A Mage's Apprentice #2

Storms of Allegiance

Rate this book
Even absorbed in her studies, Delphine can’t forget Nik or his mission to find Grey. When he reappears with a plan to defeat Grey, she’s desperate to convince Amara and Hayes to agree—even if it means putting herself in danger.

But there are things Delphine doesn’t know about her own ability, and once in Grey’s orbit, it might not be as easy to extricate herself as she expects. Confused, and with her allegiance wavering, Delphine clings to the one certainty in the fog surrounding her—Nik.

But when the two of them end up stranded and facing a threat that could upend the entire kingdom, Delphine isn’t sure if she can rely on the man who’s stolen her heart. If she wants them both to survive, she’ll have to discover the limits of both her power and her will.

If you enjoy strong heroines, fantasy worlds, adventure, and clean romance, then try A Mage’s Apprentice, set in the same world as the completed Mage’s Influence series.

Melanie Cellier grew up on a staple diet of books, books and more books. And although she got older, she never stopped loving children’s and young adult novels.
She always wanted to write one herself, but it took three careers and three different continents before she actually managed it.

She now feels incredibly fortunate to spend her time writing from her home in Adelaide, Australia where she keeps an eye out for koalas in her backyard. Her staple diet hasn’t changed much, although she’s added choc mint Rooibos tea and Chicken Crimpies to the list.

She writes young adult fantasy including her Spoken Mage series, and her Four Kingdoms and Beyond the Four Kingdoms series which are made up of linked stand-alone stories that retell classic fairy tales.

Melanie Cellier is one of my favorite authors!

This book packs so many twists and turns that I didn't see coming!

But WHAT was that ENDING???? I'm not sure how I feel about it, to be honest. Nik was showing so much character growth, and then...that. I'm not sure how he can redeem himself in the next book, but I trust this author will be able to pull it off!

This is a book you do not want to miss for several reasons!
First off is Delphine. I admit, her emotional reactions could be annoying at times, but can't that be said for all of us? I liked how Delphine grew each time she made a mistake, and her heart for others isn't something to be condemned. Amara was great, too. I liked how her backstory was fleshed out more. Especially hearing the drama between her, Clay, and Hayes...

And then there's Nik.

Oh, Nik! I've wanted to give that boy a hug since A Mage's Influence. No one believes in his ability to grow and change, and it's so HEARTBREAKING! I'm surprised he didn't end up worse. His father may have been a decent king (Though not that great), but you can see his failure to uphold his own morals and family in sacrifice to the kingdom in A Mage's Influence. And it ends up coming back to bite him... especially when it comes to Nik. He was raised thinking himself a disappointment and failure because of his father's lack of involvement. And a disappointment he became to everyone he met.

Except for Delphine. She was the exception to years of rejection and hurt. Their romance was heartwarming, their understanding of each other beautiful!

Until the ending. I'm not going to spoil it for anyone, but once again, poor Nik has to undergo one more rejection and his ability to change is again questioned. I wanted to hug him even more after these events!

This book had me hooked, and I highly recommend the rest of Melanie Cellier's books to you!

loved the first book, hated this one

The beginning of the book was poorly executed. The arc from the previous book stalled and it first third of the book was so boring it took me 2 weeks to slog through it. Then it got really interesting and enjoyable, just to end terribly. I really love this author but I won’t be able to trust her books in the future

Storms of Allegiance (A Mage’s Apprentice Book 2)

Storms of Allegiance (A Mage’s Apprentice Book 2) ~~ Storms of Allegiance deepens the emotional and magical journey that began in Winds of Courage. Kadence’s abilities are growing, but so are the threats to the realm—and to the fragile trust she’s building with her mentor, Athan. This installment explores loyalty, betrayal, and the consequences of choices when the line between friend and foe begins to blur.

Melanie Cellier skillfully expands the world with new magical challenges, hidden enemies, and revelations that shift Kadence’s understanding of her role as an apprentice. There’s more action in this book, but it never overshadows the character development. Kadence continues to evolve as a heroine—making tough decisions, learning to lead, and confronting emotional wounds from both her past and present.

