This is book two of the Dragon Defenders of Destia series and the main characters are Eva Thirsk, now a dragon rider and first year student at Fairspell, with strong earth magic, and her dragon Perrell. She has gone back home to the farm near Flaxton where she was raised to see the people she thinks of as family, for a bit of a break after events in the capital, when news comes in of a large number of refugees from villages closer to the borders with Fantis, to escape whatever has been happening there. Rumours of whole villages being turned to glass raise alarm, especially with Eva knowing that the king and others in the palace in the capital, were themselves turned to glass in an attack. Eva and some others were the ones that stopped the Fantisian wizards from turning everyone in the royal family! Prince Francis, who has taken over since the king is incapacitated, arrives at the farm and wants to know if Eva will join his small team in search of Warlock Venistrare and to stop his dangerous and evil magic spreading. He has also asked her friend Oliver, a water mage, to join them. Eva has been chosen because she can sense Venistrare’s magical signal, but she has to be fairly close to him or some object he has infused with his magic. But she is keeping secrets from all of the team, as none of them know of her ability to reflect magic back onto the user, and also the more shocking tidbit that she is descended from the warlock’s sister Serena’s line! She can harmonise different types of magic, even from other people, and combine them giving her much stronger magic. Only problem is that she hasn’t had much magical training and sometimes her best intentions ends up going haywire and hurting others!
Those who can use more than one type of magi are thought to be dangerous and most have been killed off over the years, or escaped over to Fantis like Venistrare, where magic use and training was more relaxed and allowed. If the team and especially the prince or Oliver find out she can use more than one kind of magic and about her bloodline, she believes they won’t act very well and she could see herself locked up or worse. She had been hoping that her burgeoning friendship with Oliver would become much more, once they both returned to school, but secrets always have a way of coming out, at the worst possible moment! She has already done so much more than anyone ever expected of her, bonding with a pack dragon, having magic and not being part of a wealthy family like Oliver and all other magic users, becoming so much more powerful after being tricked into unlocking the warlock’s prison and so much more. She has had to fight her way to the point she is at now and is determined to use what she has, to save Destia from the forces of their foes and the warlock’s influence. She knows she is probably the only one who might be able to stop him, but the prince isn’t going to allow her to go off alone to face him, and she will have to prove that her way will work without hurting others. Her magic abilities are forbidden in Destia and it will be dangerous for her to show others what she can do.
Eva had just been making inroads into fixing her relationship with Carina, the daughter of the couple who raised her, finally understanding all that Carina had also gone through and their differences when Eva ran away to become a dragon rider a year ago, only then finding out the reality of magic users and the divide between the rich and the poor. Fellow student Winnie is a big help in this story, using her skills to work with the scholars to figure out why the people turned to glass had not reverted back once the warlock or wizards had left, as normal magic spells lose their power after the caster has left, or after a time. But the warlock has been experimenting with dark magic for decades and has stolen magic from so many other magic users, his magical signature and spells are impossible to unravel. Winnie supplies a hint of something that might help Eva to solve this magic and is a great help in the final battle against him. Eva has a lot to overcome in this finale, coming face to face with the mad warlock himself, whose vision for the future is so twisted by madness and a hatred for his own family and any royalty! Her secrets are revealed and those she thought of as friends, suddenly turn against her, when all she has ever wanted to do was be a dragon rider and help protect Destia and its people. A lovely sense of spirit when matters return to her home town, whilst a foe becomes an ally to redeem himself, and Evan must go against those in charge and disobey her orders, knowing she is the only one that can stop the teams of wizards Venistrare has taken over and the warlock himself. So much adventure, but also a sense of getting to know yourself and finding forgiveness. Lots of maturity and a sense of what is right and what she must do, even if she might lose everything and everyone who is important to her and her future. Cracking ending as it builds up to the finale, with loss along the way and lots of things to learn, even at this crucial time. She has come a long way from the farm and being a squire to others, as has her relationship with Perrell.
