Along for the Ride: A Romcom-ystery (Detectives in Love

Rate this book
A waitress accused of murder. A detective bent on proving her innocence. Dating lessons gone horribly awry…

Emily Brown has hit rock bottom. Dead end job, newly single, and, the cherry on top, her license just got suspended. Enter Reed Montgomery, the annoyingly attractive detective who offers to drive her to and from work in exchange for dating lessons. There’s only one problem—Reed is her ex boyfriend’s brother and he doesn’t remember Emily. Oh and also, Emily might be developing a teeny-tiny crush on him.

Make that two problems, then.

Emily has the situation all in hand though. Reed has his sights set on a beautiful lawyer, so the beautiful lawyer she will help him get. Then everyone can move on with their lives none the wiser about both her duplicity and her crush. Whew.

But when one of her fellow waitresses is found dead at the restaurant, a series of unfortunate coincidences turns Emily into the top suspect. Now she may have to rely on Reed for even more than rides. She’ll need him to help prove her innocence. All while keeping her feelings for him from spiraling out of control.

Right, so four problems, then…

Oh my goodness... give me ALL the romcom-ysteries... I am HERE for it!

Along for the Ride has everything that I love about romcoms--- the humor, the romance, the swoon-iness... and then throws a fantastic murder mystery into the mix... and I absolutely loved everything about it! Right from the start, this story drew me in. When we first meet Emily, she has just been dumped and is pulled over for speeding by none other than the ex's brother Reed... only he doesn't remember who she is. Now, I've said before that the whole ex's sibling/wrong brother thing should not work... and yet, every book I've read with some sort of play on that trope has become a favorite for me... and this one is absolutely no exception! Throw in some dating lessons, fantastic banter and chemistry, and a good dose of found family... and there was really just so much to love about this story. Emily and Reed together were just absolute perfection.

As much as I loved Emily and Reed, the side characters introduced were every bit as wonderful as well. They helped to take this story to the next level. I was so excited that this is the first in the series, because I absolutely need more of these characters! We were given just a taste of the story to come next and I cannot wait!

If you're looking for a book that has all the fun of a closed-door romcom with some mystery thrown in, you absolutely do NOT want to miss this one!

**I received an ARC for consideration. All opinions are my own.

This was laugh out loud hilarious. Just the kind of light-hearted read I was looking for. There were some tense moments, it's a murder mystery after all, but nothing major that freaked me out, and I'm pretty squeamish.

For those who normally follow my reviews, this is NOT a Christian story, nor does it claim to be one, but it is clean. I noted no swearing (just references to people cursing under their breath, etc) and the romance was completely clean with only kissing.

Recommended for any lovers of contemporary romance and rom coms.

This had a good mixture of forbidden romance, age-gap trope, mystery to solve, and a cast of characters that enhanced the reading journey. I'm looking forward to book 2.

This was such a cute romcom mystery, it had so many fun and sweet tropes (grumpy and sunshine, forced proximity, dating lessons, ex-boyfriend's brother) and a maybe(in my opinion) out of place third act breakup. The whole book is filled with hilarious mishaps and relatable dialogue, and whilst the pacing felt a little slow at times, and the plot twists shocking only because they were...farfetched, it still felt cosy and comfortable, and I can definitely say I was hooked to find out answers!

The book follows 22 year old FMC Emily, a waitress at a restaurant, and 30 year old MMC Reed, a detective. The pair happen to meet when Reed pulls Emily over for speeding, unknowing that his younger brother has just broken up with the very same woman he's badgering. When Reed gets Emily's license suspended, he hardly bats an eyelash, but when he bumps into her at the restaurant she works at, the pair end up making a deal; Reed will act as Emily's personal taxi for the few months of her suspension, and in return Emily's got to give Reed dating lessons so he can ask out the pretty lawyer he likes at work.

All goes well at first, until the pair begin falling for each other. On top of that, a waitress is found dead in the freezer at the restaurant Emily works at, and she's suspect number one, Reed's determined to prove her innocence so they work together whilst still fighting their growing attractions.

The romance is very slow burn yet sweet, it's fairly tame and both characters definitely have chemistry. The friendships Emily had with her roommates was equally adorable, and I loved that Emily taught yoga and self-defence classes and wanted to open her own studio.Reed was such a shyer, golden retriever of a man. He's not the typical charming hero, and I really liked that. The ending wraps the story up, giving us a HEA and hints at the next couple, Lucy and Detective Stafford, which I know is going to be so funny!

