m not sure if Helena was deliberately written that way or if there’s a gap in idea and execution. I disliked her almost throughout the book. Except for that last chapter from her POV (which is redemption a little too late, IMO), it’s hard to empathize with her. Mind you, this comes from someone who prefers to be in control of emotions. However, Helena is more like a robot even before things ‘went wrong’.
The side characters are okay, and none except Richie, Duncan, and Loretta get enough space to be anything other than props.
The writing is easy enough to read and tries to minimize repetition, which I appreciate. Since the pacing is slow, repetition could have further weighed it down. There are still some, but it cannot be helped given the choice of presentation.
Christmas, as such, doesn’t play a major role in the plot. It’s there in the background and gives the feel, but that’s it. If you want an exclusive Christmas story, this may not work.
The revelation and the climax feel too easy. The lack of drama is good, but I wouldn’t have minded if things were a wee bit hard. I mean, it feels so simple when a character laments about something throughout the book and gets it with almost no effort at the end. However, Cathy’s track is adorable, and I do like it the best.
A couple of twists are thrown in to keep the readers interested. I did guess one, but I did guess the other. In fact, I figured that right at the beginning when the character was introduced. No complaints, but exploring this a little instead of summing it up at the end would have made things feel a little real.
The cover is beautiful! I love the color combination and the joyful vibes it gives. There’s an epilogue too (hurray).
To summarize, One Christmas Eve is a Hallmarkish cozy family saga with some secrets, second chances, and reunions. It’s quite lighthearted and enjoyable.
Thank you, NetGalley and Boldwood Books, for the eARC. This review is voluntary and contains my honest opinion about the book.
It was a lovely story, I liked the three women and enjoyed reading their stories. It was sweet, romantic and a perfect Christmas read. It was my first book by this author. I can't wait to read more of her books.
The perfect Christmas read, the book shines with all things Crimbo and if this story does not have you feeling warm and happy and wanting it to be that special time then nothing will Set in Glasgow on Christmas Eve 1968,1993 and 2023….each featuring a different member of the family ie Nan,Mum and Daughter the book and its stories all come together in what has to be the best ‘feel good’ moments read in a book in a long time….more than that I can’t say but you start to feel the bubble of excitement as the book starts and then it all explodes in a Christmas Finale to make you cheer with that warm happy Christmas feeling Loved everything about this book and would recommend for the lead up to the Season or the week itself or even now in August, reading bliss at it’s best….
Three Christmas Eves, three generations of women whose lives are irreparably changed by events that connect their stories in surprising ways. As their secrets are revealed and opportunities for new beginnings and love arise, the magic of Christmas brings them all together for a special celebration. This was my first book by Shari Low, I will definitely be reading more of her novels.
This was a lovely story from Low and a warming way to get you into the festive spirit. Once again, this is a story that takes place over twenty four hours, with the added twist that it focuses on three decades.
Daughter, mother and grandmother have their stories told in this novel, with the book opening with daughter Eve, discovering that her father is not who she thought he was. In a complete turmoil, Eve knows she needs to find out more but Christmas Eve is not the best of times with her mother’s birthday and her grandmother moving house. With her mother’s story, Helena, telling of a Christmas Eve in 1993, the more you read, the more it is evident that this day has a significant impact on Eve.
Helena and Cathy’s story are all linked to Eve’s, even if Cathy’s takes place in the 1960s. It was interesting to see how the same day unfolded for each woman, decades apart but with life-changing consequences. I felt connected to all narratives and enjoyed how Low cycles between the characters, taking readers back in time and reliving the same period over again.
Despite taking place on Christmas Eve however, I don’t think this was too tinsel-fied because there was so much more going on in the narrative. Exploring a family history is the theme of this story and I enjoyed seeing the ties that bind these women together, beyond a shared set of genetics. Helena’s story was one of the more surprising and whilst I did predict the outcome, I liked seeing how her character altered under such a high-tension situation – the complete opposite to her fun-loving mother, Cathy.
This was another great read from Low that I really enjoyed. It is a great “warm-up” read for Christmas and I liked seeing how the same day was lived so very differently over the decades.
With thanks to Boldwood books and NetGalley for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This is the first Shari Low book I've read and I just loved every single page. It was very very hard to put it down so I could go to work. Daughter, mother, grandmother, separated by decades, living their lives and choosing paths that will affect them all. An emotional and surprising ending where all the secrets and unknown family bonds are revealed. A love so strong that never fades for almost 60 years!
One Christmas Eve is actually about three Christmas Eve's.
