The Lying Game

Rate this book
Getting trapped in a rundown motel with a grumpy stranger wasn’t how this night was supposed to end, but at least I’ll never have to see him again. Until he becomes my new roommate…

When a dating disaster leaves me heartbroken, muddy, and stranded on the side of the road in the pouring rain, the last thing I expect is for an impossibly hot (and impossibly grouchy) man to offer me a ride home.

I say yes. Because this day can’t get any worse, right?

Wrong.

One flooded highway, a surprise bed-sharing incident, and an impromptu lying game later, I’m still not home. And now, I can’t help but be intrigued by the mysterious big-city man who’s visiting my tiny town on the Washington coast.

But I know better than anyone that a guy like Lachlan Chase won’t stay in Cascade Point for long. I need to stop thinking about him—and how his arms felt around me that night—and stay far, far away.

I thought it would be easy… until I’m forced to move in with him.

As Lachlan and I spend more time together, the more he surprises me. He’s sweet. Funny. Thoughtful. Hot. And though we’re polar opposites, the sizzling chemistry between us is undeniable.

But can two strangers-turned-roommates ever really fall in love when their relationship started with a game of lies?

The Lying Game is a sweet grumpy/sunshine, roommates romcom filled with banter and tension, sizzling chemistry without any explicit content, a cast of characters to make you laugh out loud, and an HEA that will give you ALL the feels.

✨️Small town
✨️One bed
✨️Slow burn
✨️Forced Proximity

This is a perfect recommendation for those who love the grumpy X sunshine trope, where the grumpy is actually a softie on the inside.

This book gave me a Gilmore Girls vibe, and I loved it. Lanchaln and Lucy reminded me of Luke and Lorelai.

The romance between the characters was written perfectly, and the banter between them is wonderful. I had a smile on my face multiple times while reading.

I had a lot of fun reading this book and would love to read more about Beau.

I got an advanced copy in exchange for my honest review, and all opinions are my own.

Thank you so much, Wordsmith Publicity and Sarah Jane Woodley , for sending me this ARC!

This book was adorable! I love a fun grumpy + sunshine story, and this one was exceptionally well done!

Lachlan initially comes across as brusque and unapproachable, but he really is such a sweetheart underneath his gruff exterior. His growth throughout the book and becoming his best self, felt natural and authentic.

Lucy was a really fun character! I liked her optimism and sunshiny personality. She ‘s someone who has known deep hurt with a father who abandoned her and the death of her mother. Her strength and resilience, and the way the community became her found family, was super sweet.

These two were so cute together, with great chemistry, fun flirting, and a great romance with low angst. It’s a clean, fun, feel-good story.

I was sent an e-copy of The Lying Game by the author. All opinions are my own.

Very cute! Definitely loved Lachlan and Lucy, both had such great character development and banter!
There were a couple of abbreviations for cuss words that toed the line for me but I did like how the author didn’t put actual cussing or actual curse words in the book.

⚠️Would recommend for 16-17+⚠️

This book is grumpy sunshine and forced proximity at its best. And (I know, broken record) my first book of Sara Jane Woodley’s. I loved loved it.
Lachlan is so grumpy it makes him even more charming and so funny. Lucy is an angel. She’s one of the sweetest characters I’ve read. There are SO many parts I enjoyed. Here’s a few:
Their stay at the motel
Lucy’s kind ways
The lying game
The beer
Lachlan’s rental
Beau
Lachlan’s school visits
The drawer
His notes
Anna-May and Graham
The fixes he does behind the scenes
The swim
Farmers market
Nicknames
The pullout
Hospital
Firsts
Book club cookies
Firehouse
Date talk
Running with a wagon
The last scene and all the kisses in between.
Epilogue!! (One of my favs ever!)

A very sweet and adorable rom-com!

This book follows Lucy and Lachlan. Trapped in a rundown motel, they didn't expect to see each other again, but fate had other plans. As their unexpected connection deepens, they navigate floods, lies, and moving in together, leading to surprising chemistry and a budding relationship with banter, tension, and unexpected sweetness in this romantic comedy.

