I read this book in one sitting! It took me about four hours and I couldn't put it down. This is a supernatural horror thriller involving satanic rituals and a real demon that gets summoned.
This story follows former detective and private investigator Blake as he searches for answers about a string of murders linked to demonic rituals that have come back to haunt him (literally). The book is set between events that happened in 2008, 2014, and Blake's present-day which is 2015. The story opens in 2014 as Blake is in the morgue visiting the headless body of a mutated woman, who has hooves where her feet should be. The events leading up to this moment were so traumatic that Blake ends up in a catatonic state in a mental hospital for a while. When the story jumps to present day, Blake is back to trying to investigate this cold case, and figure out how it was connected to a similar case he was involved in when he was still a detective in 2008. The case in 2008 involving multiple mutilated bodies was thought to be the work of a prostitute named Lisa Watts, who died mysteriously before the case could be solved.
As the story goes on, it reveals more about Blake's troubled back story and his past connection to Lisa Watts. Lisa's part in the story comes up in part 2 and the end of part 3, and it was by far my favorite part of the book. She's a very sympathetic character and her character development gets darker with every page.
It took me a few chapters to get into the flow of the book. The 2015 scenes are written in present-tense while the 2014 and 2008 scenes are written in past tense. There were a couple of chapters that jumped from 2014 to 2015 and back and I had to stop and reread to figure out what was going on until I realized the mixing of past and present tense was intentional. By the time I made it to part 2 of the book I was hooked.
This book is dark and creepy, it has a little gore, a little spice, it's definitely for a mature audience. The ending was a doozy! Nothing about this book was predictable which I loved, I recommend this book to fans of creepy supernatural horror books.
A very entertaining read to say the least. The story takes a little while to get going but once it does you are off to the races. I read this book in a little over 3 days and Really enjoyed it. Without giving too much away this is a noir style detective mystery with added elements of the paranormal and other worldly demons. Sound like a lot to swallow? Well, if you like the idea of detectives trying to solve crimes related to a secret satanic cult residing in New York and Miami, this book will be right up your alley. Be warned however, it is quite graphic in terms of sexual content and gore/violence. Overall a very good read.