Three generations of women all have significant things happen to them on a Christmas Eve.
Cathy tells her story in the 1960's, Helena tells hers in the 1990's and Eve's story takes place in the current timeline.
With the title I was expecting a little more holiday vibe from the book. There really wasn't that much. However, it is still a great story. The women each all have their secrets and much different personalities. A few twists along the way made for an interesting book.
I would recommend this book to anyone who likes a good family saga type book.
Thanks to netgalley and Boldwood Books for the arc.
This is a beautiful story about 3 women, from 3 generations whose stories are told on their most memorable Christmas Eves; 1968, 1993 and 2023. I enjoyed every minute of this epic love story. Love between family, mothers and daughters, couples and friends.
This was, by far, my favorite holiday read of the year! I will definitely check out more from this author.
«Ніколи не погоджуйся на щось менше, ніж велике кохання»
Чудова книжка, щоб почати з нею читацький рік. Різдвяна і абсолютно казкова. Несправедливо, що вона й досі не має екранізації, щоб перетворитися на той фільм, котрий традиційно передивлятимуться кожного святкового сезону.
I have loved all the previous "One" stories by Shari Low so was pleased to gave been gifted this latest copy by Netgalley and Boldwood Books, I'm under no obligation to leave my review Shari writes novels that you can relate to, her characters are realistic, with the normal everyday issues that we all have. The "One" series all take place over one day and are lighthearted and heartwarming. This novel takes place over 24 hours on Christmas Eve and centres on 3 generations of the McLean family. In 1968 Cathy is preparing for the birth of her first child but meets a face from the past 1993 and workaholic Helena is celebrating her birthday eve and looking forward to an evening with her parents and boyfriend Bruce 2023 and Eve has discovered devastating news from a DNA test. The actions of the past have consequences in the future and this comes back to a women over the space of the day. I loved the relationship between Eve and her Gran Cathy, Cathy has some real funny one liners. A great read at any time, not just for Christmas
Three women, three decades, three Christmas Eve moments that change their lives forever...
One Christmas Eve is set in Glasgow on Christmas Eve in 1968, 1993 and 2023. Each year features a member of the same family: Grandmother - Cathy, her daughter Helena and granddaughter Eve. The story starts with Cathy marrying someone after giving up the idea that her first love will return to her. In 2023, Eve knows that something has been kept from her for 25 years, and all she wants for Christmas is the truth. Each woman has a romance or love story and they come together in an amazing way.
I loved this story. It is full of Christmas magic and I thought it was a wonderfully written story to bring this family together and discover some surprises along the way. They are all great characters, who made some mistakes in life, but made the most out of what they were dealt. There were several heartbreaking and heartwarming moments in this book and my emotions were all over the place. I don't want to spoil this story, so am not going to say much else. Apparently, Shari Low has several books that are set in a 24 hour period, so I will be looking for some of them. I highly recommend this wonderful, magical Christmas story.
This was a lovely book. Set in three time lines which made it more enjoyable. Very entertaining and at times funny, I raced through this one as I couldn't put it down. My thanks to netgalley and the publishers for giving me the opportunity to read this book in return for an honest review.
Well, I must say that "One Christmas Eve" left me with rather mixed feelings. While it certainly wasn't a disappointment, it didn't quite measure up to the standard set by some of Shari Low's previous works. The alternating chapters between the past and the present added an intriguing dynamic to the narrative, though I found myself more captivated by the historical aspects than the contemporary ones. The gradual revelation of past events certainly piqued my interest and added depth to the storyline. However, when it came to the much-anticipated reunions, I couldn't help but feel a twinge of dissatisfaction. In this instance, the sparks that usually fly off the pages in a Shari Low novel seemed a tad lacklustre. Perhaps my expectations were set too high, but I missed that signature energy that I've come to associate with this author's characters. Undoubtedly, the festive spirit was woven masterfully throughout the narrative. Still, I must admit that picking up a Christmassy tale in the middle of August wasn't the wisest of choices on my part. My seasonal timing aside, I've noticed a recurring pattern in Shari Low's older characters – they all seem to possess that same quirky personality that's become a hallmark of her writing. However, I can't help but yearn for a touch more diversity in characterisation, something beyond the familiar 'eccentric yet endearing' archetype. All said and done, "One Christmas Eve" did provide a light-hearted and enjoyable read. It had moments of charm and wit but didn't quite surpass my expectations. It's true that the narrative fell short of some of the author's more impactful pieces. Nonetheless, as a dedicated reader of Shari Low's works, my expectations might have been set unrealistically high. So, if you're seeking a cosy, Christmassy read, this book could be a delightful choice. Just don't expect it to be an instant classic among the author's repertoire.
