First off what a phenomenal story. Book two when?

I saw this book from a review a mutual of mine posted and immediately knew I HAD to read this story. I added it to my future reads list and then saw arcs were open and I didn't have to wait until next year to dive in and I was so beyond excited. This book EXCEEDED my expectations for anything I could have possibly hoped for from something compared with Fallout.

tw: violence, grief, mentions of cannibalism, substance abuse, murder, death, PTSD, panic attacks, religious-like cults, torture, off-page SA/human trafficking/attempted suicide

"Be weeks before we kill either of you. Meat lasts a lot longer when you’re alive."
The way I backed into my chair when we ran into these guys. I was terrified for Georgie.

This is a dual POV story. One of the views we read is from Georgie's perspective. She's kind of like a medic in training. She knows her stuff, but has things to learn and really lacks the confidence in herself. We learn right off the bat that her mom was murdered and i left her with some pretty bad PTSD and the goal to finish the vaccine her mother started. Our other point of view is Adam. He is one of my favorites. He is a really good sharpshooter, but he has a deeply disturbing past and struggles with substance abuse. We learn he has been working with his partner Oliver to try and lower his dosage to potentially one day be clean, but he also struggles with this voice in his head that really hinders his healing.

There are quite a few different bad guy challenges our characters face and it gets progressively harder for our main characters as the story goes on. Just when you think it could get as bad as it possibly can the challenges get even worse. I will say that I totally guessed who the main bad person was as soon as we were introduced to them. My many years of side quests in video games had prepared me for that moment. It felt genuinely good nailing that guess, but also not good because of what our poor characters have to face.

and now a message from Adam to Georgie:
“Look around. There are more important things to worry about. The world’s a fucking mess.” “It’s always been a mess,” he said. “It’s just more noticeable now. But if things like love and beautiful boys don’t matter, then what does?”

A few years ago, I wrote the types of dystopian novels I would want to read. With morally grey characters, an anxiety-riddled FMC, and a terrible world in which everything you know is questioned, and your morals are either thrown out or tested immensely. Fast forward, and I find out about Bioluminescence and I’m sold. **I received an ARC of this book, but all the thoughts are my own**

Toni has written everything poetically in such a ruinous setting. She took the things I love in a story and put them all together. As I said, a few years ago I wrote the type of book I would want to read, and now I get to actually experience the joy on my own because someone else has written that perfect post-apocalyptic/dystopian gem. That was a beautiful holiday gift for myself, indeed!

I recommend this book for anyone that loves dark twisty themes in a dystopia/post apocalyptic setting. You will NOT be disappointed.

i enjoyed this book for the most part but some things just had me so frustrated...

LET ME FIRST MENTION that this is the authors debut and for that it was incredible, the writing is great, the world building was easy to follow and interesting, and the over arching story line kept me interested for the most part. i'll definitely be on the lookout for future books!! but there's just some things in this one that just made my annoyance flare up, but that is 100% just personal preference in how i like my stories

first the relationships seemed way too underdeveloped, you were just supposed to trust they were close/meant a lot to each other because you were told, even though you don't actually get to see it that much. take adam and oliver for example, you're told adam would do anything to keep oliver safe, yet they have like 2 conversations throughout the book, whenever they're forced to be apart for a while and reunited it never seemed like they actually cared that they were back together.

second, my god was georgie, the fmc, insufferable. classic case of a character that makes the dumbest decisions to be "strong" when they're clearly not strong but stupid with a capital S. like i'm sorry but i kept getting so annoyed at her choices and how tough she acted, at some points it also seemed incredibly out of character, like damn where'd that come from??? her whole thing with jax was like mentioned above too underdeveloped for some scenes to really invoke any feelings in me so i just read with a blank face.

third, damn was there a lot repetition in this book. i guess this is a mild spoiler but someone kept getting taken, and the others got them back, someone got taken, they got them back, someone got taken, they got them back, over and over and over again. like you can't even enjoy the characters being back together again because guess what! someone is gone again!

this especially frustrated me with adam and oliver because i was super interested in their story and their dynamic and just seeing more of them but again someone was always gone and when they were together they exchanged one word with each other and then did their own stuff like...? and i'm supposed to believe they care for each other?

the beginning of the book was incredibly slow, i almost didn't keep reading and the ending was filled with so much i couldn't keep up. so i guess pacing issues were at hand here.

do i recommend this book? yes, i'd definitely give it a chance if you like post apocalyptic books

now i'll have to decide if i'll continue with the second book or not..

