I was born and brought up in the north of England, and worked for many years as the managing director of an interactive media company. I wrote every day - everything from creative proposals to user manuals - but most exciting of all was writing interactive dramas - including for the Cluedo (Clue in the US) interactive games. I was fortunate enough to sell my company in 2000 and we moved to Italy where we bought and restored an old country house.
I have published six full length novels and one novella, and my seventh Come a Little Closer is due for release in 2018. I now live on the beautiful island of Alderney in the Channel Islands, where I write full time.
Having loved and read all the books in the DCI Tom Douglas series, I wondered if I would feel the same having read other crime thrillers, it has been a while since I read a book in this series but no, from the first few pages I was back in his domain. I love the relationship between Tom and his DI Becky Robinson they have worked together for some time and they know how each other thinks and the team are loyal to him.
Six school friends who were close knit and did everything together. They had a huge falling out and went their separate ways.
15 years later Mallory is successful and is in a relationship with the then heartbreaker Nathan who she was great friends with but always turned him down. She is at her book club when a new member arrives late. This person coincidentally works in HR at the same firm as Nathan. She rather sheepishly and almost cringingly sympathises with Mallory choosing her words carefully so not to reveal the contents of the conversation about what happened to Nathan. Mallory has no idea but tries to make out she is aware but feels she cannot ask for more details fear of showing her hand.
she leaves shortly to go home early to confront Nathan but when she hears the reason it is clear she has doubts due to his past reputation. She horrified he kept pretending to go to work.
Then everything changes when one by one every member of the six ex friends are thrown together as they are all targeted in such a way that could ruin their lives. Someone is lying and what is the motive? This person has had time to craft out their plan and thinks it’s foolproof - will Tom and his team get to the truth before bodies begin to fall?.
NO LIES........ Rachel Abbott's "No More Lies" is a well-written, compelling, and tightly plotted police procedural that's also an unputdownable page-turner.
"No More Lies" is Book #11 of the author's DCI Tom Douglas series which is also a stand-alone read.
When attacks on a group of six former friends are skilfully targeted, DCI Tom Douglas must try to unravel the past and discover who is the architect of their misery.
The author's characterizations were strong, the dialogue was whip-smart and action-packed, and the twists were plentiful.
I listened to the audiobook read by Lisa Coleman, who did an outstanding job with the narration.
This was my first DCI Tom Douglas book and I will be circling back to read the earlier releases in this series.
I haven't been writing reviews recently as I'm just way too busy, but I felt that I had to take the time to write a few words about this one.
Without a doubt my favourite book in this series. Yes, the police procedural is there, but this was quite the psychological thriller too. Twists and turns aplenty, leading to a great workout for the old grey matter. While I did guess who the "bad guy" was, I was never sure until the author wanted the reader to know. I began second-guessing myself constantly and was still rocked by the big reveal. I was sure I had guessed it wrong. This was very cleverly thought out and executed. If I were Rachel Abbott's partner, I'd be seriously worried lol.
First book from Rachel Abbott and I spoiled the Detective Chief Inspector Tom Douglas storyline😩 Why I did not realize that this one was the 11th book from the series??? I just saw the title of the book which does not contain "DCI Tom Douglas#11) and went for it. All books in the series are good stand-alone ones, but the Chief Inspector Tom Douglas is a main character who oversees the relevant investigations, sharing about his private life as well.
4.5⭐ rounded up
PLOT: 5⭐ Nathan is accused of sexual harassment at his corporate law firm. Taya`s kid was kidnapped. Aka is accused of blackmailing someone.. They are all friends but lost touch after one night at the park, 15 years ago near Manchester. What happened? The strike of crimes keeps rolling and their lives are collapsing. Is there any connection between the different crimes?
The book consists of more storylines, different main characters, different PoVs, several crimes. Tom Douglas DCI is the leader of the investigation, who starts to put together the puzzle. In the meantime, he is facing some serious problems in his private life as well. Are the perpetrators the real perpetrators or only victims?
Excellent, enjoyable storyline, more complex than Freida McFadden`s books. The vibe is though very similar to "In the Dark" by Loreth Anne White.
TWIST, SUSPENSE: 4⭐ 1⭐ minus: I wished the ending major twist had been more put together. It was tenseful, however, the deep catharsis was missing. Not bad though, I kept guessing how the different crimes are coming together and what was the root-cause.
