A burlesque performer and a professional ballerina fall in love while competing on a reality TV talent show.
Izzy Wells—aka burlesque superstar Blue Lenox—doesn’t have time for anything more than a hookup. She has a theater to renovate, and turning it into a safe space for queer performers costs money. Money she doesn’t have. With the mortgage overdue, the only way she’ll save the theater is to win the prize money from the Great American Talent show. And if that means forgetting about the beautiful Black ballerina she spent one night with in order to focus on the competition, so be it. Lillian Jackson has sacrificed everything for ballet, including a personal life. She has one goal win the ridiculous Great American Talent show or have the all-Black ballet company she heads shut down forever. It should be easy to focus, except Blue, the first woman to leave Lillian wanting more, is on the show too. The chemistry between them is hot, and they agree that after the show, they’ll enjoy one more night together. A second-night stand. But that promise only lasts three challenges. Even more distracting than sleeping together again, are the feelings they’re starting to develop. There’s no way Lillian can fit Izzy into her life, and Izzy knows better than to fall for another star. But if they can make it through the show with their hearts and dreams intact, will winning take on a whole new meaning?
Karelia Stetz-Waters remembers a time when happy endings romantic love was a holy grail she thought she would never find. Stories about lesbians all ended tragically. At seventeen, she was certain the best she could hope for was to die nobly for the woman she loved (who would never love her back, of course). Four years later, she saw her true love across a crowded room, and they have been together for twenty-plus years.
Knowing that happily-ever-after is possible for everyone, Stetz-Waters has made it her life’s mission to craft happy endings about women finding true love with other women. She is also on a quest to spread “cliteracy” across the country, using her work as a romance writer to teach readers about female sexual anatomy, desire, and pleasure.
When she’s not shopping for model clitorises or writing love stories, she’s teaching writing at a community college in rural Oregon where her students inspire her every day with their bravery, creativity, and perseverance. She also teaches for the Golden Crown Literary Society Writing Academy, a creative writing program for queer women. It’s been her honor to mentor writers who are now her peers and colleagues. Karelia also loves to garden, draw, and play with her pug-mix, Willa Cather.
Karelia has a BA in Comparative Literature from Smith College and an MA in English from the University of Oregon. She is represented by Jane Dystel of Dystel, Goderich & Bourret.
Second Night Stand by Karelia and Fay Stetz-Waters Sapphic romance. Diverse. Izzy Wells doesn’t have time for more than an occasional hookup. She has a theater to renovate though she doesn’t have the money. She enters the Great American talent show hoping the win would be able to help save the building and continue to make it a safe place for queer performers. Lillian Jackson has sacrificed everting for ballet, including a personal life. She enters the Great American Talent show hoping to use the winnings to keep her all-Black ballet company afloat. Izzy and Lillian have a history. Sure, it was only one night, but being in competition against each other now stirs buried feelings of what could have been. And what might be. Their chemistry together was sizzling and neither can forget. Would it be too much to hope to make their dreams work?
TV reality show competition vs. two dedicated professional woman that have strong goals and need for those winning points. Attraction and great sex are wonderful but when weighed against a possibility of losing everything they’ve worked for, it’s not enough. Or maybe it is? Strong, unique women. A stage and all the family of theater that’s a bit brash and real. It’s not always comfortable. But as family, they are a collective unit with a mutual goal. From the inside. Interesting, romantic and positive but too much theater for me in the whole. 3.5
I'm always here for a fun, diverse lesbian romance!
Both Izzy Wells and Lillian Jackson feel the weight of the world on their shoulders. Izzy is trying to keep her local theater afloat, providing a safe space for the LGBTQIA+ community and a place for her burlesque troupe Velveteen Crush to practice. Lillian, the ballet master and choreographer for a ballet company, is doing everything she can to keep her own company afloat. When both Velveteen Crush and the Reed-Whitmer Ballet Company win coveted spots on the Great American Talent Show, both Lillian and Izzy have a chance to win enough money to solve all their problems. Only issue? Right before the show they had a very memorable one night stand...
