There Are No Bathroom Stops on the Way to the Moon Space travel is a pinnacle of human ambition and a marvel of engineering. But someone had to figure out how our brave astronauts would go to the bathroom. And like any scientific endeavor, it took a lot of trial and error.
Explore the little-seen history of the inventions and advancements that allowed astronauts to boldly go where they've never gone before. From pre-flight rituals to the first person to pee on the moon and zero-gravity toilets to farting etiquette, Peeing and Pooping in Space shares everything you never imagined you'd want to know humorously detailed in smart, easily digestible, and illustrated entries.
Lots of interesting information. 4 stars because there were no photos of the items discussed.
Some interesting stories. The first person to fly to space- Yuri Gargarin- made a stop to pee on the right rear bus tire that drove him to the launchpad, thus starting a tradition among Soviet cosmonauts. Astronaut Alan Shepard - first American in space- peed in his spacesuit.
Floating in space makes it harder to tell when you have to pee. You can't tell until the bladder is very full.
Methods for urine- Urine Collection Device. Later they just had the astronauts wear adult diapers. No privacy. Buzz Aldrin- 1st man to pee on the moon( using Urine Collection Device. ) Methods for poop- Fecal Collection Assembly, plastic bag taped to buttocks. Fecal Containment Garment- undershorts worn under the liquid cooling Garment. For use during moon walks. Never used!
Space toilet- waste management compartment.
Urine is recycled for drinking water.
Newest toilet- Universal waste management system.
Pee put out into space freezes into crystals. Gases from the Fecal compartment vented into space trail a odorous miasma.
Look up the toss zone on the moon. Where astronauts left behind items that weighed down the shuttle. Lunar legacy project has a list, and a map.
Never really thought about these basic needs of life...what a hilarious history (and sometimes gross). Would you want to be known as the first person to pee in space or pee on the moon or poop in space? Thankfully technology has improved some of the release methods. Definitely did not expect to enjoy this book as much as I did...