SYTLE: 5⭐ I really liked the fact that it was not a simple one storyline (beginning-end), but there were different support storyline and support characters. I was emotionally invested in the Chief Inspector`s private life as well and am curious what is going the happen with the brother.. this story was kept open, I guess for the next book with Tom Douglas 🤗
I will definitely read more from Rachel Abbott - she should be going viral!! The only reason she has not gone viral is that her books has some kind of complexity to it (more than 1 storyline), which the mainstream cannot handle.😑
Labai labai patiko.
A group of 6 friends behaving poorly towards an outsider 15 years earlier, comes back to bite each of them in the nether region.Tom Douglas and his team investigate a series of bizarre crimes commencing with a child's abduction. This started off brilliantly but then became convoluted, and I felt as though I needed an organogram to keep track of everyone. Sadly, this detracted from the characterization, and I found the perpetrator's actions and motivation for behaving thus, rather silly. I had also guessed at who had orchestrated the payback of all the characters early on. 3 stars
This is the 11th book in Rachel Abbotts DCI Tom Douglas series and for the 11th time, I was hooked right from the beginning. Tom Douglas is a character who has grown since the very first and I’ve missed him these last two years. I’m not going to spoil the plot, but it’s a phenomenal read And has more twists and turns than your average race track. Just brilliant. I’ve devoured this book in just one weekend. I highly recommend you do too :-). Welcome back Tom. You’ve been missed and once again, you haven’t disappointed
There are so many twists and turns in the storyline you won't be able to decide who the villain is until the end! DCI Douglas and his team are the best at solving unusual crimes. If you are a fan of psychological thrillers, you must read this novel and this series with DCI Douglas. Set aside some "me time" when you start reading because you can't wait to see what happens next. It's definitely a page turner to the last sentence!
Oh I have missed Tom Douglas. I've loved this series ever since I read The Back Road what feels like a lifetime ago, and every new books reminds me just why Rachel Abbot is one of my favourite writers. In this latest case, Tom, DI Becky Robinson, and the team are faced with two very perplexing cases. A missing person investigation and a child abduction, both highly emotional and both with a disturbing edge that really gets the hairs on your arms standing on edge from the very beginning. The prologue is sinister, the cases, complicated, and the investigations leading the team to some really unexpected revelations.
As always, the story is told from varying points of view. Alongside the main investigation, told in third person, we are given a first person perspective from one of the characters, and ultimately suspects in the missing person case, Mallory. Mallory was a fascinating character, and learning more about her and her partner, Nate, really added to the suspense and intrigue of the story. Not only are we privy to Mallory's present life, but also events from her past that explain the links between the various group of people who come to be caught up in the present day cases. As readers we always know that little bit more than the Detectives, but never the whole story, and I love that Rachel Abbot is able to lull us into a false sense of smugness, certain we know the truth of what is happening, before switching things up and turning everything on its head. Yes, we know the links between the cases, but the full extent of what is happening remains a closely guarded secret until just the right moment in time.
I have to be honest, I didn't find the group of friends from Mallory and Nate's teen years particularly endearing. As much of the story was in her voice, narrating her thoughts and fears, Mallory was the easiest to get to know, and I did feel some sympathy towards her. The author has made her uncertainty feel authentic, her anger and mistrust a natural response to Nate's dishonesty in the beginning, as were her stubbornness and determination to get to the bottom of what was going on. But despite allegations against him, I did feel like I trusted Nate, perhaps more than I should have.
I love that Rachel Abbott always skilfully conveys the various emotions in play, from anxiety, to fear, to the overwhelming sense of loss and hopelessness that follows the child abduction. Mixed with the mystery and chilling narrative from the real perpetrator of the crimes, it really gives and adrenalin kick and pulled me even deeper into the story. The pacing is spot on as always, and I tore through this in just a couple of evenings.
One of the real draws of this series though is the Detective team. Tom Douglas and Becky Robinson are brilliant characters, people I am always more than happy to go on a high speed, high stakes, journey with. The camaraderie between them, and the wider team, really appeals, and whilst they take their responsibilities highly seriously, the banter and understanding between them is a real draw. There is a bond between the two leads that really takes some beating, and with some emotional and highly dramatic scenes seeing them once again in jeopardy, there is a sense that anything really could happen. With some serious revelations throughout, largely concerning Tom's family, and some hold your breath moments at the end, it looks like Rachel Abbot may be setting us up for a fascinating next instalment and I cannot wait.
