Um… WHAT?

In Everywhere You Look, Jade’s life is consumed by grief and guilt over her father’s tragic death a decade ago until one night she spots him alive through a restaurant window. Determined to uncover the truth, Jade dives into a web of lies and dark secrets that threaten to destroy everything she thought she knew. 🧍🏼‍♂️

Since this is a short story, I won’t go into too much detail, but this was the weakest one so far for me. The only part I liked was the storyline involving her father and the mystery of whether he’s actually alive. That made up most of the story and was genuinely interesting.

The part about her ex-boyfriend made no sense to me and felt random and incomplete by the end. Jade is very dramatic throughout the whole story, and the ending seems impossible.

I would only recommend reading this if you’re trying to finish the full collection like me.

This is book 1 of 6 from the Amazon Stories: Never Tell: Can You Keep a Secret? collection. I’ll be reading the remaining four soon as well.

“I should just turn around and go. But I need answers. My stomach is in knots, my heart beating furiously.”

Sorry to say, I felt the same – except for the stomach and heart part. The first half of the story is about having substituted an absolute p*ick of a lover as the male figure in her life to stand in for her late, much-loved father.

“Benedict was the bad habit I couldn’t break, but I absolved myself by believing that everyone has a bad habit. I don’t smoke or do drugs. My addiction is the need to feel special.”

It is obvious to the reader that the only thing Benedict thinks is special is in his mirror.

Why did I continue? It’s short, and in the opening scene, she is dining alone on her birthday and suddenly sees her father looking in the restaurant window. Impossible! He’s been dead for 10 years. Is she nuts? Ask Aunt Sally, his sister? So… on I went.

The answer is a good twist that deserved a better story to lead up to it. Surely the Constantine sisters (who write as ‘Liv’), must produce better work than this to be best-sellers.

Thanks to #NetGalley and Amazon Original Stories for a copy of the #NeverTell collection, of which this is the first story.

Everywhere You Look is book #1 in Never Tell, which is a 6 short book collection from Amazon. I am personally not a big audiobook fan, but I listened to this one while I was getting ready for the day, and it was okay. Nothing special or amazing but decent enough to keep me listening. I prefer longer novels with more backstory and depth, but this is good if you are looking for a quick read!

the setup…
Jade’s father died ten years ago but it still feels like it was yesterday. They had a tradition on her birthday and this year she’s honoring it again, going out to dinner in New York. But this time, it’s got a darker purpose. Before she can execute her plan she suddenly sees a man illuminated in the window who is a dead ringer for her father.

the heart of the story…
Jade is sort of a mess and that’s an understatement. It’s revealed in parts and pieces, transitioning from past to present. I wasn’t sure what direction it would take and she was kind of…unlikeable. But the journey to find the man in the window became much more interesting, despite the drama.

the narration…
I thought Quay was perfect as Jade. She sounded a bit immature and off kilter, just like the character. Great choice!

the bottom line…
I love this duo writing team’s full length stories, never a miss. There’s an art to short stories where they achieve the same objectives as their lengthier brethren, just with brevity. I liked this story as it was saved by the ending but Jade needed many more pages to adequately flesh out her character. This was entertaining and I enjoyed it. But it won’t be a favorite. 3.5 stars

*4.5* Everything and the kitchen sink has been thrown into the story. It is OTT and ridiculous, but very fun to read. The story begins with Jade, who has trouble with relationships after the death of her beloved father 10 years earlier. On the anniversary of his death, she happens to see him, and so begins the story.

Highly entertaining, extremely reasonable, and yes, maybe a tad unrealistic (putting it mildly).

"How well do you know people? How well do they know you?"

Everywhere You Look is the first of six short stories that comprise the new Amazon Never Tell series. Each short story is based on the theme of secrets and is written by a different suspense/thriller author.

This story centers around Jade. We open at a restaurant where she is celebrating her 28th birthday- alone and depressed. After losing her dad ten years prior to a terrible accident she had decided tonight is the night she will end her life...until she glances up to the sidewalk and sees a man she fully believes is her father. As she rushes outside to confirm her suspicions he has seemingly vanished as quickly as he appeared. Her suicidal thoughts are now replaced by the urge to find out the truth, and she will stop at nothing.

This story is told in both past + present timelines and started off with a bang. Suspenseful and a real page turner, I couldn't wait to see how it would all unfold. Unfortunately, the ending felt abrupt and unfinished. I needed a few more pages to turn!! 2.5 stars rounded up.

Thank you to NetGalley and Amazon Original Stories for an advanced copy of this series in exchange for my honest review. Super excited to check out the remaining 5 stories.

Oh dear. Such basic writing that I find it hard to believe the author is a best seller. The end is too silly for words.

Everywhere You Look by Liv Constantine – 1 star

Content warnings: death, murder, attempted suicide, kidnapping, pedophilia

I hated this. The author (technically two authors – this is a pseudonym for a pair of sisters) just attempted to cram as much trauma to one girl as the could in 50 pages. The story is nowhere near long enough to actually have anything to say or to make any of it touching. This is so shallow and meaningless. I didn't feel anything for Jade, not even once, even with all the terrible things that happened to her.

It is absolutely ludicrous that in a story this short we have

As far as content goes, I tried to list some of the most egregious examples contained within this very short work, but the entire work reads like one trauma gut-punch after another and none of it is handled with sensitivity or character depth or growth. The author has absolutely nothing to say about any of these horrible topics.

There's also an entire romance subplot with a cheating narcissist that serves literally no purpose but to take up valuable real estate on the page in an already too-short for the premise story.

All-in-all, what could have been an intriguing and compelling thriller is condensed into a vapid, shallow short story that somehow manages to swallow up whole every detail and idea without having a single thing to say.

