Here's the perfect book for Shark Week from the team that brought you Everything You Know About Dinosaurs is Wrong! Tween shark aficionados will tell you that sharks are misunderstood, but they need this book to provide the ammunition needed to disabuse those who don't understand sharks of their misconceptions! In the process of addressing various wrongly held ideas, each two page rebuttal to commonly held beliefs (sharks eat people!) offers a lot of information about things that are true about sharks. Where they live, different types, what they eat, and even statistics on various deadly creatures add to the general knowledge about sharks and amuse avid readers. There's a great glossary at the back of the book, as well as a much needed index.

Not only does this book have a wealth of printed information, but the illustrations also provide a lot of helpful material. I love that there is so much blue in the backgrounds; it makes the pictures of sharks look like they are swimming. It also makes it a little harder to read the smaller fonts on the pages, but younger readers won't notice this as much as I did.

I can't say that I was all that frightened of sharks, since they are about as unlikely to show up in my yard as I am to show up on the beach, but now I am a little concerned about cows, who apparently killed 22 people in 2021!

Readers who like sharks often swim towards nonfiction books like Littleboy's How It Works: Sharks or Silen's Can't Get Enough Shark Stuff, but I love to pair nonfiction with fiction books on the same topic. This is perfect for readers who are enjoying Márquez's Swimming With Sharks, Monninger's The Great White Shark, Spradlin's Into the Killing Seas or Northrop's Surrounded by Sharks!

Do sharks kill a lot of people? Are sharks always really big? Do sharks have no predators who eat them? Do all sharks live in shallow seas? Do all sharks lay eggs? Are sharks dumb? Do sharks die if they stop swimming? This book gives you all the answers about everything you have heard about sharks.

The first chapter is about the myth that "sharks haven't changed for millions of years." It really gets on my nerves when scientific books talk about the earth being millions of years old as if it were a fact. They can't prove that. There is no empirical evidence. It's a theory. One theory among many regarding the origins of the universe. So why can't they just state clearly that it's a theory? You would think that scientists would care about presenting clear information. It makes me wonder what other theories they are presenting as fact, and they don't bother to tell the reader that it's only a theory.

I really like the colorful illustrations in this book, and the way the information is organized in sections to answer all your questions about sharks. We learn about all the different species of shark and what makes them each so unique. We learn about how sharks affect the ecosystem by keeping fish populations in check, and how they hunt and breed. It's all really interesting!

Nick Crumpton jatkaa maanmainiota Pötyä-sarjaansa teoksella "Kaikki mitä olet tiennyt haikaloista on pötyä!" (Mäkelä, 2023). Teos kertoo erilaisista hailajeista ottamalla käsittelyyn erilaisia väitteitä, jotka sitten ajetaan puppugeneraattorin lävitse. Hait tappavat joukoittain ihmisiä? Pötyä, lehmätkin ovat vaarallisempia! Megalodon elää? Pötyä, minkäänlaista elonmerkkiä ei ole löydetty! Haita elää vain trooppisissa merissä? Pötyä, holkerin tapaisia haita uiskentelee myös hyisissä arktisissa vesissä! Emme pysty auttamaan haikaloja?

Gavin Scottin ilmeikäs piirroskuvitus on sekin erinomainen.

Suomeksi ei haikirjallisuutta löydy nimeksikään, joten tämä on siinäkin mielessä kiva lisä tietokirjallisuuteen. Vinkkauksiin alakoululaisille.
