Crack Fantasy Adventure #2

I Went on an Adventure and All I Got was This Barbarian Orc

Rate this book
Berklak:

Starting an adventure is always an exciting time. I’ve gone on a few by myself, but nothing compares to gathering a full party and seeing how everyone will mesh. We might have a clumsy bard and a chaotic paladin, but with everyone working together, we’ll figure out what’s happening in Fasgard. We may have to break a few laws to do it, but I don’t think there’s anything an orc would change about that.

Well, I might change how quickly I’m getting attached to the necromancer, but there’s nothing to be done about that now; he’s mine.

Lawton:

I’m finally getting out of the palace, and I even manage to do it without breaking too many laws! Only, like, two, maybe three depending on your interpretation of “smuggler” and “spy.” My adventuring party is amazing. They like me, don’t flinch when I touch them, and are genuinely interested in my magic, and I don’t know if a necromancer could ask for anything more.

Well, except for maybe a few more hours of alone time with his traveling companion; I could definitely get behind (or rather in front of) that idea.

I Went on an Adventure and All I Got Was This Barbarian Orc is a five chapter serial fantasy adventure with a light-hearted, fun TTRPG vibe. Expect big magic, lots of cuddles, plenty of steam, and a team of characters that might not get a natural 20 on every roll, but they make up for it with creative solutions to both magical and mundane problems.

Jennifer Cody lives in Small Midwestern Town, USA, aka the sticks of Kansas. She has three kids and a Beardo she loves. Her sleep schedule is weird, so messages sent at midnight usually get answered relatively promptly. She reads all kinds of mm romance and urban fantasy, but her favorites are gay-for-you, small-town romances and over the top urban fantasy romances. Her own writing doesn’t always reflect her reading preferences, but mostly it does. She writes what she wants to read and reads extensively because she’s an addict. To books, obviously. And caffeine because sleep is for other people.

Initial pre-start thoughts: ooh 2nd part. Smexy orc time.
Initial after thoughts: huh. Okay. Easy sex house. Guess I’ll try #not Jason.

I liked the first one. This one…meh. Everyone in the party likes Law, and almost smooth sailing all round. After the build in the first one, this one felt lacklustre. All previous problems are non issue. I guess I expected more from an orc hyping up his sexual prowess. I liked the characters but it’s starting to feel typical adventure rpg and I already read plenty of those in webtoon format.

Nope. Nope. Nope.

I made it to page 25. Done. I loved the first 2 of the Mute Decrees. The other series wasn't a fan of. This one started out so strong in book 1. This one? Ew. Nope. A bard uses a gem to cause another person to flirt (my polite way of saying they went from angry to wanting nookie) with them and promises to visit them on their return. A magic roofie, basically. And the high wizard, who was all about freedom of choice last book, is ok with basically taking someone's will in this book? Ew. Nope. That's not dub-con. That's non-con territory. The stablehand was argumentative over the bard's bumbling, a gem releases a spell and suddenly they're propositioning them? Consent is sexy. Magically taking someone's right to say no isn't. A simple charm that would have made them seem like a friend, sure. Ok. But that? Nu-uh. I'd thought better of this author.

More of sweet Lawton’s golden retriever self and Berklak’s mead obsession. I’m enjoying the found family thing and the whole light hearted vibe juxtaposed against a save the world quest.

Spice: 2/5

Triggers: spiders, gore, death and dead bodies, violence, mentions of emotionally unavailable father, death of mother (historical), abusive family

DNF at 60%. I caught myself skimming, which means I'm bored, which means it's time to stop reading this story. That's disappointing. I hope other readers enjoy it.

The first installment was a delight. This second one is slower and heavier, not 'crack fantasy' at all. Sigh.

It was alright, won’t continue reading though. If you enjoy this type of books then I recommend reading the How I Stole the Princess’s White Knight and Turned Him to Villainy books by AJ Sherwood, and Adventures in Aguillon series by Lisa Henry and Sarah Honey.