Three women, three decades, three life changing Christmas Eve moments is the setting for this beautiful story.
1968: Twenty-one year old Cathy is married, pregnant, and the love of her life returns.
1993: Twenty-five year old Helena finds out her boyfriend is supposed to propose to her on Christmas Eve, but is it merely a business deal.
2023: Twenty-nine year old Eve gets news through a DNA test that the man she thought was her father isn't. So, who is Eve's father?
Each chapter focuses on the same two hours of Christmas Eve across the years and what happens to each woman as the story unfolds. The book follows this format throughout until the end when past converges with the present.
Example: 8:00 am-10:00 am Chapter one: Eve Quinn December 24, 2023 Chapter 2: Helena Mclean December 24, 1993 Chapter 3: Cathy (Farmer) Mclean December 24, 1968
I enjoyed this book and how Shari Low brought the three timelines and the stories of the woman together. A heartfelt, romantic love story. Grandmother Cathy tells her granddaughter Eve, "Don't ever settle for less than a great love."
Below the lines are notes for me to remember the ending to this book. ------------------------------------------------
1968 Cathy Mclean: Twenty-year old Cathy is married to Duncan Mclean and pregnant with their first child. Cathy and Loretta are sisters whose parents were killed when their drunk taxi driver ran a red light. Cathy becomes Loretta's legal guardian at seventeen, Lorettas is thirteen years old. Cathy's first love Richie Clark is looking to have a future with her when his mother approaches Cathy stating if she really loved Richie she would let him leave for a job opportunity to work as a marine engineer. Cathy pushes Richie to leave. A year and half later he returns to Glasgow to pledge his love for Cathy to find out she is married and pregnant. While sitting on a bench in the garden Cathy goes into labor on Christmas Eve. Richie gets Cathy to the hospital, gets in contact with Loretta, and shows up at the trains station finding Duncan saying he worked in the hospital when Cathy came in in labor. Cathy and Duncan have a wonderful life. Once Duncan passes away Cathy sells her house and moves into a retirement building with a small apartment on Christmas Eve 2023. Once she is settled in she sees Richie sitting on the very bench she sat with him over fifty years ago. It turns out Richie is the owner of the building and is a widow with one son Harry. Richie pledges his love for Cathy and a year later on Christmas Even 2024, Richie and Cathy get married in the garden.
1993: Helena Mclean: Twenty-five year Helena learns her boyfriend Bruce Quinn is going to propose to her on Christmas Eve which is also her birthday. After stopping by his favorite lunch place to surprise him she finds him snuggled up with their colleague Bree Halston. Bruce has been seeing Bree for about a year before and then he started dating Helena six months ago. Bruce is an up and coming attorney whose plan is to merge his personal life with Helena in order to get ahead in her father Duncan's law firm. Helena goes to dinner with her parents at a hotel on Christmas Eve and has a one night stand in the bathroom resulting in a pregnancy. She assumes the father is Bruce, Bruce never gets over her getting pregnant because he never wanted any children, however they get married to both further their careers. Eventually, they end up divorced when Bruce has an affair which results in twin sons. It turns out the man Helena slept with on Christmas Eve 1993 was Harry Clark and he is the father of Eve. Making Richie her grandfather.
2023: Eve Quinn: Twenty-nine year old Eve Quinn finds out through a DNA test that Bruce isn't her father. She has a cousin named Bethany who is a DNA match. Bethany is Betty's daughter. Betty is Harry's sister. Eve finally finds out who her real father is on Christmas Eve 2023 and it is Harry Clark, Richie's son.
Epilogue 2024: Cathy and Richie are married, Helena and Harry are dating, Eve has a new boyfriend named Nick. She breaks off the friends with benefits relationship with Sonny after her grandmother tells her "Don't ever settle for less that a great love." She doesn't know if Nick is that great love, but she wants to find out.
Outstanding book from the incredibly talented author Shari Low. As with all of this author’s previous books this story takes the reader by the hand and introduces them to the story and lives of three generations of a family, documenting their lives on each Christmas Eve and telling their stories.
The three women are gran, mum and daughter, all of whom are completely different and their tales of love, loss and betrayal unfold across the years.
A beautiful story and so well told you will be hooked. The characters are developed and you will feel their joy and sadnesses by the end. I would love to see a sequel to this to see how their stories have evolved.
Highly recommend read.
Many thanks to Netgalley, the author and the publisher for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.