The bond between Kadence and Athan becomes more nuanced, layered with quiet moments of connection and subtle growth that will tug at the reader’s heart. The story also introduces deeper layers of court politics and magical strategy that add intrigue and tension.

This is a well-paced, compelling continuation of the series, filled with both internal and external storms that test the strength of courage, trust, and allegiance. I definitely recommend reading this series!

Delphine grows a lot throughout the fast-paced adventures of the book and she starts to really come into her own. The story strikes a good balance of mystery, action, character growth, relationship growth, etc. The story progresses a lot in this book and gets you more attached to the characters than ever. It was especially interesting watching Nik and Delphine's journeys as they process and respond to deep emotional wounding and healing. Storms of Allegiance is the second book in a trilogy that is best ready in order and it does end on a cliff hanger, but the cliff hanger is worth it. This would be an engaging read for those who like mystery, adventure, fate-of-the kingdom level stakes, clean slow-burn romance, growing powers, non-gory violence (though blood is mentioned as Delphine is a healer), complex family dynamics, and awesome animal side kicks.

Okay, definitely glad I waited until after the entire trilogy was out to start reading, and honestly my review for this would have read a bit differently if I’d written it in the 20 minutes or so between ending this book and beginning the sequel. But I did begin the next book and it changed things a bit. I don’t think my star rating would have changed. I enjoyed this book and thought it was good and with the additional knowledge from the beginning of the next book my understanding of some things has shifted, but I still enjoyed this book and thought it was good. Overall I’m enjoying this trilogy more than I’ve enjoyed any of Melanie Cellier’s standalone (not fairytale retelling) series since The Spoken Mage. So, yay!

Delphine is continuing her studies under Amara, in conjunction with Master Hayes and his apprentice Luna. It’s great to see Delphine have the opportunity to interact with people her own age, especially since she didn’t really have that option in her own town. And they’re now hot on Grey’s tracks. (Side note: there are too many “ay” names in this book - Hayes, Clay, Grey. What’s next? May and her brother Jay?)
You get more of Amara’s story and Nick’s. Especially if you read A Mage’s Influence you’ll understand the importance of what makes Nick who he is and why he chose to become a renegger.
There are more encounters with Grey, who desperately wants to get his hands on Delphine and her strong healing abilities.
And the end!!! What the heck?!?

What a story!

Wow! This story was amazing and it just kept going. There were surprises, character growth, unique magic, and all you could want! The very end truly took me by surprise and I cannot wait for the final installation of this series to find how the characters move forward (particularly a favorite of mine but to avoid spoilers, I won’t say who!) from the decisions they made at the end. This did not feel like a middle book at all, though you definitely want to read book 1 first! Check this out if you like clean reads filled with adventure, some romance, and engaging characters.

You just can't go wrong with a Melanie Cellier book. She always writes wonderful, interesting stories with detailed character development and a hint of romance.
These are YA, so I would say no spice but a sweet romance.
These books can be read in the series as a stand-alone set, this book being #2, but for full back story, start with A Mage' Influence 'Seeds of Glory and Ruin'. You get to meet Nic in these books.
This book continues Delphine's apprenticeship, and we also see Nic in this book much more.
Delphine and Nic begin a plan to take down Grey, but their plan doesn't go as expected.

Contains: kisses and some violence. What the what??? I was enjoying this book. The characters seem less stupid than other characters. Delphine is pretty good at following adult guidance and Nik was starting to see how he’s not meant to be king. Then Nik goes all Anakin Skywalker on everyone. Does he really murder a whole family? How do they recover from that? And now Delphine is like “I’m gonna stick around and become a reneger to save these people”. I don’t see how things can turn out well for anyone.

Awesome book about mages, treachery, risk taking, and relationships

Awesome book that builds and builds. I give some books five stars, and this is one of those times I wish I could give a 5+. The apprentice healer with great strength, Delphine, and Nik, and Amara’s circle of Master mages join forces to uncover a mystery hurting the land and to find out what Grey is doing with his people he somehow recruited. Delphine and Nik are always taking risks and their relationship is changing. The ending is amazing, unexpected. Can’t wait for the next book!

nothing really happens…. not really any romance either, and I couldn’t get over this gap in the story line: if people become more resistant to healings (with the more healings they get), then wouldn’t healers themselves also become resistant to healing themselves???

i also can’t get over how this storyline/world interacts with The Spoken Mage and the Hidden Mage series….. is it at the same time but different location? Or precursor? How can it be set in the same “universe” but have such different roles for mages?