Short and sweet, chapter 2 offers more adventure and magic as well as some steam with Lawton and Berklack getting it on.
Lawton is precious and might become one of my favourite Jennifer Cody characters

"Careful, Law," I murmur, stepping back the way he wants me to. "Orcs aren't known for easily giving up the people they get attached to."

I'm enjoying this adventuresome frolic! We are getting to know the whole party now, and despite the overall floofiness being almost I'm still enjoying the cheerful tone and fun questing!

This is exactly what we needed after a bloody battle, and later I'll show Lawton how good orcs are at celebrating survival.

So many things orcs are good at ;) I look forward to seeing where story #3 takes us!

Berklak and Lawton are now on the beginning of their quest. They have gathered several magical people around them to help and protect them.
I am liking Lawton. Hated by the palace staff, as he is a necromancer, he is coming into his own. Loving how he learns to pillage and also Berklak and his mead.
Each story is just the right length and I can't wait to see what happens next.

4.75* for some of the info dumping and other stuff mentioned below

So this chapter was much better than the first. Our MCs are together, they are adventuring and also being great companions... if you know, you know. 👀

Though at one point, there was some info dumping that just turned off my brain and I just was not paying attention though my eyes were moving across the page. That happened a couple of times the characters started thinking about some lore about creatures not even present in the scene, or some family history and such. I just do not like these bits. And I just hate going back a page because I realize I have no idea what I'm reading about. lol.

“That’s strange isn’t it? I didn’t expect I’d be a possessive companion.” Berklak pulls me in close, one hand holding his loot, the other squeezing my ass. “It’s ok to be possessive of me; I’m certainly possessive of you.”

As for the romance, I can see the development, even though Lawton seems to be just enjoying the perk of a orc companion and only slowly realizing that he may see something more in Berklak. Though I love both MCs. The way Berklak just lets Law do whatever, but does not realize it, was really cute. Also, some parts seemed randomly swoony and then it just simmers out...
But when I start thinking about it, the shallow romance may just be due to the 1st person narration and the fact that the MCs do not yet realize that they are maybe falling for each other. So I am not really taking that into consideration for the rating.

I enjoyed the hints at Law's powers and how he keeps himself at bay. That was a great touch.

I am really interested to the see the mystery to develop and our MCs to start realizing that they are really obssessed with each other!

bang up fabulous serialized storytelling! more pls

Rating: 5🌈

I Went on an Adventure and All I Got Was This Barbarian Orc is a 5-chapter serialized fantasy story by Jennifer Cody. It’s one that, if you ever wondered how an author plots a storyline, here she cheerfully notes this one’s by dice throw. Rolls one way, and oopsy, the current battle may not go in this character’s favor! Fun chaos ensues.

There’s a powerful necromancer (Lawton) that’s comes in a adorable compact size, a green half orc with a mean soul hammer and a love affair with his mead (Bertlak) , a clumsy paladin with a dark god as a dad, an assortment of fascinating fellow adventurers with mysterious pasts , all on a epic journey to save the kingdom.

We meet more of this intriguing group of characters that are accompanying Prince Lawton and Bertlak out into the country. To start there’s two more women warriors as well as a bumbling paladin with dark parentage with the face of an innocent who added just before they leave, a traveling band already assembled of mixed paranormal beings.

Cody adds in additional world building along with character growth and scenes of action and magical derring do! Here there be nasty spiders galore and necromancy battles.

It’s fun, it’s sexy, and five chapters will probably not be near enough time for me to have these characters in my life. I’m enjoying this series that much.

Bring on chapter three! Roll those dice.

I’m absolutely recommending this!

Adorable cover.

It keeps getting better!