Tense, high stakes, fast paced action combined with brilliant storytelling make this another top read from Rachel Abbott. If you like a full on crime thriller that gets you into the head of both antagonist and victim, then this really is a series you should read. Highly recommended, I loved it.
I've always like Rachel Abbott's books, but this is one of her best - if not THE best. A group of friends appear to be being targeted, but by whom, and why? The prime targets seem to be the overly attractive Nathan and his immaculate wife, who may or may not be covering up their own guilt, but then others start having their share of issues too. Half way through I thought I'd aced it and knew what was going on, then everything changed, then I was very suspicious of another, only for that idea to fall by the wayside. I never had an inkling until Tom Douglas and his team started to point their fingers at the suspect. Brilliant!
Book club always gets the gossip. Mallory’s life is turned upside down by information she receives at her weekly book club. Her husband is in trouble & it seems people from her past are also being targeted. A juicy thriller but I think ultimately the reason behind the targeting is flimsy and unbelievable. 3-3.5*
No More Lies is number 11 in this particular series but it could be read and enjoyed without prior knowledge. You would be missing out on some team backstory but the actual plot and characters are standalones.
When Detective Tom Douglas returns to work, his perfect holiday soon becomes a distant dream when two baffling cases land on his desk, not just one disappearance but two, and no positive leads in either of them.
It was so good to be back with this team. DI Becky Robinson and DS Rob Cumba again form part of the back up to Tom with Superintendent Phillippa Stanley in overall control (the team dynamics are one aspect of this series that I enjoy so much). and whilst the investigative part is central to the story, it doesn’t overpower it at the expense of other characters. We also get an insight into their personal lives. As well as leading the investigation, Tom has his own family issues going on causing some concern.
Talking of other characters, the main ones here are a mixed bunch. Over 15 years previously they were friends, but university, work and life – not to mention a huge argument got in the way and they mainly lost touch. Time hasn’t been a great healer in their case and old wounds and resentments still run deep.
I generally find Rachel’s books utterly engrossing and this was no exception. Rachel Abbott has created the perfect mix of characters – there are so many secrets and deceptions that require unravelling and it’s really difficult to know who to trust. I could quite understand Mallory’s hesitation when it came to her partner Nate. As one of the main narrators, she’s a character that comes to life the most. All the threads come together so well to produce an exciting and intriguing read with perfect pace and a story with twists and turns that will certainly surprise.
Switching between the present time and events of 15 years ago, this is superbly plotted, with excellent characterisation across the board – it really came across to me how powerless a person could feel in a certain situation when everything seems stacked against you. I have to admit to doing a mini fist pump by guessing correctly before the reveal. Either pure luck or judgement – it doesn’t often happen.
No More Lies is another fabulous addition to this series. I enjoyed it so much and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend.
It has taken two years for Rachel to write the latest Tom Douglas book, and all I can say is it's been well worth the wait. Six friends, Mallory, Nate, Taya, Connor, Jodie and Akin all part ways in their late teens. Mallory and Nate are together but when Nate is arrested when a girl goes missing from his workplace, Mallory is not sure of his innocence. She remembers what he was like when he was younger. Slowly the friends are brought back together when it seems someone is targeting them. Tom is on the case along with sidekick Becky. There are plenty of red herrings that will keep you gripped. I honestly thought I had it all worked out, but Rachel had other ideas. The setting when the group meet up at their old haunt is very atmospheric. I think that this is Rachel's best yet and fans of Miss Abbott's books will not be disappointed. Thank you to Rachel and her publishers for the opportunity to read ahead of publication
Nawet w największym czytelniczym kryzysie ratuje i wciąga. 💛 Polecajka!
I have just finished the available books in this series. This worked really well. What I really like re the series is that the victims are given priority and their voice.
Rachell Abbott did it again! Seamlessly linked past and present storylines, different characters points of view, chilling and twisted case and truly sinister culprit, No More Lies delivers on so many levels. And that ending? I was shouting at my book. Ms Abbott please please don't do it to me ever again. Highly recommended.