Lucy is the personification of cinnamon roll and Lachlan is a softie underneath all his grumpy exterior. I really liked his character development, it was wholesome to read. They both fitted perfectly together. I sometimes couldn’t fully connect with the characters and found myself getting a bit bored with the storyline but, overall, this book is a very swoony romance with hallmark vibes!

Read if you like:
🏡 small town.
🏡 one bed.
🏡 forced proximity.
🏡 closed door romance.
🏡 slow-burn.
🏡 no third-act breakup.

Thank you to the author, Eleventh Avenue Publishing, Victory Editing and NetGalley for providing me with an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review. The Lying Game by Sara Jane Woodley will be coming out on January 26th.

The Lying Game is a sweet, small town romance based in the town of Cascade Point. Lachlan's life revolves around work. When he's forced to take a vacation due to a PR scandal, he chooses to go to Cascade Point, where his half-brother lives.

After a disastrous date, Lucy gets stranded at the bus stop. Lachlan's brother happens to work with Lucy's best friend and they arrange for Lachlan to pick her up on the way to Cascade Point. After Lucy decides she's not getting kidnapped, she joins Lachlan on the road. She thought her day couldn't get much worse.... but then there is a flooded highway and a one bed hotel room. You can imagine how that goes! Lucy & Lachlan decide to play a "lying game" so that they didn't have to share personal details. After all, he was planning on leaving this small town ASAP and wasn't planning on getting to know anybody.

Lucy is the definition of sunshine. She loves her town and all the people in it. Lachlan is as grumpy as they come and is definitely not happy about having to spend time away from work. After some other circumstances, they find themselves being roommates. Slowly but surely, they find themselves throwing in more truths than lies. They get to know each other and complement each other so perfectly. Lucy is perfect for Lachlan - she helps bring his soft side out. This was definitely a cute read.

Author: Sara Jane Woodley

I requested a digital advanced readers copy from Sara Jane Woodley and providing my opinion voluntarily and unbiased.

Synopsis: Getting trapped in a rundown motel with a grumpy stranger wasn’t how this night was supposed to end, but at least I’ll never have to see him again.

My Thoughts: This is a sweet romcom that touched my heart. I was introduced to Lachlan in Woodley’s Love in Mirror Valley series, when he comes down to help Dee restructure the dating app his company just acquired. This is the first book in the Brighton Brothers. Lachlan’s life explodes when the guy who is VP of a dating app company has a terrible date. His company wants him to take a vacation and lay low. Lachlan does not know how to take a vacation, a typical workaholic. Lucy is the heart of Cascade Point. Lachlan’s brother is a firefighter in Cascade Point and Lachlan decides to rent a cottage to lay low, interact with no one is his plan. Well we know what happens when we make plans! Lachlan is asked by his brother and his best friend Jordy, to pick up Lucy on his way into town as she was stuck after a bad date biking. Well their initial introduction is nothing short of fantastic. They become roommates when a roofing leak leaves Lucy homeless. We follow their story, their sweet love story. This follows the tropes of grumpy/sunshine, forced proximity, closed door, small town, one bed, and roommates.

The “Lying Game” was my absolute favorite scene(s). This is a dual narration storyline, narrated by Lucy and Lachlan. Lucy is absolute sunshine, the heart of her community, outgoing, social, kind, and will help anyone who needs it. Lachlan is very grumpy, but a softy once you get past that exterior tough shell, and is thoughtful, kind, and absolutely charming. The supporting characters of Beau, the grandparents, and Jordy really lifted the story to another level. Especially the grandparents, just touched my heart so much. The characters were well developed with depth, witty banter, chemistry, and intriguing. The author’s writing style was complex, swoon-perfect, funny, heartwarming, and brilliant. The author does an amazing job painting a picture for the town of Cascade Point, I really felt like I was there with Lucy and Lachlan, discovering and feeling everything they were. The way Lachlan is written to go from a very grumpy, non-social character, to a character that would do anything for his love is so heartwarming. I loved witnessing the character development and growth intertwined into the plot and the amazing HEA we witness with Lucy and Lachlan.

This story really touched my heart. While there was only kissing only scenes, they were written with such passion, you do not miss any spice that may follow. I was all in with Lucy and Lachlan and hope that the second book is about Beau, I would love to learn more about this mysterious man and his relationship with Jordy. I love Woodley’s style and grateful to be on her launch team for this story. I highly recommend picking up this story and also pick up The Mirror Valley series. Woodley’s books are available in Kindle Unlimited.