I really didn’t think I could love Berklak and Lawton more than I already did but after this chapter I really, really do. Lawton is the sweetest, cutest guy ever. His delight and excitement over all the things that make up an adventure is adorable. Add in that he is fearsomely protective of his people and he’s perfect. Berklak is amazing. I love the way he’s so open and forthright and so protective of Lawton. Not because Lawton needs protecting, but because he cares for him and you protect people you care about whether or not they actually need it. We got to meet all the other adventurers and I am so excited to see these guys again. They’ve all got fantastic personalities which create this awesome group of people that I wish existed in real life because people like this should exist. It’s always lovely to see some BAMF women in stories too and Tavia and Frost are perfect for that. I will say though that my favourites amongst the group (other than Law and Berklak) are Darian and Armus. Armus’ chaotic/competent energy is hilarious and I think I fell in love with Darian the moment he told Inghram not to smile (he wasn’t being mean, I swear). I’m looking forward to the next chapter so much but also dreading when we get to the end because I already love these characters so much.

I give this 3.5 stars, but round down due to grammatical and editorial errors. The main one that sticks out that really bugs me is during one of Lawton's chapters. It starts off fine, it's in first person, and then...it's Lawton does something, not I did something. I frowned; did I make a mistake? Is this Berklak's chapter? Nope, it's Lawton's. So, yeah, that definitely should've been caught.

Overall, it was a fun book. You get to see how the adventure group interacts, how well they work together when their first issue comes up, and there's some sexy time between Berklak and Lawton. Again, a breeze to get through, very light, no real angst (though you do feel for Lawton--a theme I sense will be throughout, as it was also in the first part--about how just his father looking at him means so much, how horribly he's treated by everyone in the palace) and just fun.

I'll be continuing on--already started the next part, actually!

In I went on an Adventure... Chapter 2 our adventuring party gathers and leaves the city, off to investigate the darkness that has been spreading throughout the land. This section of the story has a fun feel, with many nods to various role playing games we've all enjoyed. Lawton and company have to manage their inventory, heal injuries, and loot bodies. The author has revealed that they added a little bit of chance into their writing by rolling a dice for some of their characters' actions - beware that Nat 1!

The group that makes the final cut to go on this journey are all special: quirky, young or maybe outcasts, and experienced beyond their years. Lawton and Berklak are still adorable and basking in their insta-love. I am here for it! Can't wait to follow along with their next stage of the quest.

I am already very in love with the series and our MC's as well as most of the newly introduced party members. The fact that the author genuinely rolls a dice to determine some of the plot and character actions honestly just makes the story even better. Book 2 was even better than book 1 and honestly my only woe is that I have to wait for each new chapter to come out instead of happening upon the series once it was finished. Sadly that is also my fault though because I've an avid reader of Jennifer Cody and simply don't have the self control needed to wait when I see she has published a new work and I often finish them in a single sitting. I'm thankful that each book so far has been left more on a "To be Continued" note rather than a cliffhanger as that would just be torture. Fingers crossed we get a fast release date for Chapter/Book 3.

ok, the adventure started....

We get a bit more background about the characters, I like how the party gets along. And I enjoy the relationship between the main leads.

I wasn't completely comfortable with Berklak's talk about how orcs get so good as lovers... it's a pet peeve of mine, but it doesn't matter if both parties are adults, whenever I read the inexperienced learn sexy times with the more experienced people I get the ick... it would be different if an inexperienced person has a romantic relationship with a more experienced one... it's not like I think people should match the level of experience in bed they have, but solely for the purpose of "learning the sensual arts" is off-putting to me.

POV: dual
Tropes: half-orc/necromancer, prince MC, fictional magical world setting.
Spice: low (one short detailed scene)
CW: big spiders (not highly detailed), some violence.

Berlak and Lawton continue to be a delight, as individuals and a pairing. The instalove is real, the chemistry charming as heck, and it all just works, especially when you throw in the ever growing cast of the supporting characters, who are strong, interesting, and compelling in their own rights. Things are moving along, narratively, and picking up momentum (vague, I know, but c’mon, it’s more fun to experience plot events as they happen) – and there’s definitely more ahead, as there’s still a bit of “just getting started” energy clinging to our storyline. 4.5 stars, an enjoyable installment in a fun and interesting adventure.