I received this as an ARC and it was hands down 5 stars.

It’s starts in a world post-pandemic where a fungi killed off most of the population. There are government formed Haven’s for people of importance (Vitals) who occupy the city with the Locals.

Georgie is an anxiety ridden med student who is determined to do something valuable and wants to finish her mom’s work and find a vaccine. Her best friend Jax, is a soldier who protects her as she tags along with him and 3 other soldiers to find her dad their missing teams. They come across a cult and things go south very quickly!

Adam is a great sniper and an addict who lives outside the Haven with another group and is protective of his boyfriend Oliver (who escaped the cult). Adam’s story is done well and your heart breaks for him as he battles his responsibilities, addiction and hopes.

The characters are well developed and the plot is fast-paced and never stagnant right up to the end. I was dreading the 97% on my kindle as I knew I wanted more! Easily a favorite of 2023 for me.

Definitely pick this one up when it comes out!

Bioluminescence is a beautifully written book set in a post-apocalyptic world. Certain elements of the book gave me The Last of Us vibes (like the spores) but without the clickers (zombies). I really liked that the author took a different direction and made their own spin on what those spores do. And this book really goes to show that maybe zombies isn’t the most scary thing that could await you in a post apocalyptic world.

I love that it was a dual point of view and that those points of view were from two completely different people (Georgie and Adam). There were a lot of twists and turns I didn’t see coming and I was kept at the edge of my seat for most of it! When I say that I read this book in one sitting I mean it. I cannot wait for the next book to see where these characters go from here!

Hope was even more dangerous than people. You could survive a lifetime of horrible people. Adam had. But the higher hope builds you up, the more painful the impact when you inevitably fall.

content warnings: addiction, death, drug use/abuse, gun violence, panic attacks/disorders, torture, kidnapping, murder, mention of past sexual assault

The characters felt real. The conflicts felt scarily real.
The main characters are flawed. Like majorly flawed. That makes me like them even more. The representation of mental illness & addiction was done wonderfully.
A great blend of The Last of Us & Fallout.

It’s been a while or maybe the first time I’ve read a dystopian book. I loved it.

tropes-ish?
-friends to lovers?
-LGBTIQ rep
-political conflicts

The last show/movie I watched was The Last of Us.And so, it was easier for me to visualize the scenery and the setting. Obviously minus the zombies.

This is beautifully written. Like any fantasy/sci-fi books, the world building is important for me. In this case, it was easy to understand even though I wished there were to it.
The story has very strong turbulent politics, hazardous f-up cult-like organization/cult, and leadership war. Not gonna lie, at the end, around 60% of the story, I got nervous.

When it comes to the characters, we have LGBT representation, from one main character. And the other has friends and lovers; in progress.

This is a Duo pov from both Georgia and Adam.
The story is post-pandemic, where a fungus is killing humans within. G is a medic in training aka probably one of the only one her 'village' are depending on.
While she is knowledgeable, she seems to be having a hard time with her confidence. She has been through a lot: her mother's death and her daddy issues are really affecting her. Her sole purpose atm is to finish and find her mother's cure for the fungus. Alongside her best friend Jax, they go on a journey to find it.

One the other hand, Adam is younger then Georgia (have to mention it because they both do not have romance between them at all; more of a trusted friend). He is a shooter and is extremely good with weapons and knows how to navigate certain areas without getting caught. His sole purpose in life is food and Oliver. Adam is also traumatized by his past and has strong ptsd; voices in his head that are very negative. He doesn't treat it; mostly balms it with his addiction.