It was cute but not memorable. 2.5 stars.

Romance- grumpy/sunshine where the guy truly started out as a career-focused city clicker who was all-around grumpy, a bit self absorbed, and quite fussy. Thankfully, he had a personality swap during the book and by the end he was embracing small town life, worked as the local handyman, and had developed a charming, sensitive, selfless and easy going personality. Quite the transformation, I’ll say! lol But of course it was an improvement (although I have nothing against a businessman love interest who still maintains a good work-life balance and enjoys city living).
Their chemistry was average.

Plot- Original meet-cute. Sweet interactions. Cute happy ever after.
Tbh, it wasn’t absorbing, but it was fine. I actually had ten chapters left and forgot I was even listening to the book. I could have walked away easily, so it was only mildly engaging.
Fyi, this features a small town with all the cliched and unrealistic depictions. Case in point: a very diverse group of community members (I’m talking male firefighters, the elderly, young adults, middle aged shop keepers, etc) all show up for weekly book club. Stuff like that. But it hardly made me raise an eyebrow. (Some romances depict small town living as OTT idyllic and quirky, but this seemed pretty realistic.)

Writing- good. The book was a little cheesy, but not terrible.

Characters- MMC ended up being great (after said transformation) and the FMC was adorbs. I definitely liked her a lot!
The “I can’t possibly move away from my quaint hometown so I’ll choose my location over the love of my life” attitude is nonsense, so I’m glad she opened her eyes to other possibilities and recognized the truth that anyone can bloom where they’re planted and every relationship requires sacrifices from both partners. (Whew, I needed a breath there from that massive run-on sentence.)

Content-
Language- none
Substance abuse- none
Spice- just some sweet kisses. No innuendo. Appropriate for a young teen audience.
Cover- fine
Format- audiobook via Everand
Narrator- I loved the female narrator! and she made the FMC’s BFF Jordy’s spunky voice so compelling and cute that I smiled every time I heard her talking.
The male narrator did a great job, too.

This audiobook was FANTASTIC! I loved it so much. This book has been on my TBR for a while. A long time ago, I read an ARC of The Real Fake Fiancé and thought it was so cute. We meet Lachlan in that story. I'm so happy that I made time for this one, and I highly recommend the audio format! It's done in dual narration, and both narrators were excellent.

The meet cute is funny. I loved Lucy's character and how her genuine goodness and bright personality helped Lachlan to let go of some of the tension he'd been carrying for a long time. I loved how Lachlan found himself going out of his way to help not only Lucy, but all of Cascade Point. Theirs was an adorable relationship.

Because I listened, I only jotted down one quote:
-"No way would I spoon with the likes of you, even in my deepest REM cycle."

I saw a bunch of reader friends reading this one and loving it so I jumped on the bandwagon and read it as well. Talk about peer pressure. ;-) Just kidding! But I'm not kidding when I say that I was happy I grabbed a copy and read it. Lachlan and Lucy were just such fun characters. They definitely have a very unforgettable meet-cute. Poor Lucy, drenched in mud and stuck in Seattle with no ride home, not even a bus heading that way due to the crazy weather. Cue Lachlan! He happens to be heading to Cascade Point to visit his brother while on a break from work, he's going through Seattle at the perfect timing. Lucy absolutely cracked me up while she was trying to figure out why this stranger was trying to pick her up. Hahaha!

Lucy's luck goes from bad to worse when the roads are closed and there's only one run down motel to stay at where she and Lachlan are stuck sharing a room and bed. Don't worry, this is a sweet and clean romcom. Just a forced proximity and shared bed trope for two characters who are not keen on the idea! They just keep getting thrown together throughout the whole book and it just made me so happy! Their misery (ok they weren't really misery) was a win for us readers!

Lucy is all sunshine and happiness and the jewel of the town. Lachlan has a bit of a history and shuts himself off from what he has perceived is true. I loved watching them come together and help each other, especially Lucy helping Lachlan. He's in for some big revelations that will spin his world and give him much to think about.