I enjoyed this.

This is a story of the death of a young girls father. I enjoyed this because it made sense to me. Not wordy, but to the point. A nicely written story I really enjoyed.

I’m such a sucker for a good thriller. I honestly loved this one so much. Sure, it’s simple, but sometimes simple is really good. There are still a few twists along the way and I love a HEA. 4.5 ✨

It's A Wonderful Life!
Review of the Amazon Original Stories Kindle eBook (March 19, 2024), released simultaneously with the Audible Original audiobook.

My lede is a bit lame, but the memory of the old time Jimmy Stewart / Christmas redemption movie from 1946 was what struck me as I started writing this review. Jade is a bit of a sad sack who has decided to end her life in New York City after having one final meal at a restaurant where she always went with her father to celebrate her birthday until he died in a car accident 10 years earlier. Jade blames herself for his death and her life has spiraled downwards ever since. But then she sees her father outside the restaurant!

A series of pretty fantastic and elaborate coincidences and convenient revelations then follow which lead to a final twist. None of it is very realistic but it did keep me reading to find out how it all turns out. Most of my satisfaction was actually from a karma payback subplot which I won't spoil 🤐.

Everywhere You Look is one of six Amazon Original Stories Kindle eBooks/Audible Audio audiobooks released on March 19, 2024 as part of the Never Tell Collection of short stories which are promoted with the collective description:
"How well do you know people? How well do they know you? Six award-winning, bestselling authors of suspense explore the lingering threat of secrets and the inescapable fear that they can’t stay buried forever. No matter how dark the hiding place, the consequences of revealing the truth can bring out the worst in lovers, friends, family, and strangers."

I tagged this as spoiler to explain why I didn’t

Rating this short story is difficult for me. I enjoy everything Liv Constantine (or as I say The Constantine Sisters) writes and I enjoyed listening to the audiobook.

At times I found myself talking back to the narrator. As a graduate of Law&Order law school with a PhD in SVU, even I know that kidnapping has a statute of limitations. Granted, this fact would negate the whole story, but I bet most thriller readers know this too. One of the three characters who knew the backstory had to have watched the shows. Also lawyers have confidentiality, even if their clients admit to crimes they’ve committed. The only exception is an ongoing crime where people are in peril. The individual could have easily sought legal advice any way along the way.

The lack of legal research is the reason for four not five stars.

Eager to add some short story reading to tide me over, I looked to the Never Tell collection. This first piece by Liz Constantine left me curious and intrigued at the same time. Jade lost her father a decade ago, the victim of a horrible accident. She holds onto a great deal of guilt and has let grief steer her to dangerous places. While out one night, Jade is sure she sees her father in a restaurant window, even though it is impossible. He’s gone when Jade approaches the window, though there’s something that seems off. Refusing to let her current life dramas take over, Jade hopes to find her father before she loses him a second time, only to learn some new truths about herself. Liz Constantine delivers a thought-provoking story that is sure to have readers needing more.

While it was a brief story, I was quite interested in all that Liz Constantine had to say in this piece. The story builds from the opening page and does not let go until all is revealed by the final sentence. Momentum is gained and things take needed turns to fuel an ongoing story that is sure to keep the reader wondering. Constantine is able to captivate the reader and keep hold until she pushes the final truth, though its resonance is not entirely able to ensure proper closure. There are some dangling threads left, I also felt the ending rushed to some conclusions.

Characters are impactful and present a variety of perspectives. Readers will enjoy the varied personalities who emerge through the reading experience, many of whom flavour things to add new layers to the story. While Jade is surely front and centre, there are others who flavour things and help push the protagonist to the brink. Little time to connect with the reader, characters are raw and deliver their piece in short order.

Surprises are core in a story of this nature, though Constantine did not have enough time to really create too many twists, both those she did were well executed. There is the underlying search that Jade has in the piece, though the developments that push her to the brink are not lost to the attentive reader. I enjoyed the quick changes that Liz Constantine did to the piece, but would have liked something a little longer to add something more intense to develop some of the themes, without leaving the rushed ending I mentioned above.

Kudos, Madam Constantine, for a great read.

Everywhere You Look is a short story in the Never Tell Collection by Liv Constantine. At twenty-eight, Jade Grey has been mourning the loss of her father for ten years and now, with the betrayal of the man she’d hoped to marry, is ready to end her life. But, as she honours the filial tradition of a dinner in New York before she ends her life, she catches a glimpse of the impossible: her father, outside the restaurant. Have the last ten years been a lie? No matter how much friends and family try to convince her she must be mistaken, Jade is determined to find out the truth. Short but packed with intrigue.

Excellent narrator pulled me in immediately.

"Everywhere You Look" is part of the Amazon Never Tell collection. The narrator, who is new to me, did an excellent job of portraying Jade.

This story may not be entirely believable, but it's told with the eloquence that the authors are known for. It pulled me in immediately and kept me hooked until the final reveal unfolded. I'm so excited to read their upcoming book. They never disappoint.

This was just plain silly and boring most of the time.

Turning the final page left a rather sour taste in my mouth, accompanied by an awful sense of cringiness—if that’s even a word.

Excessive—yes, that’s the right way to describe it. It felt like the author took all the bad things in the world, crammed them into fewer than a hundred pages, and left out any semblance of character growth or depth. The so-called revelations were sub-par, tossed in purely for shock value, and ultimately failed to add any sense to the plot. And then there was the toxic romance, which served absolutely no purpose whatsoever.

As for the ending? Yet another hallmark-movie-inspired dramatic scene that only deepened my bubbling annoyance with the whole thing.

Sorry.

This story had an intriguing premise, and although it kept my attention throughout, the ending was a bit far-fetched and convenient. A quick read but nothing special.