Together and on their own, both Georgia and Adam has to come together in order to stop this person
I was not expecting the ending!!! I need the second book!

1.5 stars rounded up for the few good moments. The 2 main characters (especially Georgie) are insufferable, and the plot is repetitive as hell. There were a few action scenes where I was actually invested, but those scenes get wrapped up so fast and the plot just keeps on going in its confusing spiral of repetitions. By the end of the book, there has been so much murder and torture that it all just feels meaningless. Needless to say I will not be reading the sequel.

✨ARC Review✨

This was an amazing read!

Set in a post-apocalyptic world, with a spooky spores that actually sound terrifying.
I love the way this book was written from two points of view from two characters. And the twists and turns it took had me shocked.
And that ending?! There better be a book two 😭

Such a good book! 🖤

4.5 rounded up! This was really entertaining and I'm excited for the next book! Out of the two POV characters, Adam was my favourite. His history and struggle is really compelling. The way his story is set up to continue is also incredibly intriguing, I'm most looking forward to see where he'll go from here. I have a feeling it's going to hurt, I just want him to be happy :') I like Georgie but she makes a lot of rash decisions that tend to flip flop a lot between being selfish and being self sacrificing. I do have high hopes for her character development in the next installments however. Adam and Georgie's friendship was really sweet as well.

Spoilers:

Overall this was really good and I need more post-apocalyptic stories like this! Can't wait to see where it goes.

I absolutely LOVE apocalyptic stories, especially ones that focus on character dynamics (as opposed to being just about ~killing zombies~ and all that ~action stuff~), so it’s no surprise that I enjoyed this book.

Bioluminescence takes place a couple of years after a pandemic wiped out most of humanity. We follow 2 perspectives: Georgie, who lives in a government-led community (the Haven), with all the food, supplies and protection needed for survival; and Adam, who lives outside (in the “regular” world) with other survivors, fighting and struggling to stay alive.

Both POVs were really enjoyable! I liked seeing the difference between the lifestyles in the highly protected Haven VS the outside world, where everyone was struggling to even find food or medicine.

I really liked their individual stories! Georgie, was already struggling before the start of the book because 1) she lost her mum a year prior, and 2) because her mum was close to finding a vaccine for the disease that wiped out most of humanity, so Georgie feels obligated to continue her research and save everyone. Then her father goes missing, so Georgie secretly leaves the Haven to go find him. In the process, she learns that there are survivors outside of the Haven, and that the Haven council has been lying about it.

The other MC, Adam, managed to survive outside the Haven, but barely: he didn’t always have food, he ended up becoming addicted to pills, and he has a really hard time trusting people. Adam and Georgie’s paths cross when Georgie is looking for her father, and they end up going through a lot together, dealing with the several groups of survivors + all the politics related to them.

I thought the story was really interesting, especially towards the end! Kind of wild! I’m excited to read the next book! 👀

Sadly, I didn’t care about the characters’ relationships as much as I wished. All of them, *on paper*, were really good! Adam and Oliver finding each other in the middle of an apocalypse, falling in love, and becoming each other’s everything, to the point where they’d put themselves in danger to protect the other? 10/10!!! And Georgie and Jax becoming best friends and then falling in love, but not letting their relationship become romantic because they don’t want to ruin their friendship, even though they’d literally die for each other too? Amazing!!!!

Unfortunately, though, I never fully connect with these relationships, and I think it’s because they were already pre-established. When the book began, both of these couples were already at the point where they really loved each other, which can definitely work! But, for me, personally, it didn’t. I think it’s easier for me to care about a romantic pairing if I can actually see their relationship develop and their love blossom. Since we didn’t see that in this book, I didn’t care that much about their romance. But that’s just a personal thing.