Even though Lachlan is a bit of a grump, he's the sweetest and kindest grump you'll ever meet. There's just soooo much I want to say about both of these two characters. But I don't want to spoil anything. They're funny and kind and giving and just absolutely a delight!

And now I need to know more about his brother Beau's story! Anybody else excited for that one? *Raises hand*

Content: Clean. The characters share a bed a couple of times but it is perfectly clean and chaste. There are only kisses throughout the book. It is sweet and clean.

I received a copy from the publisher, Eleventh Avenue Publishing Inc., via NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions in the review are my own.

Happy Reading!!!

this small-town, grumpy/sunshine romance has the perfect mix of hilarious banter, hallmark movie comedic moments, and the sweetest and funniest gang of misfits that call the town of Cascade Point their home.

Lucy is a cheery, optimistic, hopeless romantic who finds herself stranded on the side of the road after a date gone wrong. Her luck turns around when grumpy Clark Kent, aka Lachlan Chase, picks her up on his way to Cascade Point curtesy of his half-brother and her best friend asking for a favour. They get trapped in a rundown motel thanks to the weather and they play ‘the lying game’ to pass the time. Once the next day rolls around, they go their separate ways in Cascade Point and think this is probably the last they’ll see of each other… until Lachlan finds himself renting Lucy’s old childhood home and Lucy urgently needs a place to stay while her townhome gets fixed. Strangers, turned roommates, turned potential friends. These total opposites find that they actually enjoy each others company, and Lachlan is the first to admit that maybe Cascade point (and a certain cheery, ball of sunshine) is growing on him…

I LOVE a small-town romance and this does book does it so well. The townsfolk of Cascade Point are small but mighty, always having each others backs and quick to spread any and all types of gossip. Lachlan’s step-grandparents were the sweetest and showed everyone so much love. I loved Lachlan’s character development and getting to see his soft interior behind that giant wall he built. The chemistry between him and Lucy was great and their banter made it even better!

did I mention that he calls her princess and fixes up her childhood home just to make her happy?!?

This sweet and swoony rom-com is perfect for readers who enjoyed the hating game and the spanish love deception! This is a closed-door romance with a fantastic amount of slow-burn and tension. I highly recommend!

This book releases January 26th! Thank you Victory Editing, NetGalley, and Sara Jane Woodley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review!

The Lying Game⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Loved this sweet small town romcom.

Lucy Summers has that bubbly, energetic personality that everyone loves. She’s a hopeless romantic. That is until she finds herself stranded on the side of the road, hours away from home, soaking wet, after being on a horrible date. Luckily her best friend has sent someone to pick her up. Lachlan, who is on his way to Cascade Point to visit his half brother, agrees to help. He’s grumpy and closed off, the complete opposite of Lucy. The ride back to Lucy’s hometown isn’t going the greatest, especially when they find out the road is closed off due to flooding. That’s when they spend the night sharing a room at a rundown motel. To help the time pass by, they play “the lying game” to learn more about each other. After making it to Cascade Point, they split ways. However, since it is a small town, they keep running into each other. The more time they spend together, the more they realize they are a perfect match for each other. But what happens when Lachlan has to leave back for the city? Lucy loves her small town and doesn’t want to move away. Can they make it work?

I so enjoyed this book! I loved the small town and grumpy/sunshine tropes. I loved the sweetness of the story and the characters. I also liked how this was a closed door romance but with all that cute, mushy love. Think Hallmark movie!
This book launches on the 26th, so be sure to snag a copy! It’s a great read. I hope we can get a story about Jordy next!

First things first Lachlan Chase or Clarke Kent is swoony!!! I love a good grumpy MC and I haven’t read a sunshine/grumpy book in a while and so this was the perfect one to start back up with.

It all started when Lachlan with a bad date months ago with a rising country star.. but out the blue the media picked it up and caused a PR disaster for his job at sparksfly(a dating app). His boss tell him to lay low and ride it, out so he decides to go visit his brother Beau in their hometown of Cascade Point. While on the way so his brother, asked him to stop and pick up Lucy( Beaus best friends best friend/roommate) who was stranded.