3/5 🌟

“That sound—the mingling of our laughter together—it fills my heart in a way I’m unfamiliar with. In a way that makes me desperate for more.

“Why, Reed Montgomery,” Emily drawls, “you’re laughing again. I think I broke you.”

“Nah, pretty sure you fixed me,” I say without thinking.”

I loved every single page of this book! The story was so much fun with SO many laugh out loud moments! The writing is witty, sharp, and perfectly paced. The characters are fabulous, and the romance—murder mystery combination was just magical!

Emily is going through a tough time. Her boyfriend just dumped her, and after one too many speeding tickets, her license gets suspended.

Detective Reed Montgomery is handsome but so stoic and annoying to Emily. He offers to drive her to and from work in exchange for dating lessons. It’s not long before Reed loses inte#rest in the woman he was crushing on and completely falls for sunshiny and adorable Emily.

Emily helps crack Reed’s stoic nature, and she falls for him, but the boyfriend that dumped her was Reed’s brother, making things a bit complicated.

On top of that, one of Emily’s fellow waitresses is found dead at the restaurant they worked at and Emily quickly turns into the top suspect.

Luckily she’s got Reed on her side, who is determined to clear her name and spend forever with her.

Others might love this book, but it just wasn't for me. This book had too many problems for me to get past. First, the way the investigation was handled was incredibly inaccurate. I can't imagine a world in which that entire department wasn't fired for mishandling an investigation. Second, I just could not connect with the main characters. At first I loved Reed, but I felt like he totally changed his whole character a quarter of the way through the book and became just flat and love-struck with no real tension or growth as a character. And finally, I just was not invested at all in the mystery-side of the plot. There were too many characters and it didn't capture me so when the romance became all of a sudden very 0-50mph in half a chaptee, the whole book fell apart for me 🤷🏻‍♀️

Holy smokin’ hot cops 🥵 How have a gone so long without reading this series 📚!?

Emily. Emily’s character is absolutely hilarious😂 Her train of thought, her sense of humor, and her spontaneity were just absolute PERFECTION 💋. 10/10 dating coach, except, you’re not supposed to fall for your student 😘 (I would have too though 🤣) ORRR you exes older brother 🙈 OOOOORRRRR a detective on a case you’re a lead suspect in 😳

Reed. He has made it on the list of fictional men I would marry 💍 no questions asked. Other than the fact he is so flippin’ hot 🥵 Reed has a heart of GOLD! 💛 his social anxiety was relatable and I loved seeing how despite his fear, he wanted to try 🥹 And DANGGG once that man was comfortable… que the giggling into my pillow and squealing 🤭😍

I loved 🥰 every single part of this book. I laughed out loud 🤣 gasped 😮 screamed 😱 shed a few tears 😭 and so much more. The crime ☠️ the set up 🚨 the suspects 🚓 the ROMANTIC TENSION ❤️‍🔥 oh my heart. And that kissing scene 🫡 might as well call me a popsicle in an AZ summer because I melted in two seconds flat 🫠

⚠️CW: abandonment, murder, mild innuendo⚠️

Oh my goodness this book was absolutely hilarious and thrilling! It's got romance, comedy, clumsy and relatable characters, mystery, lovable side characters and so much more!!
If you want a clean romance with plot twists and an exciting plot this is for you!!! I loved how relatable both Emily and Reed were. They were not "perfect" which is so fun to read! The mystery itself was exciting and kept me guessing the entire time.
Everything about this book was so fun!
If you love grumpy x sunshine, ex's older brother, clumsy and even more clumsy romance.... definitely read this book!
10/10

A "light" romance that starts on a bet and a speeding ticket between a waitress and a policeman. A murder is mixed in but the drama level is low as is the pace which is complicated by past boyfriend and a missing mother's return.

