This book left my imagination frolicking through a field of lavender, in a white flowery dress on a warm summers day. It brought together some of my favorite things all in one place - herbs, natural healing, self-care, crafts, baking, and gardening 👏🏼

This book was written by a lavender farmer/chef that welcomes over 50K visitors to the family farm each year, and even offers lavender cooking and baking classes at the farm. Safe to say that she brings much authenticity to the topics covered. As a bonus, the artwork spread throughout was so beautiful that I could almost smell it emitting from the pages.🪻

It kicks off with lots of great info about lavender. I had no idea it was an antibacterial, antiviral and antimicrobial!
It touches on the historical uses (like mummification), medicinal uses (like nausea) and which of the 450 varieties are best for culinary use.

Then it goes into recipes for things like a lavender sugar scrub, bath soak, face wash, massage oil, beard oil, tea, etc. Lot’s of great and easy-to-DIY recipes that I absolutely will be testing out myself!

Next was the craft section, which I’m smitten to have these in a book about herbs 💖 Lavender braids - something I never knew I wanted to do until now! I often dry out flowers and herbs, but never knew exactly what to do with them. I will also be trying out the sachets and eye pillow.

Then she shares some great storage and culinary spice tips and mouth-watering recipes - like warm dinners, delectable desserts and even lavender mixology. The images have me wanting to throw a lavender party! Seriously. Wanna come?

I’ve been attempting to grow lavender the past few years and end up forgetting to water it at some point. Oops 🤫 This is the year I will succeed! Because the author gives proven tips on planting, harvesting, drying and preserving.

The book wraps with a closer look at how the family farm came to be, which I think gives the book some personalized heart. I’m a sucker for those that are passionate about what they do, and sharing it with the world.

So all-in-all, I enjoyed this book, and it’s definitely going to be a great companion for me as I start to incorporate lavender as a bigger part of my life than just an essential oil I occasionally diffuse for relaxation. I will definitely be recommending this to my friends.

Thank you to NetGalley, Storey Publishing, and authors Terry Barlin Vesci and Jessica Dunham for this ARC in exchange for an honest review! I’m really loving Storey Publishing’s mission and companion guides - please keep them coming 👏🏼

The Lavender Companion is a stunning book filled with different ideas for using lavender for daily use.
Lavender is one of my favourite plant/flowers and before reading this, I never knew just how many different types of lavender there were! And I'd love to visit a lavender farm like the one in this book.
The book explains the differences between culinary lavender and non-culinary lavender, tips and information on how to grow certain types of lavender and then goes into some fantastic recipes for things to make using lavender such as Bath, body and skincare items and foods. The photography is just stunning throughout the book, and this book would make a perfect gift for any plant lover and especially fans of lavender.

It's a few basic recipes using lavender essential oils (rarely real lavender which is what I read it for) and then recipes using those basic recipes for more.

What a great, 360-degree look at lavender! It's great to see all aspects of the herb in a single, well-written volume. This inclusivity adds to the ease of use for the reader - no need to pull out multiple books to learn how to grow, harvest, and use lavender in a multitude of ways. I have other lavender cookbooks, but the ideas and tips in this book - not to mention the photographs - outshine all of them!

I love lavender. In the house I grew up in we had a lavender bush by the letterbox, and after I started balcony gardening in earnest I planted a French Lavender that is not very scented but flowers in winter, and an English Lavender that is just coming into bloom now, and smells so good. So, my interest in this book was pretty obvious. The authors run a lavender farm in Arizona, and really know their topic. The first thing that struck me about this book is how pretty it is. It's also informative and inspiring. It had chapters on how to grow lavender, how to use it in various ways including body-care, food, drinks. At the end Terry explained how she and her partner became lavender farmers, and it made me want to try something new in life. You can also go and visit their farm, and I really wanted to. What a lovely book!

