A book about getting better ! Why the $%#@ am I in pain? Can you tell me what’s wrong with me in a way I can understand? I feel like I’m falling apart. Why do I keep hurting myself? Why does my injury from ten years ago still hurt? Why should I stop smoking? My doctor says my knee is “bone on bone.” What is osteoarthritis? Why do people with osteoarthritis have different levels of pain? Do I really need a knee replacement? What can I do about my chronic pain? Why can’t I run 10 km anymore? Why can’t I lose weight? Why do most diets fail? What is healthy food? What is my body telling me? What is an emotion? Can I change how I feel? What is sleep for? Why is changing my habits so hard? Why is everybody telling me to get fit? Do you actually know how my body works? For thirty years, Dr. Chris Barnsdale’s patients asked him questions like these and many more. As both a general practitioner and a sports medicine doctor, he struggled to offer satisfying answers, and found that his colleagues did too. During his long commutes to the clinic where he worked, Chris thought a lot about how our bodies work. In his spare time, he gathered more information and started to create stories to help his patients understand what was wrong and how to get better. As he received increasingly positive feedback, he figured it was time to write a book. Every Body Hurts is the result. This is a book, written in everyday language, about how to make the most of your body. Whether you are fine-tuning it or trying to fix something that is broken, you will gain insights into how your incredible human machine works. Within these pages you will learn basic principles about how and why your body goes wrong, and how to work with your body, not against it, to make the most of what you’ve got. Learn why: “No pain, no gain, but don’t overtrain” is the new mantra to live by. I’m not promising that this book will change your life, but it probably will!
I would say more but I am off to see how far I can walk these arthritic joints start to hurt.
OK, I will do this first, but only to say that Dr Chris has given me new insight into what my body is saying to me. His work is eminently readable - I love his sense of humour - and the illustrations really work. And what he says makes sense. I think he has devised a good.way to recondition my body and reassured me that I can make a difference to my aches and pains... which is, after all, why I bought the book in the first place.
This book is a delightful read. Lots of information in a very succinct and easy to understand format. It’s not overdone with medical jargon and complicated diagrams. The illustrations are cute and adorable and the information is superb. As the author says… “ No pain, no gain, but don’t overtrain!” Highly recommend this book to people who have any kind of chronic pain or are experiencing more pain and they are used to as they get older.
This is a self-help book on dealing with our bodies in health and in preparation for possible sickness, and what to do when they do go wrong, in spite of what we do - or don't do - beforehand. It's written in ordinary language so that most will be able to read it, and follow what the doctor recommends.
The book is part anecdotal, part explanation. I dipped into it periodically between other reading material. As I'm a seasoned veteran of managing my own bodily trials and tribulations, I didn't learn anything new. I can recommend it for anyone just starting out on healthy living. Lots of suggestions.
