She shows the good, the bad, and everything in between. In Raising Ducks for Beginners and Beyond , Kristine takes the same honest approach and covers it
Through tutorials, instructions, and tips, this essential guide will have you feeling confident through every step of the process of raising and keeping ducks.
My boss currently has chickens, and I was wondering what it would be like to have a henhouse in my yard. And then I saw this book and thought, what about ducks? Well, within the first few pages, I made my decision which, in this case, was that raising ducks (or chickens for that matter) is not for me.
This is an excellent book in my view for anyone who is embarking on duck ownership or who wants a quick reference as a duck keeper. I'm not sure that I would be as inclined to pick this up if I had as much experience as Ellis does, but for someone who has perhaps raised other fowl or who is interested in having some fresh eggs, I thin this is a great read to introduce them to all the nuances of raising ducks and having to care for them properly.
Given that I am no duck expert, there may be a few items in the book that folks would argue or disagree with, but overall, I found it really gave a good overview of everything from picking a breed to health problems. I particularly enjoyed the personal stories about Ellis's own ducks even when those stories were a little sad like the one about Oreo. I was also disabused of my believe that ducks pair up for life when she started talking about the need to have more females than males or breeding becomes pretty brutal. And that was also news to me as I have never done a lot of research into the mating rituals of ducks. Yikes!
If you are considering raising ducks, this is a really good book to get you started and to really use as a reference for many years to come. And I also think this is a great book for someone who, like me, may decide against raising ducks because of the work involved. Better to know before than to risk being one of those people seeking to rehome ducklings.
As someone who knew little about ducks but has read great things about owning them, I must say Raising Ducks for Beginners and Beyond offered a down-to-earth approach I needed before considering duck ownership. Unlike some educational books, the author presents information like your mom or best friend teaching you about a hobby they are excited to share. Kristine Ellis does a fantastic job introducing her readers to duck ownership and talking realistically about the pros and cons of the hobby.
The most exciting bit to me was how approachable the duck owner is, especially to someone who assumed you have to own your lake and probably have hundreds of acres, which seems unrealistic for hobbies or homesteaders. It feels like you have a friend with you every step of the way, from hatching your first duck to caring for them throughout various stages of life, including grieving. I think Raising Ducks for Beginners and Beyond is necessary for anyone considering raising ducks!
This is a great guide full of useful information for those who wish to care for ducks. The pictures are great. The layout is simple and organized. There is an index in the back. The information listed is not overwhelming and written in a way the reader can easily take in. I'd be happy to see this on a library bookshelf. Thanks to the publisher for an ARC through NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.