Even though I didn’t ~fall in love~ with the romantic relationships, I actually liked the LIs, for the most part. Jax was definitely my favourite! He was so sweet and understanding, and I want someone like him to love me (please. I’m begging). I liked how much Jax and Georgie cared about each other, after losing so much. Oliver, on the other hand, was really… struggling. He had gone through a lot, and had a lot of self-doubt. Both him and Adam believed the other was too good for them, and that they didn’t deserve love. They were constantly putting themselves in danger if it meant they could protect their loved one (which, in Oliver’s case, meant he betrayed a lot of people for the sake of protecting Adam and hopefully giving him a better life, away from Oliver, because he thought Adam deserved better). This made their relationship very intriguing, and their actions, while being clearly bad at some points, made a lot of sense, which I enjoyed. So, overall, even though I never fully connected with these couples, I still really enjoyed their dynamics!

Regarding Georgie and Adam’s friendship… I’m gonna be honest – I also didn’t really care about it. I genuinely couldn’t understand why they cared so much about each other despite being complete strangers. I wish the author had developed their friendship a bit more, because their bond didn’t make sense to me. And, sure, the characters constantly said stuff like “Idk why I care about that person, but I do”, which like………. okay. I’m glad it’s being addressed! But… that doesn't stop it from making little sense… 😅 But okay.

So, overall, I really liked this book! I enjoyed the world, the pacing and the story. The characters were interesting, even though I didn’t care much about the relationships. I’m excited about the sequel!

Also, I just wanna say: the cover is GORGEOUS! And I also LOVE that the chapter headers evolve as the book advances!

Happy release day!!
I absolutely loved this book. I came across one of Toni’s tiktoks that said this book was like The Last of Us and I knew I had to read it!
It’s a dual pov story told by Georgie and Adam. They both have very different experiences, because Georgie lived in a military safe haven and Adam had to survive out in the city. The characters in this book deal with things like grief, ptsd, anxiety, addiction and torture. They both work together to defeat the bad guys of the story, the biggest a cult. The last ± 20% had so many plot twists, some I did and some I didn’t see coming. I can’t wait to read the second book!!

I recommend this book if you like post apocalyptic and dystopian books, The Last of Us and/or The Walking Dead

I loved this book so much!

This was my first ever apocalyptic novel, I've seen shows and movies, just have never read this type of book. It was amazing! This book was so beautifully written with emotional intensity and lots of suspense!

This had political unrest, dangerous cults, very high stakes, I was tense and excited for most of the book. It had lgbt representation, friends-to-lovers small romance (Two relationships you care deeply about). But most importantly this book was packed with emotion, I was so worried all of the time. I don't normally tear up while reading, but I got choked up five times while reading this!

This book had all of The Last of Us vibes!

As much as I was hoping I would love this book because im the biggest the last of us and the walking dead fan, it actually made me angry because of how insufferable Georgie, on of the main characters, was. Why do you keep getting angry at the people that tells you to stop making dumb decisions that almost get everybody killed at least like four times, and then insist that you can take care of yourself when you have been kidnapped and almost killed like another five times. Also, why does she insist tha she has to find a vaccine and save the world when she was just a bad premed student. Also the decisions of other characters were also pretty dumb so yeah theres that.

📚[RESEÑA]📚 "𝗕𝗶𝗼𝗹𝘂𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲" de Toni Duarte.

[CALIFICACIÓN] ⭐⭐⭐⭐

𝗡𝗢𝗧𝗔𝗦:

My review may be a little biased being married to the author and all....but all reviews are biased, they are our literal opinions. Anyway.

Bioluminescence is the first book a trilogy that tells the story of Georgie and Adam.

Two survivors of the apocalypse brought about by a cordyceps breakout that infected the world. Think The Last of Us, minus the zombie danger. Plus the survival feels of Fallout and a cult like Far Cry 5.

Instead, it is a long drawn out process where a person is painfully paralyzed and lives final time in incredible pain with no way to stop it besides...other means of faster death. Like the quick release a bullet brings.

Georgie holds herself to the high standard set forth by her parents. She feels responsible for helping everyone because of her lineage and opportunity to survive. But as an anxiety-ridden, accident-prone person. Even on her best days, she doesn't feel like she's good enough.

Adam suffering started long before the world ended. Not that the end brought him any solace. His hardships made him seek out escapes from his reality. Like boys, drugs, and alcohol. Causing him extra hardships in survival. Oh, and he's an incredible sniper. Like 360, no scope skill. He delivers silent deaths when the situation calls for it, or when it doesn't, depending on how bored Adam is.

