Detective Dylan and the Case of the Missing Mail is an adventure story in the A Youth Sleuths Chapter Book series that will delight young ones. MJ has written a story that is fun and interesting.
We all love a good mystery but no one more than Dylan. So, when the mail goes missing Dylan is your man or should I say Detective Dylan is your man, err boy? I mean who are you going to call when a crime goes down in the neighbourhood?
As Dylan and his tribe of one little sister and a furry four-footed friend set out to find the truth the fun and mayhem begins.
MJ has given her readers a unique story and her wonderful narrative brings it to life.
This book is aimed at Tweens who I am sure would love to receive it as a gift with Christmas or birthdays coming up.
It is a fun tale that should not be missed.

So fun!

I’m so glad I stumbled across this book because I’m getting it for my nine-year-old daughter for Christmas. She has a detective show that she really loves on YouTube, and I know she’ll love reading this aloud with me. The story is short and sweet, yet full of great adventure, for children, around the ages of 7 to 10. I’m sure that my daughter will be hooked on this series, and I can’t wait for the next one to come out. The resources at the end are great for educators as well.5

When a neighbor’s mail goes missing, a determined young detective is on the case in this lively and engaging children’s story by MJ Murray.

It’s the first week of summer break. Eight year-old Dylan is bored. Especially following two days of rain. Dylan is waiting for his “deluxe detective kit” to arrive in the mail. It’s sold by his favorite TV show, Youth Sleuths. The show encourages kids to solves mysteries and develop their deductive skills by using clues to solve a crime no one else could.

When a neighbor’s mail suddenly goes missing, Dylan springs into action. Along with his kid sister Emily and their faithful canine sidekick Theodore, “Detective Dylan” launches an investigation to track down the missing missives. Besides. There’s a ten dollar reward in the mix if he can find the elusive mail. So Dylan the Detective & Company are on the case! They’re a bit stumped until they notice some unique clues that appear in the mud following that unwelcome rain.

What follows is a light and fun “whodunit” that encourages young reader to put on their “thinking caps” and join Dylan and pals as they try to find out what happened to their neighbor’s mail.

Scene stealer: Theodore the dog.

At roughly sixty pages, the length of this book is just right. There’s adequate time and space to flesh out the plot as well as introduce and develop main characters. But it’s not so long that young readers will tire and lose interest. Chapters are relatively short. The writing is upbeat and lively and will keep the target audience of young readers engaged. The tone is bright and sudsy. The text encourages readers to “join in” as Dylan and Emily hunt for clues and try to piece them together to solve the mystery. It’s just fun!

This book also includes some “bonuses” following the end of the story. This includes sections on Meet the Characters, ELA & Math Resources and Classroom Prompts and Vocabulary for Grades K and 1.

Detective Dylan and the Case of the Missing Mail is Book 1 in the Youth Sleuths chapter book series. More are on the way. So keep an eye out! I sure will!

Detective Dylan and the Case of the Missing Mail is the first book in the Youth Sleuths Chapter Book Series by MJ Murray. During the first week of summer break, Dylan waits for his detective kit from his favorite television show, Youth Sleuths. His sister, Emily, and their dog, Theodore, wait with Dylan, and when he grabs the package from the mailman, they follow him as he unpacks the case and stumbles upon his first mystery. Mrs. Lane has been away from her home, but when she returns, someone has taken the mail out of her mailbox. Dylan accepts his first mystery and, with Emily and Theodore at his side, travels around his neighborhood searching for clues.

MJ Murray has written the perfect book for beginning chapter readers! Murray’s characters are well-developed, and even Theodore plays a significant part in the story. The mystery is central to the book, but Murray also explores the dynamic between Dylan and Emily, growing their relationship, revealing their bond, and strengthening it as they research clues. Illustrations by Amanda Fletcher clarify each part of the story, and readers will love seeing Theodore’s antics in action. The author engages with readers by writing a fun story and inviting them to read the answers to common questions about the series. Murray provides a list of high-frequency words for each chapter, giving educators prompts for discussions. Young readers who enjoy chapter books involving mysteries will love Detective Dylan and the Case of the Missing Mail.

