Rate this book
Welcome to the Royal Rider Military Academy, where only the ruthless survive.

Twenty-year-old Ainsley No-Name is nothing. She’s less than nothing. Just another faceless orphan stealing to feed her foster brothers and sisters. When three men snatch her off the street and drag her into the woods, she knows it’s the end.

Until she came.

Scales the color of flame and brimstone, a dragon drops out of the sky and saves her. With that, the sacred bond between rider and dragon is formed…
…and her execution is set in stone.

In Adalinda, there is one law held above all else. Any peasant who bonds with a dragon will be put to death.
Left with no choice, Ainsley claims the only royal line that can’t be traced. The Royal House of Boreen, daughter of the missing Queen Kisandra, and heir to the throne of Adalinda.

A simple plot to keep her life and her dragon becomes anything but. The powers behind the throne will not bow down to a mysterious waif who appeared out of nowhere, and his name is Dominic Roark.

Handsome, powerful, infuriating, teasing Dominic wants her dead. He wants the dragon she stole from him. He wants the throne she claimed as her birthright.

Their enemies are getting stronger, bolder, and closer. With each strike from the shadows, they're bringing Adalinda to the brink of a war the kingdom won't survive.

But Dominic... his war is with her.

Broken Wings is the first book of the Broken Legacy series. This M/F fantasy romance has dragons, enemies that become lovers, and orphan thieves who become so much more.

Look… I wasn’t expecting this so be a masterpiece but I was hoping for more than a 1.5 star read.
This isn’t a 1 star as it has a few tiny redemptive bits. I can see how others would love it. Would I recommend it? Depends on your expectations going into a fantasy.
The writing was okay but the characters lacked consistency within their personalities. The romance was so up and down and it was so completely cringe worthy to watch.
The main character seems to have this ‘amazing’ relationship with her sexuality in the beginning which completely and utterly dissipates by the 50% mark and suddenly she’s viewing herself as a little more experienced than a nun.
There were some very nice annaologies and I loved Reyna and her character but that’s it. I wanted to love it. But I didn’t.

So this book was kind of all over the place for me. There were moments that I really enjoyed… And then there were moments when I felt like we were never going to get to the point. The love story was the same up down and all around. I really wanted to love the story, because I was looking for some thing to hold me over after Fourth Wing. I didn’t absolutely love the story… But I didn’t hate it either.

The FMC needs a lot of development, this was rough. She looked incredibly weak with no redeeming qualities.

The dirty talk…real awk.

I loved the idea of a dragon riders enemies to lovers romance but this novel fell short. Ainsley allowed Dominic to have her put to death with no remorse. Yeah!! What you kill me and then we marry. It was insta forgiveness. The fantasy aspect was okay but I would’ve liked more dragons and banter. There were some steamy scenes. There was a cliffhanger but it wasn’t overly intense.

DNFed. Are you for real? It was quite good, I even laughed like I haven't in a long time, until it wasn't. How can you change a character's personality SO MUCH in a heartbeat?? I'm so disappointed. Disgusted even.

What a disaster of a plot. The first 50 pages set the tone for this book, sloppy, confused and badly written.

Definitely wouldn't recommend.

Anne McCaffrey was my first introduction to dragon riders. While I remember nothing and would be disappointed to read a non-steamy version, I loved the series in my early youth. Then came Fourth Wing.
. This is an obvious attempt to gather some of the funds from eager readers desperate to find another book like that new series. I don’t care. It’s Ruby Vincent, and I have loved some of her other writing.

R.A. Vincent writes dark, romantic, enemies-to-lovers, so I read “Broken Wings” with a desperate desire for all the teasing, groping, angsty love I could get. The romance is the focus in this story:

“I never said I wanted to sleep with—”
Dominic closed the distance and captured my lips.”

Every time they got together, I felt a little flush up my neck. Yes! There are multiple moments of almosts, leading up to one long sex-filled dream. To be honest, the sex scene was too long for my taste, but you can skip forward.

“Clever and unconventional Are you trying to appeal to my sense of shame? It’s not personal, Princess. I told you, I’ve got an embarrassing, pants-tenting thing for you.”