This was my first Rom-com mystery and I loved it. I had so many laugh out loud moments ( sometimes laughing when it probably wasn’t even appropriate to 🤭 )
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The book covers cool illustration piqued my interest and once I read the blurb, I was hooked. I can’t wait to read more from this series.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Detective Reed had me crackling up and I loved that he was a plant dad.🪴 The banter between the detectives will have you engaged while reading and will have you laughing. I loved the humor throughout the whole book despite it being a murder mystery which made it a light hearted read.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Emily was too cute, and I loved her sense of humor. She also had me cracking up! Her whole world came tumbling down while she took the rap for a fellow waitress who was murdered. Poor thing. Reed was bent on proving her innocence and I loved how he became less uptight throughout the story. All thanks to Emily. 😁
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
There were so many twists and turns that I could not put my phone down until I found out who was guilty. ( I read on my kindle app on my iPhone 📱)
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I had so many annotations while reading and shared some of my favorites. I was so into reading 📖 I forgot to screenshot the movie references. I remember one was from Legally Blond.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I’m looking forward to reading “Along Came You”!

What do you get when you take all the feel good laugh out loud moments of a RomCom and mix it with all the puzzles to solve in a mystery. You get a
RomCom-ystery that’s what. This book had all the fun moments that you would find in a romcom and all the whodunnit moments of a mystery. If your looking for a hot swoony detective who is a bit grumpy and is a little awkward around women Then Reed’s your man. Enter Emily the sweet, kind, and bubbly waitress who’s down on her luck and just had her license suspended. Reed offers to drive her to work and back if she will be his dating coach. Just when things seem to be looking up for Emily her coworker is murdered and she becomes the prime suspect. Now Emily may have to rely on the hot detective for more than a ride to work? Can Reed solve the crime or will his dating coach go down for murder?
This is a dual point of view the start of a series but can be read as a standalone. This is a clean kissing only romcom. Tropes include Dating Coach, Ex-Boyfriend Older Brother, Age Gap Romance, Mystery & and a little bit of forced proximity. This story had lots of tv references included are Legally Blonde & Friends. I love the minor characters in this story as well and just so happens two them are in book two of the series so I can’t wait for it.
There was so many moments were I couldn’t help but laugh out loud. Lots of swoony moments between Emily & Reed with a mystery to solve. And don’t worry there were no gory details about the murder.

Along for the Ride" is a delightful blend of romance, comedy, and mystery. This sweet romcom-ystery takes you on an adventure filled with detective talks, dating lessons, and the classic grumpy x sunshine trope that we all adore.
The story follows an intriguing mix of a detective's investigative world with a romantic twist. The pacing is spot-on, keeping you engaged from start to finish The characters are well-developed and relatable. The grumpy yet protective male main character (mmc) and the sunshine heroine create a dynamic duo that brings out the best in each other.
From detective talks that add a layer of suspense to dating lessons that offer charming moments, the book balances its elements perfectly. The protective nature of the mmc adds to the heartfelt moments, making the romance even sweeter.
The novel is filled with laugh-out-loud moments that add an extra layer of enjoyment. The witty banter and comedic situations make it a fun and entertaining read.
Along for the Ride" is a must-read for fans of romcoms with a dash of mystery and humor.
@authorheathermiekstyn has crafted a story that's both entertaining and heartwarming, earning a solid 4.6 stars from me. If you're looking for a fun, engaging, and funny read, this one should definitely be on your list!

Age gap romance, fun murder mystery, dating coach, and crazy exes: this book had it all! This book is the first book in a stand-alone series. I started with the fourth but really enjoyed going back and getting Emily and Reed’s story.

I loved the murder mystery plot and especially enjoyed seeing how Reed and Emily worked together to try and prove her innocence. Sometimes the whole interfering-with-a-police-investigation trope with amateur detectives doesn’t work for me, but this book had a fresh and still believable take where Emily was naturally assisting in the investigation without it being a huge deal. Yes!!!! Something different in my fav genre!

Emily herself is a relatable and lovable character with hilarious inner dialogue. I loved her determination and grit in the face of difficult circumstances. Her roommates, especially Lucy, were super fun too! Reed was the perfect grumpy-but-secretly-soft MMC with limited social skills. The dating coach beginning between the two of them was super funny and a good start to the tension between them.

The mystery kept me guessing until the end, without overpowering the romcom plot. Definitely recommend!

This book is a slow burn mystery romance that will keep you on the edge of your seat. From the very first page and I was drawn into the story so much.

The mystery element of the novel is well-crafted and kept me guessing until the very end. Every time I thought I had it all figured out, another twist was thrown my way. And the slow burn romance between Emily and Reed only added to the suspense and kept me turning the pages.

