Nyx Fortuna #4
Guardian of Torment
Just once, Nyx Fortuna would like something in her life to be easy...
Nyx has finally managed to dismantle the magic keeping her from her missing memories, but things are a bit...fractured. Her mind keeps slipping into different points in her past, and she's not always aware of when the present is.
The issue couldn't have come at a worse time, because she finally has a lead on the Kumir—the race of identical assassins who have hunted the Hidden to the brink of extinction—but following that lead involves another interstellar trip. Recognizing that covert operations on a foreign planet aren't a good idea with her current problems, Nyx reluctantly agrees to let her friends go without her.
But when a malfunctioning memory combines with an unintended use of portal magic, Nyx ends up right where she shouldn't be. Complications prevent her from returning to Earth, leaving Nyx to navigate an alien metropolis while hoping her skipping memory doesn't get her killed.

Nyx is struggling with her fractured memories that cause time slips and present day memory loss as the memories collide. I cannot imagine how scary it all feels for her, but understand her quest for answers.
With her mental stability fragile, she sends her friends to hunt down a lead regarding the Kumir. While they have made precautions to protect her at the station on Earth Between, things go horribly wrong when her memory shifts. Sensing danger, she grabs on to a portal that transports her to Seth. The tale that unfolds while low in action brought me closer to the characters.
I love the world building in this series from the way station to intergalactic travel and magic. Nyx and her motley crew are ones I enjoy spending time with. Like most fantasy series, one must listen to the books in this series in the order of their release. From the overall arc involving the Harvester of Worlds to Nyx’s memories, the story builds. It is also essential for the relationships as Nyx takes in strays and harbors those in danger.
Fans of character driven urban fantasy and magic will love discovering the world and characters the author has created. I love the station and magical system for travel. For fans of the series, we see some issues resolved. The ending left me satisfied.
Desireé Ketchum narrates the series and has done a splendid job of capturing the voice and personalities of each character. She enhances the overall story, and it is why I recommend the audio format. This review was originally posted at Caffeinated Reviewer

This book is the forth entry into the Nyx Fortuna saga. If you liked the first three, you'll probably enjoy this one as well. I don't have a lot to say about it, it's a bit less action focused than the previous three, but it's dealing with some solid character and world building, so I personally enjoyed it.
So, fun book, highly recommended if you read and liked the first three.
As always: I paid retail price for the Kindle version of this book, my thoughts on it are my own. They were neither solicited by, nor compensated for, by the author or by the publisher.

Oh Nyx. What webs are weaved and broken.
This book is more personal for Nyx. We left her in the last book ready to break down the web holding her memories. And there's consequences that come with this. So many personal battles of the shattered memories, dealing with memories, and seeing so much more than she ever expected. Nyx has made some powerful contacts and friends. They are all willing to help her before she's stuck in the mess of a memory puzzle.
We do get to see Nyx and how she's always true to Seth. We also see her hearts desire for a father.
We get to see characters we are curious about...Nyx's mother, Jevryn, and of course more with Seth and Griff. The past Nyx and worries bleed into the current struggles and mission...
With the dangers and excursions Nyx has already been on, she's made some friends that seem to...find trouble too. And they come for help. Nyx, unknowingly, ends up on this dangerous mission as well. And the Kumir secret is out for them all.
Another fascinating book. This one is a different angle, and more on a personal level for Nyx so it may read a little slower for some, but I believe this series is worth the read. This book is a powerhouse in what we learn and can set up so many amazing things to happen in the future. It's a needed adventure for us and Nyx. It's true to Nyx's character to make this journey for herself.

This one starts off with a bang for certain - we finally meet some long awaited characters and many feels ensue.
When Nyx decided she would do literally anything to get her mother's contruct out of her mind, she reminded me of an animal with a leg in a trap, willing to gnaw off their leg (or in Nyx's case break her brain) to just be free and fully in control of themself. Her memories wind up fracturing, and she's catastrophically impaired.
The book blurb story continues, and then we have the resolution - they find Nyx's mother so she can repair the damage done to Nyx's brain. I actually appreciated that Michelle Manus wrote Nyx's mother the way she did - my inner mama bear was PISSED, and I appreciate the relationship complexity.
Onwards to the next book!

Blazing my way through this series, only one more and I'll be caught up and have to wait for the next release. This is the book where we finally get to confront Nyx's mother and find out more again Nyx's hidden memories.
Also, I was definitely RIGHT about the thing I suspected while reading the last book. *fistpump*

I am loving this series. It's always an unexpected journey. And this one was no difference. Only problem? It's a year until the next one comes out!!
I am really looking forward to seeing what's next for Nyx and Sean.

It was lovely to come back to Nyx and her crew. I really love how this story, her past, future and present, ebb and flow.

The was definitely entertaining and good continuation of the series. My biggest issues with the book were that all the complications and complexity the author crafted to intertwine the conflicts together were a little too clunky. I feel like it could've been more cohesive and streamlined.
The book picks up pretty quickly from the last book, with Nyx recovering from the immediate consequences of unraveling the Hiding net that her mother cast over her memories. Nyx's blunt force treatment of the net left her fragile and on the cusp of mental instability. All the memories that were once hidden, must still be re-sorted in her brain, and that process, she is told, will happen with increasing frequency, and be traumatic enough to confuse her mind that she is the girl of her past, for whichever memory re-plants itself. Her friends and family are alerted that they may encounter and younger and frightened version of herself. Things get more complicated though, when the healer warns her that the process could take years and ultimately cripple her mind. Her best hope is to find her mother and have her mother fix the mess she caused. Finding her mother is no easy feat, however, so she sets the task to Jevryn, since a councilor has so much more power and he wants her sane to help reverse the Stations and free Griff.
Morgen's uncle Beauregard also makes a surprise appearance with the most solid plan yet to defeat the Kumir problem, but it requires Seth and Morgen and Evra to go on the mission with him. Nyx can't leave in part because the ever-present dangers of leaving the Station and revealing her Guardianship status, but also because her imminent mental breakdown leaves her as a safety risk. As usual, some of their planning works out and other bits are torn to shreds. The fun is watching the adventure play out.
Some of the plot got bogged down in the complexities of Nyx's abilities and limitations. The author isn't the smoothest at providing adequate information about what Nyx can and can't do, while also making it interesting to read. The tangle of various plot arcs is also a little messy. I enjoyed the book on the whole, but it wasn't the best writing I've seen. I still fully intend to continue with this series and see what happens next for these characters.