The story is fast paced in the right places, and delivers great character development with things changing unexpectedly.

If you're a fan of post-apocalyptic fiction, people trying their best to survive and falling hard. This book is a great choice!

And it's the first one in a trilogy...so you know, more to come!

I was an ARC reader for this book, but all the opinions are my own.
A definitely interesting take on the post-apocalypse. With the book split between two POV characters, I want to take a moment with each. Adam is a survivor of life-long abuse and mistreatment, a drug addict, and a killer. He is by far the more interesting and sympathetic of the two, and you want him to overcome his self-doubt and history to be happy. Additionally, the other characters' actions towards him, both kind and not, feel natural and real. Overall, I looked forward to his chapters. Georgie, the other POV, isn't bad but isn't as strong. Her flaw is that she is overly determined and selfish but has almost no self reflection about it. That could work perfectly well except for one thing. Despite getting several people killed with her actions, never contradicting the accusations that she is a nepo-baby, and violating people's bodily autonomy, everyone still seems to like Georgie. If the world had a more negative reaction to her, I think she would work better, but she isn't a bad character.
The matter of fact writing works well for the bleak setting, though the quick action can get confusing at times, resulting in the need to reread several parts. Each of the POVs feel unique with focus shifting based on the character.
It gets my recommendation for anyone looking to experience a broken-down world.

Ho. Ly. Shit.
Okay, listen. This may just be my favorite thing I've read in... a while. Definitely my favorite dystopian in years. With all the beautiful character development and arcs I'm used to finding only in the likes of Marie Lu, along with a deadly world I haven't been as enraptured in since I read Stung by Bethany Wiggins a decade ago, this is THE apocalypse novel to beat.
I fell in love with Georgie almost off the bat. Anxiety, panic attacks, and loves her friend? I'm sold.
Then you give me a sweet boy who just wants to protect his even sweeter boy despite every new shitty thing in his life? Ms. Duarte, it's almost rude I didn't have this book in my life before.
But I have it now and I will most definitely be holding it so very close to my heart. Along with buying a physical copy so I actually can. ♥️
Edit: Wait! I forgot to add my favorite line.*
*Spoilers only because I think it should be read in context always, but:

It’s been a good while since I’ve read such a good Dystopian/post-apocalyptic book! It was go go go dang near from start to finish! The story was gripping, and it was so hard to put it down and not binge it in one sitting!

This is Dual POV following Adam and Georgie.

Both Characters were amazing, and had great depth and relatability. I found myself connecting to different pieces of each of them helping to add that extra layer of connection and getting immersed into the story.

Also love that this is different by the fact that while we have a killer disease, it doesn’t have zombies, it’s just focuses on how crappy people are when society isn’t there to keep us in check and how we are the monsters, so we don’t really need the addition of made up ones to make the story compelling.

4/5 ⭐️
I don’t read too many post apocalyptic stories, but my god this was entertaining. I read this in two days. I was practically inhaling it. And I liked that the thing that brought the world down was a pandemic disease and how even with their society scraping by, the disease still threatens.
My only complaint was with Georgie. I can’t exactly explain why cause on paper she met all the requirements a main character needs, but she sort of fell flat for me. Like I just couldn’t understand why everyone liked her. Adam yes, even though he’s sooooo morally gray. But thankfully Adam is the other narrator and I loved all the other characters.
That last 25% was absolutely insane. It was like bomb after bomb going off.
I really enjoyed this story and would definitely recommend it to others.

This had so many things that I look for in a book - a queer cast, tense moments, some gorgeous description and complex characters. I found myself frustrated with the characters at times, particularly Georgie, but in a very real way - none of the characters were perfect and it made them feel 3D. They weren’t always likable which is perfect when you’re reading about a post apocalyptic world where the characters have to toughen up. The politics was interesting and I loved the way societal pockets had taken dark turns towards cultish ideology and dictatorships. I’m looking forward to reading more of this series!

