When Samantha and David decide to have a night out separately with their friends, events overtake them, and the lies lead them down a path of destruction.
To everyone else, it looked like Samantha and David had the perfect life. From meeting at university and falling in love to starting a successful business together, they made a great team. However, as everybody knows, appearances can be deceptive…
That one night out changed everything between them and things would never be the same again; not unless they could face up to their own truths and correct the wrongs.
Neither thought they could become the people they became and do the things they did. But that’s just what happens when two people wronged become consumed by a need for the truth, for justice, and ultimately, for the price to be paid.
If either of them had let it go, it could have all been so different – but neither of them could.
The fast paced and gripping debut novel from crime and psychological thriller author Mark Hurst that will keep you turning the pages as you try to answer the question yourself – could you have let it go?
Debut book from Mark Hurst Dad of Dan so was with great interest I started this book…. It’s a good crime psychological thriller with a bit of domestic noir thrown in would be fair to say that really has you guessing throughout and, for me anyway, quite shell shocked when I finished it, as in well that wasn’t supposed to happen kind of thing, always good when you read a lot 😎 The writing is good and clear, the suspense is there and the characters are unlikeable but good at what they do… As a debut it’s a great start and look forward to reading the next book ( which knowing the Hurst name could be in a fortnight ) seriously though a good read
4.5 ⭐️. Wow this was fast paced. From the offset the punches kept coming. Exciting and well executed. The only problem was it became obvious to me who was behind the plot. David goes to prison for hitting a man in a drunk bar brawl, the man subsequently dies. Samantha divorces David as whilst incarcerated the evidence of his affairs become known. Samatha then finds a cure for cancer and become very influential. This book was a rollercoaster. Only half a star away from 5 as I could guess who done it. A very good story though if only the plot had gone in a different direction, it would be amazing.
I am huge fan of Daniel Hurst so when he announced that his father, Mark, was dipping into the psychological thriller realm I just had to take a peek! Then having been given a preview to his talents with his free short story "The Last Woman", I was keen to delve into his recently published debut. And having just closed the book...where do I begin this review?
So I downloaded a sample to begin with to see if it would be up my street, and it certainly piqued my interest so off to Amazon I went to buy the full book. If RL was not as busy as it is, I would have finished long before now.
The story begins with friends on an innocent night out. Samantha heads into Manchester with the girls whilst her husband David undertakes something of a pub crawl with his mates in Bolton. But the night ends abruptly when news of David's arrest after a pub fight resulted in the death of the other party. The victim, nicknamed Snarler in David's narrative, continued to get in David's face and rile him for whatever reason that alludes David. All he knows is that he threw a punch to leave him alone and he did. Next thing they knew, Snarler is dead and David is arrested.
Samantha remains by her husband's side throughout the investigation and subsequent trial, which doesn't appear to be going his way at all. In the end he is found guilty and imprisoned for manslaughter for a term of ten years with parole in six. And so begins his sentence...
But then new information comes to light regarding her husband and given this information, Samantha takes steps to distance herself from David before removing him as a board member of the fledgling company they started together and then divorcing him. Angry at first, David accepts his lot in life and puts his head down to serve his time.
In the meantime, research they had been working on for many years brings forth results in the form of a lifesaving miracle drug. As a result, Samantha becomes a very wealthy woman, a very powerful woman, with celebrity status and very much in demand. Such demand results in all sorts of problems such as stalkers, which she inadvertently finds herself on the receiving end of, and one who gets just a little too close for comfort.
Then when David is released about five years into his sentence, he meets up with Samantha to bring closure to that chapter of both of their lives. But what he does instead is inadvertently opens a Pandora's box...
This book was fast paced from beginning to end with such short snappy chapters (my favourite kind) that keep the pace moving at a rapid rate. The narratives drift between David and Samantha primarily with the investigating police officer also thrown in on occasion. The story takes us all over the world and culminates down under here in Australia!
Having said that, I do have to mention an error made in relation to Cairns and Cape Tribulation. When Samantha first arrives, the chapter is titled "Queensland, New South Wales". At first I thought it was going to take place over the two states - being Queensland AND New South Wales - but instead Samantha heads to Cairns and Cape Tribulation in far north Queensland. Later in the Epilogue, it referred to New South Wales police looking into an investigation but given as it took place in far North Queensland, it would be Queensland Police that would be investigating. Queensland and New South Wales are two separate states that border each other and not one inside the other's jurisdiction. So that chapter should have been titled "Queensland, Australia". New South Wales is entirely separate and had nothing to do with this story whatsoever. For clarity and accuracy, I felt this should be mentioned to save confusion.
I do love the style of writing. Don't be fooled into thinking "like father, like son" as their styles are completely different. But both are equally enthralling. I love how each of the chapters entirely separate snippets and how it kept the pace moving quickly. The epilogue wraps everything up neatly like a newspaper article. But it's the final lines I was most interested in...could there be a follow-up? The path has been paved for one with those final words. I would certainly be interested to read Blade's story, if that may be the case.