Wow... threw me for a loop.

Well... I greatly enjoyed the story and enjoyed more Nik and Delphine time, but the end... oh man. Blindsided! Why?? Just read the book because if you are here, you enjoyed Book 1, and you will definitely enjoy Book 2, but it is the middle book, so... you know how that goes already. I'm ready for the next one, and I'm looking forward to how the relationship develops and people grow into themselves.

Solid book with a disappointing conclusion

Loved the first book in this trilogy - engaging plot and terrific character development. Most of this book lived up to the promise of the first book. Then we get to the final showdown - and it got terribly violent. Really Melanie, you went there? Not ok. It wrapped up a complex situation in just a few pages but it didn't respect the characters. Yuck.

I am in shock. I can't believe that just happened. The ending! THE ENDING!!! Is there any chance of a happily ever after? Are we past the point of return for a chance at redemption?? I loved this book so much. In all my years of reading I don't remember ever feeling this shocked at a plot twist. I never saw it coming, it was amazing! I applaud Delphine's courage and strength even as I cry my eyes out right now. I have no clue what's going to happen next in the final book, I am equal parts terrified and so excited to see what happens next! The suspense, tension, deception, romance, and action were so awesome and took me through a rollercoaster of emotions.

Fabulous Fantasy

I really need to know what happens next! Delphine really wants to do what’s right while Gray is power hungry and able to mesmerize. Nik just wants Delphine. So much going on and this book stops on a crazy cliffhanger. If you’re wanting to read this book, maybe wait until the third one comes out.

Congratulations to Melanie Cellier for another amazing series. It’s extremely hard to find such an interesting and exciting author who not only writes intelligently but also provides top rated plots, characters and excitement in the stories.

Emotional rollercoaster

Delphine has matured and has much more control, Nik still struggles against the bitterness of feeling inferior and rejected by his family. Grey is still unchecked. This book must be read after book 1 and book 3 is needed to complete the story, which I am off to read right now!

Oh my stars!

Storms of Allegiance was such a great book--it had me turning pages quickly, eager to know what happened next to Delphine and Nik. But that cliffhanger?!! I'm so glad I waited until all three books were released to begin reading, so now I can delve right into the last book.

I don't know why but I just couldn't get into it. I found it to be kind of boring. Delphine isn't that interesting of a character and again there was so much of her inner dialogue that it just dragged the book down. And Nik to me isn't likeable either. I'm sad to say I didn't like it since I usually like Melanie's books 😭 I'll still read what she comes out with next though!

I loved how often Nik appeared and protected Delphine. (I didn’t fall in love with Dephines name immediately, it’s still an odd one to me). I didn’t find any glaring plot holes. I love Melanie’s clean books with no cursing or spice. I will be reading more of her books! I honestly read this book very quickly to get to the next. I barely remember what happened.

Ok the ending has me like: 😱😱😱

I’m hoping all is not as it seems because

A great second book to build on book one. I enjoyed this one more than book 1 actually. I will warn you this one ends on a bit of a cliffhanger so have book three handy!

I first gave the book 3 stars because I like happy endings. This one is violent and not happy. However, after thinking about the many times I was disappointed with the main character’s response to unhealthy professions of “love” I decided her final response was worth an extra star for being a good role model.

The ending made it so I couldn't give this a higher rating...I don't know how the author plans to explain and/or redeem what Nik did but I hope it's good or this series will be a disappointment.

Ouch

This book tore me apart and I can only see one way that it could turn around in book 3. Even if book 3 did fix the heartbreak in this book I don't know if I could accept the romance again. Such a painful read

So glad to finally read this second book!

Well developed plot lines, a mark of the author’s skills! Lost a night’s sleep getting to the “island” - but no more spoilers! Am glad the third book is within reach as I know Nik and Delphine should continue!
