I found this book on the New and Popular Nonfiction Shelf of my local library. This book is an informational book about the different habitats where animals live. I asked the child I was reading it with if she wanted me to read to her or for her to read to me. She said both. This book was great for paired reading, because each page was a different animal, so it was easy to take turns. Our favorites were the sociable weaver bird and the common tailorbird. Not all the animals were birds; we were just super impressed by how they made their nests. The illustrations also helped us see how the different habitats looked because some were hard to visualize just from the written description. The child I was reading with just finished 4th grade, and there were some words that were hard for her to read. They were tier 3 words that were specific to the text, so we had to work through them together. Given that, I think this book is good for grades 3-5 to read aloud, but if you scaffold it right, you can probably go grades 2-3. It is a good book for an animal unit in a science lesson. The animals are varied, so a lot of regions of the world are covered.
Beautifully illustrated and packed full of information. While the overarching topic is animal homes, there are many other facts about animals provided as well as a conservation message. My only qualm is that the book is pretty text heavy. I might have preferred a short chapter book with several pages on each animal home rather than a picture book with more than half of each spread filled with words.
Any curious animal lover kids (and adult) will love this book. It has a little bit of information about different types of animal homes. The illustrations are beautiful and the facts provided are just enough to entertain, not overwhelm.
A gorgeous picture book about fascinating homes that animals build. I'm stunned at the engineering and architecture that each of these homes demonstrates. The illustrations are gorgeous and really capture the essence of the ecosystem the animal lives in and the beauty of the homes they build.