Lucy Summer is all sunshine, and rainbow, except when she’s on a third date with somewhere and that person tells her he’s in love with his best friend.. so sad, wet and muddy she heads to the bus station.. and just when she thought thing couldn’t get worse.. Lachlan Chase pulls up..

from the time she thought he was trying to kidnap her and she told him she knows karate.. their chemistry was instant, and the banter was never ending.

Now I don’t wanna spoil it but two and a half really strong beers, one bed, and a roof leak, later.. if you’re like me you’ll be ready to pack your bags and head to Cascade Point!

Roses: this was a well rounded sweet romance. The characters were all likable and funny. I loved all the small town characters that were protective of their fellow towns people and it reminded me of Stars Hallow from Gilmore Girls. Lucy and Lockie were the best match a grew to like each other at a good pace that felt natural. I am excited for more stories with the other brothers and their potential relationships! It was great seeing each character have their own growth as well as growing as a partnership. Overall, this was a really cute and enjoyable romance.

Thorns: I would have loved to have more conversations with Lockie and is grandparents and maybe even their parents.

So, so cute!!

Wow! I loved this book sp much! Lachlan and Lucy were the perfect grumpy/sunshine characters and complete opposites who somehow end up being the cutest couple!

When Lachlan picks up a stranded Lucy (thanks to his brother and her bestie) he has no idea what he’s in for. Throw in a run down motel with only one bed available and they’re off to an interesting start.

But, Lachlan turns out to have the sweetest heart and is simply the best! And Lucy is the cutest, happiest, easiest girl to love! These two can’t help but fall for each other!

This book could be a definition of “comfort reading”. Grumpy and sunshine comedy small town story witch makes readers feel better. I like Lachlan and Lucy love story it like meeting the old friend. Yes, it’s predictable but nevertheless cozy and funny. Something with starting with the lying game in very uncomfortable situations grow into something very special and precious.

I was so blessed to receive an ARC of this book. The first ARC I ever read and reviewed was for Sara Jane Woodley’s book The Next Worst Thing and I’ve enjoyed all of her books ever since.

THINGS I LOVED
•Lachlan Chase: Listen if you would’ve told me when I met Lachlan Chase in The Real Fake Fiancé that I would adore this man I would’ve thought you were crazy. But I adored him! He’s my favorite grump, and I usually don’t care for the grump male characters. But there was so much more to him beneath that hard exterior. He had such a big heart and was always quick to help others. And I adored watching him fall for Lucy.
•Lucy: Lucy was such a ray of sunshine. I feel like she’s the type of person you just can’t help but adore. She was so sweet and fun.
•Cascade Point: I loved this town. Small town romances are my vibe and I adored the town of Cascade Point. Small town romances also have great side characters and so did this one. I can’t wait to visit this town again.

I’m excited to get more stories from this series. Crossing my finger Beau’s story is next?? And hopefully with a certain best friend of his??

This one releases January 26th!

This is a closed door romance with no language and minimal innuendo.

This book is really hard to rate.

If I rate the romance, lead characters and relationship development? 5 stars.

But…his work drama was so stupid and it got even worse at the end! Spoilers…his boss exiles him for weeks from work because he had a bad date that went viral (and they run a dating app). That alone is unbelievable and stupid. BUT…we find out his boss set it all up so he could then be the star of a reality tv dating show his company would produce…and his boss expected him to be happy about it. Our lead…in a grumpy/sunshine book…who doesn’t really date and has no friends…doesn’t smile…is always serious at work. This whole story line sucked and then fully went off the rails.

So yeah…maybe 5 stars, maybe 3…I can’t decide.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

This is my first book by Sara Jane Woodley. I was very impressed by the writing. I loved this story. It is a sweet/clean contemporary romcom.

I thought that the character were well developed and the bater was top notch! This had the right balance of rom and com! I laughed out loud several times.

There was also depth to the story. Lucy and Lachlan took us on a journey. The reader really saw the growth of the characters as the book progressed. I hope to get to visit with them again in future books!

I received a complimentary copy of the ebook from Netgalley. I am voluntarily leaving an honest review.

