Educating a Billion is an insider's take on how edtech companies in India are trying to solve the issues plaguing our education system and trying to deliver quality at scale. It covers the formative days of India's well-known edtech start-ups-BYJU'S, Unacademy, upGrad and Whitehat Jr, among others, and how these companies created products with a promise that made a difference. The growth of these start-ups is synonymous with the growth of venture capitalist led capital deployment in privately held Indian companies (private markets). The book covers Covid-19-induced changes in our educational system which led to the hypergrowth of the edtech ecosystem, a watershed event for digital start-ups globally.
With a unique ringside perspective, Arjun Mohan weighs in on the future of edtech and how technologies like artificial intelligence (AI) and virtual reality (VR) are going to play an important role in the next phase. Above everything else, this book is the story of India's new generation of entrepreneurs and founders-their hopes, their unwavering faith in the face of ambiguity and their rejection of fear. The book is about vision, audacity and optimism that's changing the education system after 200-plus years of slumber.
Education has gone through several transitions, albeit minor, over the years, keeping its facade more or less the same. During the COVID pandemic, millions of students had to get cooped up in their homes with almost no access to education. Enters the online version of learning, which, frankly, existed way before the pandemic hit but had average traction. Education had to transition and take a big leap this time for the need of the hour. It became a necessity first and then a big hit with not only students but also people who wanted to upskill around the world. Youtube can be cited as the forefather who set the path for such an advancement. Then came the Ed-Tech start-ups and apps, and now the education sector sees a mighty ally, AI. There’s always a story that charts the rise, and this epic transition has a story of its own. Arjun Mohan, an insider who witnessed such a transition, reveals how ed-tech companies are keeping no stone unturned to change the landscape of education, trying to assuage the problems that weaken the education system while enhancing the quality of education imparted at a very high scale. He takes you through the formative years that added to such companies' foundations. How have these ed-tech companies delivered and continue to deliver great products that produce effective results in such a short time? How did some rising and aspiring entrepreneurs, in spite of obstacles, push through to bring about changes that have changed the face of the education system, and how do these companies still continue to strive for new heights and fulfil new promises by facing upcoming challenges head-on? Being an instructional designer for an ed-tech company, reading this book felt deeply insightful and eye-opening. Reading this book did not feel like a chore; in fact, it actually felt enriching to read about the journey and be surprised at the level of grit, hard work, and passion that went into it. If you are remotely interested in understanding ed-tech companies and their journey and how some rising entrepreneurs in India are still at it, this book is for you!

🌼 "Educating A Billion" by "Arjun Mohan" is a non-fiction read that is a complete guide for those who are interested in owning their own business. A book that shares different stories of the many successful startups being it from Byju's or YouTube Education.
🌼 The book has 25 chapters constituting every aspect of owning a successful startup. Each chapter has a lesson to teach.
🌼 Though every chapter has a different part to cover my favourite part from the whole book was "Pay In Parts" since it is something that I could relate to the most because of its examples. It is never important to make all the payments in one go when you have no brownie points after doing so. Do the payments in sections/segments.
🌼 The words are easy to understand, beginners can give it a try. Also, those who want to learn about entrepreneurship skills and get some tips for successful startups.
Educating a Billion is quick paced and interesting story of edtech in India. The author being an insider is able to interestingly present complex scenarios with ease through personal anecdotes thus making the narrative interesting. I will recommend this book to people interested in education, startups, investing and marketing. The section on BYJUS casting SRK is an absolute reference section for a modern day marketer.
