Prince: When The World Turned Purple tells the story of one of the most influential and enigmatic musicians of our time. The book begins with the author's personal account of first discovering Prince's music, and how it sparked a lifelong love and appreciation for his artistry.
My thanks to Goodreads and to the author for an advanced copy of this book about the history and impact of the Music Maestro, his Purple one, the incomparable Prince on not only the writer, but history, art, style and much more.
His Name was Prince, oh boy was he funky And Prince, was one and only. A singer, songwriter, actor, director, screenwriter, soundtrack creator, mood maker, heartbreaker, musician, dancer, lover, lover of sound, basketballer, maker of pancakes and I know I am missing somethings, but unlike Prince I am not perfect. Prince, either by his name, or his symbol is the only one of his kind, with nothing on the future even coming close. A prophet who could see where the industry was headed, one who could see the economy of music changing, a man who could see the rise of technology and not for the good, but still leaving his musical rights in disarray upon his death. An artist who could keep millions o football fans from flipping away in a halftime special, and yet still died alone in his huge studio in Minnesota. Prince meant much to many, and everything to the author Gene Geter, a lifelong fan. Geter's book Prince: When The World Turned Purple is a look at the influence that Prince had both Geter, and also the world.
Gene Geter grew up in New York and was a fan of Prince from his first listen. Scheming to see Purple Rain, and mad at all the people he knew who was seeing it before him. Winning posters of bands that Prince worked with or produced. Buying and returning and buying and returning Prince's concert on VHS, until finally he just kept it, ignoring his families demands. Following all the side projects and acquiring their albums and cassettes, along with bootlegs when available. In addition to Geter's fandom Geter covers the major moments in Prince history, signing, working with Madonna, various interviews, leaving Warner, becoming a sign symbol, and much more. Geter also went to many shows, which are also discussed. And having his dream come true, meeting the artist for a one-on-one, and later going to a listening party. Geter was a fan up till the last day Prince spent on Earth.
One can tell that Geter is a fan from his writing, but he is a fan that can look at both what is good, much, and what is bad, Prince and his bodyguards behavior. The book is well-written, especially the young Geter years as awareness of Prince, and the whole world starting coming together. In addition to himself, Geter covers Prince's history, his best performances on television, who did the best cover of him, and details of the many concerts that Geter was able to go to, which were some really great shows.
A singular look at an incredible artist, one who we shall never see again, and we are far the poorer for his being taken away from us. Recommended for fans, or for people who want to dip their feet in the world of Prince. This book would be a good place to start.
“He was all genres. He was his own genre.” An undeniable “Prince forever” fan, Geter shares his in-depth knowledge and personal thoughts of the artist throughout the book. His anecdotes of encounters and interviews with Prince give readers a private glimpse of the artist that few others have ever experienced. There are also detailed analyses of Prince’s discography, movies, TV appearances, and collaborations with other artists, to name just a few topics. A must-read for anyone who has ever rocked out to “1999”.
If you're a fan. this is a must read. It's a short personal account of the Prince's interactions and impact on the author and it is an interesting read. Lots of detail and information that makes Prince so much realer to me. I won a copy of this book in a Goodreads giveaway for this honest review.