Karelia and Fay Stetz-Waters, a lovely queer couple who has been married over 20 years, said they wrote this book to give an interracial lesbian couple the happy ending they deserve but that is so often sorely lacking in literature. The result is such a great book: it's funny, sexy, and touching. Izzy hides under her stage persona, Blue Lenox, so she can forget about a tough childhood and all the hearts she's broken. Lillian refuses to get attached to anyone, focusing only on ballet due to maternal (and internal) pressure. (Gosh, our childhoods really mess us up, don't they?)
Izzy and Lillian are flawed, real characters, and it's easy to fall for them right away. They even fall for each other immediately, though these two can't admit it without some help from their friends! They are surrounded by a cast of lovable, diverse characters, between Lillian's all-black ballet company and Izzy's troupe. It's such a loving book with an emphasis on found friendship. The two groups compete in a series of increasingly crazy challenges in the reality talent competition while we also watch Izzy and Lillian struggling with their burgeoning attraction.
Overall, I loved this book. Diverse characters! Sexy times and wonderful chemistry! Fun reality show challenges! Definitely worth a read.
I received a copy of this book from Forever (Grand Central Publishing) in return for an unbiased review. Look for SECOND NIGHT STAND on 05/21/2024!!
Izzy has something to prove and a lot to lose: the theatre she bought as a space for her burlesque group is a money pit, and she needs the prize money from a reality TV show to keep from going under. Meanwhile, Lillian has just been told that her ballet company is at risk of being defunded...unless they bring in the exposure, and the prize money, from the same show. Neither woman is looking for romance, not with so much on the line...but things don't always go to plan.
This was a no-brainer of a book for me—lesbian romance with dancing and reality television? Yes please. Both the ballet and the burlesque performances are disappointingly vague, but the reality TV portion is a lot of fun: we don't see a ton from the other competitors, but what we do see is pretty tongue-in-cheek, with producers manufacturing drama left and right...but drama that everyone knows is for the cameras, and that doesn't spill over into real life. I enjoy reading about (fictional) reality TV far more than I enjoy watching the real thing, and books where the characters are self-aware about what they've signed up for are right in my sweet spot. Sometimes the tongue-in-cheek goes a little too far to be believed (like the friend who makes herself an "influencer" badge that lets her get away with...just about everything?), and sometimes the fast-forward moments are odd (telling me that the characters "tossed a few over-the-top taunts back and forth" (loc. 994) without sharing the taunts just makes me think that there was nothing witty enough to put in), but I can forgive a lot for characters who have honest conversations and are genuinely trying to do the right thing...and for books where the conflict is not about some evil villain or other but more complicated things.
This book is collaboration between two married writers, one of whom is an established romance writer and for one of whom this is—I think—a first book, and I'll be interested to see if they keep cowriting. I love how much more available, and how much more varied, queer romance has become in the past couple of years.
Thanks to the author and publisher for providing a review copy through NetGalley.
This is a remarkable and heartwarming story that captivated me from the very beginning. Written by a couple with over 20 years of love between them, the passion and authenticity in this novel are truly palpable.
One of the aspects I loved most about this story is its representation of the queer spectrum. Izzy Wells and Lillian Jackson, the two main characters, are both beautifully crafted individuals with depth and complexity. Their relationship blossoms in a way that feels genuine and heartfelt, and their journey to self-discovery is both empowering and relatable.
The book also shines in its portrayal of body positivity. Both Izzy and Lillian are unapologetic about their bodies, and their confidence is inspiring. It's refreshing to see characters who embrace themselves fully, flaws and all, and I found their self-assurance to be incredibly empowering.
Diversity is another strong suit of this novel. The cast of characters is wonderfully diverse, representing a variety of backgrounds, experiences, and identities. This diversity adds richness and depth to the story, making it all the more engaging and realistic.
One of the most unique aspects of "The Second Night Stand" is its exploration of how the characters see beyond each other's outward appearances to truly understand and appreciate the person beneath. This theme of looking beyond the surface is beautifully woven throughout the story, adding layers of depth and meaning to the narrative.