The tension between the two is natural at first, and I loved little-miss-underdog using witty methods to keep up with the magic users. So does Dominic, despite thinking the little thief, Ainsley, stole his dragon.

Dragons bond with magic-users [superheroes] from the noble class. All commoners are killed if bonded to a dragon, allowing the dragon to bond again to a favored child. Knowing this, Ainsley pretends to be a child of the lost queen, and some nobles are ecstatic for her return. General Roark is not amused, and he charges Dominic with her eradication.

The amount of cleverness, conniving, and downright plot twists was smart and devious. Don’t read this if you want a cute and fluffy novel to cuddle with! I loved every moment of cleverness.

The Magic:
— Supposedly, the magic types were limited to air, earth, fire, and water. But during the story we discover there are many more unclassified abilities. The students are designated “fodder” at the same time General Roark surrounds himself with the most useful of them.

The Dragons:
— Have a hive mind.
— Also have types, but they aren’t necessarily of the elements. There is a Shadow dragon, for example.
— Ainsley’s dragon treated her as a fledgeling and Dominic as if still bonded. I love this and expect the next book to address this. Ainsley was too inexperienced and should rebond with a less-capable dragon who could learn with her.

The friends:
—Ormr: i get the idea this person had extra baggage down there 👀or was androgynous
—Maili: best known for her flagrant assignations with Poet, another student.
—Amwram: I probably misspelled his name. Known for his mud-smurfs and…well, he was a character. I don’t want to give away a plot twist.

General Roark: 32 offspring?!? Oh, word.

The instructors were harsh. Really, really harsh. But since this was a superhero story, no one stayed maimed.

I loved the first 70% of the story. While I was disappointed that Ainsley was a relative of the queen and had powers, what should I expect after bonding a dragon? But the last part seemed like the story took a left turn into dementia. It was jarring and left me cold. Ainsley also just aggravated me. She was so clever, yet she just could not give up the idea that Dominic was lying to her, without evidence.

I came for dragons and drama, and all I got was a confusing magical migraine and a romance with the emotional stability of a wet sock.

This book was marketed to lovers of Fourth Wing, and like a desperate dragon girl with zero impulse control, I took the bait. And honestly? I should’ve spat it back out like a suspicious potion offered by a shady warlock in a back alley. The only real similarities here are: dragons, a war college, and powers. Everything else? Distant cousins at best. Estranged, even.

Let’s start with the good: the plot? Intriguing. Twisty. Full of chaotic potential. The dragons? Excellent. Gold star. I would die for them. The magic system linked to their bond? Honestly cool as hell, and I’d like to file a formal adoption request for that concept alone.

But now, let’s talk execution. And by that I mean: it yeeted itself off a cliff.

The worldbuilding? It was like reading through a fogged up window. Everything was there, technically, but smudged and disjointed, and I had to guess half of what was going on. I wanted to be immersed. Instead, I was waterboarded by info that arrived too late or not at all.

Now. The romance. THE ROMANCE. Ainsley and Dominic went from zero to “let’s trauma bond and suck face” with whiplash inducing speed. There was no build up. No tension. No development. Just immediate feelings from hate to love pulled out of the plotline like a rabbit out of a chaotic, emotionally unstable hat. Their connection had the depth of a kiddie pool and the consistency of a drunken donkey’s fart. And yet somehow, I kept reading. Because this book massively gives “your favourite trash tv show” vibes that you know isn’t great but you can’t help watching it anyway.

Ainsley, our FMC, thinks she’s a strong, independent woman, but bless her, she’s also a walking contradiction. She talks big but makes decisions like she’s on a caffeine crash after doing zero research. Honestly? I would love her more if she just admitted she was winging it 24/7 like the rest of us. And the rest of the characters? Inconsistent. Like a DnD party where everyone forgot what vibe they were going for halfway through session one.

The spice… 💀 It gave me secondhand embarrassment. Like reading smut in front of your nan, but your nan wrote it. I was cringing so hard I momentarily left my body.

