This was a fun book to read. Seeing the mages in a more personal light, especially when they undertake researching things unfamiliar to them reminded me of all the research I did before deploying with the Marine Corps. As with the other prelude books, it as great to see a bit of history and artistically described character that allowed me to picture Smarlo as he walked the caverns investigating what was seen. (no spoilers here). Take the time to read this, it won't take that long but well worth with.
Oh Smarlo, what an absolute gem of a character. Even this short story is so packed with adventure and is absolutely gripping. I hope to see a lot more of him in Stone & Sky
Diamanti weaves minor details through his vignettes to empower the plot. The slim orc mage Smarlo glances at the ancient heavy dark-tonguetome that falls at his feet before his teacher Master berates him. Those forbidden words haunt him after an angry ranken monster chases miners underground.