The found family aspect of the story is also beautifully portrayed. Izzy and Lillian find support and love in unexpected places, and their journey to healing past family wounds is both touching and uplifting.
This is a beautifully written novel that celebrates love, self-discovery, and the power of acceptance. It's a story that will stay with me for a long time, and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a heartfelt and empowering read. I cannot WAIT to read more from this power couple!
Thank you to Forever Romance, Netgalley and the authors for an ARC Galley of this book!
I was sent this book as an advanced copy by the publisher via NetGalley for reviewing purposes, but all opinions are my own.
4.5 stars!
I really liked this contemporary romance with an interracial lesbian couple participating (against each other) in a reality talent show. Throughout the book we are aware of the chemistry that Izzy and Lillian have in bed because of their one night stand that was supposed to remain just that, and I think one of the challenges in a romance is to keep the sexual tension high after that first time has happened, be it at the beginning of the book or later on. I think the authors did a good job at that!
It was also easy to see why the characters actually liked each other beyond the physical aspect, and I had fun seeing how the narrative kept putting them in situations where they got to be together and get to know each other even while being busy with their different teams. The competition element was always present in the background but never overwhelming, giving us enough time with the couple and with their teams/friends/found family. I would have loved even more time with their respective teams actually, but even from the first few times seeing them, each character was unique and it was easy to tell them apart by their quirks.
The communication in this book was great too and definitely one of the elements that made it stand out for me. It could have also been its biggest fault if it had been brought to an utopic extreme, except that Izzy and Lillian still made mistakes and fucked up and I was all here for it.
This book was beyondddd cuteeee !!!! I loved Izzy & Lilliana together. I love the characters. I love the tension. Ohh baby the drama it was everywhere 😂. The show part was good I feel it gave me the physical tension I needed cuz I was eating this up okay !!! Definitely recommend this tho adding this to my sapphic list for rereading purposes 🤭.
A burlesque performer and a professional ballerina fall in love while competing on a reality TV talent show.
Second Night Stand is here for a good time! This body-positive, opposites attract, interracial sapphic romcom is fun, flirty, and feel-good. I love that the co-authors (who are local to me) are an IRL couple; their love and exuberance shines through every page!
She did burlesque, she did ballet, what more can I say?
I love that this book was written by a couple, and I'd definitely read more from them if they write more books together. I loved the setup and the storyline where we follow a ballet group and a burlesque group competing in a reality TV show. The writing felt a little rocky to me a lot of the time, which is why this wasn't quite 4 stars for me, but I did otherwise really enjoy it.
A prima ballerina and a burlesque dancer hook up for one night before they go their separate ways.. until they run into each other again as contestants on a reality TV show. Now they're rivals competing for a prize they both desperately need, and they make a deal - a second night stand once the show's over.
One of my favourite reads of the year, it's hot, queer af, race aware, body positive, sex positive, with kindness and communication. The sex scenes are fiercely queer, with power exchange and sex toy use, but without prioritising penetration. They don't fall into gendered dichotomies of masculine and feminine, top and bottom; they subvert them every time.
Lillian's story makes it clear how hard it is to be Black in classical dance - she first shot to public attention when her mother sued the dance company because "choreography required consistent coloring" and she had to be absolutely flawless to prove she deserved a place on stage. Now she leads a dance company of Black dancers, and they always have to work twice as hard and be twice as good to make it. It is a beautifully, thoughtfully written interracial romance by an interracial lesbian couple.
Plus I love a woman so strong she could literally break her girlfriend with a strap on.
This delightful romance is one of the sweetest stories I’ve read in awhile! Izzy performs burlesque and trying to keep her inclusive, welcoming community theatre open. Lillian leads a ballad troop in need of more exposure to the public to keep it getting booked at events. They both end up as contestants who compete against each other for a reality show!
This romance includes some of my favorite tropes especially the importance of found family, how our bio family dynamics shape us into the adults we are and how it can impact our choices later in life. This romance is a love letter to found family and how we can truly be happy when we experience love and healthy, open communication with the people we love. I laughed. I cried. I hope it becomes a series with the side characters.