Perfect for 1st-2nd Grade Classroom/Homeschool Use!

As a teacher, instructional coach, and PD facilitator, I have used and evaluated countless texts and instructional resources. When looking at a text, I look for depth, interest and versatility. The debut book of the series, Detective Dylan and the Case of the Missing Mail, has all of these and more.

The depth of story events and character interaction embody Growth Mindset, problem solving skills and social skills. The mystery adds an aspect of suspense that will hook readers and engage them until the end.

Through the story itself and included discussion prompts, students will make text to self connections, as well as text to text connections. Likewise, the Tier Two words have the ability to further engage students and help develop their vocabulary.

Educators can utilize the text as a shared reading and/or sprinkled with partner/independent reading.

All of this is paired with an extensive set of downloadable ELA and Math resources designed to engage students in finding meaning, improving comprehension skills, and developing reading and fact fluency.

It’s rare to find text with the ability to entertain AND educate. The Detective Dylan series is definitely one to watch out for!

Detective Dylan and the Case of the Missing Mail (A Youth Sleuths Chapter Book Series) by MJ Murray - Review by Britney Nicole Humphreys

We give this book 5 stars!

This book shows a realistic relationship between siblings close in age and shows how a big brother should treat his little sister. I love that the book has vocabulary words at the end and that it has access for math and ELA worksheets since we homeschool.

My girls (ages 9 and 7) loved the whodunit aspect. They were writing the clues down as we read the book and trying to figure out who the culprit was. They loved reading about Detective Dylan, his sister Emily, and their adorable (and helpful) pup Theodore. My girls said they do not feel that Emily is a Tattle-tale, but we'll leave that up to you to decide when you read the book.

I recommend these books for parents who have kids that are reluctant readers. My girls love to read, but I think this would work for kids who do not want to read chapter books. The chapters are short, there are pictures included throughout, and the book itself is 61 pages over 10 chapters. It took us about 45 minutes to read-and that is with the girls asking questions and guessing who did it and why.

Eight-year-old Dylan is on summer break and can’t wait for his Deluxe Detective Kit to arrive in the mail. When his kit arrives, he’s ready to see if there are any crimes for him to solve. His sister, Emily the Tattle Tale, wants to help him too. Even though he doesn’t want to let her, their mom told him he must be nice to her. Their dog, Theodore, is always up for the adventure if there is food and belly rubs.
Their neighbor, Mrs. Lane, has just come back from vacation and tells the kids she can’t find her mail. Dylan is ready to use the items that came in his detective kit and Mrs. Lane offers him a $10 reward to find her mail.
Dylan and Emily ask the other neighbors and neighborhood kids if they noticed anything suspicious in the area. They also search for clues around Mrs. Lane’s mailbox. Finally, all the clues come together, and Dylan solves the case of the missing mail!
This is a book in the Youth Sleuths Chapter Book series. I enjoyed reading about how Dylan used his detective skills to solve the case and can’t wait to read about his other adventures. I was glad to see that him and his sister were able to work together and get along to solve the case.

Detective Dylan and the Case of the Missing Mail is the first book in A Youth Sleuths Chapter Book Series, and debut novel, by M.J. Murray.
Budding detective Dylan is on the case when his neighbour’s mail goes missing. With the help of his sister, Emily, and their dog Theodore, these sleuths are determined to solve their first case. What ensues makes for a fun read.
This is a children’s chapter book with an easy to read and understand plot that captures the imagination by engaging the reader with a fun story that contains some ‘learning’ opportunities along the way. There are some fun, black and white, illustrations sprinkled throughout that help inspire the imagination.
This is aimed at children who are just starting to read ‘chapter books’ on their own, or with help- and contains a few ‘harder’ words to challenge them as they read (Reading Tier 2). There are also lessons in problem solving, working together, perseverance, taking initiative, finding ‘clues’, family, friendship, and more.
Happy Reading…

Thank you, M.J. Murray!

