Canadian Played #2

Called for Icing

Rate this book
Brett needs a physical therapist. Penny needs a place to crash.

When Brett's hockey dreams slide onto thin ice after a nasty ACL tear last season, he's left clutching the boards. Used to relying on physical hustle to keep his past addiction demons at bay, he's desperate to get back in the game. But with physical therapy slots filling up faster than a slapshot, he's on the verge of being shut out.

Penny, a top-shelf physical therapist, is fresh off a break-up with her chiropractor boyfriend and is now left without a job or a home base. Then Brett, a random hockey player who plays on the same team as her friend’s boyfriend, texts about potential PT openings. She wants to help but can’t see past her own dumpster fire of a life.

Until Brett mentions his roommate Tyler just moved out and he has an extra room.

The game plan?

Penny moves in, trading her top-tier PT skills for rent. The perfect breakaway deal.

But living together without crossing the goal line is more difficult than either of them planned. Penny can’t afford a rebound with a hockey player, and Brett can’t screw things up with the only physical therapist available over the summer. But with chemistry hotter than a Zamboni's exhaust, will they be able to keep their relationship in the neutral zone?

If you love twists and turns and last-minute power plays, "Called for Icing" will have you laughing, swooning, and cheering for love's ultimate hat trick.

In a word: nice. Dragged a lil at the end for me tho. My new no-spice romance rec tho bc The Bodyguard is kinda overhyped

This is the second book in the series I've read (or listened to the audiobook I should say) by Cindy Gunderson. Once again I really enjoyed the story, a lovely, feel good, house mates to lovers rom-com, with a little bit of a 'will they or won't they' vibe in the middle when neither is ready to confess how they really feel. The camping trip had me squealing on the edge of my seat when the missing tent pole led to the room mates needing to share a tent for the night. Trying to keep this review spoiler free but that scene didn't go where I thought it would (IYKYK 🤫). Thoroughly enjoyed it and will be listening to the next book in the series. Although this is a series, I should say for anyone wondering, they can be read as stand-alones, each book focuses on a different pair of characters that appear in each book, but they are written in a way that means you can read in any order they aren't particularly interconnected.

Likeable characters and a decent story. A little confused about what level of hockey is being played here, because these guys have day jobs so it can’t be professional level, but they have fans, so that feels like more than amateur?

in my humble opinion, i liked this book a lot more than the first one. it felt a lot more real and i loved how it focused on some deeper and more serious topics.

also these quotes 🥰
“she wanted this life. she wanted steady love and kids and fortieth anniversaries, and she wanted to wake up every morning next to the same person until they were grey-haired and changing each other’s diapers.”

“i can. i built a new life from scratch once, and i can do it again. i know how to battle, penny, and i will crawl through that sh*t a thousand times over if it means i get to have you through it. all of you. not just the part that’s there when i need it/“

Definitely quite a few continuity errors and mistakes and the namedropping of so many Canadian places and things was starting to feel a bit product placement like by the end. Overall though it was enjoyable enough at the end even if it was a bit of a slow start.

Listened to audiobook. Good narrators. I'm not typically a fan of a weak FMC but she was pretty aware of her faults so it wasn't as bad as it could've been.

Cute couple that gre together, it was sweet! A nice fluffy read for sure, and I love the Canadian setting. I hated that ex, what kind of person tries to ruin your career with bad references, it just makes me mad! Lol!

Probably more like a 4.25-4.5 but I haven't found a way to do partial stars here. Anyways, I laughed so many times because of these characters. I went in with zero expectations and had a fantastic time. I did listen to the audiobook though, so I can't speak for a physical read through, but the narrating was fun. Definitely recommend. Especially when driving.

However, now that I've listened to the 1st installment, I definitely recommend listening in order because the couple from the first book makes several appearances, and I think it would hit differently to have that initial experience. I wish I did.

Simple listen, interesting storyline with a healthy communication pattern among the characters. It was really funny in various places and kept me truly engaged throughout.
I could only hear the Canadian accent when the narrator said 'Sorry' and when they talked about Tim Hortons.

This series is so freakin cuteeeee!!! I love it

I have to say this author has a spot for a sob story tho, I honstly got really sad.

I LOVE THAT HER CHARACTERS ARE MATURE!!!!! there is nothing more that annoys me than a miscommunication trope or along those lines. It rages me so much. Anyway super cute.

PS the only reason it took me a long time to read was because, I was so behind on Uni lol