Thank you to the authors, the publisher, and Netgalley for letting me read this incredible ARC!! All opinions in my review are my own.
So much fun with this sapphic romance that takes place between a ballet dancer and a burlesque performer who compete on a reality talent show competition. There was a lot of depth between both character’s lives outside of the show and as they explored their own boundaries about dating. I enjoyed the complexities with their families and found their found families to be hilarious!! My frustration with the third act breakup spoke volumes to how much I adored the main characters as a couple vs apart. The ending was perfect, not rushed nor unrealistic. Thank you Forever, Fay, and Karelia for sharing the ARC and a physical finished copy with me!
This starts off really strong. Two feisty ladies having a one night stand and then having to work through the awkwardness of "working" side by side after? Yes please. Sadly, the book drags a bit after that and I slogged through the rest of the book. There are some fun bits mixed in throughout, but it was still a few hundred pages too long for me. Thanks to Forever (Grand Central Publishing) and NetGalley for my copy.
The romance is cute, but everything else about the book falls by the wayside.
Every stage of the dance competition is summarized so quickly that I stopped caring who won. Both main characters could be eliminated and it wouldn’t really change the story as far as I could tell, since they appeared to spend zero page time dancing.
It also seemed somewhat random when the tone would become realistically serious and when it would not. One character’s whole character arc revolves around experiencing racism. But 3/4 through the book, someone asks if she ever experiences homophobia and she flippantly dismisses that and says nobody cares she’s a lesbian. That seems… unlikely. Even the racism itself is bizarrely limited to certain areas. Supposedly racism in ballet is the driving force in her life but she doesn’t give a second thought to falling for this white girl or the ensuing racial dynamics?
It’s not like I wanted the book to have more racism and homophobia. But the random transitions between utopia and realism were jarring and strange.
Overall worth a read, but definitely not my favorite in genre.
There was a time where I watched almost exclusively reality tv competitions (So You Think You Can Dance and ABDC were two that I never missed). Now, the only reality show that I watch is Survivor, but this took me back/had me rooting for the Reed-Whitmer ballet company and Velveteen Crush simultaneously.
I dare you to read this and not be swept away by the romance! The communication/support (both in/outside of Lillian and Izzy's relationship) was so good to see- and the tension was off the charts!
Thank you to the publisher for sending me a copy of Second Night Stand in exchange for an honest review!
Second Night Stand is a captivating novel written by best-selling author Karelia Stetz-Waters and her spouse, Fay. Though Karelia individually has nine novels to her name, she maintains that many of the best ideas came from Fay. Since Fay has been a big part of Karelia’s brainstorming for years, co-authoring a book seemed inevitable. In fact, it was something they had been talking about for quite some time. However, it was paramount to them that their story included things that are important in strong relationships, like healthy communication, especially during sex. They believe it’s sexy to see this kind of communication in sapphic fiction. I agree; I’m glad they made sure to weave it into Second Night Stand’s narrative. It’s what makes it so much fun to read.
Though this is their first collaboration, it doesn’t feel that way at all. I’m sure much of that stems from their familiarity with one another. Together, they have a fresh and unique writing style, one that’s filled with wit and wisdom. Scenes include a charming sense of humor and keen insight. This enables readers to gain a relevant perspective on the complexities of Blue and Lillian’s relationship. In addition to that, their script flows nicely and allows for emotions to play out organically. This provides the narrative with believability, making the storytelling relatable and reliable.
What stands out most about Karelia and Fay’s style, however, is their vivid and immersive descriptions. Their word smithing makes the story world appear three dimensional. Events and places, especially those that involve the reality show competition, are not only interesting but exciting. As Blue and Lillian navigate the talent show, the Stetz-Waters duo knows just how to use imagery to increase the tension and keep readers invested. Readers can not help but cheer for these two women, making the ride to HEA a roller coaster of fun.