All that said, some scenes made me laugh. Hard. Was that intentional? Absolutely. The writing style sometimes felt like a parody of itself, but then suddenly tried to be dark and tragic and I was like, “Ma’am… the tone. Pick one.”

Would I recommend this? Only if you’re drunk, bored, or emotionally attached to dragons and chaos. Am I reading book two? Yes. Because I already own it, I make questionable decisions, and I believe in second chances. Will I read book three? TBD. Depends if book two redeems itself or just gives me literary whiplash again.

Final thoughts: I don’t regret reading it… but I do feel like I just walked out of a very weird theme park ride. One where the dragons were cool, the romance was confusing, and someone definitely threw up on the lore.

This book was pretty average, not going to lie. Although still good! It definitely has Fourth Wing vibes if you were in to that, although not near as good.

This is a story about an orphaned girl who grew up extremely poor with multiple other kids in an orphanage who were all abandoned or surrendered by their parents due to not being able to take care of them. All of the people that don’t have money are looked down upon, and you only got an education if you had money/status. She accidentally bonds with a dragon, then goes to the city to train with the dragon. All of the dragon riders must go into the military-like service. And then basically a love story, but to be honest I have no idea who deems this a love story at all because their relationship is nothing more than them hating each other and then somehow falling in love?? This book definitely left more to be desired, especially in the love department. The characters seemed very flat and basic, hard to be likable when they both act like teenagers and not adults who are training with dragons. Overall, it was good and interesting enough for me to finish it, but I didn’t love it that’s for sure.

Okay. WOW. I had some moments I absolutely loved reading. Some scenes where I was cracking up. Omg those were the best. But others I was very confused.
Sometimes I didn’t know who certain characters were or who was currently talking. It felt like my brain was glitching and I was horribly lost.
It was kinda cringe in the beginning but I promise you it did get better. I was just really desperate for a read, so that was the only real reason why I kept going. But I did get to enjoy the story line. And I enjoyed the moments with the love interest.
The ending was something sad and powerful, but that twist?!!. Another book I read prior to this. The author ended the story with a crazy plot twist too, but failed to leave clues and details about a connection between the two characters. This story’s betrayal felt to me put in, in the same fashion. I would have like some clues in the twins relationship with the main character. Something that would have hinted to us of this dislike with her. It would have felt more natural, because no one can just be that good at hiding their true feelings. Especially something that deep.

Honestly not sure if I liked it or not yet. 😕 I will be doing a re read as I only listened to the audio and I'm not sure if it was the narrator or the FMC herself who drove me crazy, almost dnf it but the twists in the story kept me interested and I wanted some questions answered, some twists and turns that I did predict and others that I didn't.

The main female character started off with alot of potential to be a total badass but it felt like the more she learnt the less confident she became and she just bothered me mostly, the romance I suppose could be classed as slow burn or enemies to lovers or insta love, I don't know I'm still completely confused on that front. The fantasy world was quite interesting and so many cool and different characters that I would like to see more of in book 2, The ending mostly just had me saying "huh" I feel like it had huge potential but it just wasn't delivered

Read this because I needed something to fill the void after reading Onyx Storm in the Forth Wing series. I wanted that dragon rider fantasy again and this seemed promising.

I was initially hooked from the beginning of the story. It had a great premise and set itself up to have really good archs. However, halfway through I began to feel as if the story became a bit stagnant. We were still progressing but it seemed like fairly long chapters with not enough payout in them.

There were quite a bit expedition dumps with pivotal information that I felt could’ve been delivered better. For instance, the information on her origin was just given to us in a random conversation and that was a HUGE deal to the overall plot of the story.

Overall the problems I had with the book were fairly minor. The last few chapters REALLY made up for some of the lulls and the several twists had me on the edge of my seat until the very last word.

Great Job R.A. Vincent! Looking forward to book 2!