I don`t know what to say first, this series is great and have a lot of good features.
Here we learn how orcs get to be so good at loving, that bards are not always nimble, that mead is the best drink you can have, that the descendats of evil gods can be cute paladins, that druids are employed for their ability to cook, and looting after a battle is not as straightforward as it seems.
I need to know how Lawton and the king realtionship evolves.
My husband asked about my sanity when I was laughing myself silly reading this.
Thank goodnes the next installment is going out soon.
Ah yes, Lawton and Berklak keep growing closer, but every character here is compelling and well developed...
Its a delight to read this.

If you loved the first one then you won’t be disappointed with this one either. I love how the story is progressing and would love to see this as an animated movie (except for the things that shall not be named *shudders* my ass would be noping the hell out of that field and right back to Fasgard).

I can’t wait to see how this all plays out. (Even with the things that shall not be named. Hopefully that was the last of them, even the zombie one that can’t hurt anyone. I feel like Indy, except instead of snakes it’s the things that shall not be named. *shudders again*)

Highly recommend.

Thank you for the ARC read, I voluntarily give this book an honest review. Just right off adorableness, Inghram is a cute addition with the troops. I can see Lawton and his new friends have General Aleron on his toes, bad thing is..they haven't even left the castle grounds yet. Oh that is high praise indeed, if Berklak is wonder if a choice was to be made on his mead  or Lawton, that cuddly prince is wiggling deeper then expected.  Lawton is just to funny and sweet.  Oh-ho maybe there is more then just a tingle of traveling companions have more going underneath maybe the beginning of a found family in the making, only time will tell.

Part two in the serial continues directly from part one. It is another approximately two-hour read in which the travel party members meet and start off on their adventure. They have their first fights, get to know each other, and Lawton learns a new skill. There is another soft cliffhanger ending.

In the author's note at the end, Ms. Cody admits she rolls the dice for creating some random things that happen to some of the characters. You can tell she is having fun with this group.

The only proofreading issue I noted in the ARC was the spelling as "woah." I know it is an alternate informal spelling, but it bugs me.

Do you have friends who have to tell you about what happened in their D&D session? Me neither, I stopped being friends with all of them because their stories were boring and rhey wouldn’t stop.

This is basically just an RPG session in book form, with a little nookie on the side. I still can’t figure out how large the orcs are or how big is mead barrel is, and since that’s the most important prop, it’s a little awkward that I can’t. But the overall story is like, “here’s a set battle, and now we watch the party play it. Thank goodness they have a healer. Oh, the magic didn’t work, but fortunately, they have an alternative.” Etc.

Book 2 seems a good place to stop. Have fun, y’all.

I love everything this author writes and this is no exception! So much fun and fantasy is packed into this chapter of the serial series. The adventuring party continues their journey to save the kingdom and we learn more about the characters and their backstories. I can't wait to see where this story goes since a lot of the events occur at the roll of a dice and that is so much fun considering this type of fantasy.

I hope that the author chooses to do more stories like this in the future because they are a fantastic writer and this is so entertaining to read!

I'm not usually a fan of serial novels, because I read through them so quickly, but this author writes such awesome stuff I HAD to read!
The adventure feels like it's kicking off, as the first book felt more like the set up for the story (which was great!) so I'm excited to get into the action.

This is the epitome of crackfic, and so so well done. Believe it or not, that's hard to do well!

If you're a fan of D&D and other RPG and also love hysterical, tongue in cheek humor, this series is for you!

So first off, I found the glossary in this chapter which I missed on chapter one, so I have at least some idea now of the world these guys are inhabiting. In this instalment, they've started their quest and are off to a good start. We have re-animated bodies, battles with arachnids and other ridiculousness. The world building is still a little flimsy and the plot apparently (read the Author Note at the end) is down to a roll of a dice. Hey ho, these stories aren't long and they are silly, so I shall keep going. 3.75*