This is a character driven story, and Karelia and Fay do their work here, too. These are strong, independent women, but Karelia and Fay give them relatable flaws and vulnerabilities. These are likable, appealing women that readers enjoy getting to know. However, the writers are cognizant of the fundamentals of character development; they make sure to provide measurable depth and growth while constructing the arcs of these women. Blue and Lillian’s complex portrayal comes off as genuine and authentic, allowing readers to form a connection with them. It doesn’t hurt that their chemistry is off the charts either. Theirs is an unexpected love filled with possibility and passion. Quite simply, their romance resonates, making the journey wholeheartedly worthwhile.
Final remarks…
Second Night Stand gives readers much to appreciate. The storytelling is layered and nuanced, making for a reflective, yet compelling reading journey. The smooth pacing ensures balance between the slower, introspective moments and the faster, exciting scenes. The well-written dialogue is infused with humor. It facilitates a certain degree of levity, making the heavier, emotional moments lighter yet impactive. The characters are well-designed and multi-dimensional; they more than carry their weight. Readers witness their struggles, conflicts, and triumphs, creating a depth and complexity to the storytelling that sticks. This is an excellent first book for the Stetz-Waters team. I look forward to their next collaboration.
Strengths…
Strong character development Relatable, reliable storytelling Nice balance of conflict and tension Engaging storyline Diversity and representation
I really enjoyed "Second Night Stand" by Karelia and Fay Stetz-Waters! It is a one-night stand-turned-more between a ballet dancer (Lillian)/all-black ballet company leader and a computer programmer/burlesque troupe leader (Blue, aka Izzy). The chemistry between Lillian and Blue is palpable from the second they meet. It is well-established between the two of them that their hook-up is just that, not a multiple-time thing. They are both opposed to relationships, but the sizzling attraction is too much to let slip by them. They both get the shock of their lives when they run into each other and discover that their respective dance crews are set to compete in a television reality competition. Lillian and Blue both have their reasons for wanting to win the competition, so they are going to fight like heck to beat the other. What follows is a joyfully queer, celebratory, wonderful rivals-to-lovers and second-chance romance full of fun, steam, and heart! I loved Izzy and Lillian both as a couple and individually. They each other some trauma and baggage to deal with, pasts that make them wary of getting into relationships and making commitments. Because of this, the relationship s3xiness and dance shenanigans are offset with some heavy themes and much-needed nuance. My biggest complaint is that it is a little *too* slow-burning for my taste! I love how quickly everything begins, but it feels like it takes forever to get to the meat and potatoes of the second hook-up!! Still, because of this, the readers get to sit with their feelings for and between Lillian and Blue. We get to know their backstories, their friends, their coworkers, and figure out what makes them tick. We see their talents on full display as dancer/burlesque star. We get to watch them explore their connection on more than just a physical level. They help heal each other, and that's really special tor read about! I highly recommend this book!
Thank you to NetGalley, Karelia and Fay Stetz-Waters, and Forever (Grand Central Publishing) for the complimentary ARC of this book. All opinions are my own. I was not compensated for this review.
Did I procrastinate reading Second Night Stand by Karelia and Fay Stetz-Waters? Yes, yes, I did. Why? Because I was foolishly scared that my tender heart wouldn't be handled with care, although I know better! Of course, I ended up loving this sapphic love story, and I'll quickly sum it up as a slow and gentle caress of a book!
This is now the third romance I've read from Karelia, but my first from Fay (although if you read the Acknowledgments, you know that Fay has helped Karelia brainstorm book ideas in the past. And speaking of - humble brag - I am mentioned in these beautiful liner notes!!!) Anyways, I now can't wait for the next book they co-author because I can feel the extra love and warmth oozing off the pages with Fay's addition!
This love story makes you fall in love with the idea of love! It makes you grin wide and your heart happy! It's that giddy feeling of new love while having depth and soul! These two main characters (Lillian Jackson and “Blue Lenox/”Izzy Wells) are such empowering women to root for! They are emotionally mature and intelligent, have real-world baggage, and always fiercely stand up for what they believe in! Steamy scenes abound, remain incredibly sex positive, and get all the gold stars; they also feature this amazing libido booster called "communication"! All! The! Gold! Stars!