A fast paced thrill-a-minute read weaving a tangled web and mind-boggling twists that will blow you away. Definitely worth reading this fantastic debut.
This book kept me interested throughout and ended up being a very different book than I expected (in a good way). There were lots of twists and turns and I really didn’t like any of the characters - which is something I love in a book.
Will definitely read more of Mark Hurst books in the future!
As a fan of Daniel Hurst, I felt both obligated and curious when I found out his father had a debut novel. Wow, I’m impressed. His writing is good. The story held my interest from the start, and it held plenty of twists and intrigue. I think Mark has found a new calling! Very detailed and well versed throughout!
Thoroughly enjoyed this debut, The Lies by Mark Hurst, incidentally the father of Daniel Hurst. Being a fan of his son's books I was eager to read this book. It certainly didn't disappoint. I was hooked from the start. I became complacent in my thinking, I was convinced knew where the story was going, but i was so very wrong. Revelation after revelation kept on coming. A hard to put down thrilling read . Looking forward to the next book!
Read this because the author is the father of Daniel Hurst, and I love his books. However, this novel was absolutely ridiculous. It could have been written by a five year old. Nonsensical, unoriginal and stupid plot, with terrible dialogue. Don’t waste your time or your money.
I did not see that ending coming. I did not find a single typo. This is a new to me author. There was great character building. I really didn't see the ending. It did get a bit slow in the middle but well worth the read.
Dad's first book lacks the sophistication and talented writing skills of his son. If anything, this highlights how extremely talented and special Daniel Hurst is, and Dad should leave the novel writing to the expert in the family.
I doubt a second book will sell as many copies, as a lot of readers bought this as fans of Daniel who knows how to market and promote.
A brilliant debut thriller read from this author, fast paced with well described characters and I was hooked from the very first page until the brilliant ending.
I have no hesitation in recommending this book and I look forward for more to come from this author.
I absolutely loved this book, it has me hooked from the beginning. The chargers are Awesome and truly believable. I could not put this book down until I had finished it, Mark Hurst is almost not quite but as good as his son Daniel Hurst. If anything I would change are some wording, due to not everyone knows what the meaning of ( DETRITUS ) ( CON CONCOURSE ). So on a personal level I do not have a problem. Yet when I got a message from a friend, whom by the way is not unintelligent not by any stretch of the imagination. She's a fully qualified Nurse, but as I say having received a message from her asking what those two words meant. She knows I am extremely well read and I would know what they meant. It was only after I thought to myself why is it some authors decide to use such words. Is it a case of trying to show people, that he could be better read than the average person. Quite frankly I find it boring to a pint of could actually put me off a particular author. As it's not actually necessary for them to had such words. As in general I would say that the average person would not actually know the meaning of some words. That's genuinely not my intention. A lot of people would have to ask someone. Overall it's a good novel, just hate authors who come across omnipotent worth reading just keep a she out for a few words you may not understand. My farther always told me when I was a child and I asked hi. What something meant in a book. He taught me to read over the paragraph again and then take note of it all into context, then a meaning of a word so so the meaning of the word when you look and it says something to you. What actually makes sense and what words would I use. He would ask if I had worked it out most of the time I got had. Then he told me to use a dictionary then read what the dictionary stated the different meaning of a w word that way I would but normally the first meaning was the correct
Samantha and David are married but one night, as they are each out on the town with each of their group of friends, David gets into a bar fight. Samantha and her friends receive a panic call from one of David's friends saying that he has been arrested for the fight. Turns out that the last punch he gave the guy was enough for him to fall against the corner of the bar and ultimately die. So David is charged with manslaughter.
Samantha sticks with him throughout his trial. He is found guilty and sent to prison for 10 years. Meanwhile samantha has found out that David cheated on her with another woman. She decides to divorce him and cut David out of the business they started together. Soon after, Samantha dedicates herself to her work and is able to discover a new medication that is approved to help treat cancer. She soars, business wise, wealth wise and status-wise.
David stays in prison during this time, reading about her successes and he feels sad, deflated about all he has lost.
Overall I liked the book, kept with it, was engaged with the story. It was refreshing to read a KU book that wasn't about a new mother feeling overwhelmed and husband who is inattentive with strange happenings in the neighborhood :-)
Meet David and his wife, Samantha. A separate night out changes their lives forever. Following an unprovoked attack, David is incarcerated for manslaughter on slim evidence, and Samantha files for divorce. Years later, David is released and seeks the truth after exoneration. Samantha, a ruthless, calculating woman, has a score to settle. There is unfinished business.
I shake my head in disbelief that this novel is a debut. It has a thundering good plot, so adroitly executed and well-researched. I have little business acumen, so the story gave me a feast of high-powered business knowledge. I was enthralled all the way through – an ingenious, tightly woven plot when all the pieces are combined to solve the miscarriage of justice. It exposes how devious people can be behind a veneer of wealth and bonhomie. Who can you trust? The turbulent, explosive ending shows no mercy to the characters or the reader. Will the police be astute enough to figure it out, or will they be outwitted? I certainly didn’t join the dots. Meanwhile, I’m enjoying the sequel.