This is an amazing, comprehensive guide to all things lavender! I really enjoyed the variety of uses for lavender that were highlighted in this book. Not only are there tips for growing and harvesting lavender, but this guide gives some great explanations of the various types of lavender and the best uses for some of the more popular types.

This books has instructions for crafty projects like wall hangings, bath gombs and scented sleep masks. It also has recipes for cocktails, meals, and desserts! It was mind boggling to me how much was packed into this lavender companion!

This is a great resource for people who enjoy lavender scent and taste. I know I’ll be using this book as a reference for a long time to come!

Thank you to NetGalley for providing me an ARC of this book for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

I really enjoyed portions of this book, especially the recipes section and the beginning portion that went through the many different kinds of lavender and their uses. Overall, I felt like this was a very informative book about all sorts of ways to use lavender.

I do wish it provided more details on where to get ethically sourced/pure lavender essential oil since many of the crafts and recipes require lavender oil instead of dried lavender buds.

Thank you to NetGalley for this Advanced Review Copy. I enjoy using culinary lavender to make homemade ice cream and use the scent in candle and wax tart form as I find the scent relaxing and stress-relieving. I visited a lavender farm in Canada with my best friend a few years ago and that's where I first purchased culinary lavender. I enjoyed this book, from hearing about the history of the business, to the photos and descriptions of each type of lavender, to the recipes and other ideas for uses of lavender. If I ever travel close to Pine, Arizona, I'll be sure to stop by for a visit.

It’s so cool and romantic that the author owns and runs a lavender farm and operates a cooking and baking school as well as a farm store and online retail store. I love lavender and their farms as evidenced by my visits and purchases whenever I am near one when on holiday. Halfway through this book, I quickly ran to fetch my New Zealand lavender oil and set up the diffuser. There are also a few wellness recipes that I can’t wait to try.

The cooking and baking recipes take up the bulk of the book, with smaller sections on the said wellness recipes and how to grow your own lavender. The author’s story about their farm was a nice and interesting surprise. It’s a pity I won’t be able to try the cooking recipes as I don’t have easy access to dried lavender buds, edible or not. I’m also not sure what I think about eating lavender!

Beautiful book filled with gorgeous photos. Great for people who love lavender, especially in their food.

Often a book that tries to be a cookbook and also incorporate advice and information beyond recipes only succeeds in padding out the page count, but not really delivering solid, usable information. That's NOT the case with The Lavender Companion, which succeeds beautifully on all levels, thanks to the experience and knowledge of author Terry Barlin Vesci. She and her husband run Pine Creek Lavender Farm in Arizona, as well as a farm store that sells their own homemade lavender goods, and a cooking school that teaches how to cook with lavender. Their website (pinelavenderfarm.com) is lovely and informative, and I do hope you go browse it soon.

For decades I've grown a lavender or two, just as landscaping highlights, but I never really took the time to understand it and get the most out of my plants. But I'm also an amateur herbologist, I love foraging, and cooking everything possible from scratch. I think you can see why I fell in love with The Lavender Companion just a few pages in. The book is broken into four parts: Learn About Lavender, Layering Lavender into Your Life, In the Kitchen and On the Table, and Planting, Harvesting, and Drying Lavender.

I recommend reading Learn About Lavender before jumping into any of the recipes. I had no idea there were so many types, each with their own special qualities. This section will help you choose what lavender you want to cook with.

Layering Lavender into Your Life looks like so much fun! I want to start making some of the featured products for my own use. I get such satisfaction out of making usable goods with my own hands.

And of course, there's the recipes. And they aren't just for fussy little desserts or teas. There's a Tuscan Stew full of short ribs and all sorts of delightful ingredients. With winter just around the corner, I'll enjoy making that. Sticky Lavender Honey Chicken sounds intriguing, too.

By the time you get to Planting, Harvesting, and Drying Lavender, you should have a good idea of what sort of lavender you'd like to grow. I know I'll be changing things up in my own flower gardens come spring.