Once again, I found myself reading this book incredibly slow, and again I realized that I just want to have these scenes play out as the Stetz-Waters' intended them to; I want to imagine the characters as they are, according to the cover and descriptions! Karelia's books are the only ones I read this way as I typically ignore any kind of physical descriptions mentioned, putting in my own placeholders! I'm still not sure why it's different here, but it remains the same!
Re-reading my reviews of Karelia's other two books, it's clear to see that she writes in such a caring way, and with Fay's addition, this one is just extra lovely! Thank you both so very much!
Thank you NetGalley and Forever (Grand Central Publishing) for the complimentary copy to read and review.
Just getting a look at the cover and I knew I wanted to read this book! Then the authors posted an arc and I was thrilled! I am a part of the LGBTQIA+ community and adored this book! Izzy, a main character, is so relatable but also so uplifting in her fierceness of body positivity and being and owing yourself. Although the relationship of the story begins with a one night stand, they are thrown together (quite nicely ;)) doing a reality dance show. Lillian is the other main character, also relatable in her attraction and connection with her ‘one night stand.’ Both MCs have you rooting for them, to succeed in dance and also in life. There is beautiful growth and communication between them and also with some secondary characters. There is some nice steamy parts throughout that flow well with the storyline and add to the developing relationship. This is a wonderful story and I highly recommend!
Second Night Stand is a highly entertaining reality TV romance book with a sweet sapphic love story. Featuring an iconic black ballerina, Lillian Jackson, and a burlesque superstar, Izzy Wells, it's a romance set against the backdrop of a competition in which the two are participating along with their teams and both of them need the prize money to save their ballet company and theatre respectively. It also talks about discrimination in ballet, acceptance of all body types, the scriptedness of reality shows, complex mother daughter relationships while keeping the primary focus on their love story which i loved. If these things sound interesting to you, you should definitely pick it up.
a very cute, swoony, sexy romance about two dancers who fall in love during a reality tv dance competition. definitely about two mature women - it's not a messy romance, and it avoids a lot of the communication pitfalls that occur in a lot of romances. i wasn't a huge fan of the reality tv aspect, and i did want it to be perhaps a little messier. love that a couple wrote this book, i've been a fan of stetz-waters other writing, so i'm excited to see what she and her wife create <3
Thank you to Forever for the advanced reader copy. These opinions are my own.
I have greatly enjoyed Karelia Stetz-Waters' previous books, and I was even more excited to read this book after seeing her interact with her wife Fay and reading their introductory acknowledgements of each other.
This beautiful book is primarily set here in Portland with a fun side trip to the Oregon Coast. Izzy is a burlesque performer, and she needs money to keep her community theater as a safe space for anyone to come as they are. Lillian leads a ballet troupe, and they need more recognition to be able to continue. So both end up competing in a reality TV show.
The book contains so much about family, found family, how our childhoods shape us, and the choices we make as adults. I expect that I will keep thinking about this and reflecting for a while. I especially enjoyed how it truly demonstrates what love and healthy communication can look like.
The writing was phenomenal, and I had such fun reading about what a second night stand means. I can't wait for more from this fantastic duo, and I am especially looking forward to the Portland launch of their book.
A steamy, forbidden, opposites attract, no strings, dual POV romance between "Blue" (aka Izzy), a white, curvy burlesque dancer and Lilian, a Black, classically trained professional ballerina who meet on a reality tv dance competition and can't help falling in love even though a real relationship together makes no sense. Great on audio and perfect for fans of authors like Anita Kelly or Alison Cochrun. Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an early digital copy in exchange for my honest review. I've been a big fan of Karelia Stetz-Waters in the past and I loved that this latest was written with her partner!!
I meet these ladies at Steamy Lit Con and they were so in love and were so excited about this book. They showed me the cover back then and I have been waiting impatiently for this book.
This was such a great story about diversity and body positivity. Blue and Lilian had an amazing one night stand and months later meet up again on a reality show to win money. They try to resist each other but their connection is just too strong. I love how supportive they were with each other and their teammates. The supporting cast of characters added great depth to the story.
Thank you @readforeverpub @netgalley for a copy of this book.