The dialogue is sharp, the humor is on point, and the banter between the characters is highly entertaining. I found myself laughing out loud and shedding a few tears as I followed Emily and Reed's journey.

This is a must-read for readers of mystery and romance. Heather Miekstyn has crafted a beautiful story with well-rounded characters and an intriguing plot. I can't recommend this book enough.

Along for the Ride is a dual point of view rom/com mystery. It’s an interesting combination of genres and Heather Miekstyn pulled it off with excellence.

Emily, a waitress/ fitness and martial arts instructor, is sunshine in spite of everything in her life going wrong and ends up crossing paths with grumpy Reed, a police detective who takes everything seriously.

When Emily’s coworker is found dead the mystery ensues. Meanwhile Emily and Reed’s unlikely friendship grows. The witty banter keeps the book from getting too heavy with all the talk of the dead waitress, and it also makes the developing relationship between Emily and Reed shine.

If you are looking for a sweet romantic read with kisses only, this is it! The language is clean, but there are a few cr*p’s and scr*w*d’s.

Heather wraps the mystery and romance up perfectly. This is a fun book that won’t disappoint!

Is it because it's my first mystery novel? Nah, I don't think so cause I've watched plenty even more thriller crimes and mysteries and yot I absolutely loved this book.

Reed- he is sweet and caring and hot and cute and my new crush

And Emily- oh I think I just fell in love with alongside Reed because she is adorable and definitely not a damsel in distress one would think a munder mystery with a hot cop usually has.

I don't wanna spoil the story so I'll just say that it will get you hooked.

Oh and again no spoilers(okay maybe a small one which doesn't even matter) even if you hate stories where it's two brothers pining for one girl like I do, give it a try cause the other brother is trash

The only thing I didn't like though is that the book has no spice, but it's still so good!!!!

It was a romcom-ystery for sure! Plenty of humor, wit, and funny quips. I loved the internal dialogue of the two. I always enjoy the dual pov. Our H was a little nervous and awkward which was endearing. I felt the story flowed really nice and I was at the end before I knew it. If you like the TV show Pysch you'll enjoy this book. Not a spin off but has that style of dynamics and humor and strong friendships that are great from Pysch. This was a new author to me and I'm happy to have discovered her and will continue this series. Strafford is hilarious! The mystery wasn't overly complicated or on the nose. I think it was a nice mix of romcom and sort of cozy murder mystery. (Pysch, Murder She wrote?)

Cute but... algo me faltó.

Me dejo debiendo muchas cosas.

Pero sí, es una novela que se lee rápido, que mezcla bien el romance y el misterio, y una historia caótica llena de clichés de los buenos en ambos géneros.

How does Heather do it!? Ugh, I kicked my feet. I giggled. I might’ve even teared up just a tiny bit with happiness.

The banter, the snark, the chemistry. All top notch. And it’s not just between reed and Emily! Lucy, or should I say “Red,” was instantly a favorite side character due to her sass.

The mystery element pulled me in, and I had my guesses as to the perpetrator, as well as the other mystery! I’m pleased to say that I was correct on both hunches.

This definitely one of those books that you need to carve out a chunk of time and just sit down and read. Because once you pick it up, you won’t want to put it down!

The story is hilarious, crazy and cozy all rolled together.
I loved the main characters, Emily and Reed. Each one is endearing in their own way and just perfect in every way. Supporting characters were great….I can’t wait to get to know each one more.
If you are in the mood for a quirky, funny and quaint book to read, this is the book you need to pick up.

4.5 ⭐️ - this was so good!!

I think this is the first rom-com mystery I've read, and I devoured it. Emily helping Reed come out of his shell throughout the book was adorable, and I really enjoyed both characters. Even Emily's friends and the other detectives were top tier. I kind of suspected everyone here and there but was still so surprised by how it unfolded.

Can't wait to keep reading the series!

Absolutely hilarious and fantastic romantic comedy mystery! I could hardly put it down.

The mystery kept me on the edge of my seat and the romance was *chef’s kiss* perfection.

I loved the romantic tension that developed almost immediately between the MCs and how protective our MMC was from early on in the story.

I highly, highly recommend this book if you’re looking for a funny cozy mystery. It’s also clean and closed door and packed with swoony romance.