What a wonderful 5 star debut. The short chapters and lack of time jumps make this a very readable story. David is imprisoned for a crime he didn't actually commit. Samantha divorces him and never looks back. A drug she has developed soon proves to be a lifesaving miracle drug and brings her wealth, fame and celebrity status all over the world. When David is released after 4 years, he and Sam meet up to have a final goodbye, but all hell breaks loose, and the surprises and twists will blow you away. This is a thriller worth reading and a wonderful debut for Mark Hurst. I loved it.
I'm a little confused. My favorite author, Daniel Hurst, told his readers about his dad writing his first novel. However, I found two written by Daniel's father, and they didn't at all feel like they were written by the same person.
First I read, "The Last Woman" (which doesn't even seem to be listed on Goodreads) and absolutely loved it. It was hard to believe it was a debut book. So, of course, I was eager to continue with the other one, "The Lies". As I said, I found it hard to believe that they were written by the same Mark Hurst! "The Lies" was disgusting with the offensive language on about every page, etc, and it gave the feeling that it was written by a beginning writer.
I do hope he'll come up with another as captivating as "The Last Woman" because I really do want to support him.
I give it 4 stars because it is a first novel. This book is not fast paced. In fact, it felt really flat to me for about 2/3 of the book. I didn’t like any of the characters, really, except for Henry. Maybe Blade? The plot unravels mostly as an explanation from a character rather than thru actual detective work during the novel, if that makes sense. But the plot was interesting and surprising as well.
Unrelated…. Was I the only one who missed a bunch of commas? A bit of proofreading is needed.
What an exciting and suspenseful read! Samantha and David are a very successful, wealthy couple who own their own business and all seems to be perfect until he ends up in a bar fight and a man dies. Things really unravel for David from then on. This book kept me guessing until the very surprising ending! I have already started the follow up to this book and it is just as exciting. What a great book and I highly recommend it if you are looking for a thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat.
This is my second read from this author and I am so glad I started his books! I have read all that his son Daniel has written and they are both fabulous authors. The story begins with a couple who meet at university and fall in love and marry. They are both brilliant and on the cusp of finding a cure for some cancers. Then everything goes wrong and the twists and turns are fast and furious. Heading on to book 2 of this 2 book series and if you haven't found this author yet, I highly recommend that you do!
My first book of this author who i felt had a similar writing style to that of Daniel Hurst!
It was certainly a fast paced addictive read for me, part way through i couldnt work out where the story was going though i was intrigued to find out.
There were bits i skimmed over - its the same with most authors where paragraphs drag on that have no significance and read boring but, the book was definitely worth 4 stars.
This is a thrilling read. Wonderful well written plot and story line that had me engaged from the start. Love the well fleshed out characters and found them believable. Great suspense and action with wonderful world building. Can't wait to read what the author brings out next. Recommend reading.
I read a complimentary advance copy of the book; this is my voluntary and honest review.
Enjoyed Mark's first full book - easy to get into good few twists, a lot of characters have to keep on top of all police officers names & their involvement. Ending was predictable but good enough & another slight twist - amazing how money is route of all evil! Looking forward to next book - well done
This was a gripping psychological crime thriller by a debut author. The Hurst name has a knack for writing twisted thrillers! I was hooked by the twist and turns as I read desperately needing to find out what was happening I felt that the plot was very original in that I haven't read anything like it before. The last part of the book was my favorite without a doubt. I love a devious mind lol!
A convoluted story that starts with a bar fight that results in a death., David, Samanthas husband, and partnered in a business they founded. But all isn't what it seems. A fast paced, well- developed characters, and twisty path. Will keep you busy trying to figure this story out! Enjoyed the read!
Just when I thought I had the puzzle pieced together, an unsuspected action rushed in destroyed my smugness. This is one of those books where I kept saying “ one more chapter, then lights out”, and two hours later I was repeating the phrase. So now I go to read the sequel, and it is late evening so I will just read only one chapter 🤣
Samantha and David have the perfect life - a happy marriage and successful business. Then one night out changes everything... A brilliant first novel, I couldn't stop turning the pages until the shocking ending. Loved it!
Whoever said crime doesn't pay, hasn't read a book such as this. A tangled web with more than a few eye opening surprises. A pretty good story from a first time writer.
Great story! The twists keep coming, but you won't be waiting for them, you'll be absorbed in the rest of the story! I only picked this because I enjoy Daniel Hurst books so much, and now Mark Hurst is a new favorite!
Couldn't put this book down. Totally amazing, fantastic and many twists. I cannot recommend this book highly enough. If you like psychological thrillers, you'll love this. I will definitely be following this author.
I quite enjoyed this book but it was written in a weird fashion as if it hadn't been proofread. It scooted off in all sorts of directions and I'm not altogether sure whether I'm satisfied.