Reader’s Notes:

– this is part of a series, but can be read as a stand-alone

– this is told from Lachlan & Lucy’s points of view

– there are about 4 partial curse words (shortened versions of curse words)

– Lucy’s mother passed away 5 years ago; her father had left them when Lucy was young

Review:

I really loved getting to know Lachlan, Lucy, and the other people that made up Cascade Point’s population! It was fun to see Lachlan try and figure out what he could do while on vacation when he was told he couldn’t work on anything (work-wise) without getting bored. It was also really funny to see him trying to figure out how to appease the locals and get what he was looking for while in town for supplies! I loved seeing Lachlan reconnect with Lucy many times before they had to share the same space again. And I adored their time temporary living in the same house together and all the sweet interactions/humorous events that came from it. Lucy was an adorable ray of sunshine that was the perfect foil to Lachlan’s grumpy demeanor. And they even were great foils to each other when it came to love. Lucy is a hopeless romantic looking for love everywhere and Lachlan wasn’t interested in love before he fell for Lucy.

I am so excited to see more of them in the other Brighton Brother’s stories when they come, and I can’t wait to see the other brothers get paired up!

Summary:

When Lachlan went on an arranged date, he’d never thought that he’d end up plastered across news outlets as the worst date ever. And as someone who works for a dating app company, it is far from ideal press for both him and the company. So Lachlan has to go on a forced vacation to visit his brother in Cascade Point until everything blows over and he can get back to work. Along the way he meets Lucy Summers, someone that is complete sunshine…to everyone but him. Luckily, Lachlan believes he’ll never have to see the intriguing Lucy after he drops her off in town. But he forgot what small town life is like, and he may just need her help to get along with the locals…

Lucy thought she’d finally found the one for her, until the third date left her with a broken down bike in the rain instead of declarations of love for her. Things don’t seem to be able to get worse, until they do and Lucy somehow ends up stuck with a grumpy stranger in a not so great motel to wait out the storm. She tries making conversation with her reluctant road trip/motel buddy, Lachlan, but when he is clearly reluctant to share anything about himself, Lucy gets a bit creative and proposes they play a game. A lying game. Lucy is incredibly interested in finding out more about Lachlan and why he’d want to visit her small town of all places when it’s clear he’d stick out like a sore thumb. Not that she’s interested in him beyond that…though she does find it difficult to stop thinking of him. And things only get worse when Lucy has to unexpectedly move in with Lachlan for part of his stay. Because the man behind the grump is even more intriguing and eye-catching than Lucy ever thought…

The Lying Game: by Sara Jane Woodley ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

🏆This will be in my top 10 reads of 2024! Everything about this RomCom surprised and delighted me in the best way

📖 Lachlan Chase needs to get away from LA. His visit to Cascade Point is a comedy of errors.

Reasons I loved the Lying Game

🏔️Their first meeting spills into one comedic moment after another & reminded me of the amazing intro in The Kiss Cam by Cindy Steel

🏖️Cascade Point gave me small town Gilmore Girl vibes

💥Lucy & Lachlan had banter for days

🏖️Sunsets on the beach

🥳Every time I thought something would happen - IT DIDN'T. And I loved discovering this story

👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼No slow burn. No insta love. I can't quite articulate this but the pacing and timing was perfect. I was never aggravated by the wait. There relationship had a fabulous progression.

Little notes and knitted ducks - tiny details that were so sweet

Excellent supporting cast

This whole book left me feeling giddy

Quite cute if I'm being honest and I was expecting it to go a completely different way, but the whole "lying game" thingy they had was actually a very cute way to bond/get to know a stranger and it was sweet how they were both ready to give up life as they knew it to be with the other one and make them happy

Adorable small town grumpy/sunshine romance ❤️ The character development was absolutely off the charts! As was the chemistry between the two main characters. Sweet & innocent with a swoon worthy storyline 🥰

This was such a cute small town grumpy sunshine rom com that had me laugh, smile, and swoon. The MMC had just the right amount of grump mixed with sweet, and the nicknames the FMC came up with also made me chuckle. I'd definitely read more from this author/series!

I didn't enjoy it, but I didn't hate it. There isn't much of a Lying Game going on. It was just ok. I want a huge fan of Lachlan, though I do like that he got better. The girl was a bit too cutesy for me. Once warmed up, the townspeople were nice. I really did enjoy the epilogue though!!