Detective Dylan is super excited when his new detective kit comes in the mail. His sister is also excited but told to stay far away from his kit, as it cost him 8 weeks worth of allowance! When the neighbor lady can’t seem to locate her missing mail, including pictures of her grandkids, Dylan and his faithful sister assistant jump into action. They interview the neighbors, collect fingerprints, and keep notes in their notebook. When a set of symbols occur in the mud, they have a big clue and they are eventually able to solve the mystery of the missing mail.

This was a great book that includes some slightly bigger words that some kids may not know. There is a section at the end of the book that goes over these words. A great vocabulary builder for the eager reader! I’m looking forward to the next book to come out, expected in 2024!!

Detective Dylan and the Case of the Missing Mail
By: MJ Murray

As an educator, I am always looking for new authors, books, and series to add to my classroom library. I am looking for books that I know that my kids will love and that they will be able to read independently yet will still hold their attention. This book delivers on all of those. Dylan is such a fun main character. He wants to be a detective and is doing everything he can to work towards that goal - buying a kit, watching tv shows, you name it he’s done it. Dylan even gets to have his little sister help out. Each chapter is entertaining as the reader is following Dylan as he tries to solve the case. As a teacher, I loved the resources that are available to teacher as well as the amount of vocabulary support found within the book! I definitely recommend picking this one up.

Dylan loves a show about detectives called ‘Youth Sleuths’ and wants to be one himself. After saving his allowance he ordered a detective kit. When the kit came in he was eager to begin his new job. When he finds out his neighbour's mail is missing, he jumps on the case with the help of his little sister and dog.

Dylan and his sister run around the neighbourhood looking for clues, they start off by asking the adults around the street, then moving on to the children. Will they be able to solve the case of the missing mail?

This book was very fast paced which would keep children engaged from start to finish. I also like the relationship between Dylan and his little sister. Even though she is younger, he still tries his hardest to include her in his game. Plus the dog was cute and funny.

Who didn't want to be a detective when they were younger? I know that I did, and this is a story that opened so many doors for thought. This is a cute story about Dylan and how his little sister Emily grow closer, especially when they have to learn to work together. Dylan wants nothing more than to be a detective, he has saved his allowance to pay for a detective kit. Dylan has even watched every episode of Youth Sleuths so he can learn how to be a good detective. This story is well written and easy for the little ones to follow and enjoy. I loved that the author answered the readers' questions at the end, and that she thought to add a new word to each chapter. Later, she puts a vocabulary list from the book and the definitions at the back for the little ones to continue to learn. This is a great start to this series, and I look forward to reading what comes next for Dylan and Emily.

Detective Dylan and the Case of the Missing Mail (A Youth Sleuths Chapter Book Series) by MJ Murray

Detective Dylan and the Case of the Missing Mail (A Youth Sleuths Chapter Book Series) is a super fun adventure aimed for children ages 5-8. My son is almost six and in kindergarten and just learning to read so it was fun for both of us. The illustrations were fun and helped bring the story to life. We read a little at a time but you could probably finish it in on sitting. This is a fun adventure about Dylan and the missing mail. Detective Dylan and his sister follow all the clues as they try to solve the mystery of the missing mail. I highly recommend reading this book to find out if they solve the mystery of the missing mail. My son and I are looking forward to reading more from this Author.

It is the summer holidays and Dylan is waiting by the mailbox for a very exciting and very important package, it is his detective kit from the Youth Sleuths, his favourite show.

As Dylan unpacks the kit with his little sister, she just will not stop talking and asking to use it as well, so he says she can be his assistant, as soon as they have a crime to solve.

Just as they are wondering what their first case will be, the neighbour next door comes out to her mailbox and finds that her mail is missing, and this is just what Dylan needed, his first case, but can he, his little sister and their adorable dog find the clues, solve the mystery and catch the culprit?

This is a lovely story for and children who are always exploring the world around them and have a love of mystery, as well as puzzles and treasure hunts, as they read along and become a detective alongside Dylan.