Terry Barlin Vesci gives credit to her co-author Jessica Dunham, as being the true wordsmith throughout this book. While we may be tempted to give Terry full credit due to her lavender business being featured throughout, we should never forget the quiet heroes that are often the reason a book tips the balance from 'good' to 'excellent'.

I'm tempted to buy myself two copies: one for the cookbook shelf, and one for the gardening shelf. Wait... I may need a third copy for my art shelf. The photography alone is worth the price of admission. It's beautifully composed and soothing to look at.

My thanks to authors Terry Barlin Vesci and Jessica Dunham, Storey Publishing, and NetGalley for allowing me to read a digital advance review copy of this book. This review is my honest and unbiased opinion.

What I like best about The Lavender Companion is the stunning photography and the inspirational story behind Pine Creek Lavender Farm. I was under the impression that the beautiful photos were all taken at Pine Creek Lavender Farm. And that the photos were of their own lavender and farm. At the end of the book I was disappointed to read that another lavender farm provided photos. I'm not sure how many or which. Now knowing this, I would like to see small text with each photo crediting where it came from. The authors created such a wonderful vibe with the story behind their successful farm based business. Properly identifying the photos helps paint a more accurate picture of Pine Creek Lavender Farm.

The Lavender Companion starts off with some very interesting history on lavender and it's uses. It also lists several varieties of lavender with photos. The book mainly focuses on the three types of lavender grown on Pine Creek Lavender Farm. I knew there were different varieties of lavender. However, I never knew there were so many varieties or that lavender can come in other colors. This is yet another example of, no matter how much one knows, there's always more to learn.

The introduction implies that this is mainly a cookbook. Heck, they indicate that they offer a lavender cooking and baking school! While this does have recipes (I list all of them later in my review), it's not a cookbook in the way one would expect. If I'm buying a lavender cookbook, I expect a lot of recipes with lavender. While this does contain a nice little handful of various recipes, the quantity simply does not meet expectations the introduction created. If you are looking for a lavender cookbook and that's it, you may not be happy. Please take a peek at the recipes I have listed to see what you think.

My hopes in acquiring this book was to both learn more about the lavender that I grow and to find additional creative ways to put it to use. Cooking with lavender was the lowest of priorities. Considering that I haven't found lavender teas to my liking, I figure I wont like it in cooking either. For me, it seems like drinking perfume. However, I know folks who simply love lavender in their drinks and foods. Because it's been over a decade since trying lavender in anything I consume, I am going to give it another go after reading this book.

I plan to add this informative book to my shelves when it comes out.

Thank you to NetGalley and Storey Publishing for providing me with an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

If you’ve been following my blog for any period of time, you might have noticed that I have an interest in “witchy” topics. I like to read books about tarot, candle magic, tea magic, crystals, herbs, runes, and essential oils. Part of this is because I like to create custom-made self care products for my friends using essential oils, like sugar scrubs and beard oils. Everyone raves about them, and I not only like to make them, I also like to know that other people enjoy the scents and the effects. So I’m always on the lookout to learn more about the plants I’m incorporating.

To start with, I have to say that this book has so many gorgeous photographs throughout. The clarity and detail that is shown in the pictures is amazing, and I was so happy to see that the things discussed in nearly every sections had a photograph attached to demonstrate what the author was talking about. It was nice to be able to visualize what I had just read, to ensure that I understood. I also loved that the author talked about the scientific properties of the plant, and referenced peer-reviewed studies to back up medical claims, but also included information about how it was used in the past, since it has such a long documented history of use.

I never realized how many different varieties of lavender there are, and that certain types are better for certain purposes, such as baking or essential oils. The author is a lavender farmer, and their love for their farm and lavender shines through these pages, so that this book reads like a love letter to this versatile plant. In these pages, there are ideas on using lavender to create crafts, recipes, drinks, and different beauty products. Included is even a chapter on how to grow your own lavender, as well as how to harvest and dry it.