I liked the storyline, different. I liked the enemies to lovers theme however, there’s no way would I fall in love or stay in love or forgive someone that set me up to then be murdered/killed. Yes, I mean die. She dies because of he sets her up knowing this will happen. And then makes sure the information comes out so she’s taken care of. Thus taking the murdering part away from the lover and making someone else do it instead. No freakin way - there’s just no way a sane woman would say “I know this is not really you and you didn’t want to do this” when he keeps telling you he did it so you could die and he is that bad. Overall the storyline and their attraction is great but this part just kept me saying no freakin way. Sooo. When she comes back to life, I would have killed him. End of story, bring in 2nd good looking hunk for new lover.

2/5

I read this book while waiting for Iron Flame to arrive in the mail because I wanted a nice dragon adventure romance to tide me over... But you should save yourself the time and skip this one.

At first, I thought the lying about the FMC's identity was an intriguing plot point, but then Vincent pretty summarily dismissed that within the first 100 pages. So, what you're left with is an academy-style book that never quite establishes a fleshed out system of magic, an economic or political system, or a compelling romance. The FMC and MMC had some sparks in a classic enemies-to-lovers way, and there was an intriguing OW subplot, but the actual falling in love part was super rushed and underdeveloped. Sigh.

The story telling was a bit clumsy but it has potential…However, the romance was a bit too insta-lovey for my tastes.

Ainsley was a clash of overwhelming weakness and strength at misplaced times. This is a pattern I’ve noticed with RV’s other heroine’s. - I do hope that she develops more of a backbone and worries less about her attraction to Dom than figuring out how to survive and uncover her truth.

It was quite reminiscent of fourth wing but had enough differences for it to not be a carbon copy. I’m intrigued to know where the story will go, so I’ll probably read the next one.

The one with the peasant.

Why isn’t this book more popular!? If you like certain dragon books by certain authors that went totally mainstream you will love this book!
I started off reading thinking “wow, nearly 600 pages…this will take a while”. I lied to myself. I couldn’t put it down. There are so many aspects to this book that just kept me interested. I don’t want to give any spoilers! I think this was a phenomenal book and I’m stoked to read the next one.

I don’t understand how you could not love this. I am so obsessed, it sure starts out as a fourth wing parody but by the end it turns into its own thing I am now on the second book and I still love it. The only complain I have is the chapters are so long but the book itself is extremely long but the end is so worth it!

Holy crap. This book was a roller coaster. It felt like it started off so super cheesy, but got better as it went along. This definitely felt like a YA book 90% of the time. But I think I enjoyed it. There were magic rules I was confused about, usurper comments I’m confused about. I’m hoping the next book helps makes things more clear

Narrator was delightful.

I can't remember where I heard of this book or why I grabbed it but I am SO glad I did. If you're looking for a similar vibe as Fourth Wing, this is a great option. Different but great all the same. Great world-building, character development and tension/spice between the main characters.

It was decent mc the ending was really good. I struggled with the miscommunication trope, I dislike it so much. So many things could have been avoided just by talking to each other. I still liked it enough to want to read the next one when it comes out.

Ugh. 2.75-3 ⭐️
Dnf @ 86% - will def come back to this but I’m too mad to continue.

Bc this book is marketed as a dragon rider romance, I was already on edge. I was thinking: ‘is this gonna be like fourth wing?’ ‘Am I about to read something that’s too similar to the original?’ So I was cautious

While I was reading & I couldn’t help but see the similarities but I was enjoying it despite the constant sentence structure issues, grammar mistakes & wtv made following the authors thoughts properly hard. In all, it read like the 2nd draft, a book in need of proper editing, & someone to correct the flow. Nonetheless I was enjoying myself. The trials, Ainsley learning & her personal development made me carry on. I didn’t not see that twist w that weird guy coming so I was properly shocked & entertained.

The characters, I felt were not consistent. I felt they often blowed hot and cold & that dulled my enjoyment, but I was willing to finish it. What ruined that HOWEVER, were the scenes where they are stranded in the snowing desert. like poop is hitting the fan & we’re having a heart to heart??? Nah wrong placement of those scenes imo & I couldn’t do again. So I’m putting this down til the series has finished bc if I’d finished this book before then I’d have been livid

So…pause? Yeah, let’s pause ✌🏾