Such a great book for young readers getting into chapter books. I recommend for younger elementary students. The story is easy to follow along, has adventure and wonderful characters, you get a little pov of their dog. I know kids who have siblings will relate with the relationship between Dylan and his sister Emily. I feel the story introduces the right amount of characters for kids to try to guess who took the mail and the illustrations go really well with the chapters. The author also includes a link through TeachersPayTeachers for teachers or homeschoolers to check out some worksheets to go along with the book. There’s also a list of high frequency words in the end, I really like they included educational resources.

Detective Dylan and the Case of the Missing Mail is a cute story about an eight-year-old boy named Dylan who is super excited about becoming a detective over the summer and solving mysteries. After receiving a parcel in the mail that contains his new Super Sleuth Spy Kit, he sets off with his little sister Emily, that he lovingly refers to as Tattle Tale, and their beloved pet dog, to solve the case of the neighbor’s missing mail. They set off knocking on their neighbor’s doors, asking questions, and gathering evidence such as fingerprints. This was an engaging and fun chapter book that teaches children about teamwork, problem solving, and family. The book contains black and white illustrations throughout that help to bring the story to life and keep the attention of young readers.

Dylan is excited for his new Youth Sleuth kit to come in the mail so that he can become a detective like the Youth Sleuths on his favorite program. When his kit arrives, he and his sister Emily and their dog Theodore set out to help their neighbor figure out what has happened to her missing mail. Their neighbor usually has another neighbor pick up her mail, but doesn’t this time, and suddenly her mail has gone missing. As the kids set out to uncover clues and try to solve the mystery, they learn to ask questions, research and interpret clues together. This is a great book for young kids; rather it is read to them by a parent or as a newer independent reader.

This book is a fun and entertaining story about a young sleuth all set on solving mysteries. This book is the perfect level of my daughter, who is just progressing onto chapter books and slightly more challenging reading. She was engaged with the book right from the start, which was made easier by the pictures scattered throughout.
Dylan was an enjoyable character and he was easy to connect with. It was fun to watch him try and figure out the mystery of the missing mail and I loved that I got to share this with my daughter. This is a book that we have come back to a few times already and I am sure we will read a few more.

This was such a lovely read and a great way to introduce young readers to new and exciting genres. I liked that the book was also introducing chapters to children and would encourage them to read a chapter a night before bed maybe. The story was easy to follow with delightful characters that will definitely be great for children to begin those first connections with. This reminds me of the books that I enjoyed when I was younger. With the mystery surrounding the missing mail to will certainly get children thinking about the outcome of the story.
A wonderful read and one that young readers are sure to enjoy!

Oh no, Mrs Lane’s mail is missing and she has no idea who took it. No worries, Detective Dylan and his assistants, his sister Emily and their dog Theodore are on the case!

As Dylan follows the clues, the reader gets to meet other neighbors and experience some of Theodore’s hijinks.

A fun exciting mystery written for young children. Easy to understand language and black and white illustration make this an engaging read for the whole family.

A barcode is included at the end of the story to access math and reading activities that can be used to extend engagement with the story.

I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.

Detective Dylan was a super cute, fairly easy read for a young child. I have two kids the ages as the siblings (Dylan and his younger sister, Emily) and enjoyed them solving the mystery together! There was definitely some sibling bickering in the beginning, which I feel like most children will relate to, and Theodore, the dog, as the sidekick was perfect!
Some of the things I really loved about this book was a few themes about not giving up and looking at all of the clues. They really did a great job "solving the case" and this is definitely a book I'll have my kids read! I see many potential Detective Dylan books in the future!

This was a great book to read with both of my kiddos! I have an 8-year-old and 12-year-old, and we really enjoyed reading this together. It was a perfect fit for my youngest as he sometimes gets bored by chapter books because he still enjoys the pictures. We were pleased to find that there are lovely illustrations that broke up paragraphs and chapters to keep our interest. It’s fun to hear how everyone’s imagination works as we read through and played detective on our own! I highly recommend this fun and engaging story that is easy to follow, and we can’t wait to see what the next book brings!