There are plenty of amazing ideas for things to do with lavender in this book, and I found myself bookmarking nearly every single one. This is a book that I’ll be returning to again and again, whether it is to double-check some information or to try out one of the ideas or recipes. Some of the recipes sounded really good, while some others sounded a bit quirky but still something I’d be willing to try. And the lavender margarita and lavender honey are on my list to try first!

The Lavender Companion by Terry Barlin Vesci and Jessica Dunham – Beautiful, Helpful, and Informative

I was excited to read The Lavender Companion by Terry Barlin Vesci and Jessica Dunham. As a gardener, I love growing herbs and lavender is one of my favorites.

This book is beautiful, informative, and helpful. The authors go into detail about the benefits of growing lavender. This herb has many uses in recipes for food and drinks, seasoning, herbal recipes for bath and skin care, decorating and making your home more enjoyable with lavender’s lovely fragrance.

I appreciated learning about the history of lavender, the different varieties, and the best growing conditions for each type. Knowing this information, will help me choose the plant that is most suitable for where I live.

The authors also share food and drink recipes as well as medicinal or botanical recipes for bath and body and so much more. I also enjoyed learning about their lavender farm and how it has grown and developed over the years. For those who enjoy visiting gardens and farms, you may want to visit Pine Lavender Farm in Arizona. They have an online shop where you can purchase and enjoy their products.

I enjoyed reading The Lavender Companion - Enjoy the Aroma, Flavor, and Health Benefits of This Classic Herb by Terry Barlin Vesci and Jessica Dunham. I recommend this book for gardeners, those who enjoy growing herbs, or enjoy trying new recipes with the herbs grown in their own garden. The photographs are beautiful.

I would like to thank Story Publishing and NetGalley for the opportunity to read a complimentary copy of The Lavender Companion by Terry Barlin Vesci and Jessica Dunham. It was a helpful and enjoyable read and a great reference book.

The Lavender Companion is a beautiful book, in the pictures, in the stories, and in the recipes. I love lavender probably more than the next person, and this book just added to that love by leaps and bounds. I would purchase this book for the pictures alone, truthfully.

But it’s so much more than a coffee table photo book! There are recipes for a chicken dish, cakes, a cookie, cocktails and even tea. Then there’s also the recipes that are for topical uses. A massage oil, a face oil, bath bombs. I can almost smell the beautiful scent just thinking about those items! And that’s STILL not the end!

The author tells about how it is she came to be on a lavender farm. She explains the different types of lavender. She describes how best to pick which type of lavender you should plant and how to transplant it. How to dry it and store it.

I’ve only given a brief description of all that this book holds, and how enlightening it can be about one amazing plant, with its many different types. If you have any interest in growing and using lavender in your life, I highly recommend this book. I did receive a digital copy for an honest review through NetGalley, but I also plan to buy a hard back copy soon! It’s that beautiful and informative. And lavender happens to be possibly my favorite plant.

I am a great lover of lavender and this book is a delight.
It is packed with interesting information about lavender. The different species, how to plant it, grow it, harvest it, dry it. The properties of this magic plant and its uses. And it offers a wealth of ideas and recipes for home products, cosmetics and bath products, culinary treats and dishes in which to enjoy the wonderful scent and taste of lavender.
The colours and pictures in the book are beautiful and it makes it a relaxing and pleasant read.
I also enjoyed the personal story behind this book. Terry and Rick have restored this farm which looks like a paradise in which they work with passion in their lavender fields. I envy the readers who will be able to visit them. My visit will limit itself to the nice video about the farm (https://youtu.be/gWLIIbmoW6k ) and I will enjoy making quite a few things from the book.
A great read and a lovely book to gift.

The Lavender Companion is such a treat for anyone who loves all things lavender. It’s packed with gorgeous photos and so many great ideas to bring that lovely scent and flavor into your everyday life.