Rachel doesn’t disappoint with this book. We have come to expect surprises, twists, and turns, betrayal, and suspense! She makes sure we get it all in this book! Six friends are simply trying to continue having a good time. They are doing some things they have done in the past. They grew up together, they had the typical troubles that friendships encounter. Something tore them apart. Years later, something else will bring them all back together. You definitely will have some surprises along the way! This is a book that is kind of like the play within the play. If you have read anything by Shakespeare, you will understand this. Most of all, you will be addicted, and extremely pleased when you are finished with the book!
It started with an innocuous visit to a book club .....
Any fans of Rachel Abbott will tell you they have been waiting patiently for two years for the next Tom Douglas book and I have to tell you, the wait has certainly been worth it. This is the 11th book in the series and they just keep getting better and better.
As with all the Tom Douglas books, you don't need to have read all the previous novels, they each stand on their own but it does help in understanding some of the character's backstories.
In this latest of the series, we find the the protagonist, Mallory Hansen attending her book club, a night to unwind and talk about the latest book they are all reading. Then, a newcomer to the group rocks Mallory's world!
Six friends formed a tightly knit group during their school years and then one night just before they all go their separate ways to university, an incident occurs that shatters that friendship. Now years later, they are all inexorably drawn back together by events that unfurl. Events that are totally out of their control. Who is lying? Who can be trusted? Who wants to cause them harm?
As with all of Rachel's books, it is difficult to write a review without giving too much of the plot away. However, this is a cleverly written book. A finely woven spider’s web that skilfully draws the reader in and keeps us enthralled throughout. It is cleverly crafted, and intriguing whilst keeping you guessing to the end, although the clues are there if you look for them. There is, however, a shocking twist at the end that is totally unexpected and leaves you gasping.
Rachel Abbott has been highly praised for her writing and rightly so. She is a consummate storyteller, whose characters are always believable. She draws us into her narrative and it is difficult to put the book down. An author who makes you want to race to the end but hesitant at the same time, because at the end, you feel a profound sense of loss that you have finished yet another brilliant story.
I would like to thank Black Dot Publishing for sending me an advance copy of this book.
No More Lies by Rachel Abbott is a masterclass in storytelling and another successful Tom Douglas, police saga ends in death and destruction. This was a very cleverly crafted story with a lot of imagination and thought devised by the villain of the story. Again the police team are excellent and well thought out characters who work well together. A child abduction, a murder or two, several criminal allegations all to disturb the lives of people who 15 years ago were friends. Highly recommended
No More Lies is the 11th book in the brilliant DCI Tom Douglas series. Right from the prologue this book will reel you in as it did me and you will struggle to put it down. Rachel Abbott is an amazing author and her writing makes you feel like you’re actually there so vivid are her descriptions of people:and places . I especially love the rapport between DCI Douglas and his work partner DI Robinson. This book is a fast paced read filled with tension and had me completely engrossed until the final chapter. This book can be read as a standalone but if you haven’t already read the others in this brilliant series I highly recommend to go back and read them as like this one they are all fantastic reads.

First book by this author and thoroughly enjoyed it. Good fast pace, exciting from page one to the end When a young man is accused of sexual harassment his whole life and his wife's is turned upside down. Sinister events of crime take place all centering around them and four friends from fifteen years ago. The accuser is then found murdered. Brilliant end twist. Highly recommended Kerry Kennedy Author
NOOOOOOOO!!!!! My heart misses a beat!!!! Nooooooooo!!! OMG! That can't happen!!!
This book was so good I ended up shouting out aloud - which made my hubby Jump, my poor westie bark!!! and I couldn't stop her! She thought something was wrong - she is blind now and tried to fight off the invisible intruder! lol - Bless her!
No More Lies was so good from Start to finish. Love DCI Tom Douglas series this is one of the best series out there!!!!
This is the best book of the series so far. This is the book I started before realising it was the 11th book in the Tom Douglas series. I am so glad I started at the beginning of the series though as the backstory that is threaded through the series sounds like it is going to come to a final showdown in the next and (at the moment) final book in the series. I highly recommend this series, it has kept me very entertained over the past few weeks.
Another amazing book by Rachel. Rachel's books never fail to tell a good story and one that keeps you gripped from start to finish. Highly recommended.
