It's a windy day in Toy Town, causing Big-Ears no end of problems. To cheer him up, Noddy organises a party. But on the way to the fun, Noddy runs out of petrol! How can he get his little car to the party on time?
Enid Mary Blyton (1897–1968) was an English author of children's books.
Born in South London, Blyton was the eldest of three children, and showed an early interest in music and reading. She was educated at St. Christopher's School, Beckenham, and - having decided not to pursue her music - at Ipswich High School, where she trained as a kindergarten teacher. She taught for five years before her 1924 marriage to editor Hugh Pollock, with whom she had two daughters. This marriage ended in divorce, and Blyton remarried in 1943, to surgeon Kenneth Fraser Darrell Waters. She died in 1968, one year after her second husband.
Blyton was a prolific author of children's books, who penned an estimated 800 books over about 40 years. Her stories were often either children's adventure and mystery stories, or fantasies involving magic. Notable series include: The Famous Five, The Secret Seven, The Five Find-Outers, Noddy, The Wishing Chair, Mallory Towers, and St. Clare's.
According to the Index Translationum, Blyton was the fifth most popular author in the world in 2007, coming after Lenin but ahead of Shakespeare.
It was a wild and windy day in Toy Town but even so Noddy set off in his little car to pick his friend Big-Ears up so that they could go fishing. But when Noddy arrived at Big-Ears' house there was a change of plan for the wind was too strong to go out on the lake and in addition a bird's nest had got lodged in Big-Ears' chimney.
Noddy said they could play indoors but Big-Ears said that it was too cold because he couldn't light the fire because of the bird's nest. Noddy said, 'No problem. I'll climb up on to the roof and clear it out for you.' Big-Ears declared that as too dangerous in the high wind and the pair were downcast because the weather just would not let them enjoy themselves.
Noddy dashed out deciding that he would do something to cheer Big-Ears up, just as a gust of wind blew soot down the chimney. Noddy met Tessie Bear in the street as she was struggling to keep hold of her knitting bag because the wind had blown it up like a balloon and it was pulling her along.
Noddy decided to take Tessie home in his car and as they drove home Tessie suggested a surprise party to cheer Big-Ears up. They then went round Toy Town inviting their friends and Mrs Skittle made a cake, Mr Plod produced a party game and Mr Sparks supplied a heater; Noddy and Tessie decided to take balloons, which they purchased from Dinah Doll's stall.
They then set off for Big-Ears' house and the party ... but the car suddenly spluttered and stopped, it was out of petrol. They decided that blowing up the balloons and attaching them to the car would get them going again so this they did and the car rushed along, its wheels hardly touching the floor! Then a huge gust of wind took it into the sky and Noddy and Tessie were frightened as they looked down on a Toy Town that began to look smaller and smaller.
Meanwhile the party was in full swing but when Dinah Doll arrived, everyone realised that Noddy was not there. 'Where is he?', asked Big-Ears. Well, he, Tessie and the little car were high in the air when Noddy suddenly had an idea as he used one of Tessie's knitting needles to pop the balloons. 'POP! POP! POP! went three balloons and the car began to descend.
And the wind was taking them straight to Big-Ears' house, where inside they were considering lighting a fire but could not do so because of the bird's nest. Then there was a sudden THUMP! It was Noddy's car landing on the roof. So while stuck there Noddy pulled out the bird's nest from the chimney and shouted down that they could safely light a fire.
Before too long Noddy and Tessie were down and joining the party but with Noddy exclaiming, 'What a gloomy day.' Big-Ears had to disagree for he replied, 'No, Noddy, with friends like you, every day is a good day!' And so it was!