Second Night Stand Karelia & Fay Stetz-Waters 4-4.5 ☆
Firstly, a huge thank you to Dana at Forever for the digital and physical ARC’s. Also to Karelia and Fay for the super sweet shoutout in the acknowledgments. You all made my heart so happy. 🥰
The moment I heard that Karelia and Fay were going to be co-writing a book I was all in. I’ve read a few of Karelia’s books, and I follow the sweet couple on Insta and I couldn’t wait to read what they came up with together.
Second Night Stand did not disappoint! It was unique, well written, perfectly paced, and once I picked it up, I didn’t want to put it down. So I didn’t. 😆 Both the MC’s and side characters were fantastic. I adored Izzy and Lillian so much. They come from completely different worlds, each with their own past traumas and flaws. They’re imperfectly perfect and highly relatable. And together… whooo so hot! 🥵 The chemistry, the open communication, the growth, and the feelings. All so good!
The talent show aspect was a fun and entertaining twist. Who doesn’t love a little forced proximity. With so many side characters I did struggle at times to keep track of the what’s and who’s but it didn’t take away from the story. That was just a me thing.
The diversity and representation Karelia and Fay poured into this story was so damn beautiful. I do hope there is more to come from this duo!
What I loved; ✨ Opposites Attract ✨ Steamy Sapphic Romance ✨ Diverse Cast of Characters ✨ Reality TV Talent Show ✨ Inclusivity & Body Positivity ✨ Axel’s Off The Wall Sayings ✨ The Title “AHA” Moment
Pub Day: 5/21/24. Izzy and Lillians love story was so much fun to read. If this one isn’t on your radar it should be, and pre-ordered because that vibrant cover is too cute not to own.
4.5 - “You can say no just because you don’t want to. Your feelings matter. You get to do whatever you need to do to protect yourself.”
Massive thanks to Forever Publishing and NetGalley for the eARC in exchange for an honest review!
I grabbed this book solely because I had enjoyed Behind the Scenes so much and I went in pretty blind. This is such a beautiful book. Lillian and Izzy are such flawed, complex characters. They’re surround by such diverse characters rounding out their ballet company and dance troupe respectively, and it just makes for such a fun, compelling read.
Lillian’s struggles with ballet and her mother’s approval. She’s given up so much of her life for ballet and you can tell that she is yearning for something else. Izzy struggles similarly with her mother, never feeling like she’s enough. Their connection is new to them both, as they’ve always had one night stands. But the chemistry they have is so palpable that when they find out they’re competing on the same tv show they can’t stay away.
Everything in this book feels so genuine. Izzy and Lillian have such beautiful conversations throughout. They’re as similar as they are different. There are so many layers to both of them, and you can feel just how caring and supportive they are as things progress. And the supporting cast is just outstanding. They add to the story rather than taking things away.
“In our imperfections we are beautiful!”
The takeaways from the book are also so inspirational, and it’s fitting that this will be out just in time for Pride Month. I can’t recommend this enough for your Pride reading.
Sometimes you read a book and it’s just not for you. This is my experience with the Second Night Stand. I had really high hopes for this book and I’ve loved the previous two books from Karelia Stetz-Waters, so I surprised when I found this one, not capturing my interest like the others.
Second Night Stand starts out with a one night stand between the two main characters, Lillian and Izzy. Both are not into relationship relationships and do not have any time in their lifestyles the addition of a partner…
So they are both shocked and surprised to find each other and the respect of dance troops as competition in the television show, Great American Talent show. Even though both of them are fighting for the prize money to save their dance troops/ livelihoods and they are set to be rivals, the attraction and spark from their first meeting can’t resisted!
I’ve had a bunch of competition show romances in this one fell flat for me. Appoint was almost too much discussion over the competition and then at others not enough, and I was left clueless as to what was happening. It just didn’t feel as real for me since we only got to see two of the competitors were. There were multiple other ones and many other people in this competition. That being said another issue I had was with the dance troops. Just so many people to get confused with.
In general, I liked both Lillian and Izzy and I think in a different set up I would’ve enjoyed their romance a lot more.