Sometimes I can form coherent thoughts about books and other times I am just [insert long keyboard smash] agghhh I loved this book so so much. And this was one of those times.

It’s been a while since I felt this attached to a group of characters but Adam, Georgie and Oliver have captured my heart. With a dual POV narrative and plenty of twists, Bioluminescence is one hell of a page-turner; the stakes are high, the tension won’t stop rising and all I need to know is WHAT happens next? Toni Duarte, you have me hooked.

I absolutely LOVE LOVE LOVED this book. What a fun, captivating read. I'll be honest, when I first heard the description of the book, my knee-jerk reaction was, "Oh this is going to be another story a la The Walking Dead or The Last of Us" (which admittedly, made me kind of nervous). But boy was I WRONG and VERY HAPPY to be so. This story was NOTHING like that. This is a very unique perspective on a post-apocalyptic world. It was original, and very refreshing. The author does such a good job with character development and the storyline in general. Her writing style is WONDERFUL. It's clear and concise, and her ability to describe situations and places just draw you into Georgie and Adam's worlds. She also makes you fall in love with the main characters, which not all authors are able to make happen sometimes. I am OBSESSED with Adam. What a tortured little soul he is. His journey honestly broke my heart and sometimes I found myself a little teary-eyed as I read more and more about what makes Adam, Adam, and what he has gone through, and the demons that continue to haunt him. I think many people will find him pretty relatable on one level or another. I hope he finds peace and happiness at some point.

Oh, and HOLY PLOT TWIST at the end. I had tiny suspicions, but I didn't REALLY see it coming. I love a book that does that successfully.

All that to say, I NEED MORE. I cannot wait for the second book to come out. And I hope we won't be waiting too long. I need to know what happens next for Georgie and Adam and all the other characters we were introduced to.

Definitely pick this one up. You will be glad you did!!!

Felt like all the character stuff I enjoyed with Hunger Games and the Walking Dead wrapped up in a more palatable Cormac McCarthy’s the Road.
There feels like too much is going on at times and a lot to keep track of but when it all comes together in that finale it’s worth it.

I was lucky enough to read an ARC of Bioluminescence, and I will definitely be picking up a physical copy when this releases. This one is going on my re-read TBR, and I’m excited to read the next book in the series as well. I would love a prequel that got more into the events leading up to the post-apocalyptic setting.

I love a good post apocalypse novel, and this had solid “The Last of Us” vibes. If you like “Station Eleven” or “All That’s Left In The World” you might want to add this one to your reading list.

Told from dual perspectives, Georgie and Adam cross paths while they fight to save the people they love from dangers that aren’t always obvious. Adam is grappling with addiction and driven only to save the boy he loves, Oliver. Georgie is searching not only for her father, who has mysteriously disappeared, but also the vaccine that is key to humanities survival.

The two main characters, Georgie and Adam, were lovable but had believable backstory and flaws.  I enjoyed the found family feel the relationships had and the dynamics between characters. I also liked that while both Georgie and Adam had love interests and relationship struggles, those storylines were with other characters rather than each other. A solid male-female friendship like this is something I wish I saw more of in books.

The large cast of characters was a little confusing for me to keep track of at first, but other than that, I was hooked and sped through this book.

As others have said, its totally the last of us vibes (but definitely not a ripoff whatsoever). I really liked the fast pacing & duel pov. The artwork on the cover and inside the book are beautiful. I will definitely be keeping an eye out for future books in the series.

I knew I was in trouble as soon as I started this. I haven’t read a book in one sitting since Harry Potter and to say I devoured Bioluminescence is an understatement.

The way Toni set the scene and described the characters was breathtaking. Not since Stephen King have I felt so immersed in a story.

I wanted to traverse the world outside the Campus with Georgie and friends trying to save the day while avoiding infection. Oliver and Adam are fiercely adorable and brave-making me wish they were real. The excitement is pretty much non-stop. Just read it, you’ll be glad you did.

Ps
The chapter art grows as the story progresses and its beautiful!