What I really loved is that it’s written by a lavender farmer and a cooking instructor, so you get the best of both worlds — practical tips and tasty recipes. They cover everything from different types of lavender to cool stories and history behind the herb, which made it feel extra special.

There are over 40 recipes in here, and they’re not just for food — you’ll find ways to make your own lavender body care stuff and pantry goodies too. Plus, if you’re into gardening, the tips for growing lavender are super helpful.

Honestly, whether you’re already obsessed with lavender or just curious, this book is a beautiful, inspiring read and makes an awesome gift.

Thank you Storey Publishing for providing this book for review consideration via NetGalley.

The Lavender companion is a well rounded guide to all things lavender. Terri Vesci and her husband Rick began a lavender farm in Pine, Arizona back in 2015. They have since grown to include a Lavender Cooking & Baking school, a popular farm store and an online retail shop. I would say they are a pretty reputable source.

This book covers everything from how many types of Lavender there are, its uses (body care, culinary, etc), how to plant, harvest, prune and of course how to use it. There are several wonderful recipes such as Lavender: honey, face wash, sanitizing spray, bath bombs, sugar scrubs, simple syrup, chocolate cake, Vinegar and oils. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in Lavender.

I bought some lavender and planted it by my front porch a couple years ago and I love it so much, I decided to plant even more this year. I want to pick some of my lavender and use it, but I had no idea where to start. This book has been wonderful and so informative. It gives you all the ideas how to use lavender, including ideas for bath and body type uses and using it in your food and teas. It's full of so many ideas and the recipes are included and are easy to follow. The book includes tips for growing, transplanting, and storing lavender. This book starts with Terry's and Pine Creek Lavender Farm's history and finishes with an invitation to visit them.

If not for the information, you'll fall in love with the gorgeous photographs! That's because lavender is known for its beautiful colors: shades of purple, blue, pink, and white.

The author gives us so much information about lavender's many uses and benefits. There are many ways you can gain by using this beautiful and versatile plant.

Cosmetic products, culinary uses, recipes, ... - Lavender has so much to offer, so many benefits either by using its oil (topically, ingesting, smelling) or by consuming the plant.

Calming, regenerative, soothing, aromatic, oils, stems, buds, ... This plant has many uses!
We are even invited to visit Pine Creek Lavender Farm. So, if you are around Arizona, go check it out!

The book covers the history, varieties, planting, and care of lavender, along with a generous collection of recipes. These recipes range from body products and sachets to incorporating lavender into various food dishes and oils. This is an absolutely beautiful book on the cultivation and uses of lavender, which I love. Gorgeous photos and interesting recipes for teas, herbal blends, oils, and culinary uses.

I use food- safe lavender often in baking, so I was happy to see a few new recipes that I know I’ll try out! There’s lots of very interesting information on growing and harvesting lavender, as well as photos to help identify different varieties of the plant. Definitely worth looking at if you need more lavender in your life (and honestly, who doesn’t?)

The Lavender Companion provides an in-depth look at one of nature's beloved herbs. Author Terry Barlin Vesci and owner of Pine Creek Lavender Farm in Arizona gives readers an up-close-and-personal look at everything lavender -- from listing and photographing the different varieties, to growing techniques, to how to use lavender for body products and crafts.

Vesci also provides numerous recipes using lavender, which, to me, is an added bonus to this book. The Lavender Companion is THE book to read for lavender lovers.

The 'In the Kitchen' section gives more recipes for things such as Lavender salt, vinegar and oils, and cookies and cakes. I love lavender and I haven't found a book like it yet. Not only is the execution beautiful, but I also feel it is complete in terms of content. It is not only about the diverse uses of lavender, but also presents the many varieties of lavender, which one is more appropriate to use (e.g. lace, essential oil, soap, etc.), and also discusses in detail the planting, growing, harvesting, and drying of lavender. I think it's a great piece of literature and a filling volume (from my shelf anyway).
